The grind to the 1% [GT3 iRacing] PART 1
I will be documenting my progress while racing in the simulator in the Ferrari 296 GT3. The point is to see how long it takes for me to reach the TOP 1% of drivers in the world.
It's a VERY difficult task, but I am hoping with proper practice and consistency, I will be able to reach it.
DISCLAIMER: This is just a video of me going over my thoughts & progress in racing. Please don't take what I say as accurate advice!! If anything, I probably need some words of wisdom from you!

This week's Realization on how to Drive GT3 Race Cars
Просмотров 19128 дней назад
I remembered a phrase one of my mechanics said to me in my last KZ Karting Race. "Drive Calmly". I started thinking how I'm overdriving this GT3 car and I'm constantly exaggerating the techniques that I should be using to get fast. After a quick debriefing with myself, I started to use these techniques in a more subtle way, and that was when I got even faster lap times. There is still room for ...
I was ignoring the most OBVIOUS answer - Getting Faster in GT3's

I realized that I was SLIGHTLY overheating my tires and that caused me to lose a lot of lap time. I was always thinking that the tires started to overheat when I was oversteering or understeering. In reality there are different levels for when the tires overheat and I was only focusing in the EXTREME levels (Where I would end up spinning out). But then there are the SLIGHTLY overheated tires, w...

    Do you ever get into a ''slump'' or have a burnout? And what do you do about it?

    • @Achillefsgiannisis
      @Achillefsgiannisis 3 дня назад

      It’s funny you ask because I am currently facing this exact issue and will address it in my next video! The best way I’ve found to deal with such a “slump” is to: 1) Take a break and not practice for a day or two (it resets my mind a bit). 2) Not over push myself to do more laps if I see that I’m getting tired. 3) Analyze my laps and other’s (faster drivers) to see what they are doing differently. 4) Change my driving style. For example, I would change my brake bias, or brake earlier, or steer sooner, etc. (Just be careful because if you change your driving too frequently, you never really learn anything, because you aren’t giving yourself the necessary time to adapt to the change.) But one thing to always keep in mind is that the goal and the reason why we started simracing and/ or IRL racing, is to have fun. Take a break and relax!! There will be “bad” training days but don’t let those drag you down too much. It’s part of the process and you will be back on your feet sooner or later!!🚀🚀

    Any temperatures we can shoot for in iracing for GT3's? I've always known I overdrive the car and overheat the tires, but I don't know exactly how not to and how to identify that I have. I think seeing the live temps can actually give you an indication of that, but I'm not sure what exactly I'm shooting for.

    • @Achillefsgiannisis
      @Achillefsgiannisis 11 дней назад

      From my own research, the tire temp window is between 80c - 100c. Seeing live temps would definitely be helpful, but you can always check to see if you are understeering or oversteering, while you're driving. And if you are, you have overheated tires! And this goes down to the micro level. If you are SLIGHTLY understeering, you have SLIGHTLY overheated fronts. If you are SLIGHTLY oversteering, then you have SLIGHTLY overheated rears.

    Lol…. There’s no epiphany here! The tire model has always been trash. Iracing forces you to drive one style UNDER DRIVE!!!!!!!!!!! Iracing is the least realistic sim …. Ppl are still not getting it. Hahahaha (BTW) the verbiage you’re looking for is driving (Neutral) which again is unrealistic. All racers in real life say the same thing about the tire model every year and next year it will be the same. Lol

      @@scottybevan4108 hahahahhaha. They don’t use it for training as for driving skills. Some will use it because of the laser scanned tracks if they’re not familiar with a location but not from a performance perspective. One thing ppl fail to realize most if not all real racing teams have their own simulators and software programs which makes Iracing look and feel like a toy product. Ppl see that Max Verstappen is the poster boy for sim racing. He uses Iracing as a social club and racing with his team of friends. Over the years there’s countless professional drivers who’ve said that Iracing isn’t close to realistic and that narrative hasn’t changed. I’ve been Sim Racing over 10yrs, Class A in all licenses in Iracing with over 3000 IR in everything except Dirt Oval. After years of so called updates Iracing has basically not changed. Just look at AC and Rfactor2, both are light years better.

