Savage Sword of Conan #5 Review: The Return of the King
REVIEW: The year is almost over, and with it, the first five issues of the Savage Sword of Conan magazine, revived by Heroic Signatures and Titan Comics, naturally in black and white and on newspaper print. I have already discussed our thoughts on this run in detail in another video; you can find the link at the end of this video and in the description. However, this time we will focus on issue number 5. While issue #4 primarily aimed to introduce various characters from the Howardverse, such as Solomon Kane, Dark Agnes, and El Borak, and weave them into the Black Stone mythos, issue #5 brings Conan back to the forefront and in full force.

Why Warhammer fans should check out Conan

Both Conan the Barbarian and Warhammer share a grim, visceral approach to the fantasy genre, making Conan an essential experience for any Warhammer fan. Howard’s Conan stories are drenched in a world of raw violence, brutal survival, and dark magic, much like the grimdark universe of Warhammer, where brutality and corruption reign supreme. Both worlds explore the darker aspects of humanity: fro...

With the release of Titan Comics' first issue of the reimagining of Savage Sword of Conan, a strange controversy emerged in forums and social media comment sections regarding the use of dinosaurs as opponents of Conan in the Hyborian Age. Savage Sword of Conan #3 Review: Unexpectedly disappointing

In this review of Savage Sword of Conan #3, we dive into "Wolves of the Tundra." Despite Cary Nord's stunning illustrations, the excessive onomatopoeic words and lackluster storyline make this the weakest issue yet. Haven’t been a big fan of the art. Some of it has look like AI and it just looks off. Wish they would slow it down and focus more on quality.
Which art did you particularly dislike?
And this is why a proper Conan movie or TV show (maybe even a video game) today will simply not work. It is not possible to stay away from woke agendas and activism in any sort of media nowadays.
Good review 👍
Thanks brother!
Bruh, how is this not 1 million views and 500K likes? This is the kind of content people need to see.
thank you!
Haven't read anything yet, i m stuck with the originals which is one of my most favorite comics ever, i hope it lasts long, there are not many good sword and sorcery titles around
Are you planning on getting the TPBs?
@EternalCrusader-it1jn I have to get my hands on some issues to see how it goes, in any way I m glad Conan is back, even if its not good it might get better
@@dimifisher The monthly title has been nothing but awesome for us so far. Also check out our latest review for SSoC #5, it is waaaay more meaty and oldschool than the experimental stuff we had so far. ruclips.net/video/UEA4nu7mqYk/видео.html
So she will be black and lesbian and the show will all be about her and not Conan
Hey Brother, have you watched the video? None of this happened. We understand the sentiment, given the state of current day treatments of franchise, but for now, Conan is safe.
💪💀
I loved the artwork, it blew my mind when i was a kid. I don't like the way it goes after, cartoon like...Warcraft 2 is my favorite and the last game of Wizard that i played.
I never liked the idea that conans world was our worlds more ancient past. some thing very very Marvel comics about that premise. (No disrespect to Marvel and there Conan work.
At least it's more realistic compared to Tolkien's works. I like his legendarium, but I believe Howard's is more believable as an Antediluvian past
@@seanemery1917tolkien’s stuff isn’t supposed to be “believable” it’s a pseudo mythology.
@@samw6414 I know that
@@seanemery1917I prefer both stories compared to the idea pushed by academia that we all come from monkeys.
The idea that the Hyborean Age is a ‘forgotten age’ of our own world is not from Marvel, but from Howard tho. The Cimmerians are descendants of the Atlanteans and have basically evolved into the Gealic/Celts. What exactly bothers you about it?
Great review and very good points raised. I couldn't agree with you more concerning the reinterpreting/recontextualization of not just Conan stories, but stories in general. Let folks create in a world of fantasy. It's not like REH's work would disappear if a writer wants to write the Frost Giant's Brother! If Conan is gonna stay around, he is gonna need new ideas. And Jim Zub is walking the line amazingly with homage and freshness.
Thank you for your kind words and your opinion about adaptations. We share your sentiment as long as the take on the original is done in a respectful manner and not done out of spite or to - curses - subvert expectatios.
@@EternalCrusader-it1jn for sure! Even if the intention is to subvert expectations, as long as that subversion is used as a vehicle to communicate an idea or emotion I'm down. But if the subversion itself is the whole idea, then for sure, they can piss off with that mess!
@@2plus2isfive Agreed.
I for one was more than a little concerned by yet another adaptation of frost giants daughter. Like I loved the very from the text of ablaze comics. And the detal oriented or dark horse. But I really enjoyed this telling .... the lusty nature of it was a fantastic angel to take.
Yes, Zub handled that in a more gracious way than say the the raunchy adaptation from Ablaze.
@EternalCrusader-it1jn there's just a pinch of erotica in it any way you cut it.
I think my favorite remains the dark horse attempt
@@1000jjwalker Cary Nord and Busiek were a good match, agreed.
@@EternalCrusader-it1jn hard to argue with that talent
The logo needs to be changed. The first issue was way below average of SSoC v1. From your review in the vid I can see that the series is limping along and will not be attracting many new readers. I don't see it lasting more than another year...you can only lose so much money before you call it quits. A valiant effort but you have to make money and get better artists and even that might not work for a genre like Swords & Sorcery which is rather disdained now. 💀🗡
Last thing I heard the series is doing just fine in sales. But that doesn't mean it coulnd't be improved. Not having strong feelings about the logo, the one for the regular title is far worse.
i really dig these magazine sized books
We do too!
Deveriam usar papel offset de gramatura Alta e capa cartão
Loving that outro song, what is it?
Song we made with help of an AI Tool. Sadly we cannot sing :D
