@@sanchezic I do a bicarbonate wash, where my etn is dissolved in minimal amount of acetone then dumping it in around 1 litre, 5 percent bicarbonate. But I’ve noticed many more people using urea instead of bicarbonate now, Is there a reason? I think I saw something mentioned is SM but sadly I lost the thread.

Sodium bicarb is used to surface neutralize but urea is used during recrystallization to absorb the remaining acid so it can't recontaminate the etn.

It make potassiumhydrogensulfate and HNO3. potassiumsulfat alone works only if you destill it at higher temperature 150C. But than there are lots of NOX inside your nitric acid the KHSO4 destillation yields the good one. Thats why Woolwich arsenal hat 1910 around 150 tons of sodiumhydrogensulfate per week as an waste product thats the sold as draincleaner or recover H2SO4 from it.(Historical note)

I think if AN is used the temperature when is added to the Sulphuric acid won't increase unlike KNO3, cause AN has chilling properties when is mixed with water and S. Acid contains water

PETN is much stronger, it's a very neat energetic. You can make shock tube with it by blowing petn powder through a thin glue lined tube and letting it dry. The explosion is rapid but won't even pop the tube. It's a great way to set off multiple charges in quick sequences for demolition while avoiding the need for lots of blasting caps and wires. 👌

ANFO is a good price vs power explosive but if you set a 5 gallon bucket off you will get a loud bang and a mini mushroom cloud, do the same with PETN and there would be a large crater and bark would be ripped off trees at 30 meters. PETN's value is that it can form very directional shockwave fronts even in thin sheets or channels. This makes it great for setting off shaped charges or as detcord for shearing or shocktube for setting off multiple charges from a single initiation point. Mad fun stuff ❤
