My first digital camera. Such a great beast. The CCD sensor is awesome and the 10MP are still very very capable of larger prints. Upgraded to a D7100 in 2015 and it almost felt like a downgrade. Not picture-wise, but the plastic drove me kind of crazy. I’m a bit of a nice-build-quality-crack and so I sold my beloved D7100 for a D810. That was a giant upgrade, in every single way. But the most important thing on a camera is it’s glass mounted to it. I especially like the old AI-S lenses like then 105 2.5, as they fell almost sharper than my 70-200 2.8 or any N lens that is. And if you know how to manually focus, they’re dirt cheap for what they deliver.
Mate, I'm still using a D700 with an old 50mm D lend as my main rig and it takes photos in 2024 that are just as stunning as the photos it took in 2009. Up until a couple of months ago I was also using a Pentax K-r, a consumer grade rig that punched well above it's weight. I gifted the K-r to a friend who is just starting out in photography and he loves it as much as I did. I'm also still using an Olympus E300 with an old 8 meg kodak ccd sensor and the photos I get from it are beautiful. The megapixel wars are marketing brainworms for people who think expensive gear equals good shots. I love your content Matt, fight the power my friend.
Good to see someone with a Pentax and glad you gifted it on. I have a K-5 IIs and it's one of my all time favorite cameras. Pentax is by far the most underrated in the digital era.

I love my D800E ❤! I have mirrorless cameras and for some reason I prefer using my DSLR. It challenges me to do more like making sure my exposure is on point and I'm forced to look through the view finder not the screen! Shooting mirrorless is like a double edge sword, it is convenient for run and gun Shooting, but it makes you lazy in a way 😂. With my DSLR I have to check and touch buttons and expose correctly, and it just makes you work a little harder and I appreciate the images a little more!
I hear that haha. I don't know what it is but I feel the need to stay on manual with an old DSLR, whereas I just float between sub manual (aperture or shutter priority) modes on mirrorless lol
Hey! Just came across your channel, nice protest! hahahah anyway, I've started dslr photography quite recently, and I started with a mere Nikon D3300, and man, little playful camera, nice colors... I "mastered" the basics with this camera, and I was looking to upgrade to full frame and thinking to myself how much it would cost me. So... I took the shortest way and just ordered a second hand D800 for a bargain and really can't wait to have that bulky feel in my hands. I think your video confirmed me a few things, plus the fact that I agree that we are experiencing too much sharpness in photography that quite takes away that feeling photography would give us before, not that actual photography isn't enjoyable, but a bit of old gear in the right hands and videos like yours make the delights of thousands. Thanks 😉and btw, if you could give me a heads up on which lenses should I look for for a start. I've been shooting mostly with primes like 50mm and 35mm and have enjoyed. Would be much appreciated.
@omeuteacherdani I appreciate your comment! Firstly, that D3300 is amazing, and I'd keep it around (unless you had to trade up to get that d800, very understandable lol). Secondly, the D800 is a prime camera now, and for years to come! Dynamic range hasn't made a whole lot of progress over the years, and if you're simply into photography (not so much on the video side of things), MOST older dslr cameras would give you 95 percent of what you'd likely need. Last, do you have any lenses now? If so, what is their exact make and model? I'm asking just to see if I can save you some money on buying new glass (that's if these lenses you own are full frame already) Thanks again! -Matt
@@MattsNotes thanks for the reply. Yeah, I kept it around. My partner will use it while I move on with the D800. So far I own the 35mm DX, 50mm AF Nikkor, the AF-S Nikkor 55-200mm 1:4-5.6 ED VR First gen and the 18-55mm kit DX. So, yeah, no full frame lenses. I think. In any case I've been trying to figure what would be the best bang for the buck to start shooting right away without having to use it as a crop sensor with my actual lenses. And yess, I'm mostly into photography. Thanks again, Dani
My first big camera was Nikon D3200. I've since moved to Sony A6000, A7 II and whatever else in the middle that has just been for testing or playing around. Till this day I love Nikon colors straight out of the camera more. They rarely need any editing, aside from just exposure or whatever extra you might want to add to that. I still have the D3200 and I might take it out again very soon.
Nikon crop sensor camera have some AMAZING imaging. I'm using the d7000 again for my next week's video. I'm always off put by how nice the pictures are straight out of the camera with no editing! The D3200 is right in that same boat too. Nikon crop DSLRs are very affordable right now so I should circle back to em!
@@MattsNotes Oh I'd love to have a D7000 series camera down the line. Keep in mind that D3000 series can't autofocus with AF-D lenses and depending on age, compatibility can be more than spotty with AF-P as well. D3200 can't even manually focus with AF-P either, as the tech uses stepper motors, which sounds like mumbo jumbo to my Nikon.
