I've never seen what I call the "tuning clockwork" covered before, so I thought I'd spend some time on it here. I hope that someone finds it useful. Some of the last video taken of my old buddies Buster and Fred, too. Cheers! Michael
FIXED! 1938 Zenith 9S262 Shutter Dial Tube Radio Part 5 of X Finishing Up Basic Chassis Work
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.4 года назад
I kind of messed up the editing, the first time I put this one up. I've fixed it now. There's a lot of detail, intended mostly for folks who are pretty new at this. Maybe the quality of this series won't quite be up to scratch, but my hope is that there will still be tidbits that you can use. THANKS FOR WATCHING!

We finally got around to getting under this thing. This one is not really too bad. Everything is easy to see and reach. We had to do some minor troubleshooting in.....Uh, just watch the video!

Let's get to work doing what we always do first - removing all of the stuff that we could break if we got clumsy. Since I'm clumsy by nature, I like to get all of the "Fragile Stuff" off of the chassis as soon as possible!

I have a radio similar to this one where the cabinet is the same general shape (although the speaker "grill" has vertical wood columns) and a dial similar to the 14wg 806a and I cant find much info on the internet.
Do you work on other peoples radios ?how would I contact you?
I just moved to Indiana recently and I was moved by your story about the coyote that came by your house to see you and your wife. It was touching to me and I think it is so incredible
Is it possible to open and clean the volume pots on these? Unlike other volume pot manufacturers like a Zenith I don't believe these have a slot to shoot cleaner into
I have a 15" face GE wall clock similar to this one and the set knob came right off of the adjustment rod with a left hand thread but mine looks like a flat aluminum disc with a knurled outer edge not crimped like the one on the clock in your video.
I hate when you find a channel like yours, informative, fun, and with an interesting topic, and find that it isn't in active status anymore. I saw that you had some personal trials and tribulations, and some health issues. I hope that everything is OK.
Thanks for the demo. My sister has this Model in her basement. Was my, born in Poland came to US in1904 grandfather's. Got it to hear shortwave skips from Poland, Russia and Europe cause of the Nazi invasion. Last time serviced 1960's tubes. Last time I heard it work 1973 when I lived with them going to college at St.Johns Queens.N.Y. Cabinet in good shape but very dirty ,light metal corrosion, no paper cone on speaker.Alnico ?No cloth front cover.I wouldn't dare pug it in without an expert look over. I'm a guitarist real tube amp guy so I know better. She might restore it someday.
And the volume won't go up for the turntable, just the radio, if you can help me please and thank you I'll be greatly appreciated over it
And it's d-10, yours is a d-10a
I have a 1946 Philco 46-1226, and I have a problem with my turntable it plays, but it's really low, and I got a new needle in it and it has a Shure crystal cartridge in it, so what would be the problem
Michael, I now know how much you are dealing with. I lost my son recently and the pain and void is unbearable. It is going to be a long time before I can bring myself to have any interest in my hobby. God bless and prayers.....Tony
I am working on restoring this model of radio. The leather piece around the dial and controls has warped with age. Does anyone know where I can find or have made a suitable replacement piece of leather?
Hi, I have a GW10 that I’m working on and can’t find the adapter for 45s. Do you have a model number or know where I can get one? Thanks!
I just acquired one of these today myself, I noticed that your unit (which I realize this is an older video) is missing the plastic cover that goes over the turntable mechanism and the metal grille above the front display has speakers in it. Mine unfortunately is missing the turntable platter and the cartridge for the tonearm, and the record pickup arm is seized up.
I’m finding that Tube Depot has old fashioned customer service that is rarely found anymore. . I like buying from them
I hate rubber insulated hookup wire. I find that the different colors exhibit different symptoms of deterioration. For instance, yellow may form 'rosary' beads, red may slit laterally and green may remain supple and okay. Must have something to do with the coloring agents/pigments used.
Renovated Radios LLC sells the tuner preset and tone control pull 'stops' and replacements for those horrible phenolic strips. They also sell repro label tabs.
Rather than screwdrivers, I use plastic automotive trimming tools to pry stuff off.
After working on a friend's Golf, I share your strong dislike of VW's. I call them Hitler's revenge. Never again for me, too.
Thanks for sharing. May God be with you.
Hello love these German radio's and I collect them. Please let me know if you sell some restored one's?
Wow it looks brand new. Very beautiful!.
Did you have to do anything with the rectifier? Thanks for your post.
Informative video, thanks for posting. I have a KS460U and your guidance was useful in removing the chassis. I'm scrapping the console due to space considerations and hope to house the chassis in a smaller cabinet. I'll use external speakers. Did you have to service the diode/rectifier arrangement on yours? I'm not even sure yet what type I have on my unit, but have read that it's a common problem with these Grundig sets.
I have an unrestored 41-280.
Oleic acid and naprha Is De ox##
I know it's been some time, hopefully things are improving for you. Happy New Year, we hope to see you back here soon...Tony
Change all for best sound for simple dollar
All I wish is for an involving Fast clean romantic tube sound . Good to best bass and clear strings
Are you still repairing Old tube radios? I have a 1930's airline HiFi I need fixed!
I didn't see any cute happy cats in this video! Great job.
Hello, and thank you for the Zenith 9s262 repair videos. I am repairing one myself, and need the tone and power on/off switches. Any chance you have any for sale? Or a source to obtain these 85 year old items, thanks, keep up your great work,! Bill
I am in Oregon.
I really appreciate you produce these videos, especially for this model I have the 41-280 and I just started the restoration in the past 3 weeks I've owned this unit since 1988 and have been dragging around my life and tending to restore it gathering parts along the way Several things you know kind of held me back and stumbling blocks but working through those I have extensive electronics knowledge but nothing from that error and I'm learning from you. Thank you for producing these videos, especially for this model
Thank you for helping me get the 1970’s ge tea kettle clock I bought my wife working. The telecron was seized and I got it spinning!
It is possible to simply add an extra dummy tube to drop the modern line voltage?
My sincere condolences. I just found your channel and you have a lot of great stuff here. I lost my wife, best friend and soulmate to leukemia. I know that five years have passed since you posted this and I hope you are getting through. 🙏
I just picked up the same console out of an auction unit, I would love to get it working. I can do the cabinet restoration but I know nothing about repairing old tube sets. I am in Bryant,Arkansas...any advice would be greatly appreciated
Thanks for the great video Michael... and thanks for the antenna info...I have one in the mail for my Grebe AH-1 which I just finished...
Unfortunately Made in USA sometimes means assembled in the USA from imported parts. Regardless I would and do buy Made in USA whenever possible.
I have a 41-280 picked from a curb in Dallas. It's missing the tubes.
Ohh!!! yeahh!!!!!!! Is beautiful!!!! I love My friend shango 066 has one of these too
I have an unrestored 41-280.

