Flying Kub
Великобритания
Добавлен 12 дек 2011
I am a microlight and paraglider pilot, that has been involved with aviation for a long time, both as an engineer and as pilot / crew.
You will see videos, as I hope you share in my journey with the Sherwood Kub SSDR, Fisher Youngster V build and occasional other odds and ends.
I am an ex F1 design engineer and RAF aircraft technician, I am still involved with some stress and aerodynamic design projects. I have had training and experience in classic boat and aircraft restoration.
I will try to produce a video once a week, these may be flying, building or engineering, depending on what I am doing. The video should be posted on Saturdays at 5:30PM UK time for flying videos and Wednesday at 6:30PM for build videos.

Looking great Algy. Well done with an important milestone!
Very interesting video. Love the speed that you work😁Great registration! Chris would have laughed at it. You already have the gloves, now all you need is a moustache to twirl!
@@helenbilbe2689 I am only prepared to go so far, I have the dog and medals 🏅
Drat, and double drat!😁
Great to see an update, Algy. The registration definitely seems to add an element of 'nearly there'. 🙂 Keep 'em coming as and when you can. Thanks for uploading. 👍
It adds element of get on with it 🙂 There are other finishing bits getting done, while I wait for a suitable couple of days to start the wing rigging.
@@flyingkub All exciting stuff, sir. Here's to the next installment. 👍
I know Eric struggled to get the pre-looped bungee on the nose wheel of the Zenair so yours didn’t look too bad. I thought Muttley as well when I saw it 😊
@@JodelFlyer these bungees will be easier to tune than the ones on the Kub which are prelooped and took 3 of use to change last time. Mutttley it is, I am now looking to do the nose art.
Why not Tent spring buckles instead of the bungees?
Bungee although shorter lived have the advantage of being self damped.
It's looking splendid Algy, your dedication to the project is inspiring 👍✌️💜😊✌️ Will you be catching pigeons? Because I've got a prrrmmmripupding device for that😉😀😀

Love the reg! So naturally, and hence forth, your aircraft will be known as Muttley !! So I guess that makes you Dick Dastardly? I can hear Muttley sniggering as I write this 😂😂😂
@@s1spittsdriver I can see his shoulders shacking up and as he laughs 😃
Wacky races and Catch the Pigeon were my favourite cartoons when I was growing up! I think you need to add a small facsimile of Muttley on the rudder now!
Well my dog looks a bit like Mutley but I agree for a bit of nose art or on the fin.
That was quite intense (but fun) music to go with the registration application timelapse. Do builders get to choose a registration or is one assigned at random? I imagine there is a "banned list" of four letter words for registrations.
@@Payne2view it is cheaper to have an in series (although you can chose from the next few and not just the next in line), registration like I did this time but you can for a bit of extra cash ask for one with specific letters like I did with the Kub and yes some are banned for obvious reasons 😉
Looking good Algy. The downside of G-INFO.
Yes G-INFO is not compliant with Data Protection not sure how they get away with it as a limited company!
Great to see an update on the Youngster. Hope you're well and keep em coming!

