Take a tour of my 2000 2500 Chevrolet Suburban as I discuss why I like these monstrosities. The Suburban is the longest running automotive nameplate; since 1934 there has been a Suburban. They must be doing something right! The combination of the LQ4, 4L80E and HD Suspension on the 2500 are rock solid. I love my 05 burb Z71. I do miss my 01 Crew Cab F150 4x4. I drove 8 hrs, and it did good on gas. It was the 4.6L and da damn good truck. I spent $70 in my k1500 350 carbed just for a 4-hour trip. I did tow a vehicle for 2 hrs and empty trailer for 2 hrs, but the k1500 guzzles gas. I will wait to comment on my mpgs for the Suburban because it needs a new engine, fuel injectors, and likely a new fuel tank to be sure there's no debris going forward. I bought it cheap with 350k abused miles. At least the transmission shifts are good.
@@Wicked_RotF30 I had a 97 4.6 5 speed step side 4wd at the same time as this suburban, the suburban got similar fuel mileage. But mine is a 2500 with a 6.0, the 5.3 1500 trucks get 15-17 highway. They are both great trucks! I think the 10th gen Ford trucks had great interior and drove awesome. I didn't like working on the 4.6, doing plugs and a starter took longer than an engine in a Chevy 🤣 but I didn't have to work on it a lot. I also have a carbed 350 squarebody suburban...it gets 10 tops 🤣 I think you'll find the suburban a great road trip vehicle!
Noise and seal problems encouraged me to buy a 92 tin top. The new to me tin top also has perfectly working R12 A/C.
@@offgridliving4128 awesome find! Finding a 92 tin top is hard enough....one with working original R12?! Someone really loved it. Congratulations!
I remember Yellowstone in our 92 tracker, was a glorious day and we left the top in our rv at fishing bridge 😂😂😂😂by 11 that night we was totally frozen before we found our way back 😂😂😂
@@ClarencegHamm oh man...I know that feeling! I had the roof off in the morning in Island Park and my wife refused to get in...good thing I listened. It was literally below freezing! 70 during the day and 25 at night 😳
Thank yhou! I have a 2001 Suburban in Green and it's also got 320,000 miles on it with most miles touring Mexico. Today, I have the car in Mexico getting a new paint job given it's an Arizona car with some sun damage. The 5.3 engine doesn't use a drop of oil on large trips, so that's unusual. I am upgrading the interior. With these you can feel the road, but the newer ones you are more divorsed from the road, so I'm staying with this older style as I move to Mexico - great because I travel with the two dogs.
@@dennishassler605 this generation really was the last reliable and simple Suburban. I often see these with 500k+, glad to hear you found one and drive it everywhere! Thank you for watching
@@tommyistommy My Suburban is outstanding and very, very reliable. I rarely have an issue, but when I do if I'm traveling in the depth of Mexico there's ALWAYS mechanics that can work on the car. Once, in Guanjuato, I was able to replace the water pump quickly and economically. Moreover, I also have an 06 GMC Envoy Denali with the 5.3 V8 and it's required a lot more maintainence - I've rebuilt the entire vehicle so it's fine for another 100K miles and GM did a good job on this car giving it an aluminum head and durable enterior, too. I have 200k miles on it, but it drives like a sports car. Americans should stick with their old cars, because the new cars are built for the government and NOT for the people.
@@dennishassler605 I completely agree! I rent new cars often for work and they are poorly built in every way. I have issues with brand new vehicles during my rental for the week...I could not imagine owning one personally. Vehicles from 96-06 are pretty much the best in terms of reliability, comfort, simplicity to work on and build quality. I have 5 vehicles and they are all from the late 90s/early 2000s. I could easily afford a new car, just don't want one!
@@tommyistommy Ha, ha!! Exactly and the newest ones are totally strange with more electronics and there's not even a rear axil - I don't see these new suburbans lasting very long and the maintenance will kill you, so it's so much better to have those olders ones that are so reliable. It's better to have an older car in Mexico to keep a low profile. I just paid $150 for a new headliner installed in Mexico - they didn't do the visors yet, but they had excellent material and refused to use the cheap Amazon material.
I have a 94 4x4 auto and a 99 4x4 5 speed 2 door hard top. The 94 is my daily, repainted metallic green. Camo seat covers soft top. The 99 is my hot rod, repainted metallic silver, locking rear diff etc. etc. Love them will have them forever. Enjoyed the video, thanks.
@@donanything6816 awesome thank you for watching! I had a green 94 that started my love for these vehicles. If it had AC I never would have sold it! They really are special vehicles, I'm glad there's people out there who appreciate them as much as I do

LoL complete opposite of JDM
@@iamdale2309 I'm very well aware it's an American car built in Canada 🤣 my point is, people pay 5-10x what the 4th gen sells for and get pretty much the exact same performance and potential. 320hp, removable roof panels, 3200-3400lbs, 6 speed, legendary motor, hatchback design....describes both a 80k mk4 supra and 8k ls1 f body. Even the handling is pretty damn similar, the 4th gen with panhard rear and double wishbone front suspension handles way better than it gets credit for. I've owned supras, 300zxs, 3000gts...the 4th gen is honestly better driving than all of them and I feel like it's overall performance gets overlooked due to the stereotypes and image which is sad as an automotive enthusiast

