Star Trek. Star Wars. Doctor Who. Lord of the rings. A lot of people are really angry about modern interpretations of old franchises.
I am not one of those people... And that's a HUGE problem for Disney.

A Late-Night Rant About "The Golden Age of TTRPGs"
Просмотров 7575 месяцев назад
The Golden Age of Dungeons & Dragons ended years ago, AFAIC. Whether you agree or not, it hardly matters. 5E is on the way to the scrap heap. The writing is on the wall. One way or the other, "official" D&D is on the way out. True, that. So what? The golden age of Dungeons & Dragons is over. The golden age of TTRPGs hasn't even started yet.

As I see it, and I was there, D&D began being about shilling books with 2nd. And the physical quality of the books in 2nd were to be blunt shyt. AD&D 1st is still an ok purchase. It's just that OSRIC is the same product but you only need one book. As a DM, one only book appeals to me a lot more than it might to many others. Castles and Crusades, ok, too many books. OSE ok, too many books. OSRIC, just one book. If you buy the hardcover it will cost more than Whitebox or Basic Fantasy. If you MUST measure price, you download OSRIC and print it yourself. Looks great, especially if you have book binding skills like me. I really couldn't care too much about opinions of editions after 1st AD&D. Even if offered the edition for free, I still need to use it, carry it, and manage it at the table. So go ahead, say you like 2nd 3rd 3 point 5 or 4th or 5th and recently 5th the scamming. But the best of D&D is 1st AD&D and earlier. Otherwise, you are just putting money in the pockets of shareholders.

@KaitenKenbu No. Spell slots are unique to 5e. In 2 and 3, you could only cast spells that you have memorized. If you want to cast magic missile twice, you need to memorize it twice. With spell slots you can memorize as many spells as your class and level allows, and cast any spell you want, as often as you like, as long as you have a spell slot of the appropriate level or higher available. The difference might seem slight, but the impact on gameplay is profound.

I love what you said on Inspiration: A trend I see with OSR heads is hating on something such as Inspiration or Advantage because 5e has it, as if it wasn't a houserule for YEARS 5e just streamlined a lot of floating modifiers which is, ironically, a criticism levied at 3e a lot lol. 5e's problems are more in the rules it adds, how complex they are, how they interact, and how they train players to play. That complexity and make is the problem, not any one rule, not the genuinely good ideas it has lol. Also, 5e's Spellslot system was taken from Wizardry! A game from 1980, based on ADnD!

I remember being a kid and being picked on because I played D&D, and yes this was the so called Satanic Panic in the 80's. I also remember what it was like being bisexual in the 80's. How I learned I had better keep my mouth shut if I didn't want to be beat up in school and shipped off to some reform camp by my parents. I live in the south if it is not obvious. D&D was all I had. It was something I could retreat into and be what I wanted to be in the openness of the game world. In many ways I am that old white guy, never had a basement though. But I remember. Now I see people leaving the hobby, some over changes to the game, some because they think the "woke crowd" which I am not a member of I don't think, "destroying D&D"...I mean I do think people should be allowed to love one another if that is their choice regardless of their gender, but I think that is a higher goal than D&D. As for "Destroying D&D" I have never set out to do such a thing by having a gay character. But the entire drama of the past few months has just been too much so I am going back home as it were. I'm dumping 5e for 2nd edition, the edition I started playing way back in high school. And Hasbro, Wizards, the whole community can just have their drama. And since more and more people are doing exactly what I am doing, I give D&D as a brand maybe a few more years, at most. Sad but that is where things are heading I think. Sorry for the long and rambling post.

