BEST EVER Renault 5 GT Turbo Restoration (honest) #renault #carrestoration #renault5turbo
Hi, happy new year and good luck with this restoration. A nice colour will be the yellow that was available in Spanish phase 2 GTT version, you'll find some pictures at Google I suppose
You must fit washers and nuts to the rocker shaft studs or you will have no oil pressure to the shaft/rocker arms
Ah sorry got it. The two studs that go through the rocker! Thanks for the heads up 👍
Nice, nearly ready for fire up! I normally normally just stuff any openings up i.e oil and exhaust/inlet with some clean micro cloths, also when using that screwdriver method to help find TDC i just wrap a bit of black tape around the end of the screw driver to avoid marking the piston.
Great tip! Thanks. Trying to work out if it’s possible to “fire up” without putting it back into the body… got a feeling it could take me a while!!
@Renault5Rebuild Yea it's possible, but a lot of faffing about, just drop it in and fire it up, it will be fine.
Thank you for share! Good job! 🤩
Thanks for watching!
I loved this car in its day! 4 wheel drifts round roundabouts (ahem!). But it would run out of steam top end (which is good by any stretch of the imagination) and would get hot, unlike my mate's Fiat Uno Turbo. Don't see them much either these days. Great times
100% agree. Afraid this 5 won’t be driven like it probably used to… 😈. Going to think about the overheating issues.
Excellent work dude… it looks amazing 👍🏻 for storage I thought you spray fogging oil into the cylinders? I’ve got some if you want to 👍🏻
Cheers dude! Will take you up on that.
Think your missing the nuts and washers on the studs at the end of the valve gear /rockers
Am I? Do you mean where the rocker connects to the head?
Can't wait to hear it run. Good job keep it up. Your subscribers should increase
I agree, can’t wait!! Thanks for the support!
Nice one! I thought for a moment that "I am done." in the thumbnail meant something went horribly wrong and you'd had enough of it all... BTW if you ever do need to find TDC by sticking something down the bore you're unlikely to damage it with a screwdriver but you can always use something made of plastic or wood for peace of mind.
Not going to give up that quick 😉. Thanks for the tip, if I hadn’t still had the gauge attached I was thinking of using something plastic. Hope your enjoying the content and thanks for the support
At last the engine is done! Hope you enjoyed.
Old school machining! It's a dying thing. Helicoil, the thing that was snapped off is the "tang" I work in aerospace engineering and fit a lot of helicoils in my time.
Think, if you change colour, every square inch of the car needs to be painted and more importantly, did the turbo ever get a Gordini paint colour? Paint it the wrong colour and it will devalue it.
When you rebuild the car I would go as original as possible. Have you seen how much a 5 turbo is worth in top condition? Oh, and the value keeps going up.
There is a channel here called Seaside Garage, it’s a fella in Denmark who did a full engine rebuild on a 5 turbo in his garage much like yourself. Look his channel up and it may help you as you go along. He also restored the car and warns about the well known catching fire risk the turbos had. It was a couple of years ago but just look up the various videos he made.
Front seats come out with the rails attached, unchecked easier to get out just 4 bolts.
ooo god i remember these back in the day... they were SOOO MUCH FUN to drive it was like being sat in a roller skate doing 130MPH.....
It’s a tap! Drill and tap a hole
Looking good now mate, almost there!
Hello mate I’m selling my fully welded t5 get and complete project if you know anyone interested.Great videos btw really enjoying them
Thank you so much for the video!
Glad it was helpful!
Used to love watching Mark Evans TV series, and he would say "Always finish on a high", as you'll be on a high when you go back to that job the next day. Better than pushing on.
That’s a good tip. Feel a lot better after this video!
'Thread-cutter' = "tap", as opposed to the "die", which cuts an external tread on a rod.
I knew it had a technical name 😃
Great job!! Thanks for all those details! Need to start with mine as well. Haven’t build a complete engine myself but this gives me much of comfort to do so 😊. Good luck with the body work!
Go for it. Everyday is a learning day.
You're old man knows his stuff. From someone that's worked in motorsport engineering for many years.
Yeap, bit of a legend
Excellent work dude… stick with it 👍🏻 if you need any help just let me know :-)
100% matey. Going to try and work on it this week so I can get on with the bodywork asap
Yes I enjoyed the video. Yes I am subscribed. I don't understand not subscribing, I have over 200 now, and they are a doddle to administrate. I pay the £12 a month to skip the ads (YT were getting arsey and clever about my ad-blockers), I am 72 now and watch YT way more than TV, so it is a big part of my free time. I have been working on probably my last project (1998 BMW 840Ci) for about 7 years. There are many motivational ups and downs believe me. Hobbies are meant to be pleasurable, not to cause you stress, but it sometimes goes the wrong way. About 2 weeks ago, some horrible bastard stole 2 of my front wheels from outside my garage. They are rare and very expensive to replace. That set me back mentally for days. I have done 3 cars now, everything, mechanical, electrical body and paint, all in my own garage at home. Everything is do-able if you put your mind to it, which is often the problem. Good luck with the rest of the project. PS, don't make the mistake of other RUclipsrs, if there's anything you're not sure about, reach out before you make a decision, that way we can all pitch in and give you some advice, I've learnt so much over the last 10 years, a lot by doing it wrong first!
Hope you enjoyed the video! Onto body work asap!!