Well you could send the chrome knob for electro plating, if anyone in your area does this. As small as it is, shouldn't cost much.
I work with Zenith 1930 to 1940 radios, and if that was mine, I would go totally thur it doing everything you mentioned. The radio is worth it, and if redone, will bring pleasure for many years.
once on a X-ray service call I found the problem to be the 6-deck rotary switch for the exposure timer was missing the wiper on 1 deck, the contacts had sliced it in two from being operated thousands of times between 1938 to 1979 when I drew the short straw so to speak. Desperate I fabricated a wiper from the metal lid of a 'Buss' brand plastic fuse container and silver soldered it in place. It worked fine, and I figured it would last at least 6 weeks, and I should have a part within 30 days, so being over 500 miles from home, I drove home & ordered part the next day at the office, and carried on as a field service engineer. When part came in & hospital contacted they said to wait until it broke, then bring it & install it, they had paid for the part, so okay. We took that machine in when we installed a new system there in 1980, the old one was re-sold locally to a clinic, while I installed the new one, and I re-installed the old unit upon my return, placing the new deck switch still in the package in the bottom inside floor 'tray' of the x-ray control, I could always drop by and install it when the one I repaired finally failed. It was still there in 1989 which by then I was in another State as a Factory service representative, but later in 1992 met a veteran who had worked at a local (to there) clinic that bought it from the local clinic I had re-installed it in, and he said it still worked fine, and the new switch was still in the base of the machine behind the cover. This balances the universe where the brand new part that took 2 weeks to get overnight air freight again over 500 miles from home, up in the Ozark mountains, in winter, fails in 3 days.
Had a kile cabinet model aw Kent threw it out about 30yrs ago cabinet was destroyed in fire it worked well
I have a '47 A741 Philco. Still works after all these years. My 2012 Whirlpool Gold lasted 6 years.
