    Walking a 12 minute mile is phenomenal. My fast pace is just below 15 and to go any faster I have to jog. I'm 5'10" and you're 6'1" so maybe it is a stride thing... still, that's impressive. Obviously you prepared well because your AT thru-hike was a success, so congrats on that! I started last year to prepare for a Grand Canyon backcountry trip and took a similar approach to your's, which was successful as well. I'm going to do AT from Springer to NC in April '25. Thanks for taking the extra time to take videos during the hike and post them. Very helpful.

      Hey, no problem. It took a while to work up to doing 12 minute miles for multiple miles, but it is achievable. Realistically, it’s not really necessary to move that fast. It just helps build up cardio. You won’t need or want to move that fast on the AT. It’s all about perseverance rather than speed. Congratulations on getting your attempt planned, and I wish you all the luck. Let me know if you Vlog it. I’ll follow along.

    At 10:34 and many times before there is a bird singing and soon after you ask what kind of bird that is. Hope I'm not answering the wrong question but if you're asking about the one that sings at 10:34 and earlier, it's an Eastern Wood-Pewee.

    • @ChuckHowell-Outdoors
      @ChuckHowell-Outdoors 6 дней назад

      Thanks. That was what I was wondering. You’ll hear it a lot on the trail.

  • @StamfordBridge
    @StamfordBridge 9 дней назад

    You talk about fearmongering in this video. And boy, is there a lot of it online in terms of what critters to be paranoid about on the AT -- human and non-human. Most of it strikes me as blather from people taught to fear life. But the only critter that will have me wary on the trail is the tick. Now that's a critter that can truly harm you if you're unprepared or just unlucky.

    • @ChuckHowell-Outdoors
      @ChuckHowell-Outdoors 6 дней назад

      You’re exactly right. Treat your clothes regularly with permethrin (including your hat and socks) and check yourself every evening. I never pulled the first tick off of me.

    • @StamfordBridge
      @StamfordBridge 6 дней назад

      @ That’s great to hear you never had one on you. The videos give the impression that you waited until the coldest months were over before you started to treat your clothes and gear. Is that correct?

    • @ChuckHowell-Outdoors
      @ChuckHowell-Outdoors 6 дней назад

      Yes. Never saw ticks until it got warm

    Oh, look, I'm in someone else's video! Haha. That's me at 5:42, in the orange puffy under the umbrella. 😆 I believe I passed you all going the other way on your second day. I was hiking from Sloan Bridge to Burrell's Ford. I definitely remember passing Scott and Stick.

  • @StamfordBridge
    @StamfordBridge 11 дней назад

    I see a lot of white blazes along the way as you hike, but I hope there are a lot more than are caught on camera, because some of those rocky, scrambly passages didn't always look clear on camera in terms of which way the trail was going.

    • @ChuckHowell-Outdoors
      @ChuckHowell-Outdoors 10 дней назад

      There are, but you do have to really look for them in some of the rocky areas. That’s where the FarOut app helps.

    Chuck, I’m in the market for a new wireless mic system for my iPhone. Do you use a wireless mic? If so, what system do you use?

    • @ChuckHowell-Outdoors
      @ChuckHowell-Outdoors 15 дней назад

      I used a cheap wireless mic set from Amazon. It worked very well. I did have to buy the “Dead Cat” wind guard separately. The Mike I used was the Boya wireless Lavalier mic for iPhone 15. It’s only $40 and I received several comments on how good it sounded in the wind.

    I’ve had a similar rainy, cold experience on the Foothills trail and probably will again at the end of this month. I’m planning on doing Oconee to Bad Creek. Chuck, you and a few others had inspired me to attempt the Appalachian Trail in 2025 but I know long sections are closed due to hurricane helene. That’s why I was surprised to hear you talking to those folks who were going to do it anyway. So they think doing all those flip flops is still feasible? Certainly it will be at least a year before those damaged sections are repaired. If you can let me know what their plan is.

    • @ChuckHowell-Outdoors
      @ChuckHowell-Outdoors 15 дней назад

      I didn’t hear all of the plans. Most of the trail that will open is open. There will be sections that they will have to be shuttled around, but the trip is still feasible. Shuttles are inevitable anyway, and they will miss some in NC, but after NC they should be fine.

  • @StamfordBridge

    Watching you and thinking about a future thru-hike. I'd do so many things the way you do, but I think I'd want a hat that shades more of my face and neck. You weren't concerned about that?

    • @ChuckHowell-Outdoors
      @ChuckHowell-Outdoors 14 дней назад

      As you watch more of my videos, you will see that I actually got one for the same reasons. It actually became a bit cumbersome, especially in the rain. There weren’t so many exposed areas that the sun rarely ever became a problem.