@@helenbilbe2689 worth visiting for sure.
If only they would let flexwings in, would love to go there.
@@frizzlefry5904 it is restricted due to planning, from what I gather, autogyros and twins can't o either. It is a shame how people can stop flying from an airfield that existed before they were born.
I shall put that airfield on my "Places Worth a Visit" list.
Worth while. They are struggling for funds due to having the road to them closed for the summer. Very interesting exibits.
Hey what is that part name called? Towing banner part? How it’s called?
It is known as a 'tow release'.
I had to look up that airfield. Interesting location. Was there a lot of condensation on the cameras, they just seem a little blurry?
It is an interesting airfield with Southend airspace just 1500ft over it. Yes, the humidity had managed to get inside the camera and even now having been put in a box with cilicagel it still is not clear, so I think thereis residueon the sensor or lens so it will probably be thrown.
Thanks for filming the landing and where would we be without a good pilot story! Shame that the weather put some people off but as you say, a great place to visit. Nice to see the Bobcat up close and I feature it in my video to follow at some point. :)
Thank you for the positive feedback. Sorry for holding you and John up, with the pack that gathered around it as we were settingup to go. She is currently off lineaswe have stripped it to the bare bones for inspection and to upgrade the skins and composites to production standards.
That was a good chance to give a longer test (and exhibit) of the Bobcat. Nice to see Tim making an appearance in your video too, albeit at a slight distance. Its a shame the weather wasn't better. I think I recognised an RE.8 and Albatross in the hangar.
We had flown it for long time but not had a nice trip out. Yes it was good to see Tim but I did not want to impose on his story telling too much. You are correct with your aircraft recognision. Will probably go again and might even pop in on Tim on the way.
An enjoyable watch and I learned a couple of things as usual. Thanks for uploading. 👍
@@clearprop no problem, I will try.
Nice to see the Kub getting some attention. I'm sure you'll have a clearer view now.
I can see clearly now the rain has gone, oh sorry, now the scratches have gone :-)
Interesting Algy. I noticed you use a metal holder for the silicone tube. I prefer a plastic one because as soon as you stop the flow from the tube stops. With a metal one there is usually a delay. Something my younger Brother taught me.
Not had any issues with my old metal one as I can press the lever at the back to reliease the piston, it is a bit of a case of what works for the operator :-)
Hi. Interesting to see the lifespan of material that has variation of temperature and vibration factors. Thin material is more susceptible to environmental factors, so seeing the transparent screen being replaced the way you did in this video is very helpful. Increasing your workshop to a higher temperature (this time of year - chilly outside) for assembly to minimise fracturing of the plexiglass, especially as the plexiglass is relevantly thin. Nice to see your modification, progressive step is a better term, to use silicone to bond the transparent and expandable film onto an aluminium frame. Rather clever as it will also reduce the vibration of plexiglass in a cold environment that can reduce the chance of fracture of plexiglass especially where it has been riveted.
All good observations PTG. I think it will imporve the view for the next 5 years. :-)
Hi Algy, did you use a Lexan equivalent? Did you find any material creep when applying the Rivets? It reminded me of making Skyranger doors, but they have a funny bow in the construction.
Simular but not as sensitive and the sealant is the non amonia type so it will not craze it either. No material creep with the soft aluminum rivets especially if you drill the holes to 3.5mm to give the shank some place to go.
👍👍👍
Thanks
I note you have been an RAF technician and a Formula One design engineer. A few videos on your previous engineering careers would be most welcome. I really enjoy your flight videos and all the engineering construction activities you undertake. Carry on the great work. Pete. (retired engineer).

Well I have been asked so often, I thought there would be a few who had not asked but wanted to know, what I did.
All good stuff.
Just a little video.
A bit random, but were you ever based at RAF Swanton Morley or RAF Wyton?
No I did fly gliders as a cadet from RAF Swanton Morley but as for being based there, no, nearest posting to them would have been either Marham or Coltishall. Just thought, if you were at RAF Swanton Morley you might have met me there as I was there regularly dealing with NDT and composite repair systems.
@@flyingkub I'm sure our paths have crossed. Did you have many dealings with the CSDE Tool Cell at Swanton Morley (and later Wyton), or an ex chief called Jim Wild?
@@combatwombat71 Mid to late 80's I did have some dealings with the Tool Cell when I did some work with the Victor Adit.
@@flyingkub I meant to mention - I did know one of the NDT guys at Swanton, as we were both involved with the model aircraft club. Steve (Cotter?) Surname might be wrong - long time ago! Also Ginge Reese big into the model flying but can't remember if he was NDT team or not.

Some nice clear directions for pilots. Hope that produces more visits for Northrepps.
I might get more people there but more better still they can find the place, these grass airstrips tend to vanish in the green fields that suround them and can be easy to miss without knowing the land marks.
Hi Algy. Whats the best way to store steel? I've just received some metre long, square, box section streel to use for the undercarriage of my project but it'll be a good while before I start cutting and preparing it. Best wsy to protect it from corrosion etc?
I wipe it over with a light oil, that will be easy to clean off and put it in a tube with silica gel but make sure it is not in contact with the steel. I then use brake cleaner to degrease it before use and then wire brush it or sand it to a bright finish before welding.
Thanks so much for that Algy. Had searched Bingelis but in vain!
@@nickbarsby3378 Glad I could help, I have kept steel like that for years.
