    Wow! What a transformation Michael, excellent work! It is a very beautiful radio and sounds awesome. I LOVE that arch dial design and your choice of grill cloth so compliments the overall design and color scheme. The color contrast between the knobs and the wood is very nice. Someone is a very lucky owner.

      You are very kind. I enjoy making the videos and I am glad that some of my RUclips friends actually find them useful and interesting. I am slowed down for the moment, but I will pick up the pace again in the next few months. Meanwhile, I'll put up as many of my video ramblings as I can. Take care, my friend. Michael

    Another great looking and sounding radio Michael, you’re sure doing something right! Good ol’ Fred, such an entertainer. Muffys fastest speed was when I opened a can of tuna fish. She almost literally appeared out of thin air!

      I give all of the cats a type of kitty treat that comes in a little plastic tub. All I have to do is pick up the tub, or even just open the cabinet where I store the tub, and all three of the Naughty Brothers come running immediately and at full speed. Tonight, I was offering up their evening treat. They all ran full-steam to get to me in the basement. I heard them all barreling down the stairs. Buster burst in through the cat door first. Then Freddy and Marty both squeezed through that cat door together. It looked so funny...sort of like tooth paste being squeezed out of the tube. It only slowed them down a little. I laughed my head off. Most of the time, cats are utterly predictable. We usually don't know why they do the things that they do. We just know that they'll do them! Take care, my friend. Michael

    A beautiful radio. I love the natural wood finish -- glad you didn't cover it up with toner.

    • @thattubesound2214
      @thattubesound2214  6 лет назад

      Funny you should mention that. In the end, I was glad that the wood refused to take the stain. I suppose that I could have worked it some more and succeeded in darkening it. But, after looking at it for a bit, I felt that the more "natural" color looked, well, more natural! Take care, my friend. Michael

    Watching you deal with those corner rubber feet made me wonder how hard it would be to make something like them out of hot glue or silicone caulking squeezed into some easy mold like a bottle cap. Seems like either material would be rubbery enough and insulate properly, plus you could insert any kind of metal insert into it before it cured. Great series, Michael!

      I don't dare post a vid without Fred and the other Naughty Brothers! I literally get scolded if I leave them out! I actually have far more footage of them than I could ever use. Wifey has commented often that the Naughty Brothers are the most photographed cats in the universe. I don't know about that, but they are certainly doing their best to do interesting stuff and I think that it's just so that they can show up on RUclips! Thank you for your kind words about the radio. I really look forward to your comments, every time I post. Take care, my friend. Michael

    Yeah, some times you get sidetracked, and then you get derailed!
    You can detect FM with a single diode. It's called 'slope detection', and requires that you tune the final IF transformer so it peaks at the edge of the signal. Now as the frequency deviation varies with the modulation the output of the single diode detector will follow the modulation. Not a very good FM detector, it's actually a half-wave version of a ratio detector or discriminator. If the BW of the IF transformer doesn't match the deviation you will get distortion. OTOH, there is a variant of this type of detector commonly used in TV set sound stages using a Pentode tube with a high mu suppressor grid having a tuned circuit connected to grid 3 (6HZ6, 6T10). The detector tube is functioning as a slope detector in the suppressor / plate circuit and a final IF/Limiter stage in the cathode, grid #1, and screen grid circuit.

    • @thattubesound2214
      @thattubesound2214  6 лет назад

      This is some cool stuff! I didn't know about slope detectors. I need to do some poking around to see what I can learn. If I am ever going to learn about televisions, I had better get pretty heavy in the FM department. Thank you for watching and for your always awesome comments! Take care. Michael

      Martin,
      I am a big, big fan of 6L6 tubes. I suppose that just about every tubehead is. I love the warmth, punch, and gentle coloring (digital people call it "distortion", but what do THEY know?) that the 6L6 delivers. Plus, for a little tube, the GTs still look pretty cool when they are operating. Thank you for watching and for taking some of your time to comment! Take care. Michael

    Sounds good, Looks good, Somewhere I seen some pictures of Armstrongs first experimental FM transmitter and it was located on one of the top floors of the newly constructed Empire State building of time just around 1938 0r 39 or so. I remember the pictures, it was all laid out on wide boards like Pine or Mahogany and whole assembly occupied one corner of the room up against the two adjoining walls, it was a low power transmitter maybe 50 to 100 watts I am guessing !!! I think this picture was in one of my old books on radio but I don't remember which one at this time !! Its too bad Sarnoff screwed Armstrong over on this so bad, like he did on so many other inventors of the time, Sarnoff was a real shrewd and crude operator !! ---------------------------- John Bellas ------- KC2UVN

      RCA got the FCC to switch the FM band up to 88-108 MHz because Armstrong operated on the low band (42-50 MHz).