One forward two back is still better than just two back.
Your doing a great job and it will soon be coming together 👍🏻😊, I'm looking forward to the engine going back in, all the bits like brakes, suspension etc, and one day an mot and drive etc 👍🏻😊
You and me both! Thanks for your support
I can't believe the Renault 5 turbo was an ohv engine, live and learn.
😢
Wondered what Gareth Southgate was upto now. Nice content pal and well edited
Well I had to do something in retirement 🤣
Good effort, you would of had to of taken the head bolts out again anyway as you forgot to put the WASHERS back under them!!. And put the rocker arm on first, loosen all the tappets and their nuts off as far as you can before they want to come out, smear a bit of oil under the head of each bolt before you put the washers on then bolt all 10 head bolts down at the same time, then you can put the rods in afterwards and adjust down the tappets to spec.
Good spot! I forgot due to new bolts going back on… thanks for the heads up 👌
@@Renault5Rebuildno problem mate, fellow R5 owner, been running 5's for 30 years now, so i've done that job a 'few' times over the years!, although i no longer run the 1.4 C1J engine, i run a Clio 1.8 16v engine that i turbo'd and put in mine.
Hey. Sadly that's the problem with working on cars, especially 'previously enjoyed' ones. You are a step forward - you'll be more comfortable putting it together a second time. 😉
Thanks, I was annoyed but it’s part of the process. Thanks for the comment and support!
You wont ever adjust your timing once the engines in.. dial in some timing now, or just bang on the standard pulley if you're leaving it OE. If you regret my advice later on and wanted to adjust it, swap it then.. To adjust the timing in the engine bay is a nightmare, screwdrivers down spark plug holes, can't see fk all, it's never gonna happen.. on top of that, you aren't fitting a modified timing cover to get access to leave the rest sealed.. the full cam cover is a nightmare to seal after the engines chucked oil.. fit it, seal it, leave it.. If you do leave adjustable pulley on, you will most likely have to beat some clearance into the cover as the pulley bolt hits it.. it did on mine, so perhaps dont get attached to the fresh paint, youre about to ruin it..
Ahh good advice! Yeah expect the paint won’t look the same after a small amount of use. Thanks for the comment and support 💪
Excellent work dude… nearly there and it looks amazing!!
Cheers matey
Stick at it! Having the same issue with a central locking issue but at some point your progress will go forward again! Remember it’s worth it and you’re getting to know everything about your car better!
You are 100% right. Not going to give up on the old girl just yet 😉
@ it looks ace, the colour is lush and I look forward to seeing it. I have a blue phase1 with same wheels that I’m bringing back to reasonable standard but without full rebuild!
Advice for the future: For something like using a wire wheel/wire brush (or de-rusting with a multimaster or angle grinder) an FFP2-Mask (which most people have sitting around from covid) protects enough, and should be easier to "make work" on a smaller head/face than an adult breathing mask. (Also, running a vacuum (maybe not the one you're using in the house, just get some cheap one for the garage) near/next to what you're spray painting reduces fogging (and thus also overspray on stuff that you don't want painted)
@@Happymali10 thank you! Wonderful advice. It’s as if kids aren’t meant to be getting involved with this type of work. 😉
The first experiments are the most difficult! Plating any metal is very sensitive to preparation plus voltage and current. You're probably ok voltage wise but a bit low current...you can overcome that to an extent by leaving it longer. Prep is a different story as you might need acid or alkaline pickling (not sure for nickel) and clean water rinse. Its a bit of a black art!
CHEERS from AUSTRALIA
Hello! Hope you enjoyed the video! 🇦🇺
Hi Gregg and Imogen. Just found your channel, binged all the videos and subscribed! I really love the father/daughter vibe. I am 72 now and on my last project I think (1998 BMW 840Ci). I have tried to get my son, (42 now), interested, but he does not want to know, so you are really lucky. Back in 1988, I had an Escort RS Turbo (REALLY wish I had kept that!) and my best friend had a Renault 5 GT turbo. We both had our cars up-rated by Turbo Technics in Newcastle, and they did a great job. I can probably give you bits of good advice, I've been tinkering for over 50 years and restoring for about 12 years, but the problem with RUclips as I see it is that every commenter is an expert, so you need to be careful who you take notice of. Anyway, good luck with the project, and remember it is normal to lack motivation every now and then and get totally fed up with it.
Thank you for your kind comment and pleased you are enjoying our videos. Think we will be contacting turbo technics soon to organise either the turbo to be fixed… or worse case replacement. Hope your restoration goes well.
Im guessing thats actual matt black engine paint and not just a can of matt black? Engine paint is rated for temperature and chemical spills..
Indeed it is.
such a sweeeet video!
Thanks!
Hi really like the videos.Well done both of you. I think the problem with the plate is contamination. I'm not an expert on plating, but from what I've seen there's usually a couple of cleaning/acid dip process before going to the plating bath as they need to be spotless. The other thought is that the marks look like where you rubbed your finger after the first round in the plating bath. Keep going, it's all a learning curve. ;-)
Thanks for the tip! I think you might be right… given it a quick light sand and going to try again!
Reds ok, but if you ever get damage, it's a pig to colour match.. gordini or 182 racing blue is nice, but phase 1 electric blue with a black or textured phase 1 kit and grill is superior..
Thanks for your comment! 100% going to be a Renault colour… we will see!
