    Oh, I'm old enough to remember how the sun went dark, the seas dried up, entire peoples were exterminated, when HB Music Engraver went belly up. My publisher called one day and asked for some revisions to a couple of pieces I'd done with HB Music Engraver. I told him, that the program no longer exists and I don't have a computer anymore that will run it. He replied. "Ok". I imagine similar conversations took place, for example at Henle Verlag, when Leland Smith died, which effectively also killed his SCORE program, which was the real "industry leader" until it's demise in 2013. Well, having learned from those two world wide calamities, I've got a 2015 MacBook Air with Finale installed. It runs like a charm. Just as well as my 2012 data/multimedia MacMini Server. Finale's v.25 runs more stably on that Air than it does on either of my M2 MacBook Airs, which, as in the old Finale days, tends to want to crash every 10 key strokes or 3 input pages, whichever is more painful. But just because Finale has worked out with another company how (and how much) to pull just one last time, money from my wallet, doesn't mean I'm going to blindly sheeple along and give them my CC number. I might just pull an Alain Delon and when I die, demand that my 2015 MacBook Air together with Finale be buried with me when I die at age 107 in 2057. Of course, being that those old Intel machines seem indestructible, I have no idea how they'll put it to sleep forever before chucking it into the casket with me. It still wakes up to this day sponanteously and performs an automated backup to my server.

    Every pro scoring app shares one thing: They're all caught up in a battle to have the most features adjacent to music scoring, e.g., the best audio play back. I wish one of them would focus _all_ its devs on the core scoring tasks: a) Making the input of all the common kinds music (classical/pop/jazz) as intuitive & gestural as possible, and b) making appearance and layout (for both scores _and_ lead sheets, etc.) as customizable as humanly possible. I personally find chord symbols to be a weak spot for most of these programs; I've often struggled to easily get complex chords to look right for my needs & for my target players.

Here's a link to what I could find to some updates Sibelius has had recently: resources.avid.com/SupportFiles/Sibelius/2024.6/Whats_New_in_Sibelius.pdf It really isn't too much, but it's enough to keep Sibelius functionable in future operating systems!

    I used to use Personal Composer before they discontinued. I refused to use any other program after that, so I decided to build my own as a hobby at first. And wow, I can see why these things happen...this is a very complex software to build. But I am no longer building this as a hobby, and I am much more focused. If you build it right, you can future proof to a degree. But it is still hard unless you have a very disciplined engineering team.

    Musescore just released 4.4 and it's an amazing update. I'd encourage anyone who's looking for a music notation software to give Musescore a try, as it's completely free, and getting very good updates. I used Sibelius for about 10 years, and then switched to Musescore around 4.1. While I still have Sibelius installed and licensed, any new score I write these days I do on Musescore. I gave Dorico a try and it's also really good. I just didn't end up buying it cause I already had Sibelius and I saw what Musescore was working on before 4.0. But the short time I had with it gave me a very good impression. And if I were going to buy a notation software for iPad, Dorico would be my first choice.

      Hi there! Could I ask you, how different is Dorico to Finale?

    • @TheMusicalNotesOfficial
      @TheMusicalNotesOfficial 6 дней назад

      I personally think they are relatively different. The workflow in Dorico has a different approach than Finale. However, it just resonated with me better after working within the program for a while. To me, one of the bigger differences was the separation of write mode and engrave mode in Dorico. Inputting notes and making the score look great were in two different settings in Dorico. Once I got used to the different areas, I was able to separate the tasks associated with each area better. Hope this helps!

    I'm gonna hold onto my college laptop then! JUST reauthorized it on there since it works so much better on Windows 10 rather than my Mac. Makes sense if the coding is really so clunky. I lucked out, I got Finale for $100 through my college when I was in school in a jazz comp course. I was reassigning my authorizations recently through the their website, crossing my fingers that they would still honor them. Had to change my email, even, since I no longer have access to my .edu one. Makes sense that they did though if the parent company is abandoning Finale entirely. Sad. I have many fond memories trading and editing charts with my fellow jazz colleagues. But I look forward to what the future holds with the economics of programing in transcription software. To this day I really enjoy working in Finale, I've used Finale software for 20+ years to varying degrees of engagement as I've grown as a musician. It's definetely NOT a perfect program. There's very much a learning curve for new users and my colleagues and I often joked about how clunky the program was. The menu searching isn't nearly as bad as what I've seen from Sibelius, but I look forward to exploring programs with more streamlined means to obtain options available to the composer or arranger. This video was informative. The AI voice threw me off, I swore you were going to start shilling a new particular program. But I found everything said therein to be accurate with what's going on with transcription software. You made me want to go back to college for a second, LOL! I'll give you a sub, thanks for making content ACTUALLY relevant to my interest!

