Big Boy 4014 Excursion Train Immersive Binaural Audio
Bigboy 4014 Union Pacific Railroad excursion train heading into Reno, NV. This audio was taken near the track at Stagg Lane near 4th Street. The locomotive's whistle can be heard in the distance as it passes through Verdi and Mogul through several grade crossings, then finally as it makes its way around the bend, a final whistle call blows as it approaches the crossing at Stagg Lane whereupon dozens of onlookers wave at the saluting crew and passengers.
There is a diesel helper locomotive one car after the tinderbox car.
Only a bit of audio processing in Adobe Audition was done to remove people nearby walking on gravel, talking, making noise. Had to remove an entire section of whistle-blows...

For this test I took a quick roll up-river to 700 Riverside Dr., where the 3-story condominium project is being built. Accessibility to and fr...

Serenading a Forgotten Park

Back in May, I decided to do something a little different one day while busking. Instead of lingering around the riverwalk, I decided to venture out to where all but the city's underclass would hear me. At Kuenzli Greenbelt Park-the stretch of river path near what will soon be a daunting police fortress, I serenaded the serene surroundings, once hailed as a park by developers, 40 years ago, and...

    Ummm but according to the law you have pulled up at minute 1 and second 18 it claims to be illegal to operate a bicycle on a sidewalk in a central business district. If I'm not mistaken in the video you recorded, you are clearly riding on a sidewalk in a busy central area. As a long time citizen of the Reno area I am well informed of the pedestrian laws. Also, as fellow biker I have concern for your safety, as I believe you are putting yourself in grave danger of getting run over. This dear kind meter maid seemed as if he was looking out for you. I would have been grateful for his presence and kind words. I do hope you change your ways and don't get smushed by a careless motorist.

    • @LufiFeats
      @LufiFeats Месяц назад

      In short, the ordinances you cited do not apply here. It is a designated bikeway, and it has priority given to it by MUTCD signage and markings. The longer story goes like this... First, to address the "no bikes on sidewalks in the central business district": You are referring to RMC Sec. 6.18.110. which is not applicable to the Truckee River Bike Path. The bike path was established as part of the regional bikeway system plan in 1976. It is what is also dubbed the "Tahoe Pyramid Bikeway" (a larger project outside of incorporated territory). I'm surprised. You're a long-time citizen in Reno who drives a bike and you don't know that this is the Truckee River Bike Path? Established 40+ years ago as part of the regional bikeway system? Additionally, the piece of state law (NRS484.031) which establishes "Central Business Districts" was repealed in 2009 ( www.leg.state.nv.us/nrs/NRS-484.html#NRS484Sec031 ) so RMC 6.18.110 has no legal teeth. It is outdated law. Secondly, regarding who gives priority to who at this junction: As I stated in the video, markings and signage on Sierra St. clearly give priority to the bikeway. As a long-time resident of Reno I assume you have a driver's license and are knowledgeable about local and state traffic laws. Then you must know what a pedestrian safety zone is and why it was established. But in case you missed it, the story was covered widely in 2021: thisisreno.com/2021/05/reno-to-establish-pedestrian-safety-zones-in-downtown-area/ mynews4.com/news/local/first-ever-pedestrian-safety-zones-installed-around-reno facebook.com/cityofreno/posts/introducing-the-first-pedestrian-safety-zone-in-the-state-of-nevada-located-on-4/10158113541062050/ www.reddit.com/r/Reno/comments/oal7jm/nevadas_first_pedestrian_safety_zone_established/ A @cityofreno video covered it a year ago: ruclips.net/video/QvE52EZKCIQ/видео.html As I stated in the video, the sharks teeth and yield signage clearly gave me priority at this junction. Even if I was walking my bike, the cars would still have to stop for me. I would not yield to them. They yield to me. highways.dot.gov/safety/proven-safety-countermeasures/crosswalk-visibility-enhancements ruclips.net/video/zUeBhfTlvNU/видео.html ruclips.net/video/f6jiqDVK520/видео.html As an employee for the city, and one who enforces laws, I can only imagine the staffperson who chastized me was briefed on basic Nevada rules of the road and local ordinances. Instead, he chose to ignore those briefings and spread disinformation to someone from the public who clearly was more studied on the subject than him. One can imagine that most of the time, the average bystander will just take his words as true. This is a disservice to the community.

