Even I, being from Medellin, try to avoid those areas since they are the most dangerous part of Medellin. The vast majority of crimes committed in Medellin are committed in that area. That doesn't mean that every time you go you will be robbed, but if you go several times, sooner or later it will happen to you.

I've been to Colombia several times and wanted to take a look at San Andres. Personally, I didn't like the island. As soon as you leave the center there is a lot of garbage everywhere and you can see destroyed houses all over the island. If you only want to swim for a few days, you're better off in Santa Marta in my opinion. But if you want to go to an island where everything, absolutely everything, fits, I recommend Aruba. It's a little more expensive, but it's definitely worth it. Plus the flight doesn't take that long.

San Andres is beautiful, many of the locals speak English and are friendly and it is very safe there.

San andres is nice but too crowded. Providencia and the small islands are the real secret level.

Man, medwllin have changed. I was born in miami and was taken to medellin when I was 5 in 1986, I raised there and came back to the US in 2008. I can tell you that those places you walked used to be places of pure unbridled violence, I walked dangerous places of medellin but never went up to santo domingo, hell no. The farther that went was barrio antioquia and that barrio was dangerious but santo domingo was at a whole different level. Now that was when medelling used to be the most dangerious city of the world, but now have changed so much that I am amazed.

This was such a spontaneous adventure! Loved that you met Barney and got to see some great views on that moto and meet his fam.