    • @johnbellas490
      @johnbellas490 6 лет назад

      Yes I think that happened just after WW2 sometime, I happen to have 1 console radio and 1 tabletop radio made during the transition that you mentioned, as these two radios covered both the old FM band 42-50 MHz and the NEW band at that time of 88-108 MHz. I think that they were called "Transitional" radios at the time.

    • @1mctous
      @1mctous 6 лет назад

      Zenith, GE, Stromberg-Carlson, and Magnavox made these among others. They were among the few that actually licensed Armstrong's FM technology.

    • @thattubesound2214
      @thattubesound2214  6 лет назад +1

      Simply put, Armstrong was a genius - the real deal. Along with Farnsworth and a few others. Sarnoff might have been a great business man, but he had no soul. He was the kind of person who looked at everything he encountered through the profit lens. After all of Sarnoff's ruthlessness and tactics of personal destruction, where is the RCA empire, now?
      Much like DeForrest, Sarnoff spent a lifetime being driven by the desire to be known and remembered as the most important name in radio. In the end, many of us who think at all about the history of radio revere Armstrong and Farnsworth, while we deride Sarnoff and DeForrest! Funny how it all works out, huh?
      Thank you for watching the vids and for your always terrific comments. Take care, my friend. Michael

      Hey, George.
      Thank you for your kind words. I enjoyed this radio and I'm glad it came out ok. I wasn't so sure, when I realized that it was covered in contact paper! I have had the S7 for about two years. I had an S4 prior to that, and aside from the camera, I liked the 4 a lot better. Now, I almost never use the phone camera anyway, since it causes so many problems during video editing, so there is really no reason to like the blasted thing! I don't know what 'HTC' is, but I am pretty sure that it's better than the junk overrated phones that Samsung and Apple have been putting out. I'm seriously thinking about getting a Motorola for my next one. I'm not a phone nerd. I just want one that works the same every time. Thank you for watching and for commenting. I appreciate comments more than you might think. Take care, my friend. Michael

    • @GeorgeChristofi

      ThatTubeSound indeed. HTC are another far East manufacturer of phones. I have found that on the s7 the audio goes out of sync with the video. Not a problem for the sort of video where you are just describing something but if your face is in view it is so distracting. The worst of it is that it goes back in sync at random so you can't just adjust the speed by a fixed amount.
      Anyway... I could moan all day but it won't do anything except pass time.
      Take care and looking forward to the next project.

    Which 6L6 vacuum tube do you recommend for this radio as there are so many different types of 6L6 tubes? I think the schematic simply states a 6L6G for this radio, but not the shape of the tube.

    Westinghouse was one of the first manufacturers to contract with Sarkes Tarzian, who improved FM by leaps and bounds (and started right around that time frame); this may be a transitional design. Are the patents still listed?? Damn nice job, Michael! Edit: You've done this radio proud! My best to your wife. I've been battling cellulitis since early December, and it is far worse than MS is to deal with.

    • @thattubesound2214
      @thattubesound2214  6 лет назад

      I have always liked Westinghouse radios. There were some really nice Canadian models, as well as the great U.S.-made sets. I did not know about Tarzian. I'm going to have to do some net-snooping to learn more. Edwin Armstrong has been one of my heroes ever since I learned about him, shortly after I got involved in the radio hobby. Speaking as an engineer myself, he has always represented the best of American ingenuity and productivity. If I could be one-tenth of the engineer that Armstrong was, I'd be proud!
      Thank you for your kind words and for the thoughts of my wife. She is late in stage 4 cancer and is on hospice care, now. She's been my sweetheart for 23 years, and is truly the very best person that I ever knew. Needless to say, almost all of my energy is going to her care and comfort these days.
      After she is gone, I will be a complete mess for a long while and I'll need the photography and radio hobbies to keep me busy in order to hold on to sanity. My silly little videos posts will slow down and maybe even stop for a time, but I hope that my friends in RUclipsLand don't lose interest. I will eventually get back to it. Video editing takes so much time, that recently I have actually recorded four complete radio repair series that have yet to be posted. Perhaps I prep those and post them, as I take a break from the work, itself.
      You will be in my thoughts and prayers, as you deal with your own health struggles. I don't know anything about cellulitis, but I do know just a little about MS. I wish there was something that I could do or say to make it easier for you. It's not much to offer but at least, as the great Red Green says, "I'm pullin' for ya."
      Take care, my friend. Michael

      Michael, having ridden the rough road which I have for the last several years, the best piece of advice which I can offer, is that my many friends on RUclips have been a great part of my strength. I consider them an asset, to be relied upon for more than just electronics advice, I feel that most are true friends. Should you need to avail yourself of my shoulder, I'll be here, and I thank you for "pullin" for me, but please, "no duct tape" ;-) Tim

    Michael, regarding the slowing of your phone-I laughed when Trump said they were listening in on his campaign phone calls, and I laughed when people said Apple purposely slowed old devices to encourage people to buy new. I no longer laugh when I hear these things.
    Thanks for the video, I enjoy every one of them.