    To your public comment, I'm not sure why the Virginia Line and Lincoln Line operate differently than a numbered line... they don't even meet the very low standard to qualify as a "basic BRT". If you use the standards set forth by the Institute for Transportation & Development Policy, for a system to qualify as a BRT, it must score at least 20 out of 35 in the BRT Basics section of the scorecard... if we are being generous, the Virginia and Lincoln lines score between 7 and 10 out of 35 in that section. And if we were to use the full scorecard, it is entirely possible the system would go negative on points with all the deductions that would have to be taken (such as poorly maintained infrastructure with the nonfunctional route info displays, lack of enforcement of Right-of-Way for the very few sections that have it, which that lack of dedicated right of way is a large part of why it doesn't qualify as BRT, and pedestrian and cyclist fatalities along the corridor). I'd love for those two lines to be brought up to BRT standards (I'd love for them to be gold standard, like what Albuquerque has achieved, but at this point, I'd settle for basic). itdp.org/library/standards-and-guides/the-bus-rapid-transit-standard/

    I kind of wish that you had made a bigger deal about the fact that bikes using the bridge are expected to share the lane with heavy trucks, not just cars. Also, there is plenty of room for proper bike lanes on that bridge. There is almost never, if ever, enough traffic to justify needing too lanes in each direction. Cut it down to one motor vehicle lane each direction to give the space to sidewalks and bike lanes and drivers, who aren't having a kneejerk "not my lanes" reaction won't even notice a difference.

    • @LufiFeats
      @LufiFeats 2 месяца назад

      Sutro is a street I can talk about more in a future video. I needed to stay on topic. It was the first time I experienced standing on that bridge. What you saw were my actual first impression reactions as they happened real-time. And obviously none of that video was scripted, so if you'll give me some slack. :) Later, once I discovered the treasure trove of information from the 1970s about the bikeway system developed by Public Works, which never got implemented, I came to understand why that whole area became the way it is. Wells St. Bridge was supposed to be the one with a separated bikeway. It was much lower and flatter. There was an upper and lower bridge constructed, and the lower bridge was turned into a dead-end when UPRR upgraded the railroad for intermodal traffic. That stub of a bridge could easily be converted into a dedicated bikeway bridge which leads up to Commercial Way, which leads to Sutro, which would be far superior for micromobility traffic, without having to use the 1990 car-centric bridge on Sutro. Arched clear-span bridges aren't as desirable for bikes because you have to huff and puff in either direction to get across the thing, bike lanes or not. You can see all this on my connectivity plan here: qgiscloud.com/Ratspeed/reno-sparks/?l=Bike%20Routes%2CCentral%20Business%20District!&bl=Aerial&t=reno-sparks&e=-13336775%2C4797263%2C-13335493%2C4798297 If in the future the Sutro/Kirman bridge is replaced, I would be interested in widening the construction to have ADA accessibility on both sides, 10-foot wide shared-use protected path on the east side, which would connect up directly to the path I'm fighting for next to Reno PD. Then the path would lead south and travel clear south to the Red Experience south of Plumb, passing Renown, Pickett Park, the VA hospital, Reno Public Market, etc. The north connection could take people clear up to the bikeway on Oddie/Sutro, then to the Wedekind bikeway I have planned. I'm interested in bikes, scooters and other wheeled pedestrians getting their own roads entirely.

    This was definitely one of those headlines that I really enjoyed, it was so completely dishonest, but at the same time, for a few brief seconds, it felt good to think that just once there was a car versus bike collision and the car lost. When you know that the unbiased reality is that, just based on physics, any time that a car and a bike, even more so a truck and a bike, have a collision, the bike is going to lose, the fantasy of the opposite being true is kind of tantalizing. Of course, RGJ had it as clickbait. Honestly though, this headline doesn't bother me nearly as much as all the passive voice headlines that every news station likes to use. "Pedestrian hit and killed by drunk driver", no, stop using passive voice to shift blame, "drunk driver hits and kills pedestrian."

