I'm a journalist with a love for photography, videography, and animation.
On this channel, we take a look at digital cameras both old and new, digital devices, tutorials, and much more related to the art of visual storytelling.
Above all, I want to show the world that gear isn't nearly as important as fundamentals. Like I always say, it's the composer, not the instrument.
Thanks for viewing, and stay awhile :)

Camp snap vs Retro Snap? First impressions, hands-on, and comparison.
DISLCLAIMER:
I will do another review in the coming future with the Retro Snap upon request or interest level. This review is a long time coming; I wanted to release a video using this camera back when the new version of the Camp Snap was released, however my order was delayed by MONTHS, leading me to believe I was scammed. It arrived, however.
Now that I finally have it, here is my first impressions video! Lol. Thanks for viewing!

The Sony... DSLR?
Просмотров 888Месяц назад
I got out with the A700, a pivotal move in Sony's camera manufacturing. This was their first model that they built all by themselves, without any outside help. Furthermore, it is a DSLR! Not an SLT, or a mirrorless, but a traditional digital SLR! Thank you for viewing! mattsnotes thetantobykeith
How many megapixels do I ACTUALLY need?

This is my Canon D30. It's Canon's first digital flagship WITHOUT the help of any outside companies, so yes it's a full body Canon! It's funny to hear terms like "multi-megapixel" but it was a serious selling point back then. The D30 has obviously been out angled to today's standards, but it still has a very pleasing image, and it's a relatively easy camera to pick up today. Coming in today at ...

Many companies have shaped and molded the industry as we know it today, but one brand seemingly gets glossed over anytime we mention innovation, even today! This is the Panasonic GH1. It echoes all the features we've come to know and love about our current GH cameras, but in its own primitive way. It's far from a "usable" camera to today's standards, but in the right hands, it's a perfect camer...

I wanted to get out with this budget friendly full frame mirrorless! Some of yall might have this waiting under your xmas tree, bought it for a crazy black Friday or Prime day deal, or already have the camera but you're super GAS-ey lol. Either way, it's a workhorse. As stated, I bought mine used just shy of 500 dollars with a ton of extras! It'll serve predominantly as my "real estate" system,...

Well, it's the Light L16. An ambitious camera from the not so distant past. It could achieve images topping over 50 megapixels, and it does this in a unique way. The L16 has 16 different camera sensors! All of which use different focal lengths, apertures, and capture a singular image at the same time! Doing this allows for more detail, post focusing options when editing, and a very flexible fil...

There's TWO cameras I almost always blanket recommend to newbies, people looking to make their next step in their photographic journey, or those looking for a good all around camera. The 5d mark ii is all that! It's a cheap DSLR on the market today with a full frame sensor, 20 ish megapixels, weather-sealing, and a whole heritage of great lenses to tap into! I know I made a video on this camera...

This is the Canon G7. It's a 2 decade old CCD compact camera. It doesn't do one thing superior to a modern camera, and that is ok. It's not always about modern specs, nor about achieving a faux "filmic" look. Appreciate your gear for what it is, and not what it's not. Thanks all! mattsnotes thetantobykeith

Your gear is fine. Don't buy into the new gear hype and become a "buy hard." In direct contradiction to this statement, I took a broken Canon M3 and the Tartisan UFO lens while traveling around the states with me lol. To be fair, I grabbed it used and wanted to keep it within a $150 dollar budget. Coming in at $125, I think I did alright. Thanks for watching! mattsnotes instagram....

I thought this camera was stranger the more that I looked at it. At first, it seems as it's either a "dad" camcorder or an old Sony mirrorless. Crop Sensor DSLR cameras can be a perfect option for an A, B, or C camera for literally any photographer lol. We need to stop with the full frame and mirrorless push. How do you IMPROVE a MINIMAL camera?

I used the newest member in the Camp Snap family, the 103! It's improved all around, which I thought it hard to do seeing as it's a camera that's supposed to have nothing lol. It's quicker to snap shots, has cleaner images, and a features to make filing and workflow much quicker than before, allowing you to get out and snap pics! Thanks for the watch! PS: See ya later peanut, I miss ya lil man!...

