    - you only kiss people you know well, or friends of friend; you would never kiss for example your boss or a shop keeper - you only kiss once, on the right cheek; three kisses is for special occasions (congratulating someone with his birthday, for example) or when you haven't seen someone in a very long time - as someone else already said: we usually don't even kiss, but touch cheeks The elevator thing is weird. I've lived in Brussels for 20 years, and I never said hi to people I don't know. Ever. Nor in my 22 years outside of Brussels. If a stranger would talk to me in a small space, I would feel threatened and think he's a creep...

    • @JustBrusselsThings
      @JustBrusselsThings 3 дня назад

      @@fluffytom82 if you meet friends of friends, it’s normal in Brussels to greet with one kiss 😉 The elevator thing is quite common however, very surprised you haven’t met it. It’s not inviting to start a conversation, but it is to acknowledge that other people are there. I see in the comments that some people prefer to nodding. In my home country one would not do that at all.

    Really funny to see this as a Belgian 😂 the kisses are way more complicated though! We start on the right cheek, like people in Paris. (Left is for the other frenchies) And depending who you meet it is 1 or 3. Like my friends I would give a kiss with a hug. But my grandma gets 3. Some men also kiss other men. But most of them do handshakes. On birthdays we give 3. But the Pocahontas wave 👋🏼 got really popular during Covid, and it stayed. The elevator etiquette, French speaking will say bonjour. Flemish speaking will just nod. The beer thing is half true. It is more important to know how to serve a beer. If you don’t know, we are very happy to help and do it for you. Just don’t give us Heineken 😂 And don’t call them French fries! It’s just friet, frietjes or frites ❤ About the clothing, really depends your social circles and the event. But we do like the style, less is more.

    As a Belgian it is funny to hear this. You are not wrong. Do mind: we kiss on the RIGHT cheek, not the left one. If you aim for the left cheeck and the other person is going for the right you end up kissing each other on the mouth ;) In fact, we really don't kiss on the cheeck, our right cheeks touch each other but the kiss is 'in the air', not actually on the skin.

    As a Belgian from Flanders, I had no idea there was this elevator etiquette apart from acknowledging the other person but in my region, we would nog let the ladies go first or say goodbye or anything haha. That sounds very much like a french-speaking kind of thing to do, just like the kisses. I worked for a company with Walloon colleagues and every time they came over, they gave everyone three kisses and all the Flemish people were so weirded out by it every time haha. I also feel like the finding a solution for everything is a very Walloon thing too. In my experience Flanders (or at leat Antwerp) is much stricter, the rules are the rules and there is no bending the rules, which was as you say very common in my experience with Walloon colleagues at work. Loved your video! Very interesting to hear someone spell it all out haha : D

    Concerning the level of elegance in clothing and trying to look good in general in Brussels - my wife characterized the level of elegance of women in Brussels as "dry birch". Yes, the birch, the tree. There is literally nothing that could be found particularly interesting, witty of extremely beautiful in what they put on. As if they were trying to look rather invisible than nice. Slowly fading out against the similarly faded out background. Either they do have some natural beauty or not, they never do anything to look just a little bit better even on a special day. Maybe that has something to do also with the general reluctance towards any kind of bragging, I have yet to get to understand that.

      I agree here…. There are some women, especially older women, who dress very well, in quality well put together outfits. Like I’ll see women aged 60+ in matching sets, court shoes, silk scarf, just to go to the bakery! But I don’t see outfits that are original, innovative, creative, eye catching from a fashion point of view. Brussels is more timeless / conservative. For fashion that is innovative, go to the cities of Flanders like Gent and Antwerp.

On the topic of conflict : as a small country that has been invaded/ part of any other country in Europe it is in our blood to stay under the radar while trying to get away with as much as possible. About conflicts, i heard studies linking it to belguim being in the conflict zone between Germanis and Romanic culture, and very often border between -> france/ holy roman empire aka later Germany mostly.. If not somewhat diplomatic and conflict avoiding, chances were pretty big that at some (temp) occupation again, you would be killed by the occupyer.. so you could also argue that caused some natural selections at being able to do okay in clashing ideas and visions. Witch also helps explain the relative high number of Belgians in europe historical diplo functions :-). We are just best abled to she both a Germanic and Romanic culture vissions, since we are the only , before belguim existed region in europe where those overlap so much. We are about the only country being, in as well language as culture, romsnic snd germanic at the same time

    I don't know where you get the "girls get priority in elevators" idea. If you can afford the time to wait, you allow both men and women to enter the elevator before you do. If you don't have the time it is still considered good manners to at least give prioriry to people without the capacity to use stairs (disabled, elderly, pregnant, cyclists, people with suitcases, ...). If it is clear to a girl that you only do this for women, it is considered either patronising (you consider them either disabled or old), creepy or outright menacing (you are making them pass you into an enclosed space), especially if you then enter right behind them in front of other people. A big no-no.

    As a Belgian living in the French part in Brabant Wallon , man greet with a kiss as well. If you met for the first time it's hand shake but if you know them well it's a kiss . All my male friends that I know well we greet by a kiss. Great Video.

      True. But don't do that in Flanders. Men there would feel very uncomfortable with that. I am Flemish and studied in Wallonia. I really loved the experience and our Walloon fellow countrymen are great people, but this is simply something I never got used to.

    all big cities with transient workers has this friends problem. It ebbs and flows, sometimes you find friends moving to the city and other times you get friends and then you are leaving.

    Sometimes it's good to be "the foreigner" in a group. It means my social mistakes are more likely to be explained away by my nationality and thus forgiven!

      @@neilfromcork It’s true! I feel a big positive impact, especially when there is both French speakers and Dutch speakers in the same room. But Belgians are in general very forgiving people 😂
