Staedtler mars lumo 3b 👌🏻
My apologies if you mentioned it but can you tell me how many books come in this set? I am a bit confused by the description on the Field Notes website. Thanks!
It is 2 sets of 2 notebooks. You can buy either of the two sets separately. Hope that makes sense!
I was looking for field notes but are so expensive here (Chile) that I decide to use the kilos of paper in my house and made my own.
Excellent idea!
I love that the slipcase is basically a template to make more of them out of cardstock etc
What pen or pencil do you carry and is it also in your back pocket?
It varies significantly through the year - always in the front pocket though. At the moment it’s a Bic Crystal in black, having just finished a Pilot G7. Others this year have been a Lamy safari fountain pen, TWSBI 580, and blackwing, Mitsubishi and tombow pencils!
I will try one of these inks. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
love your videos brother! question: on average how many pages do you fill out in a day? thx!
Thank you! It depends on the day but I’d say max 2 pages on a good day. Most days just 1 or less. It takes me about 5-6 weeks to complete one field notes.
I didn't even realise it was you until I saw your well used open fieldnotes, which made me think, "Those fieldnotes look very well used, like a certain texture aficionado on yt". XD
Haha thanks! I’m doing something right if I get recognized for my texture preferences!
If I had a Traveling Salesman, I would send it to you! Nothing from Ikea would be that easy. 😆
❤️
I love your field notes videos.. pity I cant find them here.. but making do with Muji books for now... the box is very interesting... good for storage..
Muji is a great substitute! Thanks for watching!
im afraid to open mine so im eager to see how you use yours for motivation and inspiration
Rip into them! I know the feeling, but nothing beats the feeling of using a notebook. Hope you get to use them soon!
brilliant video - thank you
Thank you for watching!
Having trouble finding the Field Notes 56 week date book not spiraled. Is there a model number or suggestion. Thank you.😊
None that I’m aware of! If you take a look at my first video from this year I go through a few options for date books.
I wasn’t sure how I would like this set, but now I’m really liking it. I’m using the date book to log my reading. I had wanted to track this in a simple way and this particular format works nicely. Simple to record and serves as a gentle nudge to read a little of something each day. Once I finish a half completed Field Notes notebook for recoding camping and hiking trips, the log book will be a great way to record these excursions. I too love the little sleeve. Since I keep notebooks for dedicated purposes, the sleeve would help keep areas a little neater than the loose stacks I currently use. They also make for a great archive tool when books are completed.
Thanks for sharing! I love that logging the reading in the notebook is the driver for reading - that speaks to me!
Really enjoying these bite-size videos, and my favorites are from your Field Notes use and ideas! Prompts me to go and use mines :)
Thanks for watching!
Muy buenas e interesante
Gracias!
I have a Uni Mitsubishi desk sharpener that I use at home, but I also carry the KUM long point sharpener when I’m out and about. They give a very similar result, but the desk sharper is obviously quicker. When I was at art college they taught us how to sharpen with a knife, but nowadays I tend to sharpen my drawing pencils with the desk sharpener too, except for charcoal pencils.
I like the look of the Mitsubishi sharpener, very sleek. And I agree, I use pencils mainly for my art and sharpening them with a knife is more wasteful, requires skill and the end, in my opinion, doesn't justify the means.
@@karingrech3033 I can definitely recommend the Mitsubishi sharpener. I have the KH-20 version.
In case you aren’t aware, you can also buy replacement blades for the KUM sharpeners. From memory they come in a pack of three.
I bought a pack while the video was playing, because you inspired me to start a pocket note habit and now I would like to try Field Notes!
Nice! I hope you enjoy them and thanks for watching!
Thank you for the interesting video. At home I use Curl Angel 5 makes a nice and long concave corn. It can also be fixed to the table with a clamp. When outside, I use NJK No.531s. It is simple one-step sharpener but can make a long point.
Thanks for sharing! Hadn’t heard of the NJK no.531
@@BlankFirstPage NJK is a Japanese maker specializing in pencil sharpeners. Its blades are often used in other Japanese pocket pencil sharpeners.