Came here for the tires as I’m planning to put them on my burb. They look good and sound like they perform well 👍🏼. Hopefully the tires are still performing up to or exceeding expectations. Not sure why you keep saying full depth siping is exclusive to Firestone and Bridgestone as it is not, many manufactures do this (Continental, Pirelli, Michelin, etc)

34:43 definitely are awesome cars i have a 97 T/A and also a 01 T/A love them both but in terms of aftermarket support it’s kinda limited especially when you’re comparing it to a 240 or any sorta JDM car that has every part aftermarket under the moon lol i trying to build my 97 into a “stance” car basically just wanna close the wheel gap and there’s only like 2 coilovers brands for these cars and most involve cutting or converting etc i mean other then that these cars are so fun to work on and easy 1st V8 cars definitely love the vid brother hope to see more on your red t/a
@@Aziakkuu interesting! I didn't realize they were that limited when going low. I never really wanted my f bodies any lower, they already scrape the earth stock! Somehow corvettes are even worse! For beating on daily, they really do everything well. I was not expecting them to be such fun daily drivers, especially considering how the earlier f body cars drove. They barely feel related! Appreciate it, there will be more videos up soon on both of them
subscribing to help you because I'm looking at the Dueler Ascents for my Titan - and NOBODY has a review for it. You do - so well done. @Bridgestone - give this guy some props.
@@DarthMWAL appreciate it! I was very excited for this tire and also surprised that nobody else has any reviews, footage or impressions online. I'm nearly 5k miles in on these and still very impressed. They are as quiet as a highway tread tire, perform great in the loose sand/mud I've had them in and the fuel efficiency improvements have continued. I'm really looking forward to the winter performance, the Firestone Destination X/TS I had on prior were excellent in the snow
@@tommyistommy same here. I am looking to buy the Bridgestone Dueler AT Ascents for my 2024 Toyota Tundra and nobody has reviewed them. I mainly drive on highway and don't do any off roading at all. I just need a non winter tire that is approved for winter. I live in Quebec, Canada where it's the law to have winter tires but I drive to Florida after x-mas and only return to Canada end of March.
@@cmambro5 I think these will work out well for you. They really track well on the highway, great steering response and quiet/comfortable ride. They are 3 peak mountain/snowflake and have a 60k mileage warranty even in the LT fitments. As soon as the snow flies I'll get back with winter impressions, based on the full depth 3d siping and tread design they should do really well. Bridgestone/Firestone seems to have figured out the right compound also, my X/Ts I had prior got me up the ski mountain 60+ days in 2wd!
@@tommyistommy Thanks :) Feels like it's the best of all worlds. I really want a non winter tire that is approved for winter so that I'm okay in Montreal, QC, Canada until the holidays. Looking forward to more of your videos.
My 2000 2500 has a trans temp. Good vid though.
@@Ace-44Thank you! Perhaps mine does not have the factory towing package...that would be a strange omission on a 2500 Suburban. It has a factory trans cooler which makes it even stranger that the gauge is not there.
@tommyistommy Yea that is kinda odd. Good looking Burb though! I'm pretty sure you can swap a cluster with a trans temp if you really wanted to. Just bought mine about a month ago. Haven't even got around to detailing it but already had the second row down and third row out in order to transport storage lol. I luv it!
@@Ace-44 awesome! The suburban really is one of the most practical and useful vehicles ever made. If you don't need a pickup bed, there's nothing better than a suburban for utility. @tommyistommy I agree! Hope mine reaches as many miles as yours has and more! Good luck with yours!
I really like the look of those new Deulers. I was just looking at them on the tire rack site earlier today, with all that stiping they look like they would be amazing in the snow, kind of blows my mind that they're not 3Peak rated. Also, I have a 5th gen 4Runner, and I agree that the new Toyota offerings are not at all impressive.
@@trailrunnah8886 Thank you! They actually are 3 peak in all sizes, the specs on Tire Rack are completely wrong. The full depth 3d siping is very similar to the Firestone Destination X/T that I replaced them with, I'm looking forward to seeing how they do in the snow!
@@tommyistommy oh great, thanks for the info! Never thought I'd have Bridgestones on my list, but now they are. This 4R came with Dueler HTs when I bought it, they were horrendous in the snow. Oh, and I forgot to mention, rad Suburban! I love those, and the Hummer wheels look way better than I would have thought.
@@trailrunnah8886OE tires are nearly universally terrible unfortunately. Manufacturers just want the vehicle to hit fuel economy targets and ride smooth for the test drive. Sure, there are exceptions on high end trims but normally the tire that comes from the factory was an accounting decision, not so much an engineering one. Thank you! I was not sure how they would look especially being a 22 inch wheel on an older vehicle. Gotta love GM going back to the old bolt pattern for absolutely no reason whatsoever 😂
They are 3 peak rated.
Tire "review" at 26:40 & 33:50. ..you're welcome 👍 Was that mpg hand calculated or per the dash readout?
@@lauderdalechad thank you! The mpg is hand calculated, I have never trusted the dash readouts...and they didn't add that functionality until 2003. The trend has continued for 3k miles, I am just as amazed as I initially was at just how low rolling resistance these tires are

