I hope to bring you a practical demonstration of what can be achieved from a garden shed. I do not have access to a luxurious workshop, I am not minted with money and everything that I produce has been done with affordable wood and finishes. All of my tools are Christmas and birthday gifts, with the exception of a handful of old tools I bought on Facebook marketplace for £50.
I also practice watchmaking/repairing. Again, all done on a small budget for keeping my mind working.
Disclaimer. I am not a professional woodturner. In fact, I am a forensic dude who needs the therapy of woodturning and watchmaking. I am self taught, so I am unaware of the trade 'do's and don'ts', other than what appeals to commonsense!
If you copy my techniques, then please think about whether it is safe for your environment!
I am not sponsored by anyone, I use commonly available products and only mention them if it works for my turning purposes.
If you want to send me nice stuff, I would never say no!

Woodturning - A nice little church pugh oak bowl!
I was asked to help sort out a load of wood from a church loft .... as a result I was allowed to take a pick from a pile that was going to be binned. I have a few oak bits and a gazillion smaller bits for pen blanks! Here is a bit which I am making some little bowls from.

Looking fantastic!!! Tiny shiny... lovely!!! 🎩👍👍🇩🇪
Thank you, my friend. 👌😁
Another great video and bowl 👍
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed the vid 👍🙂
Nice to see the sapwood/heartwood contrast. All the laburnum logs i have the sapwood was worm city. Good job.
Thank you. Yes, I do like to try and keep the sapwood if there is any., the contrasting colours makes it more interesting. 👍
Looks good Paul.
Thank you 🙂👍
Definitely inspired to make a pull for one of our lights now!
and it definitely looked like an acorn!!
It's easier than you think ... My Mrs is happy with it, so that's a relief 🤣
Lovely bowl! Please do let us know if it warps!
Hi 8bit! Thank you for your kindness. Sure thing, though a week later and it is still round ... I will do an update in a couple of weeks, just to give it time to settle down 🙂👍
Another pretty bowl and an entertaining video Paul. 'm out of action myself as my drive belt broke and I can't get a replacement over here till the end of the month. Good luck with the craft markets.
Hi Bryan, thank you ... Yes, it has lovely colouring and it turned beautifully. The funny thing is that I was expecting it to warp a bit as it dried, but ... It hasn't moved a cm yet 🤣 Oh no, drive belt probs, that's a pain in the backside. I hope it's an easy one to replace (when you get it!). Cheers matey 👍
Nice bowl Paul. 👏 What’s was the screw chuck you showed at the beginning?
Thank you 😊 That’s an Axminster screw chuck, I like it a lot, apart from the rust. It probably isn’t stainless steel as I have to use an oily bit of 0000 wire wool on it periodically!
Lovely little bowl mate👌 good luck with the markets🤝
Cheers Kezza. Yeah, always like doing markets …. accept for when it’s cold out! 🤣
That is a nice piece of wood and a nice simple elegant bowl!
Thank you. I enjoyed turning this piece. I never turned ebony before, so didn't know what to expect. 👍🙂
What a fantastic bowl and what a beautiful finish Paul. You appear to have many strings to yur bow too with the writing. I really don't know where you working people get the time for all these interests.😃
@@bryaneltornerodemadera7397 thank you Bryan, I really appreciate your response 👍 It takes me about 5 years to write a book, you could say I’m a bit slow at it … and you’d be right 🤣 I’ve only ever read about 3 books, so that’s the real reason behind the time it takes …. Reading doesn’t come easy to me, it makes me really sleepy and I only get through one page before I’m pushing out the ‘Z’s’ 🤪
Love the colors! What angle are you sharpening your gouge at? Looks really pointed to me. Cheers Paul!
@@STMwoodturning Yes, it’s a lovely bit of wood. Urgh, that gouge is pointed too much. It’s 55 degree, but the problem is my cheap-ass budget! Cheap Amazon tool has a very sharp and deep v-cut! I’m slowly grinding it down to lessen the point! 😳
Another great video, I also have all the gear but never made a pen , just never seem to get round to it .👍
Thank you for the encouragement 😁 ... I had always seen people making pens, so I thought it was about time I had a go! I've made about 15 more since then, each one getting better than the last ...when you work out the tricks, it takes a few minutes off the process and adds a better finish to the pen. I reckon I'll have it sussed by the time I get to the thousand mark 🤣
"Bushings" and "barrel trimmer". I prefer a simpler finish myself so I just used sanding sealer, then a hard carnauba wax stick followed by a microcrystalline wax stick. I also turn all mine with a skew chisel and sand with the lathe off along the axis. All that said not bad for your first effort! I sell loads all year round at markets.
