How Do We Survive Here??? | Rural Alaska
In my most recent video, where I went to the two stores in town and showed the prices on the groceries, I got a lot of comments asking how we survive out here with groceries being so expensive. In this video, I answered that question and talked a little bit about a few of the job opportunities that we have here in Gambell, Alaska.

Grocery Prices In An Isolated Alaskan Village - Gambell, AK
Просмотров 293 тыс.Месяц назад
In this video I give a tour of the two grocery stores that we have here in Gambell, Alaska. Showing you what groceries we have available in the stores and what the prices are. As you will see, the price of water at the stores is crazy expensive and the tap water at home doesn't taste great. At the end of the video, I show you where I get fresh spring water.
Ice Fishing on St. Lawrence Island, Alaska

In this video, I went out ice fishing with my younger cousin Tracy on one of the lagoon's on St. Lawrence Island. It was a cold couple of days on the ice but we had a lot of fun fishing for tom cods and smelts.
Camping on St. Lawrence Island (Subsistence Seal Hunt)
Просмотров 7 тыс.2 месяца назад
On this trip, we took the 4-wheelers down to Pugughileq. A camp site on the south side of St. Lawrence Island. There was a lot of snow on the trail so it was not the easiest of rides on the 4 wheelers. We had a successful weekend subsistence hunting for seals.

showing how you get water is so awesome!
That is very expensive. How much is the average wage in your town?
The beauty of SLI, thank you. Congrats on the seal!
I can't help but wonder: what do you guys do with the fossils you find?
ok I can't afford to live there!! Id be on a plane in a second. If I could afford it.
Geez, I spoke to soon. The condiment prices, the bread prices are crazy expensive. $14 for some orange juice. Those frozen Digorno Pizzas are $5.25 in Knoxville, Tn.
The prices are higher but not bad for the location.
Why isn't the Government subsidizing the food?
well.... considering the amount of shipping and labor it would cost to ship it all up there, its not as crazy expensive as I thought it would be.
Capri sun 1.99 at Walmart
Bananas .29 at my local quick trip gas station
So folks in Alaska are punished for living in Alaska. Alot if this stuff like frozen pizza you can get for $5 in ohio. Box of Cheerios are like $2 and some change. From the old store. The box milk youre paying for a quart is what a gallon of milk costs. And a gallon of water is $1 sone stores $2.
Just wondering, why the villagers in such small and isolated community, where imho your neighbor must be your best friend, why don't you guys join forces and build an indoor community green house, where you can grow must of the fruit and vegetables year long?????????????????????
I was watching another video the other day of someone that went to you neighbors in Savoonga and in that video the locals said they get most of their food from hunting and fishing. I was just curious what percentage of your towns food is hunted or foraged for? Your island looks absolutely beautiful by the way, seems like an awesome place to live.
12.99 for a jar of mayonnaise 😂 ik one state I ain’t ever moving to
Wow. I live on floating potato adrift in the ocean. Food is very hard to find here. 😢🌬️🌊🥔
Anything fresh food thats healthy just kills you 4 bucks for onion - willy 0
Holy fuck 4 bucks for bananas thats usually 90 cents down southern canada - willy 0
Notice how the milk can be warm it isnt even milk - willy 0
Absolutely no mercy the further north you go the colder it gets the hard goods are to transport and get there as well as harder to grow and raise cows so no milk besides lengthy transport northwest territory is the same - willy 0
what was the price of hamburger? I wanted to have a freak out when he showed that one.
Thanks for sharing. My sister is going there to teach grade 2 students in your school.
I was a little sad that you didn't give us the proper name of the thing where you didn't know its name in English.
I do this type of hunting in Saskatchewan (we don’t have seals). Do you have a problem with seals sinking before you can secure them? That’s our (me and buddy) biggest problem. Maybe I’ll try the harpoon trick since I have a few of them already.
Yes, some seals do sink right after being shot before we can retrieve them
I will never complain about our prices again.
Hundreds and thousands of years? You can just say thousands, the hundreds will be automatically included in that. Must have been even more incredible before they had outboard motors and firearms.
Do u have to have a state hunting liscense to harvest seals??
The only thing that looked about the same price as where I live was toilet paper but we stopped using it. We use a water sprayer instead.
At those prices, what are normal people eating? I think only the rich can afford those foods
Majority of our foods come from what we hunt, fish and gather!
Buy yourself a soda stream machine. I think it will be cheaper.
I do need to get one!
I hope you are successful with this, I have watched all of them so far. Interesting note, two of my sisters went to Multnomah and met their husbands there. You asked for questions, be careful what you ask for here goes: What are the tides like there? With a town so near sea level, what are the threats of Tsunami? Are there land mammals on the island, (Musk oxen, bears, etc.) or just sea mammals? Are these communities dry (alcohol free)? Are you able to sell the ivory or what is the point of collecting it? Where did the name Wallace come from, there must be a story behind it! That's a good start. From a fellow RUclipsr, I would encourage you to stay with it, you have a good idea, just keep producing good content, keep it engaging, and keep it moving right along and I think you will be successful.
I'm Canadian, and i know that remote communities in Northern Canada have higher food prices than we do in southern areas, but not as high as you're paying. And our dollar is worth less. I think someone is making a little too much money off of you.
Wow I would lose my mind if I didn’t have access to a large variety of produce. Always something in life to be thankful for
Greatings from Mexico. Great video, great content, keep up the amazing work!!!!
Thank you!
As a lifelong hunter in Texas I had always hoped of going to Alaska to fish and hunt. But, military service and then getting married and starting a family at a young age kind of solidified my priorities and they didn't include Alaska. Now with no family keeping me tied down and financially able to go there, my health abandons me. Oh well, I can still watch your videos and dream of what could've been.
Thanks for watching! And thanks for your service!
get ready folks. these will be the prices in the lower 48 soon
So basically a 100% to 120% mark up from what we pay in the Continental U.S. 😐
Big difference!
Is that harbor seal? What kind?
That was a spotted seal.
Why are you walking into the spring water with your boots on. Your boots are dirty. Think about it. It's not a good sense of hygiene. All types of animals have walked the same street your boots have.
That was a flowing stream and I was filling the pitcher upstream of where I was standing
no alcohol?
No alcohol. Gambell, and many other Alaskan villages are dry villages. Meaning alcohol is illegal.
I work for a produce company and we sell most/s lot of this. This is what is costs to live in Alaska!!!
Very insightful. Sorta makes me re-think the "high" food prices we have here in Ohio. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Darigold products hard to find here especially the eggnog the best I've tasted.
Those stores seem pretty well stocked for being out in the middle of no where. Assuming thats a dry community but im curious about alcohol prices in a town with similar logistics
Yes, Gambell is a dry village
They should start learn farming. Now they have access to knowledge. Stop overly dependent on the old ways without improvement.
I pay 59 cents a pound for bananas
make a video on food!
I’ve been crying about 8.00 a dozen eggs in Arizona, I m afraid to ask how much they cost there ?
Wallace, loved your video. We will be there in May for a birding trip and would like to meet you if possible
Thank you! I will be around in May and would like to meet you too! My dad, Rodney, goes bird watching with a few bird watchers when they’re in town so you might’ve met him.
Hi. Your videos are absolutely awesome. I'm native American myself. Navajo living on the reservation in NE Arizona. I started watching your channel yesterday ❤
Nice to meet you! Thanks for watching!
