    Hi. I watched several of your videos now and it´s really cool how you are able to rebuild your locos with sound and some other specials - even in N scale. Unfortunately I´m completely untalented in electronics, so I thought about just buying a new engine with factory sound installed for my tiny N scale switching layout, but 250 Euros or even more is just to expensive for me at the moment. So I looked for options to install sound in my existing old Atlas GP38 (motorframe says 1997), hoping this would cost considerably less. I found out there is a drop in decoder with speaker by XL System Inc. for GP38 on ebay for around 63 USD which makes it around 90 Euros incl. shipping from USA to Germany. I understand the sound is rather mediocre, though (you get what you pay for). Then I saw there is the likely much better ESU 58751 for 90 Euros or more which is supposed to be for "older Atlas engines" but I understand you need to add the sound file yourself of course and for this you need another device which is another 130 Euros. So I guess my question is, is there any other way to easily add sound to my one and only American engine without high costs? Vielen Dank im Voraus und beste Grüße!

      The 58751 should indeed work with that type of frame. There is an overview on all the models of that type at www.spookshow.net/loco/atlasgp3840.html and as long as your frame looks like the 1997 frame in that article the decoder should fit. I have not used that type myself though. It might be tricky to find space for the speaker when using that kind of decoder, so using the loksound nano might still be the easiest way to make everything fit. I can't say anything to the XL systems decoder. I have not heard from that manufacturer before. Some dealers offer loading the sound file into the decoders as a service. Either for free or a very small fee. I think Fischer Modell does that. So buying a Lokprogrammer is not necessary. When I started with sound decoders I used that kind of services without issues.

    Ia there any way to find these lenses since Shapeways is no longer working?

    • @ModularRailroading
      @ModularRailroading 2 месяца назад

      Unfortunately not no. I have looked into alternatives, but the online services Ii found didn't offer the required print resolution. Resin 3D printers like the elegoo with transparent resin might be an alternative. I don't own one and I also don't have the 3D models. It looks like the demise of shapeways took out quite an important resource of the hobby.

      @@ModularRailroading There's someone on Thingiverse offering a free stl of lenses they've made. I think there may be an online 3D printer that could print out lenses in transparent resin which I've never heard of lol thanks.

      I bought a cheap soldering station a couple of years ago. The tip came with the station. It's not particularly small and has become a bit blunt over the years, so I think most pencil tip shaped solering tips should work well.

    Amazing skills and process! I started with FastTacks jigs but ended up making my own 3D printed jigs and tools. I'm EU and there can nearly be 100% added cost with shipping and import fees for their jigs. Forces you to be quicker and use less heat or the 3D printed jig melts...

    What are the CV's for the sound controls? I have this engine and I like the what you did to it.

    • @ModularRailroading
      @ModularRailroading 9 месяцев назад

      The ESU decoder are very powerful, but that comes with a high degree of complexity. Unfortunately there are a lot of CVs involved and programming the more complex features without the Lok Programmer isn't exactly fun. However, I have exported the full setup and removed most of the CVs with a 0 value. So if a CV is not listed below the value is 0. Yes, the variant with part number 58923 comes with the adapter board with all the wires attached. There's also the variant with part number 58925 with the E24 interface. I don't know that one, but it probably doesn't have any wires attached.

      The corner clamps were distributed by a German company called Faller. I just checked their website and it seems they don't carry it anymore. I also use similar clamps made by a company called Proses. Those are not seen through though.

    I'm curious, having tried both techniques, do you prefer pan pastels or oils with acrylics as in your earlier weathering video?

    • @ModularRailroading
      @ModularRailroading Год назад

      I think both are good choices for weathering. The main difference is that oil paints like to cling to crevices and pastel colors cling to raised details and edges. Oil paints also can give stronger and more detailed weathering effects more easily, while pastel colors tend to be more homogeneous. At the same time, pastel colors don't creep on surfaces, because they're powdered while oil paints do. I like to combine the methods and often start with oils for the fade, grime and rust effects and then use black pastel around the exhaust stacks and roof vents. Also burnt sienna pastel to rust up the hand rails a bit.

      @@ModularRailroading Thanks for suggesting these 8 months ago. I picked up something very similar not long after that. I've made a couple N scale turnouts trying like this but I wasn't really good at it yet. I've worked with the Fast Tracks fixture and I've gotten a lot better with everything, including soldering and testing, so I'm curious if I could go back and try it like this again and be better at it. It's funny, but I also ended up buying fixtures in HO scale and it's so much easier, of course being twice the size. I'll eventually go back to N scale and make some turnouts, but I wanted to finish some for my upcoming HO scale switching shelf layout. The N scale, if I have the room for it, will be much more involved, and I'm in no hurry with that.

    • @ModularRailroading
      @ModularRailroading Год назад

      Yes, those are 3 point gages made by micro engineering. They have an entire range for many combinations of track gauge and rail sizes. I know that modeltrainstuff.com carries them, but they should be available at a lot of other shops as well. These gages aren't super precise though, so you should double check with an NMRA gage.

      No, this is not a kit, but I've published all the information, including a parts list, on orvio.github.io/LNGateway/ I've used aisler.net to manufacture the PCB, because they are able to work directly with KiCad files. The project files, including the kicad_pcb file are available here: github.com/orvio/LNGateway/releases/tag/V2.1 There might be other similar services available for this in your area.