@@EternalCrusader-it1jn The song that starts at 4:06 Can you please post it? I think it sounds awesome and I'd love to hear the whole thing. Thanks.
@@FellVoice Its just that really. Only a few seconds. But maybe this is also to your liking: ruclips.net/video/0hb9R1cL8YE/видео.html
@@EternalCrusader-it1jn That's pretty good too! Is there any way that you could get the AI to either finish that song of re-enter the prompts that generated it and finish it perhaps? Thanks.
The original SSoC is my favorite comic of all time. This iteration is...just okay. Fine to read each month, but nothing compelling. For every good story, there's a so-so story; for every tale with excellent artwork, there's one that misses the mark. I do agree that the Solomon Kane stories have been consistently good, both story and art. Still, I'll stick with Titan. They're doing their best to take us back to the glory days of Conan comics. That alone is awesome. And that Rascally Roy and De La Torre strip is going to have Roy-Buscema vibes, I can feel it!
Patrick Zircher is the man. He writes and pencils Solomon Kane.
We're at EC are very hyped for Zirchers upcoming Kane comic.
I have no problems with the art or story telling, it's not all for me, but it's broadly enjoyable. I dislike the choices made concerning the paper and cover stock and the lack of consistency with the printing. I'd say the Savage Sword gets a 7/10 for me, while year one of the main series got a 9.5/10.
Yeah brother, that sounds reasonable to us. I would give SSoC currently a 7.5 actually, because the Tiery story aside, I really dug all the tales presented so far.
Let just say Titan Savage Sword of Conan is mix
Sadly yes. Room for improvement is there
The Titan Comics Conan series is not a part of my canon. It is poorly written, the art is sloppy and even the logo sucks.
The new Conan comic book series by Titan Comics is awful across the board. The writing is weak, the art is sloppy and even the logo looks amateur.
Wow 😮😳 thanks for your educational video I started reading James Rollin "ARKANGLE" so this is very enlightening !!
keep those trannies away from conan and delete this video
Everyone needs more REH
Easy to notice that warhammer took inspiration from many others Dune, Howard and many more. But i agree that rainbow and fluffy unicorn Fantasy is of little interest to the average Conan enthusiast
Honestly Game Workshop took a lot of IP from different setting from Fantasy and Sci-Fi I am sure they took some stuff from Robert E Howard as well.
The Ungol tribe lore, and some Norsca lore are lifted directly from Conan, a few names of chaos and undead characters have been lifted from Kull the Conqueror (such as Krell) and the Witch Hunters of Warhammer are based far more on Solomon Kane and Witchfinder General than historical inquisitions. The old Chaos Warrior and Chaos Knight models had some figures based on the Schwarzenegger movie and the Hero Quest chaos sorcerer model with a skull face is based off of Thusla Doom from the Kull books (not the film version)
@@podrekreinhard Yup
Conan 2019 before it was awesome too.
The best Solomon Kane comics is Darkhorse Castle of the Devil and Deaths Black riders. I bring out both trades near Halloween.
Intrigued about who or what is behind the black stone. Art is good. But usally Mish mash and time travel saves don't jive. They did it once already on CTB. Marvel did it to. Howard did it once. Serpent war is crap.
It's good. But not classic. If you can pick up the trade cheep do it.
Well fans were worried about Marvel's going to turn Conan not the same character we all knew and loved like they did with there are masculine characters from their comic books.
Good video. I hope your recovery goes well.
What is best in life? To defeat your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of the women!
I have mix feeling they killed off El Borak.
Yeah, that came quite unexpected. But this is comics, so I'm positive he'll be back. But kudos to Zub not being afraid of being cruel to the characters. That was quite the death scene, was it?
Love your channel man ❤
Thank you so much.
Great you are back!
Thanks man. Unfortunatly, I was in hospitalized.
@@EternalCrusader-it1jn Oh Crap! You OK?
Finally some content again!
Thank you. I was in hospital. Sometimes, life just happens I guess. Glad you're still with us.
My first roleplaying character was a Scarlet Crusader.
One of the most concise and excellent videos out there about this, thank you!
Solomon Kane is one of my favorite characters. He is , as George Clooney put it, a mean MotherF***ing Man Of God. And if you can't find the stories for free, Amazon has all of REHs stuff for real cheap. Like .99 cents for a collection.
So tired of AI crap reading.
100% agree!
Very cool
Solomon Kane, magic for the righteousness of god!
Nice video :) I honestly think one of the reasons she never reached the popularity of Conan and others is because of her origin. Or at least that's why I found her the least interesting of the women in this genre. Instead of actually gaining her abilities through work and learning like Conan and others, she's gifted by a goddess and has no real weakness associated with it, which I don't think works very well for protagonists in this genre. So her biggest strengths were red hair and hotness, not enough to sustain interest in the character. I also find Valeria and Beilit much more interesting characters, they are heroines who really deserved their position and status, including respect, it wasn't just given to them because something terrible happened to them. Just as she is a somewhat uninteresting female archetype today. An abused woman who thereby gains the strength to move in a man's world. Pretty lazy cliché and the origin just hasn't aged well enough and isn't going to win many new fans.
I don't know why... But this video was not just that... Maybe because of the hard times I'm going through but for sure it touched my heart... Thank you... It was not just lore for me or the history of a fictional faction... For me... This video was.. "keep on fighting" "never surrender" "till the end... March on!" I hope it gets more people that needs it... Ones again... Thank you
I really think their lore could have been handled a lot better
They were right. Just sad that their leader was also their enemy in disguise.
And why do we not know this from the movie?
I like the film. A bad lad, trying to do good, because otherwise, he's f'ed