      @Achillefsgiannisis 24 дня назад

      @@oldmanhavefun No worries at all! From my own research, I have found that most MX-5 cup cars have a sequential gearbox. So there is no big reason to use the clutch (other than when you are stationary). You can drive it without a clutch and use the paddle shifters to upshift and downshift (if you don’t have a sequential gear lever). But just to clarify one thing. When you asked if you should drive the MX-5 like a GT car, are you referring to the SHIFTING? Because in this case, yes, it’s more or less the same. But if you’re asking if you should use the same DRIVING STYLE for the MX-5 and the GT cars, then the answer is NO. They are 2 different categories that require a different driving style. I have posted a video, recently, where I discuss this exact issue!! Hope this helps🚀

    Smooth is always faster. Too many times I see folks driving GT3 like a formula car, thing is, the aero is way lower. You can't wait until the last 50m to brake and throw the car in, you compromise your grip mid-turn doing so and the whole upcoming straight line following. In a sense having too much oversteer does the exact same thing.

  • @CaptainCrunch99
    @CaptainCrunch99 Месяц назад

    You should start with the fundamentals of FFB. Like, your F meter is red a lot of the time. Maybe you like it that way, ok, but the meter is there for a fundamental reason. To make it easy for you iRacing gives you the option to just select auto to set the FFB levels to be within a functioning range without excessive clipping. So, with better FfB sense you should be able to feel the tires in more detail and not numb out in clipping.

    • @Achillefsgiannisis

    This is one of the main weak points of iracing for most people. The tires are way too sensitive and overheat way too quickly. You should be able to have a little over/understeer when driving at the limit and still be quick (Though you were still overdoing it a little). IIRC Josef newgarden talked about it on stream. He could "hustle" his IRL car a lot more than he could the iracing car. I'm pretty sure iracing is updating the tire model for most cars, so hopefully they tone that down a bit.

    • @Achillefsgiannisis
      @Achillefsgiannisis Месяц назад

      Yep, in iRacing it's really easy to overdo it with the tires. But I'm pretty sure that I was overheating the tires in ACC too! I will have to check at some point. But so far, I am able to go faster in iRacing by keeping this concept in my mind!!

      Generally, in GT3’s, if you’re Understeering or Oversteering, then you are overheating your tires (front or rear, respectively). The problem is that it’s harder and harder to tell when that limit comes when you’re SLIGHTLY understeering or SLIGHTLY oversteering. The only solution I’ve found so far, is to just practice more and get a good FEEL through the force feedback for when you start to feel the oversteer/ understeer kick in. And also try to avoid doing things that will inevitably overheat your tires. Such as, excessive steering, too much braking or too harsh accelerations!! Hope this helps! I’m also trying to find better ways to understand how to react to these micro-inputs, so as soon as I have a breakthrough, I will share it in a future vid!! Best of luck dude🚀🚀

      @@DINOzye Not any that I am aware of. But regardless, most of these types of overlays only show the core temps of the tires. Which is good for an overall view of how the temps change throughout a stint. But, IMO, it's the tire's SURFACE temperature that is more important to pay attention to (and I believe it's best if you feel the grip through the force feedback for this one). That's because the Surface temp is much more sensitive (it changes really quickly for you to keep track of it consistently) and will affect the immediate handling of the car. And I don't know how many overlays for Surface temperature exist.

    The thing about GT3 is that every car behaves differently. The Ferrari needs to break earlier to not over stress the tyre but you also need to moderate more your throttle. To be fast you need to accelerate while still turning and for that you need to learn how much the electronics allow you to accelerate before they take over. Getting to the point where TC activates while accelerating or the ABS activates while braking only makes you slower.