    Yah it's normal. They are the STUPIDEST boat anchor thing EVER put on a bicycle. I could only get 38.1 mph out of it and Nexus 7i, on my speed hill, where my SA XL-RD5w did 46. The 7i does shift better with the paddle shifter. Overall it's likely 1 mph slower. Even worse in winter. OTOH .... Sturmey Archer 90 mm XL DRUM brakes are the BEST thing ever put on a bicycle. ZERO drag and works the same in any weather. My first one with a dyno, has 32,000 miles with 8,200 on tour with the bike at 120 lbs, with me near 300 total. The drum brake is right up with disc brakes stopping, but without squealing, fussing and short pad life. It'll have 36,000 miles when it gets done.

    RTC public feedback tends to be, "we want the public to tell us how amazing we are." I grew up in Reno, Reno will probably always be my home, but damn do I miss living in Salt Lake sometimes and complaining about UTA and their problems, but at least Mike Allegra (their director when I was living there) had a background in transportation (corrupt bastard that he was), and when he left, they listened to residents who said they wanted someone who truly had experience with an integrated transit system, so they brought in the guy who was general counsel for SEPTA to take over. Meanwhile RTC hired the old assistant city manager. Sure glad the guy who oversaw parks and rec is now responsible for our regional transportation system.

    I'm surprised that there is a street with normal size for pedestrians in US. What is the point there, City Council wants to do there? Prioritize cars and take away space for pedestrians?

  • @smileyeagle1021
    @smileyeagle1021 Год назад

    I do somewhat take issue with your statement that we are wheeled pedestrians. We really aren't. We definitely aren't cars, that's for damned sure, but we aren't really pedestrians either. With a bicycle, we can easily get up to speeds of 20-30 mph, making us potentially dangerous (though definitely nowhere near as dangerous as cars are) to pedestrians. Good cycle infrastructure needs to recognize that while bikes are closer to pedestrians in the pedestrian versus car spectrum, we aren't just pedestrians with wheels (that would be roller skates and roller blades). Also, a few places you mention narrowing lanes to 9', I'd recommend doing that the entire length, whether or not it is needed for space, just because it will better encourage driving at a consistent safe speed the entire length of the corridor (people tend to speed up and slow down as lanes widen and narrow). In the areas where that reduction in lane width wasn't needed to make room for the cycle track, the additional space can be given to additional landscaping (downtown desperately needs more urban trees for shade in the summer). I'd also propose that since your proposal resulted in a net increase of parking spaces and a net reducing in loading zones that some of the parking be reallocated to loading zones to balance things out.

      "Wheeled pedestrians" is the term that the Dutch traffic engineer from the Netherlands who gave the presentation from the Dutch Cycling Embassy ( @cycling_embassy on RUclips ) used to explain how the Dutch view bikers during the Think Bike workshop given to the Reno community last year. It was in his presentation slides. Here's a great video that shows the concept: ruclips.net/video/ZTeGdHnJ7VM/видео.html .. No traffic signals needed for a road that is entirely for bikers and walkers. It's just not needed. Cars are guests at this intersection, and the traffic control devices are for them. These include the striped center lane, the bricks to slow them down, and the signs informing them that bicycles have primacy on this road. Compare this to the American way that traffic engineers construct roads to treat bicycles as motor vehicles, and you can easily see why the Dutch concept is much more sane. Instead of pretending a bicycle is a 2-ton vehicle and stick them onto the same network, the Dutch divvy up the road spaces into spaces where each mode is given primacy. Active Towns had a wonderful episode with a Dutch engineer about all these small details! ruclips.net/video/mKsNE7pMBNs/видео.html By the way, thanks for the comment!

    • @LufiFeats

      Taking space away isn't the right way to look at it, imo. We have 24' wide sidewalks from a time where we had 20+ casinos on the strip. Only 4.5 remain, and the downtown corridor is turning into mixed-use residential. That means only a 10' wide sidewalk is needed. The extra 10 feet is plenty to use for bikes. All that needs to be done is put a stripe down the sidewalk and fix up one of the intersections at 5th street. The second option is to replace the asphalt street with pavers and bring traffic down to 15-20mph and you don't need any separation at all for wheeled pedestrians.

      @@fermenteddreg Ignore the truck driver swerving into oncoming traffic, that's fine. Let's all talk about every minor slightly-maybe-disagreeable thing any cyclist has ever done! Motorists can't imagine a non-motorist doing the same things they do on a daily basis. They hide behind their multiple tons of metal while breaking every traffic rule on the books.

      Y'all are whining about cyclists in the wrong place. Try crying to your mommies about the horrible communist Democrat cyclists taking over America. I'm sure she'll care.
