Rare thunderstorms over Redding Calif. 8 17 2024
A very rare (for August) low pressure in the Gulf of Alaska brought very turbulent weather near Redding and the nearby mountains...including severe thunderstorms in Oregon and Washington. Normally any rain in August comes from subtropical moisture streaming north, but this 1 in 25 yr. event was from an upper level low that formed over the GoA.

Custom Roofcam Demo

A demonstration of my new panning-capable roofcam. Here's the dawn sky from Cottonwood, Calif. The rig consists of an older Logitech C525 webcam mounted inside an hermetically sealed container that's mounted to a remote-controlled Sinso pan 'n tilt mount. Need to work on the white balance settings as the colors are not as accurate as I'd like.

A G5 solar storm, strongest since 2003, produced a magnificent once-in-a-lifetime view of the northern lights in northern Calif. The aurora started around 10:30 p.m. and lasted until at least 2 a.m. the next morning. Though the camera pics reveal more color than what I could see with the naked eye, it was still easy to see. All pics taken with SONY A7R camera pointing north towards Mt. Shasta.

A once in a lifetime opportunity to image comet 12P/Pons Brooks along with the Moon, the Pleiades star cluster, Uranus and Jupiter all in one frame. All images created using SONY A7Riii, 28-105mm OES lens, F4 at ISO 800-6400. Finals are stacked unguided 4 second exposures ranging from 3-20 frames. Note the high rate of star-link satellites that impacted most of my images.

Here's an ultra slow motion of a sequence of lightning strokes over Cottonwood, Calif. 3-23-2024 from a severe thunderstorm/convergence line that pummeled the area for nearly 5 hrs with hundreds of bolts. In real time, this discharge lasted only about a half-second. The video shows how lightning can occur as a flurry of strokes that are impossible to see with the naked eye.

Real time view of a very active nighttime thunderstorm over the northern Sacramento Valley. Flahes were around 2-3 seconds apart at the height of the storm.

A rare November thunderstorm erupted last evening near Cottonwood, Calif. The storm was a prodigious lightning producer as it matured directly overhead. This real-time clip is during the height of the storm with lightning occurring every couple of seconds as well as a steady, never ending drone of thunder...so be sure to crank up the volume while watching!

A very rare, summertime East Pacific storm hit NorCal which produced this amazing view of a storm cell that tracked over the East Cottonwood hills south of Redding, Calif. The first part of the video shows the cell initially producing a very rapid wind shift from South to West that occurred in a matter of seconds. Here's a sample of over 80 Perseid meteors as seen from Cottonwood, Calif. early in the morning of Aug. 13. The first two slides are of a brilliant fireball and a glowing after-tail that was visible for nearly 2 minutes. This meteor was so bright it hurt my eyes!
Lassen National Park 2 years after the Dixie Fire

The Dixie Fire, which burned nearly 1 million acres from Butte County all the way to Nevada, torched 69% of Lassen Volcanic National Park in August & Sept. of 2021. Here's a selection of pictures taken mostly along SR89 on July 27. 2023. The devastation in places has shown very little recovery in almost two years despite a wet and snowy Winter/Spring.

Under a very unusual easterly flow, this thunderstorm organized near sunset east of Redding and produced a major lightning display for almost two hours until well after dark over an approx. 20mi. area. All videos taken from my back deck in the hills east of Cottonwood. Many of the bolts were directly overhead spanned past the visible frame.

One of the more active thunderstorms in several years produced a great display of lightning. The storm was actually from two different cells that merged directly over my house where all these clips were taken.

What direction are we looking toward here?
View is looking NW from Cottonwood towards the towns of Anderson and Redding. This particular area is notorious for developing convective convergence lines,, which this video captures.
