STRING THEORY
Просмотров 157Год назад
This song is a good example of how I like to write music. It's the kind of music that's long enough for you to go deep, enter in and let the music take you on a journey. Like a good book or movie that you don't want to end. My goal is to always show the beauty and grandeur of Alaska, and I hope that my music does it justice and maybe captures some of that. Written, arranged and recorded by Rust...

Alaska Hammer Time 1

The first in a series of "life and times" videos about harvesting Alaska's amazing bounty. What a place! Where God's creation is so spectacular, it blows you away every single day!
Deep Water Crabbin'
Просмотров 2393 года назад
I always wondered if I could be a deckhand on the Deadliest Catch. But I figured I would outwork them all and make them feel bad. So, I decided to go do my own deepwater crabbing in Kachemak Bay, outside Homer, Alaska.
SALTWATER SAFARI
Просмотров 1913 года назад
I've been on safari in Africa on the Masai Mara, and Resurrection Bay in Alaska is comparable to the shock of how many animals you see everywhere. Whales to the left, sea lions to the right, here I am smack in the middle to view. Puffins to the front, otters to the back, eagles overhead. Glaciers in the mountains, bears on the beach. Is this place for real? Alaska's awesome!
Flying Humpback Whales Anyone?
Просмотров 9234 года назад
Imagine it: You're out fishing on Resurrection Bay at Seward, Alaska. Eagles fly overhead. Snow-capped mountains surround you. The fishing is intense. Salmon, rock fish, ling cod, halibut. It's awesome! But then, from about 700 yards away, we hear an enormous splash. Whales! Humpback whales! Quick, pull up your lines! We're driving in for a closer look. Oh man - there's nothing like seeing thes...
King Boletes and Oyster Mushrooms
Просмотров 5264 года назад
One of the things I like best about Alaska is the abundant food it supplies. The land is overflowing with fresh goodness and natural bounty. It's been rainy out lately, so mushrooms are all over the place, just begging to be harvested. We went hunting for them near Cooper Landing and were rewarded with King Boletes, Birch Boletes and Oyster mushrooms that my wife and I cooked up with some butte...
Saltwater Silvers - Double? Triple??
Просмотров 1204 года назад
Silvers in the saltwater are always so valiant and thrashing, with such a burst of energy, that we often loose about 30-40%. So, its always amazing when we get a double in the net, let alone a triple, which happened more than a few times on this trip. The Coho (Silvers) are the reason that I am in Alaska, After hooking my first one, I couldn't imagine not being here for their annual runs.
Kenai Lake Trout Lunch
Просмотров 3,2 тыс.4 года назад
The beautiful Kenai Lake, just outside of Cooper Landing, is the home and spawning grounds of some of the world's largest king salmon as well as millions of sockeyes and silver salmon. Our goal this trip was just a couple of lake trout for lunch. The gorgeous calm water, where, even in mid-June, we saw some snow at the water level, gave us the perfect day for photography as well as a tasty lunch.
Killer Whales Orcas Close, Closer, and Ohhh!
Просмотров 110 тыс.4 года назад
Resurrection Bay at Seward, Alaska, is where you will find one of the most amazing and abundant assortment of wildlife on the Kenai Peninsula, including sea otters, puffins, sea lions, eagles, and of course, the humpback and killer whales. With the beauty of glaciers and mountain scenery everywhere, this is truly my favorite place to be on the planet.
Russian River Reds & Bows
Просмотров 1 тыс.4 года назад
The Russian River confluence is where the Russian River meets the Kenai River, smack dab in the heart of the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska, just a few miles outside Cooper Landing. This is the spot! It's where Alaska's abundance and radical wildlife converge with hundreds of thousands of salmon passing through every summer and world class trophy rainbows making it their home drawing some of Alaska's ...
The Elusive Morel Mushroom
Просмотров 2784 года назад
Sometimes you can't find the morels anywhere. Other times you can find them somewhat easily. But during most spring seasons in Alaska, you simply need to put in some time looking, and in the most likely, productive places, and you will find them. And, as my friend Ray says, they are delicious little gems!
King Rod Halibut Mayhem
Просмотров 3134 года назад
This fishing trip ended with some halibut-thrashing mayhem. One of our favorite things to do when fishing for halibut in Kachemak Bay (Homer, Alaska,) is to use a King rod and jigs. Many times, we catch halibut so big that we're afraid the rod will break, even though we use medium-heavy to heavy king rods. We generally fish at about 120 feet deep. Kachemak Bay is gorgeous, with glassy water sur...
A Lingcod's Halibut Lunch
Просмотров 3914 года назад
Just when you think you've seen it all, Resurrection Bay, Alaska, often brings a surprise of some kind of wildlife. We did not expect to see a lingcod trying to eat our halibut before we could reel him in. And to our surprise again, he would not let go even when he was on the surface.

They really dont sleep for more than a few minutes anyway this guy had a pretty good distance, turned his engines off. That was good! Whats with all the nasty tones from people, this guy didnt intrude! Maybe keeping very low voices wouldve been better because their hearing is so keen but jesus people calm down. We all are on the same team -- anti captivity & F$CK Seaworld!!! I love those nice straight dorsals, you can always tell who the boys are. With mom 4 life! I wonder if they practice swimming & diving in perfect synchronicity? Its remarkable how on point they are, just stunning!! I❤Orcas!!

This is a beautiful video, but it looks like you deliberately approached them when you were already very close - isn't that illegal? Aren't you required to stop at a distance, to avoid stressing them or, in this case, disturbing their sleep pattern?

It was great to find this video. Our cabin was on the lake, off of Snug Harbor road, and I spent my childhood fishing the lake and surrounding waters. We would boat across to the mouth of Quartz creek and fish for hours. At one time I was hearing stories that the lake was commercially fished for salmon, but they would get 40-50 lbs lake trout. We never caught anything that large, however one of our trips to the mouth of Quartz we hooked into what was probably in the 18 lbs range, but lost it just a few feet from the boat,. So they are in there. On Summer evenings late, you could throw a spinner and catch them cast after cast. I have always been surprised that no one deep fishes to find really big ones and wondering if anyone ever will.
