Your set up is so realistic 🤩
trying to figure out how to comment on this 🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️…the facts are the facts 😊…
Looks like you figured it out!
That Motorman is very cool Paul, you must be enjoying switching while that shuttles back and forth all by itself?
I can't wait
Hi Paul & it's is Randy and i like yours video is Cool & Thanks Paul & Friends Randy
Thank you Randy!!
That is really cool
Thanks! Figured I’d try something different.
They look great
Thank you!
The impression that the hobby is getting older - even inasmuch as that may be supported by statistics - is a function of three things. Firstly, as you point out, the hobby is more and more expensive so it is older people who can afford it. Secondly, the older people are more visible in the era of social media, compared to 30 years ago when the age profile of the hobby was harder to judge. Thirdly, younger hobbyists have many other demands on their time so they give less time to model railroading and their infrequent engagement is reflected in the stats.
I didn’t say it’s getting older…the average age is just not getting younger. My sense from what data is available is that the average age has been in that late 50s-mid 60s for a very long time. Very good point about younger modelers not having as much time to show up in the stats. Doesn’t necessarily mean they’re not into the hobby. Just not on RUclips as much as old guys like me. Appreciate the comments and thanks for watching!
I think the flow of information in the hobby has its place in the lessons learned. Y'all that run these channels expose folks like me to all the different resources out there. Y'all also make it possible for folks like me who have limited resources to be able to spend the extra money on x, y, and z with confidence.
Thanks for the comments. Means a lot if we are helping you in the hobby! Thanks for watching.
@HartfordWhaler Thanks for taking the time to do what you do!
Interesting synopsis Paul...nothing to disagree with here. Over the years I've dabbled in a number of scales including N, HON30, ON30, HO and Lionel/o-gauge and have made a similar decision: Lionel is best under the Christmas tree and anything smaller than HO is either too small or too limited in availability to keep me happy. So the sweet spot for me is a "reasonably prototypical" shelf switcher in HO using DCC/Protothrottle. Boomer's videos are fun to watch but I'll never have his modelling skills so have learned to not take him too seriously LOL. I also have a number of Mindheim's books but found it's best just to skim them to glean some basic principles, then set them aside and go freelance. There's no perfect layout, it's just about having fun. Anyway, I just wanted to say that like your style and have learned a lot from you -- thanks!
Sounds like we are aligned. I loved my Lionel train layouts. Still have the trains packed away. And N was fun. But the sweet spot for all the new tech and options is definitely HO. That said, I understand why O gaugers love their hobby. For me Lionel are too expensive and take up way too much space. I’ll take em out if I’m ever blessed with grandkids! Thanks for the comments and for watching.
sounds like a swarm of mozzies on a summer night !!,,, speakin of summers nights -- Paul..on a hot summers night..would you offer your throat to the wolf with the red roses ???

@@HartfordWhaler u took the words rite outta my mouth !!!
Great explanation! Now I understand how those switches work. Just in time for the start of my shelf layout!
Thank you. Keep me posted on your shelf layout!
@HartfordWhaler will do!
Great video! That's a cool concept to use the Drone for footage to capture the layout. What kind of drone are you using?
Thanks. It’s a little mini mobius camera that I held in my hand. Added the drone sound track. Here’s a link to the camera. They make a few types. Good to put on the train for 1st person footage too… Black Box Mobius Pro Mini Action Cam (Ultra HD 2k+ 60FPS Version) - 1080P Full HD Mini Sports Action Dash Camera - DVR Video Recorder with WDR, Large FOV, FPV, Motion Detection & Time Lapse a.co/d/cMwmoYW
Great setup 👍👍😊😎
Thank you!
Nice tour and commentary. Your editing is getting better. Layout looks great. Of course, I always have constructive criticism. Is there any way we can lose the Homer bucket?
Ha! It’s still my garage Bill!
Ohh no a squealer!!! Put them on a toggle so you can turn them damn things off!!!! Hahaha! I do like them though.
Toggle ain’t a bad idea!
Haha they can get really annoying real quick. @HartfordWhaler
Very nice! Layout looks fantastic. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you John!
Neat way for a layout overview…dog, call him Buster 😊…layout looking fantastic Paul…
I like Buster! That’ll work. Thanks Anthony!
Beautiful layout. If this was an extension to my mainline i would make something similar, very inspiring and artistic. ☑️👍
Really appreciate that!
Briggsmore ..... Its a street name I remember when I was a kid in Modesto Ca.
Good name. My son lives in CA so could work.
@@HartfordWhaler My last name is Whitmore and the family next door to my grandfather was the Briggs ..... When the street was made they mixed the names together to form Briggsmore Ave. 👍
It sounds like its a view from a Bumble Bee!!!!! 🤣
It’s an actual drone recording. But yeah I had the same thought.
