These Foolish Things (Remind Me Of You): Piano Arrangement
I always fancied doing an old style version of this famous song by Londoners Jack Strachey and Eric Maschwitz. You know the kind of thing you hear in old films of the period when there's a piano in the background. #pianosolo #1930smusic
The song was first made popular by Hutch in 1936. Turner Layton also recorded it with Carroll Gibbons. Both versions were accompanied by a solo pianist, Hutch himself of course and Gibbons with Layton, which is why I think the song is associated with piano. Both Hutch and Layton performed the original 4 bar B section of the song. Shortly after it went to the U.S. Benny Goodman's band were performing it with a different 8 bar B section. I've gone for the or...

Piano Composition: "A Summer's Night"
Просмотров 21521 день назад
The third piece in my four seasons suite of short pieces. This one has a Latin rhythm. The four bar riff at the beginning and end came out of my head (no doubt heard something much like it somewhere). When I tried to match it with notation of the various rhythms it seems to line up pretty well with Cuban Son . Quite difficult to get right at a quick tempo with only the initial two notes and las...

The Diminished Scale fingerings.
Просмотров 1302 месяца назад
As the diminished scales (half tone whole tone) are symmetrical the fingerings can be learned like this. Note both the thumbs play on D and each hand will be playing a different scale not always starting with a half tone. This method I found helps you to recognize the 3 patterns effectively and is the quickest way to master the fingerings. Slowing down the video with settings will help see them...

The second piece in the 4 seasons suite. Its a Rondo in which a musical idea (A) is repeated and in between there are different episodes B and C, so in this case only two episodes (ABACA form). I came up with the idea for the A section first and the others sections quite quickly. Fitting it all together was the harder bit. B is in the home key of D major while C is in the relative minor and eac...

This is the first of four new pieces for 2024 one for each of the 4 seasons. This song by Rodgers and Hart is often played and sung in 4/4 time and without the verse but it was actually written as a waltz as one of the songs in the musical "The Boys From Syracuse" and for this version I've included the verse. The words of the song makes more sense with the verse but it is rarely fully performed outside of the context of the musical show. Also as hardly anyone knows the ...

    Wow Steve - one of my favourite standards. So pleased you did the verse as it’s really a very good one (as we know they are variable!) this is such a great, clean arrangement and I love the variety you have from the dropped 10th LH to the Walleresque treatment following the middle 8….and your block chording in the middle 8 is just 👌🏻 really enjoyed it and of course it can only be in Eb 😀 great stuff Steve. All the best - G

      Thanks Gareth! It's a bit of an indulgence on my part making it a little more jazzy than I initially intended so something of a mixture of New York and London I suppose! I watched your version after I'd put the notes down so not to influence me.. wow you really give it the R.R. treatment! Incidentally I think you probably know Strachey also wrote "In Party Mood". I'd love to hear you play that one.

    Wonderful Steve 👌🏻 you know I have a penchant for Latin rhythms and you have captured a Summer evening so rhythmically and poetically in the latest piece in your seasons series. Just right for these balmy evenings of the past week - I loved the middle section as well - very much after Tom Jobim but love the modulation back via that ‘honk’ chord. Such an attractive composition - I love it and the way you bookend it with the rhythmic riff. I’m on my 4th listen and would love to learn it - great, great stuff Mr L 🤩 👏🏻

    • @p1anosteve
      @p1anosteve 26 дней назад

      Thanks Gareth. I first wrote it some years ago and reconstructed it without any specific rhythm in mind as I'm no Latin expert. I was though back then into the authentic Cuban music ( and still am) after watching the stunning and heart warming Ry Cooder documentary on Ruben Gonzalez and the other famous musicians. The whole piece could be given a bossa nova treatment though and I've actually altered that middle section repeat to reflect that (with a nod to your big left hand style ha.ha..). I'd love to hear you improvise on it so here is a link to the score www.mediafire.com/file/eumfgnt59ydvrow/A_Summer%2527s_Night.pdf/file

    I love this theme Steve 👌🏻 I think it’s such a clever, atmospheric piece of music that seemed to sum up the whole character of its protagonist. I remember being as surprised when reading the volume of the output of the composer. You say your arrangement is simplified but its beauty is that you have cleverly maintained the main structural elements and it has not lost anything. A very civilised way to start the evening. Great stuff - best - Gareth 👏🏻

    • @p1anosteve
      @p1anosteve 3 месяца назад

      Even more amazing Gareth when you take into account I had no idea that he had a band until well after his death in 1979. You see I was born in 1951 when he was 70 years old and saw very little of him in his later years. My father had told me he played piano and insisted my dad have lessons, which he was grateful for, as dad played a bit on and off for the rest of his life. Both my parents would have been about 6 years old in 1920 and dad was often cared for by his grandmother due to his mothers failing health. So my father may never have ever known about the band! I did once play something for my grandfather when he was in his mid 90s and he recalled to me his early experiences learning the piano but he never ever mentioned the band. It was only in the mid 1980s when my cousin sent a copy of the tape to my mother, that she remembered her much older sister in law (the girl standing next to grandfather in the photo) once told her that she had played the violin in her father's band for tea dances. The photograph was an even more recent discovery 15 years ago on a visit to my cousin, (who has a musical family) had it hanging on the wall in his hallway! Thank goodness he made a copy of that tape . 🙂🙂

    Hi Steve this is beautiful ☺️ you have so perfectly encapsulated the mood, feel, colour, timbres and shapes of Spring and the delightfully formed episodes capture the season so well. There is a very ‘English’ sound to it, which is a very clever trick to pull off - with the A sections particularly so, almost Vaughan Williams…esque Love the piece and its neat and natural structure Hope it gets even more views All the best - Gareth 🎹
