"To An Angel" is a piece that I wrote in 2020. It's more of a sketch really, showing all the transparency of a draft. I recorded it along with Franz Liszt's "Années de Pèlerinage" in Weimar in 2020. At the time I decided not to publish it but now it seems accurate to do so. May its fragileness attract good spirits to this world. A special Thank You to Christopher Link at the camera who caught t...

    Wow. This is a very strong evidence towards the existence of double beat. And the fact that Maelzel puts the name of Beethoven using it in the “wrong way” solves for me the problems related to his music

    Mr.Ruchti, first and foremost I would like to thank you with all my heart for your work. It is an inspiration to listen to your interpretation. Can you elaborate on the logic that stands behind your choice of tempi for each movement? Is there a scientific method you had employed or the call to the intuitive side? Lots of thanks

    • @bernhardruchti
      @bernhardruchti День назад

      Thank you for your comment, I really appreciate it! As for my choice of tempo for each movement, there is of course always an intuitive element but I also tried to find at least a partly relation to Liszt's edition of the Sonata. I talk about this in my introduction to the Hammerklavier Sonata. Here's the excerpt about my tempo choices: ruclips.net/video/sngOu5g1wIY/видео.htmlsi=omCvaODELqBogw9a The main issue is the fact that the metronome markings published in Liszt's edition do not match with the duration he gives ("almost an hour"). I therefore took the movement on which he visibly worked the most: the Adagio, and arranged the rest from there in order to get "almost an hour". But as you rightly say, in the end there is intuition in all of this!

    These moderare tempi succeed in nullifying all the discomfort, all the untrodden modernity, of this work. That said if you want to hear a more observant slow (wrong-headed) performance, one should punch up (on RUclips) by the composer Ernst Levy.

    Wow. Just wow. I mean, to think that the same person that played Chopin and Beethoven at those slow tempi (in a very musical way I must say) he's at the same time a composer with a very modern taste ("modern" in the sense of contemporary) it's truly something. I wonder what music - outside of classical - do you listen to, I hear echoes of many things (it reminds me a little of Keith Jarrett, which is interesting because Liszt himself sometimes was way ahead of his time, and I'm not referring only to his late pieces... take for example one of the Harmonies poétiques et religieuses, "Hymne de l'enfant à son réveil". The first few bars are pure Jarrett especially when played without too much rubato).

    • @bernhardruchti
      @bernhardruchti 10 дней назад

      Thank you so much for your comment! It's true that I listen to a lot of different styles and genres. I'm not that much of a Jazz person but I do love film music, minimal music, Folk and Chanson and many others 😀 I fully agree that Liszt was way ahead of his time. Speaking of Harmonies poétiques et religieuses: do you know the first version from 1834? It's one of the most visionary pieces ever written, in my opinion.

      @@bernhardruchti I'll read at the piano by myself then, I used to be a concert pianist in my 20s, I "drop" classical music (as a performer at least) in my 30s for pursuing a career in pop music (go figure!). It's funny that in my young years I was very devoted to speed and virtuosity - as a means to express a certain musical vision - while now I like slower tempos (not always though). Anyway, congratulations again for your beautiful composition.

    You have made an impact in my musical life. As a graduate of Juilliard in the 70s I was caught up with tempos at breakneck speed. Now I totally understand the truth. Double beat makes sense and the nuances appear beautifully. Thank you for you channel. . If I play again in Alice Tully hall I will owe you everything concerning tempi . Pianists play etudes of Liszt and Chopin at speeds so fast there is little music spoken. Thank you. Even Mozart and Beethoven work very well at your tempi. Double beat. Op26 sonata Beethoven scherzo and final movement work so much better at double beat. We can add perhaps 10 percent to “satisfy” modern ears but no more than that. Thank you. We must speak. Wow. I can ACTUALLY hear the melody and harmony sing! People think etudes are about speed but they’re COMPLETELY a different thing. Technique is not about speed but fluidity, legato, cantabile singing tone, releasing tension in the hands and arms to produce a proper singing tone and ease of performance. You lose most of these with the ridiculous speeds most of these etudes are performed at!