Fantastic .... I love your layout!!!! .... Hats Off 👍
Really appreciate that!
Seen your hand drone in the mirror lol
Yeah that’s the only challenge with a mirror!
Blue Hills Avenue? I dunno, just looking for a link to Hartford.
Blue Hills is definitely a Hartford street. Good one!
The layout looks good from any view!
Appreciate that!
Pretty cool! Does TRF trains sell those HO scale drones?! 😊
Possibly!
I really like it , a lot of nice detail, the CSX extension is great...!
Thanks a lot!
Love your layout Paul!!! Great details and real life scenes.
Thank you!
As Paul knows, I used the Trainz discount code last night, worked great, saved $10. Proto Missouri Pacific GP18 Low Nose, on Alco Trucks, inbound.
Main Rd
That’s a good one that can be in any city!
Yea they are. Haha we have one the city next to us has one to and when it comes into my town it changesto wheat rd. Haha!!! How has this been with you man? I love how much your channel has grow! And your selling merch!!! WHOOP WHOOOP!!! Where did you get the new Logo? I need a new one never liked it. Hahaha! @HartfordWhaler
I've got one, still in the box, and I'm not sure which frame it has. All I know is that it's too "modern" for 1942, but I had to have one having seen Sperry's rebuilt PCC street car unit running on the elevated subway tracks past my apartment while growing up.
If it’s the early version with the belt drive but it’s still in the box, it will run fine. And it looks cool. It becomes a challenge when you try to add DCC. Pretty fragile detail parts, so just be careful handling it.
A good "how-to" video. Tortoise switch machines are pretty much fool proof. There are a lot of videos on YT detailing their installation, if you search, should you want further info. Several points that I might add: 1) Once you've finalized the location of the Tortoise, a couple of strips of tape on either side of the actuator wire (parallel to the ties) will narrow the hole under the points and reduce the amount of ballast leaking through the hole. 2) The actuator wire is hardened spring wire, and requires hardened jaw wire cutters to cut the excess protruding above the ties. Trying to use regular rail nippers will leave a divot in the cutting edge of the nippers. So be careful about that. 3) One point you don't address is juicing your frogs. This might be addressed using the second set of single-pole contacts on the Tortoise. Juiced frogs prevent stalling on short wheelbase locos.
Excellent points Michael. Thank you for leaving them in the comments! I did have to use hardened nippers to cut the throw rod. Definitely don’t want to use rail cutters. Great idea with the tape to keep ballast from dropping through. In my situation, I glued shavings from homasote board to the edges of the opening. Same effect. You definitely can juice the frogs, but I solder power feeds to all my turnout rails and all my decoders have keep-alive capacitors, so fortunately I don’t need to wire the frogs. Great tip for most however. Thanks again!
Thx for the plug. I knew you would move everything to the new one.
Couldn’t do it without your initial wiring, programming, and expertise. Hoping this project allows me to eventually do my own DCC conversions (ambitious thought).
I JUST got one of these Sperry cars from a train show last weekend! I added a standard decoder and LED’s to mine; no sound. Still working on finishing it up! They’re a fun little unit! Thank you for sharing! Cheers!
They’re definitely fun and unique. Thanks to Don for the idea!
You're pretty creative with Michaels products! I love me some lights. The night setting on my phone works great for photos, but I'm struggling with videoing a lighted scene. Turns out grainy. Any ideas?
Not sure Bill. I’m growing tired with the oversold “quality” of iPhone cameras. Any inputs from viewers and subscribers would be great. Might be time for us to upgrade to proper cameras. Hope you’re well.
@@HartfordWhaler You're right - don't overpay for a phone. I use an outdated Samsung galaxy s10e phone for everything I do.
Love that hobo perspective!
Hobo shoestring God bless him
now that's really cool Paul. I love MOW operations
Thanks Todd!
New inspection car is a fantastic addition, and maybe that first, flimsy Sperry car might look good getting cutup for scrap somewhere on your layout. ;)
I thought of that :)
A nice installation. The dwarf signals really add some pizzaz!
Thank you Michael! Great to have signals.
Those lamp posts really look GREAT! Adding incidental area lighting will really add some pop to your layout. Fishing the wiring through the tubing and all is a real work of art. What size wire are you using?
Thanks! Not sure the wire size. It’s the real thing stuff that comes with the LEDs
Wow, using those brass craft parts is a great idea, those lamps look fantastic.
Thank you!
Good idea.. they look good..
Appreciate that!
Excellent video and layout paul, love the extension area!
Thank you! Appreciate the kind words.
Nice!
Best thing is, my phone did the editing on its own.