      Ian,
      Thank YOU for watching. I love your comments. You always have something interesting and off-the-beaten-track to say. I look for your comments every time I post a vid. The best cell phone that I have owned was a Motorola flip phone. It had a rubberized exterior, and it was built like a tank. Then again, it didn't really support the aftermarket gadget industry like delicate glass screens and fancy shiny cases do!
      I enjoyed working on this radio and making the series. I really like Westinghouse sets and I plan to do more of them on video as I begin to work on more of my own radios. I own a bunch of nice Westies, including several Canadian sets. I appreciate you sticking with my vids and I hope you bear with me as the posting rate stays slow, for a while. I will pick up the pace again after the dust settles in my life. Take care, my friend. Michael

      Michael,
      Old radio refurbishing (and RUclips) is a fun hobby, but there are a lot more important things in all our lives (at least I hope there are). Post and return whenever you feel like it and we'll still be here. You are both in my thoughts and prayers.
      Have you ever worked on a Transoceanic? I seem to have acquired two of them at could-not-refuse prices that need some work. At first I thought it might be a bit ambitious, because as I do have some knowledge, I am a beginner at working on old radio and tube equipment. Them I did some checking and found they really are just glorified AA5's with some coils added, not too complex at all. Plus they both have the elusive 1L6 tubes intact. I bought a isolation/variable transformer and I guess I will give it a shot.

    The radio is a really great treat! Such a nice job. A real beauty Micheal. I doubt it looked better new from the factory.
    On another note, "President Trump is enduring the most turbulent presidency ever" Blah, Blah, Blah" "don't they ever give up"?
    Interesting, as Donald said, I could shoot someone in the middle of 5th avenue and no one would care". My guess, he is right....sad.
    2weeks before the huge hickup on Wall Street, he claimed it was his existence as president that caused such unbounding wealth. I'm sure the hickup was due to Obama, or the investigation.
    No politics on this channel...but sooner or later we will hear tuned in Nixon speeches from
    Alpha Centauri ...
    Still another note....I truly hope your wife will soon recover. Medicine has finally achieved moderate credibility. Do not believe everything they say. Unlike politicians, they are human. They make a lot of mistakes. How many ? Well let me see..... they crispy fried my 2-1/2 year old brother in 1958 with X-rays (gamma rays) to treat ringworm of the scalp, lets not forget to give a rousing applause to the eyes open medical profession that for 25 years told my wife her gal bladder was bad, but the insurance company will not pay to remove it. Oh btw, after 25 years of attacks, they relented. Finally, after a major blood clot nearly killed her, the actual educated staff at Dartmouth found she has Stage IV Cirrhosis, in her liver, and she has possibly drank 12 wine coolers in all those years.
    It is called non-alcoholic Cirrhosis, unknown of until 10 years ago.... that is 2008.
    Her botched back surgery has left her all but bedridden since 2012. With the now oh so politically correct attitude of the medical community's attitude toward opioids, it nearly takes an FBI probe to allow her requirements for pain medication. The opioids may seem a problem, but living in pain is the passionate want of every elderly American apparently.
    In 2016, 480,000 people died from cigarette smoking related disease. An additional 19,000 from second hand smoke. 50,000 died from opioids. Alcohol ranked around 20,000. I can see the logic. While most people who smoke tobacco pose no threat to others... I definitely see why a mandatory crack down on people like my wife is well over due. Gangs of elderly citizens are taking over the streets we live in all over America.
    My sarcasm could never approach the intelligent logic that now permeates everyone from the White House to the OR and ERs in hospitals. Sorry, it may be utterly laser precise logic to some, but it is insanity to me.
    But in the hope that your wife makes improvement in her well being very soon,
    you and your wife must seek other opinions until it's healed. Doctors are trained like lawyers, they will never critique another physician, never. My wife awaits a liver transplant. Her doctor did not even know the protocol regarding her ability to be a universal recipient as her blood type is AB+.
    Good luck to your wife. I truly mean that.