Nice video, and I get it! I still have my Nikon d7500 and beloved d800E DSLRs and will not part with them! I also have the Sony A7C and A7RIV, all good cameras, but the d800E to me was the best value for the money. I love the d800E shooting landscape especially in high contrast scenes, which is why I still use it to this day, often puts the Sony to shame in its output.
This is still my best camera I owned as I just upgraded to this from D700 a few years ago. I still owned both of them and I owned many old AF lenses and Z7 is still too expensive for me so I don't really want to move up that way. When I look at my old pictures taken by D700 it's still look stunning.
I've also got those two cameras. Pro cameras built like tanks that take beautiful pictures in the right hands. The colour rendition in both cameras is very special. I find the D800 needs very little tweaking straight out of the camera Of course the corporation has to sell it's new wares. I've always said, refine your vision, refine your sight, up your technique and practice practice practice
I went the opposite direction recently - added a GFX100S medium format camera to the kit - i can’t see ever needing more than that at 102 megapixels for landscape, portrait, and my Fuji X-H2S for action and wildlife… my nikon D500 is pretty nice, and has its strengths still, also against the fuji X-H2S
I would be lying if I didn't envy your camera selection lol! I've been real close to buying each of your cameras within the last month haha. Thanks for your comment!
Your arguments seem very valid to me and in fact I don't want to know anything about the Z because the lenses are very expensive and the images I saw from those cameras seem somewhat artificial to me.
I still shoot with a D3 a few times a week, and thats 12mp good for 26" prints.. sure i have sony and canon mirrorless as well but the D3 is no sloutch..
To be honest, I'm also tired of the race for crystal-clear focus and megapixels. I sold my FUJI XT-4 and X-pro2, and my Ricoh GRIII has been sitting in a drawer unused. All these cameras took incredible photos. But for the past year and a half, I've been shooting with the Nikon D800 + 85mm, and despite its weight, size, and lack of stabilization... I just love it. I'll probably switch to a 50mm as a golden mean, but I'll still carry this amazing camera with me. One important point: when I walked with the Fuji on my shoulder and bumped it against a wall, I worried about the camera. But when I bump my Nikon D800 against a wall, I worry about the wall-wondering if it got damaged!
I used the d810 for a while for landscapes and it's awesome but I did get the Z7 eventually mainly because of the 24-200 lens, weight savings plus being able to adapt older lenses of different mounts onto it. I still prefer the d810 for the viewfinder, battery life and overall feel in the hand. I may even buy another one at some point.
great vid. I love how you are shooting for a more out of the box and unique presentation style. Too many Casey Neistat-esque low-fi music pumping in the background type vlog's out there. Not bashing it, it's not a bad thing if that's your thing but it's refreshing to see creators (like you)doing something different.
Awesome video!. I had my Nikon D810 for about 8 years and I have an itch deciding if I want to get a new Z mirrorless camera. but I have invested a lot of money on high end lenses already and I will not be gaining anything with a new system besides the new AF technology built into those cameras. I only shoot Portraits on location or in the studio and my D810 has always produce crisp sharp images. I think I will use it until it breaks.
I have both a D810 and a Z6 and cannot decide what camera I enjoy more. I keep telling myself to sell one and concentrate on the camera I could/should keep it until I can make that decision I’ll shoot with both👍
Gotta say, I enjoyed the 4:3. Sometimes I feel like I'm missing out on scenery when people film 16:9. I'm thinking about upgrading my old DX body and I'm between the 750 and 810.
I really like that D750! Although the D810 has a nice sensor, I've been considering the a D750 for real estate photography as the tilt screen and 24mp sensor seems perfect!
Just saw you video for the first time and I am looking t I buy an 800 series or a 850 buy wanted to ask you did you mention anythjng about the video from your 800e how is the video from that camera Thank Jim
Thanks for the question, Jim! The D850 edges out the D800 in video as it has 4k and slow motion options. The D800 is workable in my opinion; it has full HD and a mic jack. In short, the d850 could be a better option for video. The d800 is significantly more affordable however, and if you're working within the D850 budget, I'd almost rather just grab a D800, and a budget friendly camera with good video specs (like a used nikon z30 and nikon f to z adapter) then you'd benefit from multiple camera angles while likely still coming under the price of one d850 lol. I hope that helps!
Been thinking about the D800e as well. I liked minty cameras so it's still a bit expensive, roughly 600-700 dollars in Europe. They appear to be a bit rare as well (in comparison to D800s). The D800E also has the best shutter sound of all Nikon DSLRs imo! Used to have a Z7 too and liked it image quality wise. But in terms of fun, I dislike the Zs, even the ZF I currently own. The shutter sound is a big turn off. Just feels so dead, like those of Sony cameras. Hoping for a change in the Z6iii but I expect they recycle the shutter mechanism again. Luckily, I have got a D50, D200, D610 and a D5 to turn to when I want to enjoy shooting. ;-)
Even though D800E 'has the best shutter sound', the shutter mechanism is not as good as that of D810.. you can get blur picture when use slower shutter speed due to mirror movement inside d800e's shutter mechanism.
