"You Do Something to Me," Cole Porter 1929 Broadway hit Fifty Million Frenchmen, PUBLIC DOMAIN DAY
You Do Something To Me, from the 1929 Broadway hit musical, Fifty Million Frenchmen, with music and lyrics by Cole Porter. Porter, drawing on his own experiences living in Paris, wrote a musical about American tourists visiting Paris and the confused hijinks that ensue when American millionaire Peter Forbes bets his friends that--even without his money--he can make the girl he loves (Looloo Carroll, a tourist from the American Midwest) fall in love with him. "You Do Something To Me" is the big ballad for Peter and Looloo, who were originally played on Broadway by by William Gaxton and Genevieve Tobin.

"Christmas Time Seems Years and Years Away," Irving Berlin & Ted Snyder, 1909 Tin Pan Alley song
Просмотров 23114 дней назад
1909 Christmas holiday song by Irving Berlin and Ted Snyder. Irving Berlin is best known as the composer of the 1942 Christmas classic White Christmas, but here, at age 21, he is merely working as a lyricist, teaming with 28-year-old composer Ted Snyder, a more established composer with his own publishing house. Snyder had hired Berlin as a staff writer. Berlin first drew notice as a lyricist a...
"Why Doesn't Santa Claus Go Next Door?" Christmas 1908 Tin Pan Alley song waltz, Albert Von Tilzer
Просмотров 18321 день назад
Christmas rarity of the early 20th century by the Albert Von Tilzer, the composer of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame." An unusual (but strikingly valid) look at Santa Claus from the eyes of an innocent, kind-hearted little girl concerned about her little friend's well-being. Musically, it presents a verse in 2 and then a waltz chorus, much like the waltzes common to the late 19th and early 20th ce...

Roaring 20's prohibition song with by Irving Berlin, great American composer-lyricist, with a Latin rhythm! Berlin, who immigrated to the U.S. as a small child with his Russian-Jewish family, grew up roaming the streets of New York City and left home to become a singing waiter at a New York restaurant by his early teens. Premiered in summer 1927 in Paris at the Ambassadors Cafe by Irving Aaronson and his Commanders. Porter intended for "Let's Misbehave" to be featured in the Broadway musical Paris and sung by wide-eyed Parisian singer Irene Bordoni, but the song was replaced by "Let's Do It (Let's Fall In Love)" prior to the Broadway opening. The two songs are clearly on the same theme with the same inspiration...

Roaring 20's crazy hit! "If You Knew Susie (Like I Knew Susie)," is most closely associated with Eddie Cantor, one of the biggest Vaudeville, Broadway, and film stars of the era. Nostalgic American waltz of the late 1890s! "You Tell Me Your Dream" is a bittersweet love song, with music by Charles N. Daniels and lyric by Seymour Rice and Albert H. Brown. Popular love songs of the late 1800s were typically waltzes, and the verses tell a story, while the chorus is the same each time with a lyric of broad appeal (so audiences would remember the chorus!). Lots of good stuff goes into the public domain today, including the novel The Maltese Falcon, the first Marx Brothers feature film, and the song SIngin' in the Rain. I wasn't aware of the Anything Goes version with Frank Sinatra and Ethel Merman. I look forward to checking it out. There may be a perfectly reasonable explaination why the neighbours don't celebrate Christmas; Maybe they prefer Menorahs over trees, or maybe Christmass falls right in the middle of Ramadan. Or the girl 'll have it all by Chinese, or Russian New Years'.

It's true some neighbors may celebrate different holidays, and we should all treat each other with respect! In this song specifically, we learn in verse 2 that the neighbor girl too is looking forward to Christmas and Santa and has hung her stocking. So, this song seems to be about 2 families that recognize Christmas, but only one has the means to celebrate.

I think it is somewhat obscure, probably because it ceased to be topical when Prohibition ended, and then after the Cuban revolution, it didn't even make for good nostalgia. I hope everything is far enough in the past for us to enjoy it just as a historical treat!

Charming performance of a very Cole Porter song! I agree with @stevecob about your detailed comments. I've heard this song plenty yet hadn't realized it was cut before opening from the show for which it was written. Elvis Costello's version on the De-Lovely soundtrack is fun. Have you seen the movie? What about Night and Day, the earlier Cole Porter biopic (with many liberties taken, as expected in 1946)? I wonder what the book of the original Anything Goes was like. I'm sure Ethel Merman was great in the original production! Thanks again for the video. -- Steve

Thanks, Steve! I must admit I haven't seen De-Lovely or Night and Day, but I should! I have seen the 1936 movie version of Anything Goes, which isn't bad and does include Merman! I have seen a libretto dated 1936 from Samuel French London. I imagine it can't be too far from the 1934 Broadway version, and it was pretty entertaining. Shipboard fun as always!

@@sheetmusiclady2924 I enjoyed those movies, as well as late-1940s movies Words and Music (about Rodgers and Hart) and Till the Clouds Roll By (about Jerome Kern). Don't expect the plots to be anywhere close to the truth, but enjoy the songs and musical performances. Thank you for spending so much time making music for others to enjoy.

You're welcome, Steven! I just posted a song (I'll See You in C-U-B-A") by Irving Berlin. I hope you enjoy it!

Another great performance! And one note - I really appreciate your detailed comments. I used to sell coin piano rolls on ebay and always tried to include some background on the music as well as some (hopefully) interesting colorful commentary to try to set the tone to the appropriate year when the music was most popular. I don't know if I sold any more piano rolls because of that, and it was fun to write but quite time consuming, so thank you for your time and effort to create such polished and entertaining videos, AND interesting and educational 'liner notes'.

Thank you! I agree that the notes can help listeners appreciate the music because they know the historical context! Plus, I think having a good description makes a video more likely to show up in someone's search results!