    • @Achillefsgiannisis
      @Achillefsgiannisis Месяц назад

      Thanks for the advice!! I don't really have a feel for when the ABS kicks in, yet. I also made a basic mistake and was clipping my force feedback with the settings I had. So I was missing a lot of detail. I also want to play around with brake bias...I feel like the car is too understeery on entry with the default settings and I need to decrease it from 49.1% to 47.8%. But my concern is that maybe I'm OVERstressing the Rear by doing that (Good rotation on entry, but overheated tires on exit...maybe..?). I need more exposure to these settings to be sure.

    A lot of this is because you are using iracing. You can't overdrive in iracing really at all, therefore you have to slowly memorizing the limit because the tire model doesn't allow you to overdrive. Most other sims are much better at this, yet iracing has great marketing...

    • @Achillefsgiannisis

      Yeah, on the one hand you learn precision with your pedal & steering inputs, but on the other hand, it gets REALLY frustrating to find that "perfect" input. But overall I don't think it's that bad. From my experience, the braking in iRacing is pretty accurate compared to real life...Although the counterpoint would be that each car is a little different, so just because I have had SOME experience, it doesn't mean that all cars behave the same!

I have no confidence in the car and I can say from experience all the driver irl slightly over drive the car, but when I use this technique in iracing I barely keep it on track… I was pretty good in the Miata’s too, I was no where near the best but I could run top 10 and fight for podiums at a regional level (so 1 step down from the imsa series, so technically I’d probably be able to run a bit above average in the cup series)

    In a FIXED set up race like he describes in his video you are not able to change TC or ABS. It is fixed set up. I would say the first thing i would learn is the track. I see your pushing in the laps but i also see a lot of counter control. Turn in, straight, turn in more etc etc. I would highly recommend watching a guide to the track you want to race then set your goal at say 5-6 seconds off the pace but CLEAN laps. Then when you have done that and are doing that consistantly watch a replay of the faster guys and see where their pushing more and you are not. Rinse and repeat. Keep up the good work, you will get to better races soon. I also think that going to the GR86 would of been a nice stepping stone rather than just jumping into the fast cars straight away. I went MX5, GR86, LMP3. The reason i went LMP3 is that there is no ABS so you have to learn to brake properly. Anyway, good luck. Have Fun. That is what is all about.

    How physically demanding was the car compared to karting?

    • @Achillefsgiannisis
      @Achillefsgiannisis 2 месяца назад

      Good question! Compared to KZ karts, the Formula Renault was not that demanding. I think it mostly had to do with the fact that, in karts, your body is completely free to move around and so you have to keep yourself steady using your own strength. In the Formula Renault, I didn’t really move that much (because I was strapped in). That meant that I would use less force to keep myself steady. That’s my theory as to why karts are more demanding (strength wise) compared to the formula Renault. But keep in mind that the track I was testing at, didn’t have that many high downforce corners. So it might have been a bit harder (physically) if the corners were different. That being said, I don’t think that the Formula Renault could ever be MORE demanding than race karts (especially KZ). What I will say was more demanding in the Formula car, was the mental strength.

  • @blueflag4873

    I think you need to just stop aiming for just a laptime. Because that will come on due time. Going fast isn't something you can just will yourself to do. Also if you wish to be a racing driver. Laying down a heater will truly only help in qualifying. But you need to just take a step back and run races in the mx5 series. Or to whatever license you have. Because pace will come. But it requires to be able to look at what others do and what you do to see if you can extrapolate time. It will also help you get more comfortable racing around other cars and having to take corners off line. Or with wonky entries. As that is really where the good and best racers seperate themselves. When they are no longer in a vacuum.

    • @blueflag4873

      Also. Don't be afraid to make mistakes in races and crash yourself or another out. As well, that's racing! As long as you aren't intentionally wrecking. Overcooking a corner and crashing into another car or wall in a race will teach you 1000% more about what you need to do differently. Then overdriving a car in practice to try to gain a tenth.

