Rooster teeth shutting down and their impact in D&D
Просмотров 5066 месяцев назад
Allow me to take this week for a more personal video, as I summarize my thoughts around the recent news of Rooster Teeth shutting down. Despite being the internet giant that they were, you'd probably never associate their name with D&D. However, it was through them that I came across Dungeons & Dragons, and also that I drew much of my motivation for starting a youtube channel. Losing Rooster Te...

D&D GNOMES - lore and tips to roleplay gnomes better
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.9 месяцев назад
I never understand the gnomes as presented in Dungeons and Dragons. As a race, they felt like a shallow concept which, while entertaining to roleplay, lacked the depth and lore to allow more interesting characters. They seemed a weird mix between an elf, a dwarf, a halfling and a human. As I researched more about gnomish history and lore, I discovered they are much more than that, but they're s...

Broken Weave, a 5th edition supplement by @Cubicle7Entertainment is a toolkit for DMs interested in turning their D&D games into tragic and contemplative stories in a post-apocalyptic fantasy world, where the gods are dead and magic imploded. After the end of the world, survivors were left fighting for their lives against the ever-present threat of Decay - a living entropic force which corrupts...

How to have Christmas in D&D (and adapt other real-world celebrations)

If you, like I did before, are planning to have some sorte of Christmas-inspired celebration within your Dungeons & Dragons game (or any other TTRPG for that matter), perhaps even a little gift exchange in-character, be aware that you shouldn't simply port Christmas into you setting. At least not before considering some adjustments. Call it Winter Solstice celebration, or Winter's Crest, like C...