      Apologies for not mentioning any examples in the video! I am getting better at providing examples throughout my video making process. I find MuseScore to be quite good! However, I definitely notice some MuseScore is slower than my primary notation software. To me, the workflow is a bit clunky, partly due to the lag. Additionally, some engraving aspects can be difficult to add in my opinion. (Triplets and proper spacing were really hard for me for some reason to look perfect. That could be due to a lack of practice!) However, if others don’t find it limiting, I think that’s amazing. MuseScore is quite a solid program. Hopefully more professional musicians support others when using MuseScore and MuseScore becomes a universally accepted professional software!

    I used Musescore for years but quit and ended up paying for Finale for one very simple reason: Musescore MIDI playback SUCKS. It sucks, and the devs have caught the pompous "this software is primarily for notation" mind virus that floats around on forums. No. MIDI playback is very important to a huge number of people, it's just that simple. I found learning Finale very frustrating (personally), but once I did, I discovered that it is also LIGHT YEARS ahead of Musescore in terms of MIDI input with its speedy entry tool, and frankly countless other features. It's only bad when you don't know how to use it. If and when Musescore get serious about MIDI, both input and playback, then they might be able to overtake Finale. But at the moment, it's feels like the free software that it is.

    I don't think musescore particularly needs to care so much about its reputation. Provided that the core open-source project remains pure intentioned of course. We must be vigilantly weary of embrace extend extinguish tactics that muse group might use however and we must defend that at all costs. That said there's little we can do if muse group decide to be predatory. The funding is coming from them and without it any well-intentioned forks will quickly fall behind. It sucks but it remains the reality of open source projects. Ultimately we place Our Faith in the Lord and Saviour our one and only Benevolent Dictator for Life. For better or for worse, despite architectural efforts in software licenses to minimise the risks, ultimately we are still placing our trust in one individual or organisation to do the right thing. So far I believe that muse group are doing the right thing. I find the lack of documentation for the interface between musescore and muse sounds to be a little insulting but I chalk that more up to a move fast and break things mentality rather than maliciously trying to cram proprietary code in an open source application.

      Not trying to complain! Just trying to open conversations and shed some light as to why MuseScore might not be used as frequently as some might hope it would be. (I definitely don't expect music to be ready made for me on MuseScore, but many of my peers do.)

    I think it could do with a full upvote/downvote system. They could also just seperate the brand.

    Another reason? MuseScore 4 sucks, a mere shadow of 3.6.

      @@DissonantSynth I work as a professional composer, arranger amd copyist so I think I know what I'm talking about. MS4 is buggy and laggy and has horrible backwards compatibility. The hyped features were implemented terribly. MS3.6 was snappy and just got the job done. Looks like you have no idea about MuseScore at all or are probably just a hoobyist😊

    One problem I've noticed is that people upload scores without completing them, and also without specifying the instrument(s) they're intended for. I recently checked out a score for a jazz standard. It turned out to be the second trumpet part of a big band arrangement for what I assume was a high school marching band...nothing at all useful to me. And I've also previewed scores that were not in the correct meter, or used dotted note values where they should have used tied notes to make the timing clearer. As you said, Musescore can be used correctly to notate some amazing professional scores, but you can also produce crap. It makes finding good scores more of a challenge, but then again, I often download a free piece of crap that I need to just get an overview of a piece to create my own arrangement, rather than paying the fee for something of better quality that I'm going to change anyway. My solution to the problem you highlighted would be simply for Musescore.com to alert potential users that the problem exists. And that as professional composers, arrangers, etc. the program is a solidly capable way to create their scores for all but the most wildly experimental music.