I just bought a near mint D800 body in the original box with everything for £420 UK ($522) including shop warranty -- the shutter count was 7, 845! I've shot a couple of hundred test images now to make sure my lenses all work accurately when AF tuned on it. They do. 👍 Used D800 bodies are unfashionable now, significantly cheaper than D810 bodies, but still excellent for experienced DSLR shooters.
This Rajiv dude was a genius: the camera itself is like a gold mine - with patience you'll strike gold through a combintion of images stitched from multiple lenses
Impossible to watch videos on street photography and others without having to put up with tattooed forearms and hands .... absolutely disgusting 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
I like people who break the "rules.'"
Does yours got auto focus?
Mine does. Do you have a copy that isn't autofocusing?
Ok...Mines unfortunate the auto focus already failed 😔
Before it does
Still using A mount bodies and lenses, no rush to go E mount when Minolta and other A mount lenses are such great deals. Would love to have an A99 body.
The a99 is a solid camera too! I've seen a few going for $350 bucks!
What resolution setting did you use?
Great review !!! I've been on the fence between this camera and a Nikon D300. The Nikon has live view, but no image stabilization as does the Sony. I do have a whole pack of Konica AR mount lenses I'd like to use but both models require and adapter with extra glass for infinity focus that I am concerned about degradation of image quality. On the other hand I do own a whole assortment of Sony A mount lens from a Minolta film camera I have. So two questions... Which camera would you go with ? And do these adapters with infinity focus glass compromise image quality ? Thanks
The D300 is great too, but perhaps the Sony would be better suited for your current setup! Nikon glass and mounts are a bit confusing unless you're already in that lens universe lol. I wouldn't think the adapters would have a huge quality drop as some would make it seem, especially on these 12 megapixel sensors!
@@MattsNotes Thanks for answering my questions !!!!!
Just curious, what did you film this video on I love the look!
I shot this in 4:3 with my Gh5s, and Canon V10 (just cropped in with the v10 as it doesn't natively shopt in 4:3 lol)
ahahahaha lol, the cat meme 😆

I received my Retro Snap today. It's... Very, very bad.
I was surprised honestly! So much wasted potential
@MattsNotes totally agree. Today I asked for a refund (honestly, I'm not getting my hopes up about it). Some of the issues I have with it: - The snapface "cloth-like" surface is badly trimmed and sticks out of its plastic structure. - The filter button is skewed and accepts clicks around the plastic of the enclosure. - The shutter takes about half-a-second to actually take the picture. - The electronics are hit-or-miss in terms of connectivity. - The flash freezes its state when connecting to the computer (if its on, after I connect it via USB it stays on even when I slide the switch to the Off position.
Wow! a Golden Eye reference! LOL. I use to play that all the time.
The golden days friend! I've been nerding out on it again lol