I still brag about my Hall of Fame badge from back in the day, on the old Neverwinter Connections website. My old online handle was UrKnightErrant. If you want more models, including a selection of tents, large and small, install the CEP. The Community Expansion Pack includes hundreds of new models, monsters, and much MUCH more. Some of the new creature model skins were done by yours, truly. Last I checked they were still using my T-Rex skin, my giant lizard skin, giant frogs, shriekers, nagas, giant jellyfish, etc. Oh... And I'm pretty sure they are still using my Bahamut skin. Another amazing source of content, including all of the above and some AMAZING tutorials, is the Neverwinter Vault. Finally... Check out the Neverwinter Lexicon. It also has some amazing tutorials, but more importantly, it has ALL the syntax you will EVER need to write and modify scripts. Constants... Functions... Events... Instant Death in 5E Massive damage can kill you instantly. When damage reduces you to O hit points and there is damage remaining, you die if the remaining damage equals or exceeds your hit point maximum. For example, a cleric with a maximum of 12 hit points currently has 6 hit points. If she takes 18 damage from an attack, she is reduced to O hit points, but 12 damage remains. Because the remaining damage equals her hit point maximum, the cleric dies. *A week of bed rest!.... I bet that's fun for all your players.

      @grumpyoldgrognard9561 Месяц назад

@SlainByAnOrc Sounds about right. Although I don't think 5e audiences would approve. I cater to the old-school geek-gamers. The downside of broadening the market for D&D is that it has left us OG D&Ders out in the cold. Which is FINE. We have many older rulesets to use and many more new RPGs that are far better than 5E. Let the theater kids have D&D, AFAIC. *Yes. Yes, it is. It's not like we actually have to sit around for a week. If you want, you can just check 8 days off the calendar and get back to the adventure . But that WOULD be boring. Recovery times give the party a chance to start or work on their downtime projects, look for rumors, research lore, and let's not ignore the possibility of random encounters. I realize that 5E doesn't concern itself with things like domain level play and downtime actions, but when D&D was born, both of these now abandoned game elements were central to the game. Again... My game is more "old-school wargamer". It's a fundamentally different philosophy from "modern story-time" gaming. It's certainly not suitable for the mass-market audience 5E is oriented to.

I'm almost 40 and have been playing since I was about 6 or 7, thanks to my older brother. I've experienced 2nd Edition, played loads of 3/3.5E, and now I'm onto 5E. For me, 5E is the most streamlined of all the editions, with much of the chunkiness removed. However, I must admit, I’m more confused than ever! It seems like almost all DMs who prefer older editions heavily homebrew rules to suit their table, just like you mentioned. But couldn’t you do the same with 5E and achieve a similar experience-without the chunkiness? For example, does using D100 for Thief skills instead of a D20 really add anything to the game? Spells have been toned down for class balance, and nothing more. A high-level Wizard and Fighter should both feel equally powerful, just in different ways.

@@SlainByAnOrc Why on earth would I spend my precious God-given time on home-brewing a mediocre game system like 5E when there is already a much better system available that already does almost everything I want it to? Besides, it's already been done by a bunch of people most of whom are much smarter than me. Mike Mearls and his team made D&D5 Classic. It is a VAST improvement over 5e, but it doesn't change the fact that the bones underneath... 5e... is just not that good a game. As for the dice, personally, I like playing with toys so I do prefer the different dice. But it really doesn't add or detract from the game, mechanically. There is ONE other benefit, though. Anyone who is actually going to STRUGGLE with the concept of percentile dice is FAR too stupid to sit at my table. I don't like to mean about it, but one of the worst things about geek properties being taken over by large corporations is that they take these small properties targeting a small smarter-than-average market niche and dumb it down to "broaden its appeal" and capture a much larger audience of mediocre intellects. Pretty much all of the geek culture I grew up with has suffered the invasion of the dumb, and I am just not there for it. Hard pass. Thanks.

@@grumpyoldgrognard9561 Thanks for sharing your thoughts. It seems like your preference for an older edition or system over 5E is rooted more in personal taste and emotion rather than objective logic. Just like everyone else I’ve spoken to about why they play a different edition or system, they can tell me what they don't like about 5E but can’t explain why their preferred edition or system is mechanically better. You mention that 5E is a "mediocre game system" and express frustration with how it's been designed to appeal to a broader audience. While I see the passion you have for AD&D, the argument here seems driven by your emotional connection to a particular style of play and a desire to keep gaming within a certain intellectual niche. It almost feels like you might be trying to make yourself feel superior to those who play 5E-I hope not, as you seem like a nice person. It reminds me of an argument between two women about why Chanel handbags are better than Louis Vuitton-it's all emotion and no logic. Preferences for different editions are a valid reason, but it’s important to recognise that much of what you’re arguing comes down to personal feelings rather than concrete flaws.

