Leopold Godowsky once again dazzle the world of music by performing his heartfelt rendition of Chopin's Scherzo in B flat minor. Unfortunately, to fit the recording criteria, much of the piece had to be abridged.

Leopold Godowsky plays his own abridged interpretation of Liszt's Rigoletto Paraphrase. He does not follow the score religiously and also includes some of his own improvisation during the performance. Nonetheless a marvelous performance!

Wonderful playback of a Godowsky's mesmerizing performance of Chopin's Ballade No. 1. Keep in mind that piano rolls do not and should not completely justify any performance.

Gute Nacht(Winterreise no. 1) - Schubert/Godowsky
Leggierezza was recorded on 78's. It's not as spectacular as the roll but more representative of what he sounded like.
Thank you for this moving video. Ending with the out-of-tune Alt Wien on piano roll is a brilliant touch. There's not much of a folk ethos from Godowsky (to state the obvious) but, nonetheless, even the most refined musicians learned something about music at a dance.
I like the patience in the playing of the great Sonata! It is interesting how notes are accented for the last movement - I hear things that I previously don't!
Why is it so fast? is old styles always like that?
Godowsky is known to have high technical abilities. Some old style pianists play faster while some slower. Raoul von Koczalski plays some of Chopin's etudes much slower but it's still convincing given how musical it is.
Interesting
Il terzo movimento come lo esegue Michelangeli nessuno secondo me
thanks for this
1:33 why is he playing G flats in that bar?
Best recording of this piece along with hofmanns
busoni and hambourg r also peak
@oldschoolscores true! And Friedman
Bravo! A quick note - Ravel indicates in each movement that grace notes are to be played on the beat, and I hear all of yours coming before the beat. Very nice playing, otherwise.
Clunky and rhythmically insecure. Next.
The second recording sounds like midi. Sigh. I wish people understood that bach improvised this on the spot, on an organ, with no pedal, in a huge reverberant acoustic. These pieces need an organ.
Busoni did try to make it more pianistic with the ossias especially in the first movement. But hey, now more people know about the original piece!
Enormous! One of my favourite busoni/bach transcriptions. Great performers also
Hilarious
1809 : année solaire : quatuor 10 , concerto 5 ; grandioses Sonates 24 , 26 , 26 ; intimissimres . Lieder opus 83 : entre les deux....
Horovitz the Best here! The duo variant of recording. Its too cute, but no deep
I never realised there was a time when piano rolls were better option than audio recording.
Except if the roll tempo is too fast as this one is...
WOW! Love his point of view.
Morgengruss and Gute Nacht are fabulous; there are more subtle performances of Buitzenborg from other pianists--1935 was post-stroke for Godowsky. It's not bad, but it's not on the level of the other two.
This piece is super difficult lol, as with much Godowsky stuff. I remember giving up on it because it was a pain to learn. Moiseiwitsch plays it effortlessly
LOL I gave up on it too for the same reason. Small world.
Everything just feels right. La campanella sounds like a bell ringing, un sospiro feels like someone is taking a short breath, and la leggerezza feels very volatile but clean. I love this
the S144 is crazy
Which one from S144?
@@jamesrockybullin5250Oh, I meant on the f minor
i meant legierreza
@@kakoou3362 Those runs are unbelievable. Idk if it has to do with the piano roll or anything, but they don't really sound like piano to me. Supernatural.
@@jamesrockybullin5250 yes, piano almost all piano roll recording tempos are subjective when reproduced, but i think with this in particular, i think tempos were reproduced rather accurately, as the slower section is reproduced coherently
I would usually hate on la Campanella, but godowsky brings it in a new light. The same way I hated Chopin ballades, especially the first, Hofmann completely changed my mind on it. Truly wonderful.
Hating Chopin's 1st ballade is crazy 😂
@ I disliked it, especially the modern performances.
@Rach-Fanatic honestly there are a lot of good modern recordings
@ no, each recording I listened to may have had good technique, But not expression. Even before old school, I was always frustrated with modern recordings.
Godowsky -best ever, as always . .
I appreciate your efforts expecially because you idolize a great pianist of the Golden Age! Rachmaninov Lhevinne Godowsky Hofmann BackHaus Petri Paderewsky Sauer De greef Lamond Dohnany Bartok. The time Is a gift of God.Listen only to the Golden Age of pianists (generations Born from 1830 till 1886)and you LL learn a lot and Will have enjoyment for whole life
His La campanella is magical, perfect singing line but laid back Un Sospiro, and in the Gnomenreigen, you can hear the Dance of the Gnomes and perfect evenness in the 16th notes.
La Leggeirezza in my opinion is his greatest even though it’s just a roll recording. Perfect technique, tone, and conviction.
The left hand work is crazy
Pro!

A Colossus.......BRAVO from Acapulco!
Not within multiple orders of magnitude when compared to Rachmaninoff in this masterpiece, in my opinion. I have been generally very unimpressed by Godowsky's recordings, especially given his reputation. He was known to have an aversion for recording and asked that he not be judged by them. I think he was right about that.
Rachmaninoff himself held Godowsky in very high regard
@@chester6343 doesn't mean he played well while recording, which i find not as well as the likes of others. it's most likely due to his high level of stage fright, as he always experienced while playing in public and recording. hofmann allegedly told chasins to "never forget" what sound godowsky made while playing for them but that's because he was playing for friends
Thanks for sharing. I have never heard before and it is amazing!
WOW!
The piano rolls reproduced rubato accurately but only had 20 steps in dynamics. Godowsky hated his recordings and didn't want to be remembered by them. So if this is his worst can you imagine what his best sounded like?
He should record more and compose and arrange less.
編曲好きのゴドフスキーが、真面目にベートーベンへ敬意を表して弾いた素晴らしい演奏👏🎹✨✨😊
Really impressive, the finale is incredible.
Wonderful, thanks
Piano rolls fall somewhere between unreliable and useless as representations of the artist's actual live performance. Too much doctoring and mechanical jiggering.
Nice.
Some of the greatest piano playing ever..... Everything is absolutely magical.
A little too careful and ponderous. No grandeur, or rhythmic snap.
The coda puts modern pianists to shame. It's not just insanely fast--he brings out so much structure even at this tempo
The left hand bangs out a thrilling drum beat towards the finish. You feel like the world is going to end
The playing is amazingly fresh. This was only about a year before the stroke which forced him to stop performing, but he plays like a young man who can't contain his excitement.
This was exactly the style of Godowsky. 11:21 Beethoven (Himseld !) indicates "Vivacissimamente" which means "play as fast as possible and even faster" It must be a run .......
It’s one of his greatest records and one of his last.
Que ouro, nunca tinha ouvido este
love the thumbnail
Godowsky wrote insanely difficult piano music, but he could play as well. As I now know.
yes, but his studies are not music, just noise
@@giuseppetarabella4018 have you heard his Java suite ? It's so good, check it out!

Это поледняя вещь, записанная Годовским в его жизни и карьере. По свидетельству его домашних он тогда страшно нервничал, ему не нравилось, он вернулся домой совершенно разбитым. Ночью его настиг инсульт, от которого он уже оправится не смог.