Very informative video... if you do get a chance, please do try Apsara - a brand from India. Many people across the world like it... It should be quite cheap .. please do give it a try
Will do, thank you for the tip and thanks for watching!
i finished s3 of the bear before hopping on this video…so many points were made about clicky pens and i think i might start looking for THE clicky ballpoint and rollerball for me. i love this video so much 😊
Thank you for watching! Got to say - I’ve been using the pilot g7 since I made the video (almost finished one completely) and it is an excellent click pen! Definitely going to use them more
@@BlankFirstPage i’ve seen that recommended often for lefties as well so i might give it a try 👍🏼

What should we do with this information, stuff our bags full of notebooks?
Yes
i really want know whats these lil pen sydney is using
Me too
You touched on everything I've been thinking about lately
Thanks for watching!
It was really odd for me watching this video because you literally described my whole problematic relationship with notebooks. I ADORE notebooks and buying a new one always makes me feel happy and excited, but then the anxiety of ruining it kicks in and it's awful. I ripped off so many pages so many times because I didn't liked my handwriting or the content of the page itself, it's so frustrating. I will keep watching your videos, thank you so much for your help!
Thanks for watching!
Oh, I just found your answer below re: indexing (or rather, not indexing)! 🙂
No indexing for me - forced leafing through my notebooks as you described in your other comment! Thanks for watching!
It's very satisfying to watch you sort your notebooks! Other than the numbers on the covers, do you use any kind of indexing system to help you find data within? Or is the info on the pages not the type you would need to refer to once the book is complete and no longer carried? Most of my info is the latter, but every now and then I need some bit from a previous book, and finding it requires paging through all the books I think it's in. That's not unpleasant (in fact, it's usually fun), unless I'm in a hurry.
Thank you. Unfortunately, I cannot find Field Notes note books in South Africa. Thanks for the ideas.
Thanks for watching!
I really enjoy your videos, Lucas! Could you please do more notebook flip-throughs?
Thank you for watching! I can for sure - out of interest what about the flip through do you enjoy - just looking at the pages, hearing some background to the notes or both?
@@BlankFirstPage I enjoy both. I like looking at the pages with a bit of detail and hearing some commentary about them.
Thanks for the feedback. Will see if I can get a few of those out!
@@BlankFirstPage Thank you!
Wow, this man is handsome! And he's an avid user of fountain pens!! My intro to pilot was a clear Kakuno, followed by an Ivory Prera, then an orange Prera Iro-Ai,followed by 2 Pilot Penmanships, then 3 Prera Iro-Ais. They've replaced the Sailor Tuzu, although the 1851 Hongdian is becoming a favorite.
Thank you for the flattering comment! And thanks for watching!
How many of pages are in a pocket note books
48 in a field notes
when you get a hobby, you go deep
Correct
the caps of this reynolds pens are great to protect the tip of regular hexagonal pencils. Good to protect the tip of a 3/4 length pencil in a pocket (and also protect the pocket )
Great suggestion!
This is a great video, thanks for sharing it! I own two KUM wood sharpeners and are more like a classic kind of point shape they give. And Iike it very much, cuz that kind of points match my writing style.
Thanks for watching!
For my money, Alan Lakein's 1973 book, "How to Get Control of Your Time and Your Life", is far and away the best book on the subject, and all you need. David Allen's book, and indeed every book written after Lakein's, is in my view, an unnecessary restatement or overcomplication. The to-do list is central to it. To be fair, "Getting Things Done" is a clarification of some aspects of Lakein, but if you read the latter carefully, it really is all in there.
Thanks for the tip - I didn't know about Alan Lakein, but I have read David Allen's book. I'll check it out!
Lukas: I've watched this video at least three times now, but I've only just noticed your using a Parker Vector. I've tended to dismiss these pens, and I wonder if you'd comment on its writing performance.
Thanks for watching (multiple times)! Good eye. It's a pen I have from my secondary school days. Pretty sure it was quite cheap, I don't tend to use it much because it has quite a broad nib, but sometime I feel like a straightforward, simple fountain pen and it fills that role really well. It's a good quality, basic pen in my opinion.
@@BlankFirstPage Cheers.
Transit books can be found in the hands of or vest pocket of any land surveyor. I would love to see you go down that rabbit hole in an episode. Your Kokuyo should be a pleasure to use with a pencil.
Research to be done!
I may sound lame but I tried everything about sharpener but I always come back to a very basic maped sharpener that really does the job and it's just 20cents lol
That's the best!