Thoughts about the OGL 1.2 - An improvement but the misdirection persists
Anyone else here doesn’t play dnd but likes the stories and lore of the universe? And it’s 100% because I just don’t feel like playing the game my self… yeah definitely not because I don’t have Friends to play with… 👍 yeah
Super interesting!!! I have been recommended one of your shorts everyday, and I'm loving them, keep it up!!
The word race is not negatively charged, you are.
Thank you so much for this video. I had a meltdown at my club last week because I was stressed and couldn't take in all the calculations. But thanks to your explanations I now have an almost complete character sheet and might know what I am doing a bit more next week x
Half orc 4 life crew!
i had a funny idea of a christian tiefling but honestly im gonna have to do some mad math for that to work
This covers everything. Why the heck did i not find this earlier.
I do not play dnd as I have no one to play with. So I’m using this more so for my Baldurs gate 3 playthrough. I decided on a dwarf barbarian who was exiled for treason. A crime he did not commit. I did this because I think the loyalty and pride of a dwarf mixed with the fear of being betrayed again causes a pretty cool (imo) contradiction in the character which not only allows for more freedom but also a sort of progression as he learns to trust again. This is the first time I’ve ever really roleplayed in a game. So, even though I’m 2 years late, thanks for the info so I can more accurately portray my dwarf!
At last someone who understands what an Orc and a Half-orc are! Shame WotC no longer do.
Specimens
1:25 and till 2:16 how the hell did you predict these 2 aspect's were going to get fucked in the new dnd 2 years before they fucked it up I will never understand
Thanks for the info, I’ve been cooking up a half dwarf half rock gnome sorcerer that got struck by an exploding gem, now I have rocky crystaly skin and a crystal gem hammer, criminal/spy background. Was a gem merchant in gnome village turned thief after alteration of appearance due to gem explosion because outcast for appearance constantly moving and searching for magical items and valuables. My first full on character and first campaign
1 year later and WoTC turned Orcs into Mexicans lol.
Hmmmmm.... just started the vid, my tiefling illusionist rogue wad raised by her loving grandma with a very accepting town. Acts like a certain pink pony, but in sense like jinx (CougH).... Good or nah?
Great video! So much thinking about buying broken weave
When you was talking about half Orcs I thought you ment Orogs. They are way smarter and and more calculating. If someone tells me they are half Orc and half human I say they are just Orc. Because Orc genes are way to strong the most that would happen is you look a lot more human then some other Orcs but that would be about it. Doesn't change anything else.
I'm okay with species/races being purely aesthetic
Muito obrigado pelos videos Dao um jeito do caneco!!!!
My dwarf lives by his family creed, which goes like this: "As iron sharpens iron, so doth man sharpen man." Dwarves make things. They build, they craft, they improve. But they also teach people and pass all this down. Crafting or fighting, it's all about mastering the skills that turn someone from an animal into a man. Generosity and an eagerness to both learn and teach should be hallmarks of the best Dwarves. Adventuring is an opportunity to do all of this and more.
My own campaign was dwarf centered or was for a dwarf i played. His people knew they were in decline and sent out thier most promising warriors, scouts and scholars. He helped find that Moradin and the other dwarvem gods were slowly gathering the soulS to them to rework the race as a whole
This was a great explanation! Thank you!
An elf that willingly drinks from the river Styx before they die to cut their soul from all previous memories to spare their next reincarnation any of the memories or trauma they experienced in the current or previous lives.
Ive seen pathfinder 2e do something similar with racial edicts and anathemas. For example, an elven edict would be to "find beauty in nature and art" or "demonstrate superiority to your rival" while anathemas would be to "abandon your own path" or "force another creature to do something".
Thank you for pulling the curtain back. The light bulb is starting to go off for me now, great video
I got into DnD during 3rd edition and you could tell the game designers didn't want the HalfOrc to even be an option by how they wrote them. A boost to strength for the price of two ability scores that completely bottleneck your options. Dark vision. Then.... Literally nothing to roleplay off, no cultural or bloodline quirks, no skill bonuses. The half orc entry is a paragraph next to the full page for stock Dwarves (a race that's even better at being the half-orcs' favored class Barbarian. ) The race has really had an uphill march to be considered among the other PC options.
1:50 TRUE
I just fundamentally disagree on all fronts. You can hand all the ancestry lore and culture to players, but the only players that are going to utilize that to give their characters that "heart" are the one's who would do it anyway. Trying to add or force rules on "how to play" a character based on their ancestry is just too restrictive to have as a rule of thumb, because at the end of the day any player can and should be able to hand-wave those restrictions via backstory. I like my player options being basic and mechanically based, and I can go do additional research on the culture and lore of said ancestry to inform how my character behaves if I *want* to.
Traditionally, Orcs had +4 strength while Half Orc has ever had +2?
Great combat vid, thanks 🙏
I’m playing my first D&D campaign and I’m playing a halfling! So I’m here for this! I’ve been calling myself a hobbit for over two decades, so let’s see if I’ve been accurate.
I'm a year late to this but I do feel the need to say that this isn't a new 5e and beyond phenomenon. I've been recreating all of the old races for personal use in my 5e games and what I've found is that once you go deep enough into the rabbit hole you start uncovering things from way back like the Voadkyn, who, in 2e, only existed to be friends with wood elves and shoot arrows good. In 3.5e there's a lot of really interesting concepts like the Slyth, Xeph, and Neraphim but they all just kind of sit in their own corner of the world with no reason to interact with the other races than chance meetings. Then in 4e you have weird things like the Dragonborn having their Mewtwo Strikes Back story beats stripped from them to just have them be generic dragon people. Also the inclusion of the Mul who, despite having amazing potential for worldbuilding and character hooks, were given the personality of a sand bags and when they were freed form their bad situation they all basically just collectively decided to stand around and kick dirt. It's kind of sad and makes me think that the "you all meet in a tavern" trope might be a symptom of something much bigger because the playables aren't even given a reason to go outside most of the time.
