day in a life of a translation studies student

Hi there! It’s just a random amateur project of mine. This video was recorded on February, 27. Due to the circumstances in the world there may be some difficulties (for me) with practicing foreign languages with people from other countries, so I’ve decided to finally record my first ever video. I know it’s not so good - I look so tired here and make mistakes, but I’m glad that I finally did it....

    I'm a translator since I was 19 years old (2013). I'm completing my degree in Translation next year. When I started I kept it a secret from everyone including parents. People are very jelous and they think you can only be a professional translator if you are old, etc. Specially for a young woman too! I don't see much difference with my degree, I see what I already learned by myself. But I was very slow with other languages, only now I'm starting to learn romance languages. My pairs are English-Brazilian Portuguese. If you feel to talk with me for anything or just talk about the job, you can contact me! Thanks

    When I finished school I had no idea of what to study, I tried biology but I found out that natural sciences wasn't for me, after that I've been lost for a whole year trying to deal with emotional problems while my school friends kept going on with their university studies, that made me feel that I was far behind them. I recently got accepted in a university to study translation and interpretation, I love forgein languages, specially English and Japanese, I'm going to study Chinese at university btw. And after watching this video I felt insecure about if I made the correct choice... I truly appreciate your video! But I'm a bit disencouraged, I'm mostly into forgein languages, that's why I choose to study that. I guess I should've made more research... I'm just afraid to abandon something again as I did with biology. Moreover, some relatives and friends told me that translators will someday be replaced by artificial intelligence, which disencouraged me even more. I beg your apologies if my comment was negative or not pretty, but I wanted to express my feelings about it. Again, thank you so much for this video, it made me know a bit more about this field!

      Hey @kladd00, I'm not her but I have a few things to say. It can confort you. I am a translator, and I went to college for translation. I just love what I do, and I did not know anything when I first started studying. The most important thing is that AI won't replace translators any time soon. AI cannot capture ironies, accents, culture, and people. AI cannot be really creative. ChatGPT basically copies and pastes informations to "create" essays or anything you ask. And don't even get me started on the billions of dollars that would be lost with AI mistakes. Only the bottom feeders are using AI, but there is plenty of work for real translators, those who study languages, those who study culture, those who know their native languages well.

    I am more worried that I make mistakes when writing the translation. Not in the sense of conveying what is being said, but in the sense where I place a coma or a dash at the wrong spot or at all. I do not have complete masterty of the language. Neither my native, nor English.

      Hi! I think that sometimes studying languages at Uni may be overestimated. It really depends on what your perspectives and goals are. If you are doing it just for fun and new experience, I think I would recommend keeping going with Spanish on your own (unless you pursue an academic aim in this field).

    Hi, Magda! Hope you doing well. I'm a Modern Languages major at the moment (5/10 semesters completed), and I've always been thinking about studying translation. There are no translation majors where I live, that's why I'm majoring in other stuff, and I plan to study a master of translation in the future. I've no translation experience, so I've been taking some online courses on translation to see what it looks like and master the basics before going for a master's degree. I dream of translating webcomics and manga one day 😁, that's why I'm on this. I expect not having that hard of a time with Japanese. 😆 Your videos are really cool and help to know more about this field, what is no easy task as human translation is not a very popular profession within society, so sometimes is tricky to find as much information as you'd like. This is even more noticeable on RUclips, that's what makes me appreciate your content even more 👌. Greetings from Colombia. ✌

    • @booktrition
      @booktrition 11 месяцев назад

      Hello, Thank you for the feedback! Yes, it feels like this profession is getting less and less popular nowadays (which is not 100 percent true, I guess). But I think it would be great if we had a community of co-thinkers here, on RUclips. Pretty often people from this field can share useful (and sometimes unexpected) tips on how to translate/ learn languages. P.S. wish you good luck with manga and comics translation:)

    Hey Magda! I took a gap year Not even one but three ! And I wouldn’t trade it for anything else Like you said there is no wrong or right way of doing things The only thing is that now I’m in Uni and all my other friends who I went to high school with have graduated! And I still haven’t so on some days I feel left out but at the same time they didn’t take gap years and so they’ve never experienced life without school ! Or like as an adult and not as a student which I’m grateful for because my gap year (years) taught me a lot! And also we are different I know i wouldn’t have appreciated the degree I’m doing now if I hadn’t taken a gap year! So it’s alwys 50/50 No right or wrong way! Just people trying their best to figure it all out! ❤ Best

    You are a lucky student indeed! I bet you there are no air raid sirens which interrupt your classes and make you feel neurotic because anytime a russian missile can hit your house. You can't experience those atrocities being committed by your fellow citizens (maybe, by your male relatives or friends who are in the russian army now). You can't sympathise with people who had lost everything because of russian insanity. I think your knowledge will be useless as russia is moving to isolation, and secludedness from the rest of the world step by step. Every day I wake up with a single thought: how better the world would be without russians. Russia is a terrorist and fascist state!