    • @thattubesound2214
      @thattubesound2214  6 лет назад

      James,
      My mom died last year of non-alcoholic Cirrhosis of the liver. Sadly, my wife has stage 4 cancer and in on hospice care. My experience with physicians is wholly different from your, I think. Every person, from the nurses who tended her through her six major surgeries, to her oncologist, have been angels in my eyes. I feel fortunate in that the quality of the medical folks in the Salt Lake City area is excellent. My wife was already stage 4 when her cancers were first discovered, and the medical folks helped her to have nearly four years of good-quality life that she probably would not have had, but for their care. My insurance company (Cigna) was awesome to work with. Sure, they have some limitations that I had to deal with, but if you saw how much they actually paid, you would want to buy them all dinner to thank them! As for the cost of medicine, I don't blame the medical community in the U.S. nearly as much as I do the legal community and the willingness of narcissistic Americans to sue each other into bankruptcy.
      I know that my occasional politically oriented rant bugs some folks, here and there. I liken the channel and my work in the shop as a sort of gathering place where folks gather to chew the fat. Now, where I come from in the Midwestern United States, my friends and I would regularly gather at the Saturday morning diner and then at my buddy's farm. We'd talk, gripe, cheer, and yes, argue about EVERYTHING. No subject was off-limits. Everyone had his or her own opinion, and no one was shut down because he or she held a "politically incorrect" viewpoint.
      I happen to have an old-fashioned outlook on most, but not all, things. That sometimes riles my friends who reside to my left. I can't really help that. I occasionally perturb my more right-wing brethren with my views on certain things. ...can't help that, either. But at the gathering place, we get to talk about what ever is on our minds. Me, through the video ramblings, and my friends through their comments. That's why I have never, ever deleted, blocked, or otherwise tried to quiet the opinions of comment posters.
      All of the above is to say that, yep, we are here to talk radios. But, during the slow times, you'll have to forgive me if I rant a bit and if my rantings aren't the same as what yours might be. We are at the barn, and we all have our opinions. At the end of the day, we are all friends, too. Nothing can change that.
      Take care, my friend. Michael

    hi how's it hanging! Well you're right about slowing down your phone apple have been caught doing this not sure about Samsung tho! Have you downloaded any app before you started noticing the problem? that might be causing the problem. go into battery management and see what on battery saver something might be turned off in battery saver Just had a look at rubber door stops! could be used as feet maybe if you need it in the future. This company do variable sizes what look the same as the original feet you had in it's appearance, diameter 19 mm, height 8 mm, countersunk 7mm, screw hole diameter 3 mm, is the smallest screw hole diameter? About £1.04p each. With the counter sunk in the rubber stop would be better you could put a retaining washer if you know what that is! to hold the foot in place. They do various types of feet and sizes so if that one is not right or in the future you need a different size shouldn't be a problem. Here is the company they do a lot of sizes! www.vital-parts.co.uk/screw-on-bumpers-666-p.asp

      I'll check those stops out, John. I have have very few apps on my phone, and none that I have downloaded in the last 15 or 16 months. I'm not a phone nerd. I use them like screwdrivers. Grab it when I need it, but I'm not fascinated with it any other time. I cleared the cache several times. I've uninstalled all apps that were not absolutely essential (there were but a few). And I've loaded every single stupid update as they were pushed out (or should I say, shoved down my throat!). Nope, I am pretty sure that this is something that comes in on updates. Every time the stupid thing updates, it gets slower. I am rapidly approaching the time in which I will chuck the "smart" phone in favor of a simple flip that does texting. I have a million cameras around this place, and I don't like the cam in the phone, anyway. I have a tiny laptop that I take everywhere (11 inch), so I don't need the phone for internet. And, my car already has built-in GPS, so I don't need a phone for that, either. I am looking forward to taking the Crescent Hammer to it! Take care, John. Michael

      ThatTubeSound just go into battery in settings., and at the top the three dots in the right corner it should say battery optimisation, click on that and see if there's any apps that are not optimised? optimise them by clicking on the individual app. You're right it probably is a Google update but it might not be optimised? Is it just slow or is your battery getting drained? When you're in battery optimised and you're clicking on the app check it's permissions this can be turned off like camera doesn't need to have access to storage your contacts or camera, and you can disable a lot of apps like camera? Hopefully some help. Might want to try and change as well if that fails the standard Samsung interface launcher, by cleaning its cash and it's data usage that will wipe the home screen? You might like to try Nova Launcher instead.
      go into every app checking it's permissions turn all these features off if you need them it will flag up to allow access.
