Hi, Magda! Hope you doing well. I'm a Modern Languages major at the moment (5/10 semesters completed), and I've always been thinking about studying translation. There are no translation majors where I live, that's why I'm majoring in other stuff, and I plan to study a master of translation in the future. I've no translation experience, so I've been taking some online courses on translation to see what it looks like and master the basics before going for a master's degree. I dream of translating webcomics and manga one day 😁, that's why I'm on this. I expect not having that hard of a time with Japanese. 😆
Your videos are really cool and help to know more about this field, what is no easy task as human translation is not a very popular profession within society, so sometimes is tricky to find as much information as you'd like. This is even more noticeable on RUclips, that's what makes me appreciate your content even more 👌. Greetings from Colombia. ✌

      Hello,
      Thank you for the feedback!
Yes, it feels like this profession is getting less and less popular nowadays (which is not 100 percent true, I guess).
But I think it would be great if we had a community of co-thinkers here, on RUclips. Pretty often people from this field can share useful (and sometimes unexpected) tips on how to translate/ learn languages.
P.S. wish you good luck with manga and comics translation:)

11:53 I'm preparing for an entry exam of a master's degree in translation and this is exactly what I feel when I try to translate something--the fear of making a terrible translation. thank you for sharing your thoughts.

When I finished school I had no idea of what to study, I tried biology but I found out that natural sciences wasn't for me, after that I've been lost for a whole year trying to deal with emotional problems while my school friends kept going on with their university studies, that made me feel that I was far behind them. I recently got accepted in a university to study translation and interpretation, I love forgein languages, specially English and Japanese, I'm going to study Chinese at university btw. And after watching this video I felt insecure about if I made the correct choice... I truly appreciate your video! But I'm a bit disencouraged, I'm mostly into forgein languages, that's why I choose to study that. I guess I should've made more research... I'm just afraid to abandon something again as I did with biology. Moreover, some relatives and friends told me that translators will someday be replaced by artificial intelligence, which disencouraged me even more. I beg your apologies if my comment was negative or not pretty, but I wanted to express my feelings about it. Again, thank you so much for this video, it made me know a bit more about this field!

Hey @kladd00, I'm not her but I have a few things to say. It can confort you. I am a translator, and I went to college for translation. I just love what I do, and I did not know anything when I first started studying. The most important thing is that AI won't replace translators any time soon. AI cannot capture ironies, accents, culture, and people. AI cannot be really creative. ChatGPT basically copies and pastes informations to "create" essays or anything you ask. And don't even get me started on the billions of dollars that would be lost with AI mistakes. Only the bottom feeders are using AI, but there is plenty of work for real translators, those who study languages, those who study culture, those who know their native languages well.

It is worth the shot to try to go to college for translation. Don't give up before you try. You might love it. And if you don't, you can do anything you want with your language skills