In regards to baldurs gate 3, what does anyone think of a dark urge tiefling fiend warlock? Would it work with the lore?
I like the moustache. But not the beard. I am transfixed by it.
I once had a DM that had a rule against anyone being a half orc because he firmly believed that people would either be racist and afraid or racist and aggressive against you everywhere you go and he didnt want to RP that. I argued he could just make people not racist and he said it wouldn't feel like a real world and i didn't push cause i usually pick halfling anyway.
thank you so helpful, me and my brother showed our cousin dnd over the summer during quarantine and he is an author and decided to turn his writings world into multiple different dnd campaigns. Eventually dnd influenced his world in such a way that elves exist now and I'm the first one to be able to roleplay one in his world so basically anything i say is canon for his worlds elves and this video let me know some ways i can play them from the other races.
I'm gonna be playing a halfling in a campaign soon, so it's good to know this information.
First time DnD player here. I’m playing a half-orc cleric that was orphaned and then raised by the Church of Ilmater. So now, he has an internal turmoil between following the ways of Ilmater (helping the oppressed) or Gruumsh.
I would also love to see your take on Duergars :) great video, thank you!
I mainly just read dnd lore, but maybe Ardlings should have been humans transformed into hybrids due to a cult or mad scientist, or maybe you did it to yourself & you gotta wrestle with this new form. But I agree they should use unique races more, I rather be a strange spider creature with multiple legs or a centaur who has to navigate human cities because it’s different.
This was a great information piece on Dwarfs.
I'm glad this video was actually informative instead of just telling you to voice all of your dwarves with a bad Scottish accent
We can also ad side quests to unlock new and better Armour and weapons like in ac valhalla to get the legendary sword Excalibur you need to find the treasures of Britain enthen place them in these slots in the stones surrounding the sword this will make it possible to pull the sword from the stone and the best part is none of that has anything to do with the main story and it's an overpowered weapon another thing you can ad is parkour to
The problem with DnD is little tin-gods constant attempts to cripple good out of the box builds. Very few DMs are not obsessed with forcing everyone to play cookie-cutter builds. All for the sake of complete and utter control.
years after this video release and its still helping new Dms/ players get comfortable with Battle. My questions are, as a Dm, if a blow is to almost kill a PC who is new to the game could you modify the amount of damage or just let the dice tell the story?, also, if a weapon or hit says 12 damage (2D6+ X) is that giving the Dm an option to choose between the flat rate damage or the dice roll?
Thank you for the kind words, and sorry for the time it took me to answer :) The DM always has the ability to "lie" about the dice rolled behind the screen, and only them can judge the situation live and decide if that's appropriate or not. To protect new players, I can easily understand the decision, but I would advise caution with that, because it can undermine other aspects of the game, especially if used too often. For more information in that I recommend this video: ruclips.net/video/4_g-9FZrgds/видео.html As for the second question, yes! That's exactly what it is. The number before the parenthesis is the average result of that dice roll- Sometimes it's just easier to take it instead of rolling every time.
My most recent elf is an eldritch horror playing pretend. :D
Terrific video ! About the dwarfs I have 5 things that could shift some perspectives: Dwarfs are a dying race only on his own race - the fact is theirs gene is a strong dominant one, so its rarer and rarer to born a pure dwarf due the fact the gene is struggling itself, but if its added on another race (with few exceptions) its always be a Dwarf with some other racial characteristics like a Dwarf Half human or a Dwarf Half Giant (yes, its possible). The problem is they somewhat abhor changes even if his allmight god approves changes to perceive perfection. Moradin is the most powerful god and here's why: he created and wield the soulhammer and the soulforge and is responsible for reincarnation. He bars some races to reincarnate due respect/enemity of other gods tenets like the ELVES and orcs. Reincarnation offers a new perspective and a new story for the races itself as its allow the human to be reincarnated as a giant for exemple; on elves its not possible to reincarnate on a new race but only as a elf and with the same memories of his previous self and they relive it on his sleeps that is called REVERIE (for DMs and Players: its a race isekai! So you can make a really badass story background and a really sick BBEG Elf that wants to become a lich to break the cycle of the never ending failing glory of the elf race on his current cycle. The most important and prestigious class in a Dwarf society is the Cleric: only dwarven clerics knows about the problem of the race "infertility" and they are responsible to matchmaking and glue the society on a goal to a fact that to be a dwarf king you must have someone of his lineage be a cleric or yourself be ordained. In dwarf society raise a child is a life commitment so powerfull that the reponsible parent or both must forego his passion art and life profession to exclusively raise the child even if you're a cleric! They're commutal and dont perceive money as other races do. As a dwarf always can get more gold and silver from mines they often trade his masterwork arts as the most valuable thing! And it is indeed a masterwork as they trying to put everything on it. So be really happy if you get a gift from a dwarf !
Both Tieflings and Aasimars were playable races in 3.0.
proof?
@@mooo_cow The "Races of Destiny" sourcebook
Rock Gnomes seem like natural allies of dwarfs, after all, dwarfs stick to home, the gnomes can go trade, not to mention, work as gemcutters? And they don't even overlap in terms of living area, they're really just neighboring communities.
This was so good, really helpful as I will begin the roleplay of my first elven character this coming Sunday. Thank you!
Ah the Roper! I’m going to DM one in the Tyranny of Dragons. That campaign SPOILER makes its roper intelligent and talking and PCs face it at lvl 3. So PCs are supposed to talk to it and not fight. Hopefully I won’t have to use your tactics. Although it would be interesting for the roper to encounter the PCs at higher level. Although having the roper move to a different is a little problematic. Maybe a portal in the under dark? Anyway thanks for the vid. I like this direction. 👍🏻
