The fact is people living in New Zealand are much happier and nicer than Canadians. You have mass drug use and people moving or wanting to move out of Canada in large numbers. Even the weather in New Zealand is way better than Canadian weather.

Would a WHV in Australia still interest you, given the window is closing? Or is it something you may have been interested in had you accomplished the NZ goal a little sooner? I did NZ at 22 and saved / planned to do WHV in Australia at 25 but ended up getting my dream job unexpectedly in Nova Scotia and ultimately ended up buying a house and planting some roots. I'm about the same age as yourself and can't see myself uprooting everything. A lot of people will never realize the difference in experience with long-term travel and a WHV. Both astronomically different experiences.

I was born in NZ but I have not been back for more than a decade and the depressing fact is that I cannot afford to buy a house in the country I was born in. The failure of every government for many years has ruined quality of life there, as they have in many western nations

As a Canadian (from Vancouver) who toured new zealand for 14 days, I would say north island to live, but south island to visit. There seems to be tons of angry, racist/xenophobic people in the south island. north island (people) is more like the new zealand i imagined.

I'm quite interested in this journey as I didn't know you could coastFIRE with that amount in savings. I'm currently 29 and have $330K in TFSA, RRSP and non-registered savings accounts. Based on that does that mean I could also coastFIRE, or are you a lot younger than me and therefore counting more compound interest on your $120K? As a born Kiwi, I can confirm a few things about NZ: although it didn't used to be, today cost of living is very high (groceries, electricity, rent, buying a house, petrol), although real estate cost lowers a lot the farther you are from main cities. Public hospitals are excellent for life-threatening emergency care, such as heart attack etc, but if your condition means you aren't going to die today, you could wait months, even years for treatment publicly. Yes the sun is fierce, you burn easily so cover up or become a pink lobster, and skin cancer is a big thing here, I can confirm this personally - wear a hat! I have never thought much of employers here in NZ, but hearing that in Canada you only get two weeks holiday and might get sacked for going on holiday, that is truly shocking! I still want to visit Canada one day, but as a tourist :-)

Have to wonder if all youse complainers are so unhappy, why do you still stay or live here. I get the feeling that if you all go back to where you came from, the average IQ in NZ would go up, quite considerably.,NZ has far fewer serious problems than almost anywhere else in the world. No race riots like in the UK or many Euro countries. One of the highest rates of home ownership. Check out Canada for instance, who would want to live there. I could go on... Didn't any of you whingers research NZ before you came here? No excuse in this world where research via the www is so simple.

NZ is the worst country in the developed world

So right about the driving - not sure where some people found their licenses maybe out of a lucky packet. Also so rude on the roads. Been here 25 years and things have changed a lot. Auckland is not the same place we first came to. Healthcare has gone down the tubes. If Immigration werent so arrogant and had thought ahead maybe we wouldnt have such a big shortage of healthcare professionals etc. Having said that, NZ has been good to me and I have no intention of leaving.

Normally I'm very bias when it comes to others talking about my home but, you are so right. Its not an easy task when there are only 5m people living here and 30+m in Canada however, previous and present Governments are all followers of other countries and tend to follow their lead in governing NZ. NZ could be a self dependent country however, in order to trade with overseas, we have to give something back in return. I hope you have found your happy place and hope that you will once again come back for another visit.