@@SlainByAnOrc Yeah. I don't like you, either. Of course... I'm not hanging out on your channel. But hey... If that's the way you wanna go? Okee-dokee. I let you slide a little in that previous post. Edition wars bore me, but I'm gonna go ahead and call you out on it, now. You announced that 5E was the most streamlined version of the game, ever, and they removed all the clunkiness. You announced it as if it's an inarguable truth. That, sir, is BS. You didn't ask me what I didn't like about 5E. You asked me why I didn't mod it to suit my game style. I answered that question, and my answer was completely rational and reasonable. But since, now, you HAVE asked, and although I know you don't actually care, allow me to retort... You want "concrete flaws?" OK. Let's just dip our toes into a couple of 5Es "concrete flaws. 5E has, what? 30 Races? More? How about "subclasses?" A hundred? 120? I'll bet it's more. How many different skills and feats? How many "backgrounds?" Streamlined? 5E is a MESS of conflicting rules. Inadequate play testing has left 5E full of game breaking exploits. Expansion books only serve to increase the clutter AND add power creep to the mix. OG gamers spent years collaboratively creating the rules that Gary Gygax codified into AD&D. They weren't just play tested, they were PLAYED, for YEARS, before AD&D was released. What really irks me, however, is that if you had ever REALLY played the OG editions, you'd KNOW all this, so it really is starting to look like you're just dissembling, at this point. Your "I just don't get it" shtick just isn't fooling anyone. I mean, it IS possible that you're just incredibly stupid. I think it's more likely that you're just a troll. I honestly can't see a pro shill hanging out on my little, old channel, but WotC can be pretty ruthless and vindictive, so I guess it's REMOTELY possible. In any event, it hardly matters whether you are just sincerely stupid, or if you're being deliberately obtuse (which I consider the more likely possibility). I can go on ALL day about "objective, logical reasons" I'm not on team 5E. It's pretty clear that you don't actually want my opinion, after all. I mean, you are literally commenting on a LONG video that DETAILS my preference (which you have clearly not actually bothered to watch). So... Yeah. I don't like you, either, so I'm gonna go ahead and duck out of this thread. But I'm going to leave it up. I trust our good readers to decide, and judge, our little spat for themselves. I'm even going to go ahead and give you a shot at the last word so you can go to sleep tonight telling yourself how amazing you are for winning an argument on the internet. @chaseforchrist I can't honestly say I have a favorite edition of rolemaster. I play a Frankenstein monster version. I started using it when it first came out to play in a Harn home brew, but I didn't buy the campaign guide until I started running an ICE Middle Earth campaign. That was probably 2nd or third edition. I own the current edition, but it's never gotten any table time. My favorite edition of Traveller is mongoose 2e. It's very true to the OG but washes out some of the 70s sci-fi tech tropes that don't mesh with our modern advances. The massive central computer rooms and dumb terminals are gone, now, replaced by decentralized networked systems. Armor is treated differently, but the core rules are basically the same. Oh... And you won't die during character creation anymore. While I haven't decided if that's an improvement or not, the players seem to prefer it.

Honestly, no. I love this game. And YES! A LOT of people did. And I love the D6 system. It's elegant, simple, easy to use, and PERFECT for the kind of cinematic gameplay that Star Wars demands. But honestly... That's not a style of play I usually indulge. I just don't see myself using it. I certainly DO recommend it strongly for anyone thinking of running any kind of cinematic action adventure. Lucas. Spielberg. OBVIOUSLY. Also... stuff like James Bond. I'd give it a hard look for other movie styles like Predator, the Thing, Starship Troopers... It's a super flexible system, easy to homebrew. You can design pretty much an entire campaign by assigning skills to a character sheet. But, again... not my usual style. I am more of a wargamer. I prefer a less narrative cinematic and more open strategic campaign. "Open" is a lot more work. Worldbuilding is a BEAST. WEG obviously did all that worldbuilding for me. They gave me stats and skills for soldiers, aliens, vehicles, the force... And it was STAR WARS! We had a BLAST with it. Even today... d6 is the best solution for Star Wars. d6 is open source and FREE. The stats for every Star Wars element are available online for FREE. I don't see myself using it for much else, though. I like the minutiae. I like spending action points and counting out squares. I don't usually run action-oriented campaigns but when a fight does break out, I like a degree of tactical depth that D6 doesn't really support.