Good thing for that is time trial so the wether stay always the same. I bacame faqst back in the day due to the GT Academy. Needed to qualify online against 1.4M Driver. Finished top 5. also some WR in time trial. Time trial push you to understand how to drive fast and you can compare to others more accuratly. @@Achillefsgiannisis problem, now i am fast on 1 lap but my race craft is not that good and mistake due to pressure. So after your get fast, time for a lot of racong to improove race craft. Mainly focus on your braking thechnique that is where you can gain most of the time. You have to minimise braking distance and be the earliest on throttle as possible at the edge of grip along with giving the minimum input on the wheels as it create drag. Trail braking really important also. Use all the track most of the time but remember sometimes you can be Tighter due to the next corner layout,.. you need to find a balance between distance the car travel on track and speed to do the shortest lap. If long straight after the corner, maximise your exit ( the time you loss will be gained back in the straight) if corner combinaison, most of the time you maximise your entry and sacrifice on the last for the exit straight. One last bit of advice, when you prepare for the corner coming out of straight for example, try to point the car toward the turn right before braking if possible. Even just few degrees. This will allow you to brake later, more straight and less turn radius needed for the turn since tout car is already pointed toward it few degree. That is few degree less to turn. You will be faster on throttle and more stable tru the turn with that. Good luck

    I think if you want to learn to really control the car you need to drive in as many enviroment (track) as possible to not be too locked to one single track - as you don't experience every type of undulation, curbs, apex. Also sometimes getting some rest between practices is the best way to improve lap times; my wildest improvement was when I practiced on a new track, let it rest for one week (not even raced anything else) and after I came back - little bit forget the track too - my second lap I wondered where I find that much time

This would also bee more inline with real racing, One car, multiple tracks. Also I think that you should do more online racing against other people. Alright, i get that driving is driving but the biggest point is that you learn driving in iracing, its known to be very bad at simulation at the limit of tires, few clips in this video prove it. in iracing you dont go to limit but stay under, if you go over limit even 0.0001% you will most likely spin without knowing that you caused it by being over the limit. the rule is that every sim where you can drift you should go on the limit. in acc you can't because any slide will lose you time. in iracing you will spin. id recommend ams1, rf2 or ac. you can overdrive car to the point that limit of tyre is so much overdriven that tyres melt and you lose time. i know iracing is easy to get in but its not good to really learn car driving, its just good for racing. also iracing sucks for countersteer, in ac you can just feel it and do it lap after lap, in iracing you have to get lucky. You do good job learning but i think you got to the limits of sim you choose :) keep going tho

    • @Achillefsgiannisis
      @Achillefsgiannisis 3 месяца назад

      I appreciate the comment! You made some valid points (Especially about the tire model). I would like to try out other sims as well and see what else I could be missing in terms of realism. Personally, I have no experience in a real racecar so I can't say what's "right" and "wrong". But, I have done some research so I would like to think that I am following some sort of basis...haha!! In regards to the tire model, it IS really sensitive but I think that just calls for more precise driving. Sure, you can't drift as much...but then again...with these categories of racecars, I don't think you should drift anyway (Loss of lap time). The cleaner the driving, the faster the lap time...? I do get your point though. If you can't drift, then the tire model is not right. In terms of countersteering in iRacing...It was a little bit of an issue for me in the beginning...but after getting used to it, I don't lose the car that often (Maybe 1 or 2 times over a "40-laps Full Push practice session"). But when I DO reach the point where I have to countersteer, I am able to catch the car most of the time. As long as there is still time to correct! In order to do that, I had to learn and listen to the subtle feedback that my steering wheel was giving me and I also had to understand "car balance". I realized that sometimes, I just had to brake a bit more, while other times I needed to add a bit of throttle to catch the car...! But then again...maybe with other sims the wheel feedback is more accurately pronounced! You might be 100% right...I really can't say. I'll have to try it out and hopefully, compare these sims to real life at some point! Hopefully, I didn't miss your point that much...haha! Thanks for the kind words, by the way! Let's keep pushing!!!