As always, LOVE your content Lucas. In fact, I'm stealing one of your lines from this video for a poem "The sharpener is the garlic press of the stationery world". A quick glossary on the technical terms - the body of the pencil is called the shaft of the pencil and the wood between the shaft and the tip is called the collar. Hope this was useful :)
Thank you for watching, and glad my strange comparison gave you a good line for a poem! Thanks for the technical terms too!
Just learnt two technical terms 😍
I coveted that Caran d'Ache "Sharpening Machine" until I found out it leaves bite marks on the pencils! 😱 It's bad enough when a cheap sharpener does that, but such an expensive one, too! 😒
Agreed!
I don’t like electric sharpeners as I think they eat the pencils. I use a simple NJK 531s Long point sharpener. Stable point. Quick. Small. Comes with an extra blade. $6.95 usd.
Good value! Have got to check that one out, thanks for the tip.
I'm an artist. Sometimes I'll carve the wood of the pencil away and leave a really long graphite stick (2.5cm or more), this forces a person to use a light touch. I shape the graphite the way I want it either by scribbling on a piece of paper while rotating the pencil, or using sandpaper. One must be gentle. Never use a knife to shape your graphite. Another option is woodless graphite, though I haven't seen anyone actually write with that. Thanks for the video. It's always the highlight of my day when you post something.
Thank you for watching! I have seen a few artists do that with pencils and I have always wondered why, thanks for explaining!
I found a Carl CS-101 at a thrift store for 5$, its from the 70s, all metal construction and makes a beautiful, long, concave point that is just perfect. I also have the blackwing KUM 2-step at work which definitely makes a fine point, but not as nice and long and concave as the Carl. I ALSO recently got the Makers Cabinet Hovel as a gift, and like a blade it definitely takes some time to get used to, but I've found if done slowly I can get as nice of a point as any other method (plus its a beautiful object to have sitting on your desk, I love brass). The purposeful act of sharpening with it is also kind of calmly meditative if I'm not in a rush to just start writing again.
Nice an all metal construction desk sharpener! Buying one new now is an incredibly expensive affair. Have got to go to some thrift shops and hunt for sharpeners!
The Apsara Long Point pencil sharpeners are great and cheap. They usually come in a box of 20 and are an Indian brand. I got a box off Amazon to Australia for $15, so 75c per sharpener. I’d imagine they’re cheaper in euros.
Nice! Hadn't heard of this brand. Love a long point sharpener and sounds like great value!
You might want to look at Kum's Masterpiece two-stage sharpener. I used this for years, and while it does a great job for a few months, the sharpener itself stops working so well even if you change blades. This is inexplicable to me, but there we are. Most people love them. I've recently returned to boring old standard sharpeners, and lo and behold, I now feel they offer a much better writing point with a not much-more-frequent need for sharpening. And like you, I use good-to-great pencils: Mitsubishi 9800 at the lower end, Tombow Mono 100 at the higher end, and when I can afford it, the Blackwing 602. They've all been great with cheap Staedtler sharpeners.
I think the Kum Masterpiece is basically what they put into the Blackwing sharpeners. Same issue with it stopping to work inexplicably after a while. Good to know about the Staedtlers and the good pencls!
I use the Dahle 133, which is good. And sometimes I test small and simple sharpeners (made of brass or plastic), but the résult is often not very good. Thank you for the review of the Muji Sharpener, the result is perfect !
Never heard of the Dahle 133 - didn't come up when I was searching, thanks for the tip!
I sharpen my pencils with a Victorinox Cadet knife. My pencils are predominantly Swiss (Caran D'ache), so I find this a pretty harmonious combo. The essence of normal knife sharpening is not to cut off large pieces of wood, but to sharpen it gradually and very finely. Once practiced, it doesn't take you long to do this, while being quite a meditative process.
I agree. It is meditative, and you become very good at it after a while, as you do with anything.
I've got to practice more!
I use the OLFA 9mm SAC-1. its a retractable utility knife with the replaceable blades. i like it because it isnt a single use tool and its slender enough to fit in my pen cup on my desk. you're right about the learning curve on sharpening pencils with knives. my solution to that was to just go to the local office supply store and buy a pack of really cheap pencils to practice on.
Good idea with the cheap pencils. A nice meditative exercise too