What tire size are you running again? I am shopping tires for my Tracker and the tire shops online are default showing me 205-75-15. The tires on my Tracker currently are 225-70-15 Stock is 27.1 inches tall and 8.1 inches wide and the ones on mine is 27.4 tall and 8.9 wide. Not much taller then stock thats why the speedometer is still on point. I just want to find the best deal and stay around the 27 tall range to not jack up power. I know if I go stock street tires my acceleration and fuel economy will improve a little.
@@JohnDrivesAnything I totally get it, I'm running 215/75r15 Firestone Destination LE3s. They are a great street tire and do awesome off road and in the snow. Not super aggressive looking though! It's slim pickings in 15 inch fitments these days.
@@tommyistommy Im going to shop those 3 sizes. I think the DOT code when my tires were built are on the other side. If my tires are more the 5 years old I'm changing them I hope they are still under 5. Cooper HT3s These are $200 each tires! Cheapest tires I've found so far are $82 each!

This is the best version of the Suburban IMO. I did some research and wanted something for overlanding to replace my 01 crew cab F150 4.6L v8 that i lost on title pawn. I still have my 96 K1500 Z71, but I would keep that crew cab F150 and other vehicles if i could do it over again. I was torn on an Excursion or Suburban at the time. Did some comparisons and the auto 4wd plus ease of maintenance was the selling point over the Excursion. I found my 2005 Z71 Burb for just $2300. It needs some work, but it gets the job done as a daily driver with over 350k miles at time of purchase. The trans was already replaced. I plan on installing a new engine in the future.hope to road trip it across the country and overland it when I’m financially able. The trucking industry is at a low point right now, but it will bounce back eventually. New subscriber. I too am a car person. I currently have 6 that neighbors keep complaining about too many vehicles in my yard. I inherited my father’s 2001 2wd F150 v6 and P71 Crown Victoria that i plan on installing a new engine in as well.
@@Wicked_RotF30 Appreciate the follow, thank you! I think you made a great choice with the Suburban, they are definitely easier to work on than the 10th gen Ford platform. I had a 97 regular cab flair side 4.6 5 speed f150 right before I bought the suburban, doing a starter and plugs in that truck took longer than a motor swap in a GMT800! I use mine to overland pretty frequently, I don't even have it built out, I just bring a full size mattress and have enough room for it and all my stuff with the flat cargo area. The z71 package is great, they almost always have the shortest gearing, awesome roof rack, skid plates and the rear locker. If I was getting another half ton, it would be a z71 100%. Rust and transmissions are about the only things that kill these trucks Hope to see you out there enjoying it cross country soon 😎
Still liking the new Bridgestones?
@@Blue-wj3ik I am, they really perform awesome in everything I've put them through. I cannot believe the fuel economy improvement, they must be very low rolling resistance. @Ballen1182 black with tan leather is the best color combo! It's crazy how that car would sell for 3x what it did in 2016 today
fourth gen. And the sixth gen actually weighs several hundred pounds more.
@@michaelm3381 4th gen has my vote too! The 6th gens drive awesome, they hide their 3800lbs pretty well all things considered
I thought the 5th and 6th gen Camaros were bigger than 4th gens. Nice comparison video.
@@firebird5288 the 4th gen is actually about 4 inches longer than a 6th gen and 2 inches longer than a 5th! I had to look it up myself, the 5th and 6th gens feel like larger cars and definitely weigh a lot more
Imo last of the good ones but around a 97 Burban and the Tahoe I had a 97 1500 5.7 4x4 oh and if you take the back seat out and fold the first row you can fit a full sheet of plywood or 4x8 sheet of Sheetrock
@@MattBerg-t3w I agree! I do not like the gmt900s as much, overall quality just went downhill. The newer ones continued to use weaker suspension comments while interior space was more compromised. I will have another video up soon enough of fitting another thing inside the suburban ...a full size mattress for camping!
@@tommyistommy just watch out for the trans case grenade at least that's what mine did I had to lock it in to get home and move around yard and there is one trans that isn't reliable but I think they was mostly in the 1500s but I'm also to the 97 Chevy trucks my very first truck was a 97 z71 Silverado which was same as a lt had leather
Thank you for uploading this video of two great machines many don't see much. I see the Camaro F-bodies way more than the Firebirds, but I did recently buy a 1995 Firebird Formula equipped with the LT1 V8. Honestly, I plan to keep it as long as possible and it needs a full body paint job since the original owner had it peeling all on almost every panel, but it drives brand new with no check lights on.
@@CB12345 Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video and most importantly found your own Firebird to enjoy. LT1 cars are a lot of fun, the way the torque comes on early and the sound is amazing. The Camaro outsold the Firebird by 2 to 1, it was cheaper and there's a lot more Chevrolet dealerships than Pontiac ever had. I know I greatly prefer the taillights, seats, dash design and pop up headlights of the firechickens