Got one on the way!
Mirrorless suck.. It's not photography. Cheers! D.
Yep. I bought the 800E myself, (7100 shutter count, like new, 450.00) and I am thrilled. It is such a nice camera. Paired with the Tamron 24-70mm G2 (like new, 500 bux) and I want to tell you, this set is so nice its just unbelievable. Less than 1000 for the pair. For kick around, I have a pair of d90s, and a d7200. I use the d90s a lot more since I am out in the bushes a lot kicking around and for a 100 bux I am not too concerned about breaking one. I pair them with a D series AF 70-210mm, total investment under 200 bux.
An awesome nikon collection you have friend!
u wanna be a hater so bad
With simple and cheap digital cameras often a text-file (called 'date-time' or something like that) will be created on the memorycard. Dunno if this camera works the same? If it does: open the text via an appropriate programm, correct the date and approx time. Often the last letter will be a 'y' (of 'yes'). Change that to 'n' (of 'no'), insert the card back into the camera, power up the camera quicly so that it reads this text-file and the date-time stamp should be gone. As it stands, this Retrosnap has only its smaller size and the handy build-in filters going for it, imo. Colors look waaay off (weird/bad white balance) and exposure isn't anything to write home about either. BTW: when I looked up 'retro snap', I got to a website on which they tried to sell a miniature digicam that is available on Aliexpress for around $10-15.
Thanks for this info! The Retrosnap is very disappointing. The other Retrosnap was one I really didn't want to cover either, as I believe it's an ali express, or temu camera with a rebrand and upcharge. Maybe they're all drop shipped cameras or sorts!
The Canon 60D was my first "serious" DSLR I bought (before that I had Rebels which were/are still great but the 60D granted me that second control wheel and top info plate.) It was the first camera that I considered to be my "Workhorse" for Event photography. I've got one on order re-buying it after 10 years from when I sold my original one. Looking forward of re-uniting with it after a decade.
I love the entire 60,70,80d series! Such solid, no nonsense cameras. Happy shooting with that 60d friend!
I see one for cheap. Are battery replacements a problem. I think the digilux 2 and the x vario a were the most interesting
@@unbroken1010 batteries are pretty easy to find, especially if you don't mind the 3rd party options!
The Retrosnap always looked sus because the website was so well made without any info about whether it's out yet or reviews (because it wasn't out yet). There's also a completely different camera called retro snap that comes up when you search. The fact that they specifically advertised features people wished that camp snap had showed they were trying to compete and not just design something on their own. It felt not very genuine. But the worst part is, they have samples on their site and they look nothing at all like the results people are getting. Their photo samples actually look likethey were taken on camp snap.
That other retro snap is a sham company too I believe. All of these (aside from the camp snap lol) are essentially drop ship cameras, with shiny marketing, and a name badged on
Wow the retro snap looks bad
Well done. Thank you btw I have the Pro model with D780 and it works great. Love it
Love this camera! I shot a full documentary on it. For low light, Siriu makes some beautiful low light lenses and focus peaking helps the shallow depth of field, I’m able to shoot in the dark with little grain. The IBS makes it the best run and gun solo camera, never used a tripod with it ONCE.
Thanks for the video. I noticed your ultrasonic humidifier and as a camera/electronics "enthusiast" I suggest you to look at the Smartmi evaporative humidifier. I was having problems at home with all my cameras/lens/electronics being covered with a fine white dust, quite hard to remove. It took me a while and some research to find out that the white dust comes from the water of the humidifier. Evaporative humidifiers don't leave the white dust everywhere like ultrasonic humidifiers do. I am not getting paid by Smartmi by the way 😂 I am just thankful I found out about evaporative humidifiers.
If ya dropped an affiliate link, I would support ya haha. Funny enough, I was looking into another humidifier. I'll give that a look! My space gets incredibly dry in these frigid northland temperatures
I have two d 800s amazing camera , enjoyed your show ,
Thanks a ton! Great cameras indeed!
Digital just cannot emulate the film look camsnaps wants to achieve. And retrosnap is just a poor scam; the bad quality does not emulate the y2k digital look at all. Better off buying a 90s point and shoot with some 35mm film, or a 2000s nikon coolpix to get that y2k digital look.
Did you have the 1st or 2nd Camp Snap? I think the 2nd one improved (apparently). Especially on the time it takes for an exposure after pressing the button. Those are the biggest gripes I have with all those plastic digital cameras. Analog cameras simply shoot without delay.
