How 9/11 Changed Movies Forever
In 1999, movies like "The Matrix," "Fight Club," "Office Space" and the year's Best Picture winner, "American Beauty," all echoed a similar sentiment -- that the mundanity of middle-class life in America was soul-crushing ... and we as a culture were desperate for a way out.
That cinematic trend came to a screeching halt in 2001, however, after terrorists launched the most deadly attack on America in the country's history.
After 9/11, filmmakers were shaken out of the malaise that seemed to define so many movies of the late 1990s. The "torture porn" trend of the early 2000s, along with a new wave of grittier horror films, like "28 Days Later," revealed a simmering anger in filmmakers, as t...

John Rambo: Myth or Monster?
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.12 часов назад
For most of the "First Blood" movie franchise, John Rambo is shirtless and spectacular. Fighting bad guys! Blasting machine guns! Saving POWs! But not in Rambo (2008). Director Sylvester Stallone works hard to tear down the myth of this character in the fourth movie of the series by showing every brutal, bloody consequence of his heroic actions, which forces us to question our usual rah-rah res...
Here's Why Critics Were Wrong About Rambo (2008)

Are action heroes really the good guys? Is there such thing as a fun anti-war film? Our old friend Sylvester Stallone has the answers. This is why you need to see RAMBO (2008).
Rambo (2008) - Movie Review & Franchise Deep Dive
Просмотров 9 тыс.14 дней назад
The "gore" the merrier? Not for John Rambo. The fourth movie in the "First Blood" film franchise is by far the bloodiest of the series so far, which could have led some critics to dismiss it as a cheap addition to the "horror porn" trend that was popular at the time. Big mistake! Here's why director Sylvester Stallone's heavy use of onscreen violence was actually a smart and strategic way to re...

Although "Pan's" was only recognized with awards for its visuals (cinematography, art, makeup), the beauty here goes deeper than surface level. In thi...

2006: CLICK - Comedy Opus?
Просмотров 62 года назад
Can a "messy" movie also be "great"? Adam Sandler's career leading up to "Click," in 2006, was a defined by slapstick comedies made for teens, with only occasional dabblings in more "serious" fare ("Spanglish" and "Punch-Drunk Love"). "Click," however, tried to do both: be dumb fun, and make the audience feel something real. In this episode, Mike and Brian argue over whether or not that risk pa...

Funny how any mentions of the numbers 9 and 11 in movies in the same scene during the 80s and 90s, always has someone falling from or dying in a helicopter somewhere in the same film. ~ Chile '73

6:00. But the hand held camera aesthetic came from the Blair Witch Project. Not 9/11.

True. Peeping Tom, Black Christmas and Halloween all used handhelds, too, long before. The boom in the early 2000s is what I find interesting, though. Combining that aeshetic with the kind of imagery found in something like "Cloverfield" -- or Speilberg seeing an attack through the lens of a handheld in "War of the Worlds." -- seems meaningful to me.

Thanks, man! I think it's mostly circular -- life influences art / art influences life -- but distance helps to highlight the trends, for sure.

I thought this was gonna go into the censorship of movies post 9/11 but it was more of an ideological perspective of what was popular and in the top 20 grossing movies of 2002-present day. Good watch.

I was just talking with my dad about this movie (he still has an old DVD of it), I love it. I especially love the screenplay and the way it introduces us to the characters; it doesn't force anything but still feels impactful. I wish more movies took this approach to story telling.

I get most of my DVDs from thrift stores and I swear to god it took me YEARS to find this film on dvd. I had been wanting to see it and I wanted to wait til I had it physically to watch it. I’m from Mississippi and none of the thrift stores in my area, or game stores, Walmart, no place had it and I didn’t want to order off of Amazon. Finally when I’m on a trip in Florida, I see it at like every thrift store I went to and I went to like 20 of them. Also the room I was in didn’t have a DVD player so I had to wait til I got back to watch it. When I finally watched it I instantly fell in love with it. I saw Todd Field’s second film, Little Children before this and I loved that film as well. Both have an incredible score by Thomas Newman who is my favorite film composer and his score for these is the reason I sought both out.

Wow. I was looking for an analysis of Donnie Darko I watched a few years ago, and so I've been literally going through every "donnie darko" video , filtered for duration of 20 min+. I've gone through about 130 right now. Most of the tabs I've closed. But I let this one play for a long time. Its one of the better ones. Nice banter, nice quality audio. And not much umming and ahhing - you guys are pros. I've only just noticed that this only has 2 views - you deserve a lot more than that!

Thanks a lot, Anthony! Donnie Darko is one of my all-time favs and I can't hear Tears for Fears, Echo and the Bunnymen OR "Mad World" without immediately wanting to pop it in for a rewatch. We have 50+ more episodes out there, with a few horror-themed ones (Shaun of the Dead, Saw, The Village, Open Water) coming in October :).