🙂 that's exactly what I did with the following pens ..... So much less faff, and actually makes the pen feel a bit more like wood!! (Re: carnauba wax and sanding sealer.) Roger that on sanding, and I will give the skew a go ... Always up for improvements
That is awesome. Didn't realise you needed so many tools to make a pen. So the copious amounts of CA is like a clear laquer. Nice one Paul 👍
Thanks Stuart .... Yeah, it was all smoke and mirrors at first, but actually the process is fairly straightforward, it's just tuning your ability to do the process 🤣🤣
I think your cool, keep up the cool show!😊
Thank you, I'm glad you like the shows 😁👍
A really nice design and "rescue" Paul. God luck with the show in November.
Thanks Bryan .... Plenty of time to make some stuff for Christmas markets 😁 That was a lucky rescue, it could have been a whole lot worse!
Nice bowl Paul. Consider the troublesome parts as "character" if you can. Interesting back story on the wood itself also. Congrats on breaking the 300 subscribers mark! I'm only at 281 at my last check but I don't have fancy theme music either. 😁
Yes, indeed ... It certainly is characterful 🤣
What a gorgeous piece of wood and a fascinating back story too. I think you did it credit Paul. I also love your new intro and outro. Did you have the music specially written and recorded?
Hi Bryan, thank you ... I'm glad you liked the bowl, and the music, I hope King Charles is watching! 👑 Well, I sat down with some music AI software and worked at it for about an hour before I got to the tune I liked. I will probably be hit for AI royalties sooner or later ... So it might disappear as quickly as it came 🤣
Lovely piece of elm there Paul, Interested in how you filled the cracks and holes. 👍
Hi Stuart, thanks for the comment. There were a couple deep holes which left me a little surprised at, but I filled them with coffee grinds over a few layers, where I squirted in some CA between the layers ... Then tamped them down each time. That dealt with the holes. The cracks were a little more straight forward, where I used black CA because they were in fairly dark inclusions ... So it was dark enough to not really make the black CA stand out too much. 🙂
Another interesting piece Paul. Hawthorn looks fairly dense. Never turned any myself. I look forward to your weekly offerings now. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Bryan, I hope you mean 'interesting' in a good way 🤣🤣 I'm glad that my offerings help your day along 👍
Beautiful work!
Thank you so much for your kindness, I really appreciate it 👍
Sorry about the sound quality... I think the GoPro mic was blocked with sawdust! Next week's video will be done on a different device (I know that because I have just uploaded it! - it is a whole lot better 😊)
Nice work, mate. That little detail on the outside edge is a great touch. You handled that crack really well, mate. I understand how you feel about buyer’s remorse, but it’s still holding onto that beautiful bowl you made. Cheers, mate. Kezza
Cheers Kezza, I really appreciate you taking a look at the video .... Of course I draw my inspiration from you and your channel (amongst a few other top dudes) 😀 Yeah, little cracks are pain in the rear sometimes, but it's just part of the deal ... as we all know!
Niiiiiiiiiiiiice! Gorgeous wood and a lovely simple design really brought out the beauty of the wood. Subscribed and hello from Canada!
Hi Tom, it's good to see that I made it across the pond! 🤣 Thanks so much for watching and subscribing, I truly appreciate it. Funny enough I just made another one of them because the 1st sold in just a few days .... I love that wood 👍🙂
A beautiful vase and a thoroughly enjoyable video to watch Paul. I particularly enjoy your dialogue whilst filming, keep it up. I must get out there myself and do some as soon as it cools down.
Thank you for your kind words ... I am glad you liked the video. As you can tell, there is no script, I just say what I see and think. I do wonder if I jabber on a bit 🤣🤣
un fameux bricoleur celui là. poncer et tourner ensuite. merci les outils....

Thank you for that, much appreciated 👍😌
Sorry to everyone .... I keep calling the outside shape and OJ ..... I do, of course, means OG!!! Soz!

@@E-Glide Thank you, my friend 👍
Amazing flash in the grain! Glad you got a sunny day instead of the liquid sunshine you’ve been getting. Don’t forget the sunscreen!
@@STMwoodturning ha ha, the sun will be short-lived, I am sure if that! Thanks again for watching 🙂👍
Nice work Paul. We've been getting some liquid sunshine here as well, especially in the afternoons and usually in thed form of thunderstorms. Take care, Stuart
Thanks Stuart … dreary isn’t it!! Thank heaven for lathe-caves 😁
Thanks Paul, another really enjoyable video to watch. What a lovely bowl, skillfully turned and finished. Shame about the weather but count your blessings, it's too hot to get into my shop here (high 30's).
If it was the high 30's in the UK, I'd come out of my little shed looking like a basted turkey 🤣 Thank you for your support, I really appreciate it. I was just thinking about what I should make for next week's video, perhaps a giant fan to send to you! 🤣🍻
What an ambicious project and so well copleted. Lovely grain and finish.
