Angels of Light - New Mother, the incredible music Michael Gira made between the Swans
Wonderful band, criminally underrated. There's something very special about 90's goth, it was really a time of constant change and experimentation. Maybe it's just me getting nostalgic lol
new to the channel, but i really like the way you talk about music. have you listened to paix by catherine ribeiro + alpes? great french prog with some beautiful vocals and dreamy production. i have mixed feelings about the first track, but the rest of the album absolutely rocks!
This band was ridiculously hard to research. If anyone knows the exact line up for this album please share!
Heya Chris, on another video your brother commented that you composed that analog-sounding, arpeggiated music for the Liminal Spaces intros. Is that so? And if so, would you happen to have a Bandcamp (or suchlike) where one might sample more of your music? I’ve been an electronica fan since the 70s, and am now enjoying the “synthwave” resurgence thanks to shows like Stranger Things. Anyway, just thought I’d ask. :) PS: I’m a sci-fi writer.
I listened to Jonathan's later albums for many years, and even saw him live a few times. His albums were always entertaining and always put on a good show, but he was also always wrong in his attitude towards this album, and I think he could have made much more great music if he had continued in the vein of this album. It's funny that you call this album "childish", as the music he turned to after this actually was childish, with songs about martians and the ice cream man, as noted by the other commenter. As you allude to earlier, this album is actually "teen-ish", and Richman reverted to something even younger when he put this music behind him.
Still sing Roadrunner in my band -- learned this song from the radio in 80s in Providence, RI
Not my cup of tea... not enough talent
Yes. Saw JR a couple of times in 76/77 at the Longbranch in Berkeley. Played the tar out of that album. But i liked Ice Cream Man and Martian Martians too. 😊
I remeber a great song by them that goes: Mary used to play the piano, now she's smoking marijuana, but it's not on this album. Where did it come from?
Great video, man! Thanks for sharing this!
Tony Durant - guitar, vocals Janet Rogers - violin, b. vocals Vanessa Hall-Smith - violin, b. vocals Madeleine Bland - cello, piano, harmonium, vocals Michael Day - bass Michael Gregory - drums
Mervyn Peake illustrated the trilogy. There is a picture of Fuchsia, a drawing I think
It is a terrific album but the sound is absolutely horrible. Bad mix. Bad production. Bad balance. And I think that may have hurt them.
Nice! The precursor to the Far East Family Band. Excellent album.
Great video! Thank you!! Love all Japanese music and culture…. Especially some of the punk bands of Japan!!
Search for :Rooms of anguish by Power of Omens. Acquired taste.
I've listened to a LOT of prog on youtube and was surprised this never came up in my searches. After hearing it I absolutely agree, it really is every bit as good as you claim. Now saved and I'll be listening to it again, and again. Thank you so much for pointing out its existence!
I listened to some of it. I appreciate the ambition and the arrangements. Lead vocals could be stronger. But it is so rare and esoteric. I am glad that it exists.
Hello! I am really happy i just discovered your channel. Could you please listen to a psych/prog rock band from Greece called Pete & Royce? They released a gem back in 1980 called "Suffering of tomorrow".
You can find Fuchsia (1971) FULL ALBUM on RUclips.
Was this what the Sex Pistols were singing about? "No Fuchsia! No Fuschsia for you!"
woke up with "mexican radio" in my head. anything beyond that is new to me. great rundown on the band, thanks!
Thank you so much for watching.
Lost? How so? Out of print? Forgotten?
Thank you for the recommendations. I will seek them out and give them a listen.
Remember the Fuchsia. Nektar.
Nektar was great!
Good idea for a channel but I think including one minute samples of say 2-3 songs would really interest people a bit more. So really too much talk and no idea how the music sound, I hope that helps? Cheers.
There MIGHT be copyright problems forbidding that?
You can find the full album on RUclips.
@@stevensica5918 Duh how did I forget about that you're probably right in most cases! 👍
@@batphink2655 There is a legal doctrine know as Fair Use. It allows small portions of printed matter to be quoted for purposes of review and critical analysis. I wonder if this channel was demonetized if it could proceed along those lines?
Hi Tony D here from Sydney. Thanks ( I don’t even know your name!!) for that wonderful talk. I’m still writing and playing, playing some of those 1971 classics. I’m so grateful you still listen and appreciate my lityle attempts to teach people. You’re great. Would love to hear from you. Amazing xx
Just ran across this video. Interesting concept. However your script could use an edit. Some explanations ramble and are repetitive. Also expand your vocabulary with respect to modifiers and adjectives. You say incredible the way a.certain generation always uses awesome. Finally, would it kill you to give us an actual sample of this music?
Totally agree, it's my favorite TD album. Zeit is a close 2nd. Just found your channel and like the vibe. Cheers
Naming yourself after Fuchsia Groan is setting the bar REALLY high.