Thanks for the comment! I am using the 2nd generation camp snap here. It is noticeably quicker than the first. It does have its own quirks however, like a weird green tint on its images lol. It's definitely not a film replacing camera, but the images can be fun!
Happy and prosperous 2025 Matt! I gotta admit the Retro snap was pretty underwhelming. You'd be better off paying 50 bucks for an old digicam or rubbing some Vaseline on your lens and applying a shitty Instagram filter to achieve the same look. But like you said there is a demopgraphic for that! Campsnap might be the better bang for the buck here. But I love these reviews even if they don't bode well for the camera - keeping it humorous and most of all honest.
Thanks for your support and here's to a great 2025!
Campsnap is miles better wow. The retrosnap reminds me of those $10 kids toy cameras off Amazon.
The retrosnap reminds me of those $10 kids toy cameras off Amazon wel that is because it is the same camera inside and I don't believe its even 8 mp it looks like 2 mp to be honest
It seam like arsenal helps you take lack luster photos and I certainly don’t need help with that. Every single one of your edited personal shots look 10 times better than the arsenal. Im struggling to find out what it even does.
It seam like arsenal helps you take lack luster photos and I certainly don’t need help with that. Every single one of your edited personal shots look 10 times better than the arsenal..
Some of the "time-lapse" like features are understandable if one has an old camera that doesn't have these features, but i feel like the arsenal is simply a glorified aperture priority mode generator lol
Why do people (not you) think awful quality = nostalgic and "retro" my god what is this. Great videos tho.
I agree! While I do appreciate an old and primitive digital, I'd never consider it to be "filmic" or "modern retro" lol
Happy 2025 Matt! Very interesting comparison video! The CampSnap looks so much better than the RetroSnap. RetroSnap looks nearly as bad ad my Kodak MC3 ( camera/video/mp3 player) I have a Kodak DC5000. 2.1mp and it blows away the RetroSnap. Thanks for sharing, hopefully you just got a lemon, but if not, I pray you get your money back.
That kodak sounds incredibly fun lol!
Huge quality dip on the retrosnap
Thanks for this review, I even have a 200mm telephoto attachment and a 20mm wide angle attachment! I haven't found anything else on the internet about either attachment lens. Anyway, I took fantastic photos with them in Canada!
Interesting attachments! I'm learning a ton through these comments of add-ons, and various fun versions of this old R1! I should also take this camera on a Canada road trip (i live close to the border lol)
Subbed for more photos of my home town. I miss Duluth SO MUCH.
Duluth misses you too, friend!
I have a Sony a290 in my collection which was one of Sony's last DSLRs (before moving to SLT) and also the last of the CCD APS-C sensors ever put into a consumer camera. While the a290 is the low end model (the a390 being the more prosumerish version) its still fun to take out as its such a simple camera it even makes my Canon Rebels look "advanced" by comparison. Plus you get the quirks of those CCD colors which can be fun to play with along with the Minolta lenses even if the dynamic range is a lot more limited.
That sounds like a very interesting camera! Maybe I'll try one out for the channel; lots of CCD lovers these days :B
Sony bought minolta, so it makes sense the early dslr's match. I started on a sony a200 and kind of wish I still had it. I have a sony a77 that I bought in 2012 and still use.
Both solid cameras! I bet you have some awesome A mount lenses!
Need to get me one of them vaporizers!
@@MattsNotes not as many as I once did. I have the beercan, the 50mm f1.7 and a 11-18mm tamron.
Could you do a video explaining what settings to use so I can send it to my daughter please. Because your images are coming out great….
Thank you for your comment! I haven't done a tutorial yet but I'd consider it in the soon future :) The BIGGEST things I'd recommend with using the Lola: 1. Shoot with the sun or light source BEHIND you, or off to the side. This would improve overall color quality of the image as the Lola doesn't do well "backlit" 2. Keep the horizon line as straight as a person can! Just to keep the composition of the image nice and tidy. 3. A good editing program always helps! Even just the free phone apps like photoshop on the app store, or lightroom are great choices. I hope this helps! I'll plan out some sort of video for cameras like this Lola!
Wonders of DSLR. Swapping lenses in such elements while not exposing the sensor. I do it much less now that I own a mirrorless camera. Used to be a daily occurrence when I still shot with D3200. With ice there's a saying over here, that if it carries the seagull, it will carry a fisherman.
I like that saying! I've fallen through frozen ice before so I get a little weary is all lol
@@MattsNotes Understandable. I'm generally worried of slipping and falling on my back during this season, as it almost happens twice or even more every winter. I don't want to even think of having some of my most beloved cameras in my backpack during such event.