Thank you ... Yes, I thought it was a little ambitious too. Though, I have done another one since and I'm getting the hang of turning outboard now! 👍🙂
Gorgeous piece of laburnum and fished beautifully. I've binge watched several of your videos this afternoon and thoroughly enjoyed all of them.
Ha ha, thank you for taking the time to watch my mad ramblings at the lathe! 🤣 Yes, I love turning laburnum, such a beautiful wood.
Very pretty bowl Paul, and a very enjoyable video to watch. Just subbed and liked.
Thanks again, I think I've posted about 50'ish videos, you might be at it for a while 🤣🤣
Nice little bowl Paul. If the pear tree stop producing fruit, just turn it into more bowls 😂
Thank you 👍 don't tempt me with the pear tree ... I think the Mrs likes it there 🤣
@@ClickandTurn 😂😂
Lovely piece of wood there Paul. Shame about the crack, altho hardly notice now. Turned into a nice bowl. Can't wait to get our tools sharpened, we are going to be fighting over the lathe at the Men's Shed 🤣
Hi Stuart .... thank you, though successfully dealing with cracks is another skill which can be a bit 'trial and error' until you've done a few!! I'm looking forward to getting you chaps up and running on the lathe, with some sharp tools 🙂
Looks like a pear to me. Nice one
Cheers 🙂 I've made a few more since then .... I am pleased to report that they're getting a little better 😁
Nice little maple bowl Paul 😊. You’re braver than me with making a bead. But like you mentioned, practice makes perfect. Cheers, Stuart
One more question: was rebuilding the Tormek worth the trouble? Is it that much better than a regular grinder with a jig system?
Ha ha, yes indeed. I definitely need more practice with skews and beads .... But I am slowly getting there. Thanks for watching the vid, truly appreciate it 😊
@@STMwoodturningI was getting really inconsistent grinds before, so that's why I decided to go for the old Tormek. If I had bought an 8" grinder with CBN and jigs it would have cost about £600, a Tormek and jigs new was nearly £1000. My 2nd hand one cost £50, but I replaced the main shaft and bought some new and 2nd hand jig ... I suppose the full kit has cost me about £450. Now I get consistent grinds and they're pretty sharp too. So yeah, I think I'm happy with this 👍
Nice job Paul like the look of it is that a piece of mahogany Blessings your volume for speaking could be turned up just a little
Hi, thanks for your question... Yes, it is a type of mahogany called Sapele. I'll have a go at turning up the volume, but I use a GoPro, so will need to do it at the editing end. Always happy to oblige 🙂👍
“… bootleg…” 😂😂😂 I enjoy your humor! Nice little nightlight as well. I haven’t turned much resin and although I like what it can do for wood, IT’S MESSY!
Ha ha, thanks... I should have been drinking that stuff, not pouring over wood 🤣🤣 Yes, resin is messy alright, but I like how it can compliment wood nicely, when using the right colours. I did another resin project over a few weeks, but only filmed a few bits ... for some YT shorts. Hey ho, just chopped down a hawthorn tree, I have a few days of processing it now!
Guess I didn’t know it was broken…
I was just so happy, I had to share 😂
@@ClickandTurn how long has it been broken and what was wrong?
@@STMwoodturningit's a 'hobby' style bandsaw but wasn't very sure about it ....lack of power and 12tpi. I broke the blade. So did some research and bought a half inch 4tpi blade. Goodness me, what a difference. I was cutting 3" bowl blanks from sapele and oak the other day. I was so happy ,😄
@@ClickandTurn I run either a 3tpi or 4tpi on my small 10” Wen bandsaw. Makes a huge difference in the cutting!
Nice little bowl Paul. Sorry that you were “under the weather “ while making it. Hope you’re feeling better. Cheers, Stuart
Thank you Stuart, well ... I'm convinced it's my third run at COVID, so feeling rather pathetic 🤣 still, plenty to do in the lathe-cave to stop me getting bored!
Nice little bowl, Paul. Ask your dentist for a few used scalers (that's what they call them here). Very handy for getting into small spaces.
@@E-Glidethank you for the tip ....bas it happens, im at the dentist next month, I'll ask him 🙂👍
Thanks for sharing
That is a real piece art work. Lookin forward to watching more of your work.
Thank you for your kind comment ... I'll do my best to keep the standard up 😁
Probably sanding sealer fouling the sand paper rather than the grit. Great piece though. I often put old pieces back on the lathe to refine them but you need to oush yourself a little sometimes. Cheers, Dave
Thanks Dave. Indeed, I was a bit nervous about messing up the rim with the beads, but there was plenty of meat left on it to go again .... given a little more time 🙂. I did enjoy it and I have another lump of elm to push myself some more!
Thanks Allen, this is a beautiful piece of wood, for sure 👍
