The frame expanding as it comes out of the vice and thus the fit being tighter, reminds me of heat expansion causing similar things. I have an airsoft 1911 and I 3D printed a bull style outer barrel for it because the factory one was drop in. I printed the barrel oversized and then spun it in drill while sending the front of it with sand paper. I went through multiple grids and at the end barrel fitted very well. But plastic expands quite a bit as temperature increases and as the barrel cooled down after the sending it became sloppy. So I learned to cool down parts before I test fit them.

Very adept, it's so easy to put a tiny gauge that you know most won't notice but it matters because you know it's there.

13:49 I don't have a lathe. What would be the best way to shorten a hood with that much excess material with hand tools? Does someone make a jig that I can use against vertical wet stone to keep the barrel hood length perfectly perpendicular to the barrel bore?

You messed up if you filed the hood after you cut the hood on the lathe , the hood was square why did you think the breechface is square , ending tolerance should be 2/10s of a thousands between breech and hood

There are a dearth of craftsman in the job market. Many places would do well to start an apprentice ship program. When I was young, car designers were famous. People knew their names. We need to celebrate craftsman in America again. Who redesigned the new GMC trucks? Couldn't tell you...random people at a design studio... When it comes to firearms, people like John Moses Browning, Eugene Stoner.Mikhail Kalashnikov... Why aren't people talking about the next guy yet? Where did these people go? I hear occasionally about John Kellgren, production issues being what they are, nobody seems to discuss innovative people, just brand names... it's sad.

This video glosses over a lot of history of the Custom 1911 and I don't blame you since so much of it is basically oral history and has been hijacked by the "defensive" buckos. The Custom 1911 basically starts with the Colt pre-war National Match 1911, which was essentially the closest thing Colt had to a factory custom item at the time and as its name would imply were intended to be used at the National Matches in Camp Perry, Ohio and for Bullseye competition/matches in general. "Pre-war" here refers to before the 2nd World War. After WW2, the US Army developed the post-war National Match 1911 where the Army Marksmanship Unit (AMU) and their smiths distilled the accurization process down to a science with what we would consider basically standard features on a custom 1911 today: hard fit NM barrels, NM bushings, fully hardened NM slides which had to be fit to the frames of GI 1911s. They also started to customize small features to suit the AMU team members, ie giving a choice of flat vs arched MSH, stippling or checkering front and rear backstrap, custom trigger reach, trigger shoes, overtravel stops, sear angles to achieve different trigger feels etc. The next major development would be sights; In the 50s and 60s it was not uncommon to see revolver sights from S&Ws and Colts put onto slides. These were never a great solution and had a habit of flying off. Also the staked on front sights had a habit of flying off with the number of rounds being put down range by serious competitors and were often silver soldered in place. By the late 50s, early versions of the ever popular Elliason/Bo-Mar sight would start to appear in addition to others like the Micro sight, etc. At first these would be slotted directly into GI dovetails with a matching high front sight but by the early-mid 1970s, the Bo-Mar sight cut had become a standard and the most popular version of the BoMar sight we all know of became extremely common not just at Camp Perry/Bullseye competition, but in other competitions that were popping up around this time (IDPA, Silhouette, 2nd Chance/Bowling Pin etc). Really the only feature we would consider standard on the modern custom 1911 that did NOT come from Bullseye is the beavertail grip safety/commander hammer combo. Basically everything else did, to include slide and frame mounted optics on pistols. The first year Camp Perry was won with a red dot sight was in 1981! There were also quite a few other smiths I think that should have been mentioned when discussing history to include people like RL Shockey, Bob Chow, and of course Jim Clark Sr. These smiths were all very active well before the 1970s and the rise of the modern "defensive" dogma. Anyways, thought I'd throw that info in, thanks for the videos I enjoy your channel.

What is most awesome about this video is that that is my gun. It is an absolutely incredible pistol. I have other custom 1911’s, but there is nothing like this one. It is magical. The accuracy (whether it’s the trigger or lockup or both) sets it apart from any other pistol I have ever fired. I have fired a lot of pistols and this one feels like it was made for my hand, well, actually it was.

If you’re doing any kind of precision grinding you never turn that wheel off until you’re done. If you do you have to redress the wheel every time. Nice work though.

Nice and concise but thorough, My shooting hand has certain areas covered in carbon, guess it blows out any opening. I certainly like the follower that is polymer, concave and anti-dip, I have some with flat metal with a bump right in the middle-makes it hard to unload them! also they have extra lip that 's supposed to make it anti-dip but doesn't.

I used to do this type of work, except on turbine fan blades. Now I'm disabled and can't do this type of work anymore and I just received a Springfield Loaded Operator Marine Corps. 45 that looks the way your gun looked at the beginning and it's making me insane because I can't afford to have someone else do it. Of all the guns they sell, why would they put out a Marine Corps-branded firearm that has such a horrible fit and finish. It's an insult to the Marine Corps, in my opinion. Damn, you really did a fantastic job on that gun though. I very much enjoyed this video.