29:24 AD&D has it so if a creature fails 1 saving throw then they become blinded. There is also Web that can prevent a dragon from doing anything for 2 rounds without a spell save. There is is a balance that magic-users should destroy, but not at level 4. I agree with the other points, but if a magic-user has any way of gaining survivability(which is possible through the spell research mechanics that I wish 5e had) then they can break most encounters.

Enemy spellcasters can do the same. That's the game. If the outcomes were predictable, we wouldn't need dice. In any event, Basic and AD&D magic users have become progressively more powerful with each edition, not less.

Pluralism is good. Multiculturalism is not. Gygax made things pluralistic, so did the USA. Pluralism has a core ideology that respects all races enough for them to compete freely (and peacefully) amongst themselves as they mix. Upholding only ideology that makes this possible above them all. Cultures are ALLOWED to go extinct or dominate. And if so, they do so through natural merit. Only the core ideology that allows for this fair competition must stick around. That's the only stipulation. Multiculturalism has the government artificially elevates cultures, which is at first done under some nice sounding slogan (equity/inclusion etc) But simply turns into inserting favorites for political power and strife. Even the ruling ideology can be brought down because only the favorites, and quest for power matter in the end.

I disagree. There's nothing wrong with multiculturalism. Freedom is all about making choices. Without choices freedom is meaningless. Multiculturalism provides a rich panoply of choices. You'll never convince me that this is a bad thing. I'm a John Stewart Mill fan. I'm all about allowing competing ideas to flourish. What you're talking about isn't multiculturalism. It's racism. I'm part of a ethnic, non-white minority and while I do like to see characters that are suppose to represent me more, none of them actually do. They are just the same as the "white" protagonists and the only difference is, they have a different skin color. Or sometimes a accent. I always liked dark fantasy like the Witcher for example, because race actually plays a big role in those stories. How some races are mistreated by others. How they struggle, form resistance etc. while others seek to overcome them peacefully. Having black and white elves from the same community for example, feels like any meaningful conflict is just erased. They are just all best friends? There's no struggle? No discrimination? It feels like hand holding, just making sure that nobody needs to feel uncomfortable or challenged. But... Fantasy is still ... you know. ART. And art is there to challenge people. D&D at this point is just corporate slop. Gobble it up, feel happy and don't think. Just consume.

In a low fantasy game especially a magic user or a cleric by the very nature of being magic users, is already an order of magnitude more unique and special than the average person. Paladins especially, *as a paladin* you are by definition a knight of some kind of order from the start, you're not just some guy who picked up a sword. This idea only really seems to hold up with thieves and fighters.

I'm not so sure about the social skills part. In my opinion it at least helps players who aren't as charismatic as the character they're meant to play. If I'm playing a 16 charisma bard but idk I'm a 7 charisma loser, it feels weird to say that my character wouldn't be able to put things more eloquently than I, in the same way my real strength doesn't affect my fighters ability to push heavy stuff. I understand your actual ability to persuade being a factor but j think being able to fall back on "my chatacter understands this more than me" isn't an issue.

A player who isn't as charismatic as their character can still explain what their end goals are and how they are attempting to achieve those. They can explain if their character is attempting to appeal to a known quality about the npc, or responding to something specific the npc has said or done. The main reason for social skills (in my opinion/experience) is to skip social parts of the game, so you can get back to the combat. To me, basing a social encounter on a roll makes about as much sense as storming an enemy position without any scouting. Without the roll, you could decide find out a little something that makes that npc tick, and set up the time, environment, and anything you might have to entice them (material, knowledge, or whatever) similar to the way you would plan a physical encounter. I guess I think of it as an ambush where words are the weapons. Social skills are great if you want to skip or greatly reduce that aspect of tabletop gaming. If everything is decided by the dice, then there is no incentive for the players to treat npcs as anything other than a target number for a social skill roll. And, after all, that is (at least in part) why we have the memes of the overly amorous bards, right?

