Separating myth from fact around one of the most common global female health issues, recurrent UTI. We connect patients, clinicians and researchers around the topic of pelvic health.
UTI, Chronic Inflammation & Immune System Response: Dr. Indira Mysorekar
Dr. Indira Mysorekar is a Professor of Medicine whose lab group has made a number of significant discoveries in microbiology and microbial pathogenesis of UTI. One of these was the finding that E. coli can persist in reservoirs in the bladder and re-emerge to cause symptoms. This finding was a huge step forward for recurrent and chronic UTI research.
This interview answers the following questions and more:

Thaks a ton .It is really an informative session.Just on point information by dr.
I've had chronic bladder discomfort and pain for years, sometimes tests picked up a UTI, sometimes they didn't. Nothing really helped me until I started meditating regularly, which I think Dr. Mysorekar touches on when she says "mindfulness." Now that I meditate every day, the symptoms have all but disappeared, which I was NOT expecting. I started meditating after developing debilitating panic attacks, and the meditation allowed me to wean off the hard medication I was on to manage the panic attacks. It wasn't even on my radar that it might also help my bladder symptoms but it totally did! I think it also helped that I cut out sugar, which is highly inflammatory. It was BRUTAL but much more manageable if you up your protein intake.
That's amazing to hear. Thanks so much for sharing your experience.
Thank you for this helpful post. I practice mindfulness and it it makes a real difference. I still have symptoms but coping better with them and if I practiced more regularly maybe it would affect the symptoms too. It brings up the question about how much the mind affects the body ... in my experience a lot!
7.5 years I was suffering with UTI. Digital Microbiology was able to find my issue within 48 hours! Now the Doctors and Urologist are listening. I received an apology from the head of Urologist. I would definitely recommend everyone to at least have one test and for women to have both tests the vaginal swab and urine test and men should too.
Thanks so much for sharing your experience with this!
Very interesting and enlightening. Thank you
This video is so incredibly helpful and this Dr. is amazing. I wish she was my Dr. and all doctors were like her. And the interviewer did a great job asking great questions!
Thank you for your positive feedback! You're always welcome to reach out to us directly if you have any questions. We'll do our best to help: liveutifree.com/contact/
Very informative and helpful interview, even as a 15-year cUTI sufferer. The frustrating part is how long it takes research to trickle down to practice. Thanks to you both for all your work advocating for this community.
The timeframe from scientific discovery to practice is very frustrating! It's the main reason we started this series - so experts could share their work directly with the patient community.
@@LiveUTIFree your are a godsend! I have had so much helpful information from your work. Thank you so, so much for all you bring to us. This journey would be very much tougher without it.
This was very informative and exactly explains my past and current chronic/recurrent UTI and bladder status. I’m so thankful and grateful for all your research and connecting to medical professionals in this very limited field addressing a very common and serious issue. Hiprex and eString has kept me UTI free for the last two years after decades of suffering. Finding a cooperative physician for treatment is the most difficult. I got lucky… because when you don’t have to deal UTIs on a daily basis, your life changes exponentially. Thank you.
Hi.I am from India. How can I get hiprex and what is evstring?
@ Hiprex (or methenamine hippurate) and EString from Pfizer pharmaceuticals (I’m post menopausal - the vaginal creams and tablets had no effect) both require a doctor’s prescription. They may not be available everywhere. Even with living in California, it took awhile to get it because the urology specialists I saw had no clue it would benefit me. Good luck. I hope you can get them.
It's so encouraging to hear that you have managed to find ways forward despite how difficult that can be. Thank you for sharing and for being part of this community.
@@MOLLIMEDIAthanks a lot
I found this so helpful. A big thank you to Dr Mysorekar.
is it possible that reservoirs are present in the kidney? my infections always see to start in the kidney, which is scary as it makes me very sick.
Would be interested in that too, my pain is more in the kidneys now than the bladder and I feel quite rough sporadically. And yes, that's scary.
Our interview with Dr. Kymora Scotland covers some of this (it's about kidney stones and how infection in the kidneys can be behind this): ruclips.net/video/Eu8701-z1uA/видео.html. It seems likely that for some people there could be a reservoir in the kidney/s.
@@LiveUTIFree thank you, that's helpful. For me it won't be from kidney stones as I had a CT scan to check and there were none present. But will watch the video to see whether there are other ways that the kidneys harbour reservoirs.