@@legionniy Very good point, I did not know that. I think I'd go the D800E regardless. Shutter shock is a problem with any camera above 24MP. Mirrorless is much better in this area, at least when there is ibis.
@otes It's solid. Depending on the nature of the subject matter, both my Sigma sd Quattro and my older Sigma SD1 Merrill can give the 51MP Canon 5DsR a run for its money with their respective 20MP and 15MP. At the current price point though, there is hardly more resolution for the dollar on the market than the 5DsR. And EF lenses are plenty and cheap. I can only highly recommend that setup.
Funny! "Gangrene and a frozen foot". I won't be getting rid of my Z7ii, but I am re-equipping my D5300. And most of my recent lens purchases have been used. I agree that it's getting ridiculous.
I've been planning a D5300 video for the spring. That's one of my favorite crop sensor cameras and I agree that it's underrated. Love the look of those images. That Z7ii is a beast of a camera for sure!
I had lumix gx85 but i put it on site for sale with 50mm Panasonic lens, but why? Because colors are never satisfied me, i feel like shooting Something unnatural. This feelings step by step grow inside me. And today i bought a nikon d200 like new, just 2500 shutter count. Like you, Megapixels, how high iso kamera have, how fast Processing is not in my interest at all anymore. Thanks for the video. 👏
I love that D200! I hear you there regarding that GX85. Although I've grown to love micro four thirds cameras, there was something about their 16mp sensor that I never enjoyed. Maybe I'll revisit that camera in the near future. Thanks for your comment!
Nowadays, you can buy F-mount superb 'like new' lenses for 1/3 to 1/4 of the price of new ones. I bought a Nikon D850 and 2 Sigma Art lenses 'like new' for less than 2000.
In the last 2 decades auto-focus, lens design, video & other things like IBIS have been constantly improving. But there is one thing that has been lacking that same speed of progress and that is the dynamic range of digital camera sensors. The dynamic range of the D800 is very competitive with the more modern mirrorless cameras that have come onto the market in the last 4 years, it's quite disappointing really when you think about it. If you don't need/do video you can pretty much save a ton of money and buy a much cheaper used DSLR & instead spend the difference on good glass.
I *just* ordered a D800 last night. I didn't get the E...and don't even know what that is compared to the straight up 800. But hey. :) And I >KNEW< it, about the 4:3 and everything else. I really like your points in here. I know this is six months ago. I'll have to see what's stuck and what hasn't. Finally, TLC jokes. Only a scrub would hate on you for that. (Also known as a busta...)
I don't think you'll notice a huge difference nor would one be better than the other! Both have their benefits so I'd honestly just pick up the cheaper one lol
@@MattsNotes best lens for dslr is the Sigma Art 40mm F1.4, it's unbeaten & only comparable to Zeiss Otus, for 1/5 the price. Google for test results, it's a beast. I made the mistake of selling it.
Seriously, you'd think that no professional could have ever taken a decent photograph before the days of autofocus and digital sensors. What nonsense, I'm not a professional but I can afford professional gear 3-5 years after it has been introduced and is being sold at bargain prices because everyone else is buying the latest piece of new technology. The same applies to lenses, I own some of the best glass Nikon ever made and I'll never go to the Z system for that reason alone. I'll happily snap away with my D810 and my D850, in a couple of years I might consider medium format when a Fujifilm GFX 100S II comes down in price.

Last,
do you have any lenses now? If so, what is their exact make and model? I'm asking just to see if I can save you some money on buying new glass (that's if these lenses you own are full frame already)
Thanks again!
Thanks again,
Dani
I have been rocking the D800 and Df for years and don’t see switching to Z mount for a while.
What a dynamic combo!
Two beautiful cameras
This is the first video of you that I see. In the meantime, I also checked your website. Nice work. Keep the old(er) cameras working! 🙂
I appreciate your support!
Sensor oil was only the D600 I own the D800 since 2013 June still happy with it every day .before that one I had the D200. apsc from 2007 August
Good choice. I did the same except to a D810.
I find the D800 needs very little tweaking straight out of the camera
Of course the corporation has to sell it's new wares.
I like your style Matt - I've subscribed. ps. I'm still a Nikon DSLR fan too.
I appreciate your support! Nikons color science is among my favorite!
good cinematography
I immediately liked the aspect ratio :D
I still shoot with a D3 a few times a week, and thats 12mp good for 26" prints.. sure i have sony and canon mirrorless as well but the D3 is no sloutch..
That D3 feels right in the hands! Very durable and consistent camera
I really really like your interest in old dslr, espacially on nikon's ones. Not too many people on youtube post content like this
Thanks for watching! Some camera age like fine wine. As much as I like new gear, "old" gear is where it's at 🙏
To be honest, I'm also tired of the race for crystal-clear focus and megapixels.