I assure you. This is not a phrase that I coined, and I don't know who did. It's funny, in a kinda sad way, how much the game has changed. Back in the day, D&D was a subset of wargaming. The idea of developing a plot of land and raising an army was an assumed part of the game. Now it elicits a blank stare from the DM. Slip your DMs a PDF of the 2e Castle Guide. Or even just a 1e DMG. Hirelings. Building costs. It's all there. How long does it take an orc to tunnel 10 feet? Gary wrote it down somewhere. What we call D&D today isn't even a pale shadow of what it used to be. I'm not saying it's "bad." More "mediocre," really. What I am saying is that modern D&D has NOTHING to do with the original. It's a COMPLETELY different game.

The hours long combats, lack of downtime, and lack of timekeeping left me wanting more - so I began researching OSE and Dolmenwood, and wow! What great products! What immersion! When reading through the 5e rules now, I realize the writers have left a lot of the "old school" rules in, like getting lost, wilderness travel, 6-mile spaces (hexcrawls), and downtime rules, but the system is completely incongruent with these things. And as a result, new players see these things as fluff or worthless (ex: PHB Ranger - it could be actually interesting to use if old-school hexcrawls were a thing)

Yeah, I think I generally agree. I'm a newer player compared to you (, I started playing 3.5 at like 8). Many people say that D&D 5e has everyone being gods. But I somewhat disagree. Because characters are very powerful, but only in specific contexts. It leads to people not acting in specific scenarios, because they don't have a high persuasion score. Because every decision has been deferred to your states. It's why charisma is so powerful in 5e if your DM rolls for everything. People say that older editions of D&D are broken mechanically, and that's a bit true. But 5th edition is also broken. It's so easy to make a character that's very broken, IF you know all the rules. Which leads to experienced players having their characters out class everyone else. So experienced players always become DMs, which leads to a DM who knows so much about the game than the players. And because balance is so abstract in 5e, the DM always needs to low ball the strength of enemies because the DM is a better at the game. So combat will be uninteresting for the DM and too complex for the player. All D&D games are somewhat broken. In older versions it's more obvious, but in 5e only people that know a lot will experience it. Instant death does exist in 5e, but only low level characters will experience it. I do dislike 5e's death system, but it's really hard to change about the game because the power level is baked into the game. Once you're past 5th level it's really hard to die, incredibly so. And it takes away from the drama of combat. Something I really like that 5e does is the part of character creation that has ideals, bonds, and flaws. It's really good for new player. The older system of good, neutral, evil, ect. is not very helpful for defining how your character acts. A lot of 5e advancers feel like they're not in a world. It's your characters and their stories. But in older addition it's about the world, and how your characters react to it. It's why I don't like inns in D&D. Inns and hotels, historically, only existed in large cites. If you are traveling, you needing to convince the local noble or commoner to stay with them, or you sleep in the streets. And the reason inns exist in modern D&D 5e is because, the world is meant to accommodate the characters, rather than the players existing and being effected by the world. Players should become familiar this whatever city, but so many players go from place to place. And everything blurs together. You pointed it about and it's something I never noticed because of how baked in it is the 5e. That spells are so focused being either combat or social. You pointed out that Hold Person only targets people, why. Why can't it target objects. And I've gotten so used to seeing spells as either for combat or social situations that I never thought to question the function of the spell system. Why isn't the spell just Hold, that's much more fun. While I do like having a character I create with some story line I want to playout. I do wish the character stories were more relaxed, with more players having half a sheet description characters. It makes D&D about playing out your character rather than playing with your friends. And I hate that, it leads to people paying for a DM. Which is crazy, that would be like paying strangers to play Monopoly. I always thought of old school players as bein stuck up old people, who refuse to change. But over the last 3 years I've realized I have more in common with the old grognards. I do like modern D&D DMing philosophy, where player's characters have more story to them. But I don't like how D&D 5e makes it seem like that is the core of the game. This video has given me points to reflect on, from the experience of someone much older than me. Thank you very much.