I found this super helpful. I appreciated her thoughts on the complex interplay between infection, inflammation, aging and hormone. The part about d-mannose reducing tertiary lymphoid structures in the bladder is fascinating!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
This doctor is amazing. Far ahead of the times.
An incredible wealth of good information! Very relevant and helpful. It’s been a longtime frustration for me to be better educated than some of my doctors. We have to add an advocacy role during a time when we’re vulnerable to get successful treatment.
You're so right about the role of advocacy and how difficult it can be when you're already in a vulnerable position.
Can it cause bp to tank?
We have heard this experience from some members of our community. The experience of symptoms can vary greatly from person to person.
@ I fainted last week, bp in the 70’s. Rushed to ER, DX’d w dehydration (which I know can cause this) and a UTI. I was curious if the UTI itself could also cause this…
@@MarshaMarshaMarsh4 we haven't found any research that explains a direct link, so we can only go on patient experiences. I hope you're feeling better.
@ thank you 😊
Deepest thanks and hope!!!!❤❤❤
In most cases its because the insurance companies dictate to the drs what they can prescribe which is totally corrupt..
Oh, the question has been answered by the end of the video, thank you. I would happily travel, I am going to start saving now so I can be part of this, I have had non-stop re-occurrent UTIs for over 15 years, it's not only so painful, it's isolating & debilitating. I have been doing research at Eliava Institute of Bacteriophages and Microbiology in Georgia, Europe - however, it's too expensive to visit the clinic and get treatment, but it sounds like they have had great results in this area. THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU ARE ALL DOING !!!
Thanks for your interest in this research! We'll keep everyone informed of progress.
like one of the other comments here, I've also been told that "it has to be something else"; I've had strep B (streptococcus agalacticae) at one point, and was told by one doctor that they only treat it in pregnant women, so they won't treat me, and by another doctor that it does not cause urinary tract infections / symptoms (despite showing up on culture, however together with another bacteria), well, since I don't have it anymore (but still have the other bacteria) my symptoms have been much better
Thanks for sharing your experience with this! I'm sure many people can relate.
You are so sweet! I suffer from recurrent infections as well and am on Methanamine Hipprate. I am doing well on it. Have had flares but that's expected. Wish you much luck xox
It's great to hear that Hiprex is working well for you! Thanks for sharing.
I have recurring strep uti's for the past year. I could never get in with the urologist. The NP kept prescribing antibiotics. I finally asked that my urologist at least look at my history and he prescribed estradiol cream inserted vaginally 3 times a week. I'm not symptom free but much better than a UTI every month. My GP refused to put me on hormones and I am in menopause. You are not alone. I have had UTI's since I was 16, except up until this year they had always come back e coli.
It's so important to advocate for yourself like you have (though it shouldn't be so necessary!). I'm glad to hear you're doing better and I hope it continues that way.
Thank you for sharing your story! I recently had streptococcus bouvis detected in my urine and was prescribed levoflaxacin though I still feel lingering symptoms
Thanks for sharing your experience and supporting Jen through hers.
Thank you for sharing your story with us. I am so sorry for your pain. I have been there, it is a very discouraging condition and it wears on you not only physically but emotionally. Our healthcare systems has so many barriers to getting appropriate care. It is so hard waiting for the order for UTI testing, waiting for culture results, waiting to see if this antibiotic will finally work, all the whilel being in pain. Trying to find someone willing to help is not easy. The infectious disease specialist I was referred to told me he is sure that my symptoms are n howt a UTI, "it has to be something else" But he has never had a UTI so how could he know how it feels.
Thanks for sharing your experience. We'll make sure Jen sees all the supportive comments people are leaving.
Wow this clip is so informative, the more I learn the more I feel there will be no Dr here in Australia that will be able to address my suffering just like most people here I have been enduring never ending bouts of pain, inflammation, urgency with no resolution to my problem except courses of antibiotics and lots of candida as a result. A cystoscopy of my bladder showed damage to my bladder wall already but Urologists here don't accept there is such a thing as embedded bacteria, they only trust the results of the outdated urine culture tests which usually shows negative, it is disgusting that this severe problem that affects so many of us it being ignored by the medical profession here in OZ. A couple of times because they ignored my symptoms and gave me nothing for it I ended up in hospital with the infection already in the kidneys. I am really exhausted and have lost hope, I wish I lived in the US where the mentality of some doctors is far more advanced. Thank you for posting this amazing interview.