Another older A mount Sony camera that you would enjoy is the SLT series. I shot an A65 professionally for many years with great results. Happy New Year!
Those a65 bodies are super affordable right now! Maybe I'll give one a go in the near future!
Hi Matt! Merry Christmas and Happy 2025! Excellent reviews and what a great camera, I only own a few Sony digicams, but that cam looks and produces great photos! Agree with you on using older cameras even for client work! I did it with a paid high school senior photos. Anything above 10 mpx is fine. Thanks so much for sharing your experiences and always great content. Stay warm! Own and use a few Pentax DSLRs as my main cameras! Was gifted a Ricoh GXR for Christmas, having fun with it!
I like your review of this camera. At the moment I have acquired two of them. One of the MkIV has to be repaired because of a cracked mirror. I removed all of the broken glass and cleaned the mirror box area, and everything works except focusing due to the mirror. I have ordered a complete mirror box to fix it. I have some experience doing this because I have repaired several of the EOS-1 film bodies. I am pretty comfortable tearing down and working on my own cameras. Once I fix the mirror box issue I will probably see if one of my photo club members would be interested in shooting with it. Even though I am getting older (I am old) and this camera is heavy, I love how it feels in my hands.
Thanks for your comment and keeping this beautiful DSLR alive with your repair skills! It's such a solid camera and I do understand your concerns of weight (it gets a bit heavy for me too, regardless of age lol)
All good points. But as discussed, finding one in good working condition is the other issue. I have dabbled with this camera and aslo the 5D MK 2 and Canon 6D which all had some issues, major or minor. I just find it hard to justify the purchase when a modern camera with 4K video and better AF can be purchased for perhaps $300 to $400 ?
Great points, Tim! I like to both use and prefer both, depending on what each person's needs are. In the case of the 7d, it's a very durable magnesium-alloy body with quick continuous shooting, and a cropped sensor, all within the EF mount heritage. That said, I'd recommend it for photo-centric (rather than those looking for modern video specs) shooters, that demand a tough body, and could work with crop sensors to their advantage (perhaps travelers or wildlife photographers who hang out in inclement conditions)! Sometimes these cheaper but more modern alternatives have plastic bodies or lack weather sealing needed. I suppose it's like either getting a new base model sedan, or buying a used car. All depends on the person! I do see your point! Thanks for your comment again, Timothy!
The difference between canon vs nikon in terms of the early days. Nikon came out with their first DSLR a 2.1mp D1. Which was a pro camera in terms of the body's build. The D30 was actually a prosumer camera by comparison, the 5D and 1D was still in development. Canon was also first to market with its own CMOS senors, while nikon was using a sony CCD.
Great points! Also worth noting for those looking to use these cameras today, is the Canon batteries seem to both last longer and have more aftermarket options than their Nikon counterparts
@MattsNotes I have batteries from 2004 that are still reliable. Started using them in my 20D, now 5D.
I have used the S3Pro as a Pro in my formel portrait studio. I had an Epson 9600 at that time. It was pretty difficult to get the right pictures out of this camera in the studio. The fuji software was terrible!! I started to use Photoshop for the Raw files. I only worked raw. Than it started to work. I made the pictured softer and with my Nikon F28-70mm 2.8 I founded the perfect combination. Of portraits I could easily make pictures of 1x1,5 meters. That’s large!! I also used this camera for wedding pictures. Same exceptional result. I worked mostly with measering light and color on a grey card. That’s the secret! I used it about 100-110.000 clicks. It needed 2 times a repair. The first time was easy. The second time it wasn’t anymore. Fuji moved the service for pro’s from the Benelux to England. That was the reason for quiting Fuji. My Nikons never had a problem, As studio camera perfect image quality but very slow. Outside way to slow. I kept changing batteries due to extreme size of the raw files. Working with jpeg is okay. I was not able to make these large prints anymore. For an amateur is this still a very good camera. As a pro I prefer the pro camera’s of Nikon. This was the compatator of the Nikon D2X and D200 that time.
Nice tree and merry Christmas 🎅
I have the Canon d60. It's fun to use. I pay more attention when I take photos (since it might be the last) and don't care that much for the outcome
I'd love to try out the D60! I was surprised at how clean the d30 images came out
This year I hit a personal new low.... 6.1 megapixel. Totally useful images! Thanks for sharing!
Nice! What camera is your 6.1 megapixel?