Agreed 100%!
@@glebshulife ha ha. Yes it's a beast
I appreciate the comment!
I think I will use it until it breaks.
im still using my d810 for landscape and d3 as well i have a z50 for casual photos
Great family of cameras indeed!
Mood is fire on this 🔥
I have both a D810 and a Z6 and cannot decide what camera I enjoy more. I keep telling myself to sell one and concentrate on the camera I could/should keep it until I can make that decision I’ll shoot with both👍
That's a great combo! That Z6 is still a great camera, especially if you need to dabble in video
I prefer D810
yes a good move - and why not also look Pentax K1 . killer camera
I've been daydreaming of the K1 all morning and saw this comment. It must mean something lol!
Just saw you video for the first time and I am looking t I buy an 800 series or a 850 buy wanted to ask you did you mention anythjng about the video from your 800e how is the video from that camera
Thank Jim
Thanks for the question, Jim!
The D850 edges out the D800 in video as it has 4k and slow motion options. The D800 is workable in my opinion; it has full HD and a mic jack.
In short, the d850 could be a better option for video. The d800 is significantly more affordable however, and if you're working within the D850 budget, I'd almost rather just grab a D800, and a budget friendly camera with good video specs (like a used nikon z30 and nikon f to z adapter) then you'd benefit from multiple camera angles while likely still coming under the price of one d850 lol.
I hope that helps!
I had 3200 than the d750 but now the d850 is a workhorse of all
All beautiful cameras indeed!
D800 for that price, yeah that’s a no-brainer
No Cap…thinking about selling my 1DXMKiii and picking up a D850 with a grip…😅
Not a bad choice at all, especially for more photography oriented shooting rather than video!
Luckily, I have got a D50, D200, D610 and a D5 to turn to when I want to enjoy shooting. ;-)
Thanks for this comment! Love that camera collection!
Legend. That creek scene... LOL
I think these high resolution DSLRs probably provide best value today. My choice in that category is Canon's 5DsR.
Those high megapixel canon DSLR cameras have always interested me! I bet the imaging is beyond immaculate!
D5300 is such a underrated apsc
I've been planning a D5300 video for the spring. That's one of my favorite crop sensor cameras and I agree that it's underrated. Love the look of those images. That Z7ii is a beast of a camera for sure!
I’m curious to know your thoughts on the Nikon D3s?
A tank of a camera! I'll pick one up as soon as I find one for a decent price!
Thanks for your comment!
also what's the track you used in this?
Absolutely well said 👏
I *just* ordered a D800 last night. I didn't get the E...and don't even know what that is compared to the straight up 800. But hey. :)
And I >KNEW< it, about the 4:3 and everything else. I really like your points in here. I know this is six months ago. I'll have to see what's stuck and what hasn't.
Finally, TLC jokes. Only a scrub would hate on you for that. (Also known as a busta...)
Oh. And then you mentioned the difference. I should've known.
I don't think you'll notice a huge difference nor would one be better than the other! Both have their benefits so I'd honestly just pick up the cheaper one lol
Great channel Matt sub’d
I appreciate the support!
this video is fucking sick. subbed.
subcribe for the 4x3 gang
Also don't wear crocs full stop 😂 💜
The crocs won't stop 🎵
I'm on D810 & D750

Google for test results, it's a beast.
I made the mistake of selling it.
Seriously, you'd think that no professional could have ever taken a decent photograph before the days of autofocus and digital sensors. What nonsense, I'm not a professional but I can afford professional gear 3-5 years after it has been introduced and is being sold at bargain prices because everyone else is buying the latest piece of new technology. The same applies to lenses, I own some of the best glass Nikon ever made and I'll never go to the Z system for that reason alone. I'll happily snap away with my D810 and my D850, in a couple of years I might consider medium format when a Fujifilm GFX 100S II comes down in price.
contrast on video -10. otherwise great!!
why the color and contrast less video? why not even less color and contrast?
so lame. get a d810 instead way newer tech
He sold his Z7 for a D800E? 😮 The Z7 is far better camera. This I can say a former owner of a D810.
No duh. He explained it in the video..
@@sk8termafia69 yes, duh. i may not agree with his choice, but those lenses are his preference. hell, i kept my 105mn f2 dc. for a certain look i will lease a d850 or d810.
I agree, but we are all different. I wasnt getting on with my old Nikon D7100. I bought a Fuji X-T20 for around £300 and instantly fell in love. Some get on with one camera, others another. Maybe it's ergonomics, colour science, weight, whatever. Just enjoy what you have.
@@rogerhampton2844 that 7200 didnt have a good focus array. nikon cheaped out on that. yes, the xt20 was the better option.