after six years of this and antibiotics buying all the stuff and hundreds of dollars, what worked was a week of womans boric life from amazon one week never had it again!
It's great to hear you found something that worked for you.
This is zero help for people with chronic uti. They need to identify the causitive pathogen - currently impossible. No discussion of how a phage could penetrate a biofilm. And no discussion of how a phage would reach bacteria embedded in your own cells. Maybe this will work for uncomplicated “normal” utis.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. The video discussed biofilms and how phage products might be developed in the future to target different organisms. The issues you highlighted are some of the reasons this type of research is so important.
@ This isn’t research- this is a for-profit startup. Solving a medical problem is just a potential byproduct of their desire to make money.

The preliminary survey-based study is still running. As outlined in the information materials, this study will provide the PHIOGEN team with the insights they need to best design a clinical trial for our patient community. The aim is to launch the clinical trial in 2025 and there will be a separate screening process for the trial. We will keep everyone informed of progress and how to apply for the trial, as we get updates from the PHIOGEN team. I am 67 yrs old and had never had a UTI before July 2024. I had burning urination that I noticed around the 8th of July. I went to the lab on July 10th and my primary prescribed Cipro tablets. By July 18, 2024 I called an ambulance. I was hypotensive, my renal function was at 4%. I was septic and I developed a secondary infection in my total knee replacement that was done in 2012. My kidney function has continued to improve. However, I am waiting to have a revision surgery on my total knee replacement. Don't ignore aUTI.
So sorry to hear about your experience, but thank you for sharing it - it highlights how serious a UTI can be.

Yes all those symptoms I've experienced
I keep getting the UTI Then about a week later my face swells so bad I can hardly see out my eyes, my ears get really itchy, I find myself clenching my jaw and then my teeth hurt too. Doctors aren’t listening! They keep saying I’m allergic to something! I always get a urine infection first, sharp pains in my kidneys! Before the face blows up. Look like I’ve been boxing without the bruises. I need help I can’t live like this I’m a single mum with 4 kids with disability’s that only have me to do everything for them. I can’t leave the house like this!
So sorry to hear you're experiencing this. Can you send us an email and let us know where you're based so we can share relevant resources? You can get in touch via liveutifree.com/contact
Yes, I just had to spend hundreds (more like a thousand) of £ on antibiotics, cause the NHS is incompetent or just sadistic. Thank goodness for people like Dr Malone-Lee (may get rest in power) for actually behaving like proper Drs and listening to patients instead of gaslighting into oblivion. Their research is saving countless lives 💖. I am lucky I can afford to do this at the moment (wasn’t always), I know that many cannot, and it’s criminal to needlessly waste lives when treatment would be so cheap to the NHS.
Sweden has a brilliant approach I’m going to try Look into it
Thanks so much for sharing your experience. I'm so glad to hear you've been able to access appropriate care.
i mean i’m only 15 and i drink a pretty good amount of water and i wipe and stuff well and im not sexually active but i still get utis all the time! i take azo everytime and it’s instantly gone! and i have learned that pushing gently on my eurethra helps get rid one that sensation and especially cool showers just letting the water run over there, but it’s still so annoying how often i get them

Wow, I have just found your channel. After recurrent UTIs when I reached menopause and finding that not much has happened for womens health for centuries, and a lot of myths about our lower pelvic area, it was just not taken seriously by the medical establishment. I am so happy to sit and watch two women talking seriously about this issue. One asking the right questions and one woman knowing the research at present and talking about it. So refreshing thank you both. I can hear a lot has to be researched still as womens vaginal, and urinary health as yet to be discovered. For me its as important as the moon landing for women.
Thank you so much for your positive feedback, we really appreciate it! You pretty much summed it up - much more research is needed in all areas of women's health.
I'm just a little confused....I thought lactobacillus etc...was in the probiotics.
Are you referring to the discussion about Lactobacillus potentially causing issues for some people?
@@LiveUTIFree I think just in general I thought lactobacillus was in probiotics
@@LiveUTIFree yes
@@johnotto989 Lactobacillus is included in probiotics because it was identified as a 'good' organism that already lives in various places in the human body. So it makes sense that you thought that!