Amazing album
It truly is.
I never heard of this band. I used the name fuchsia for a band for a little while in the 2000s
Thanks for sharing this album
Thanks for sharing this treasure. Also have been a lifelong fan of the Gormenghast books.
The self-titled LP by Titus Groan (1970) is a great 'Gormenghast inspired" psych-prog one too (esp "Hall of Bright Carvings").
They Don’t Want Me refers to Stan leaving the band. It was Joe the percussionist at the end of Call of the West. WOV with Stan was Brilliant.
That is good to know. Thanks for the info and thanks for watching.
I didn’t hear you mention the release year? That sucks
The release year is mentioned within the first 40 seconds of the video
1971 he said
Forgot about this one, thanks, brings back memories🙂🙂
But Memories Can't Wait.
I'm really glad. Thanks so much for watching.
Good One.
It's pronounced Schulze (Schul-zeh) , not Schulz.
Thanks!
Back to the Fuchsia! Sorry, I just had to.
Hahaha! Perfect!
I had to read it 3x before I got it. Nice play on words
The Illumination from Pete Sinfield refer to the stage Lights , ok ? The Production really was from Greg Lake..., but the company , etc , told KC. Fripp and Lake confirm that
Thank you so much for all the info! I'm sad I got duped by the picture!
@@LiminalSpacesTalksMusic03 You are welcome! The video is Great! Cheers 🍻
The photo is not from Hyde Park . The bass player is not Greg Lake in the Picture. Maybe Bozz Burrel... There are many photos from Greg Lake with KC in the Hyde park 69. Thanx Olaf the viking ?😂😂 Cheers from Buenos Aires Argentina 🤙 Thanx for the video!
In the court and in the wake.... GREG LAKE Enough
If you like this then check out British folk sike band called Spirigyra.
Interesting story with Spirigyra: My mom brought them up randomly one day because she had the record when she was younger and we searched the internet for them. Every song I played for her was completely wrong! Turns out there are two bands with the same name! I agree, the folk Spirigyra is awesome!
I thought, the name of the band is Spirogyra.😊 They had this wonderful record "Bells, Boots and Shambles"
Before this video appeared on my suggested list I watched a reaction video to a Roger Waters song. Since you mentioned him at the end of the video I wonder if the algorithm suggests videos based on the audio of the video, not just the title and tags? I'm on the last song on Fuchsia now, I'm going to check out The Gormenghast Triology as well. 🙂 Edit: oh, btw The album and Fuchsia 2 is on Tidal.
On my main channel I mentioned that I used to live in Takarazuka, Japan and the ads for the video were all Japanese! I think algorithm considers every word!
I listened to this and it's very good. Very much in the Yes-Genesis-Syd Barrett vein. Do I detect the influence of the Left Banke or is it just a sort of coincidence due to the influence of classical music ? Excellent composition & performances. As an fan of Mervyn Peake's "Gormenghast Trilogy," the band's name has a special resonance.
Thanks for watching!
ffs what a load of bolloxes
I listened here and got curious. I found this here elsewhere on YT and found it quite charming and thought it might be well received. ruclips.net/video/JminceBMf20/видео.html Tony Durant and friends from 4 years ago on a rooftop.
Interesting derivation of the group's name. You might take a detour into the catalogue of The Strawbs (from the same period), particularly the track "Lady Fuschia" from the album Bursting at the Seams.
I've got to dive deeper into the Strawbs! Thanks for the rec!
Thanks for the tip. Really interesting album for all the reasons you mention, although it is clearly "of its time". I then listened to the second album from 2013, and ... if anything it's even better than the debut. I ended up buying the entire back catalogue on bandcamp. You could easily devote another video to Fuchsia II ! Hard to compare Fuchsia to any other artist. I get what you mean about Tony Durant's voice sounding a little like Peter Hammill, although I also hear some of the crisp enunciation of Al Stewart, or the earnest intimacy of Nick Drake. But unlike any of those, Durant's voice has a vulnerable, fragile, untrained quality, almost like Syd Barrett or Robert Smith, which is not a bad thing at all. I love all the strings, which really add a lovely "baroque pop" flavour, but without the jauntiness that haunts that genre. So great to have a string trio in the band proper, rather than just session musicians. In attitude, it reminds me a little of Comus (another unique and rare psychedelic prog folk act), although the sound is quite different. Really great and interesting music, for sure, both the original album and the more recent releases.
Thanks for watching and for the well thought out comment! I'm going to go track down Comus now!
very glad to find this channel ! i listened to fuchsia today and really liked it ! doesn't one of the singers kinda sound like nico or is it just me ? 😅
We're glad you found us! Welcome aboard!
Isnt "moonchild" referring to aleister crowley's moonchild, a futuristic human?
I'm not sure, but it sounds right!
