BRYSTON 4 B NRB Stereo Amplifier Repair
These amplifiers develop bad dc offset hence blowing tweeters and midranges and transistors. It was fixed in the ST and later models.
@@laszlosokolai2858 Hello teammate! Thank you very much for sharing. I really appreciate it I have a huge favor to ask you, if you haven’t yet, please subscribe. It really helps the channel. There’s so rather simple modification that adds a shrimp pot to adjust the DC offset I usually get it down to near zero by replacing two transistors (differential amplifiers ) with a match set. I think the problem is the old “If it ain’t broken don’t fix it” Thank you very much once again! 🙂🙏💥💥💥
nice work. The model 9s are really nice sounding amps. cleaning off all the old solder and leads on the terminal post boards takes tons of time. Most techs do not want to spend the time to do this since they will not get paid by the customer to do it correctly. VAC-AMPs made re-issues of the Marantz 9s a number of years ago including getting the power and output transformers made by the same company that made the originals. They sound very close to the originals. Also great work keeping the carbon comp resistors in the signal path. They are part of this amps sonic signature.

Where are you located? My channel went out on my bryston!
Hello teammate! I’m in Miami.
@@Tinybenchthank you for the SWIFT response. I’m a few hours away in Jacksonville. What would you charge for a repair like this? I’ll make the trip for sure.
@@SOUNDCONTROLFLA It’s probably the output transistors. That’s what it is most of the times, but sometimes it can be something like a diode. You can also be just a fuse which you can check yourself very easily. It’s really hard to say without seeing it in person but an average it’s around $300 including parts. If you really like the Amplifier, I would be more inclined to just do a full restoration and that way you know the amplifier will last you if you decades. The amplifiers are rather simply, and it would just be a matter of replacing all the electrolytic capacitors, thermal grease, and any resistors out of value. Thank you very much and by the way, if you haven’t subscribe to my channel, I would really appreciate it if you do so because it would really help . Thank you thank you thank you so much !🙂🙏 And by the way within the next couple of days, I am going to do a full restoration on a Bryston 4B where I will show people exactly how to do it.
@@Tinybench thank you for your response
@@Tinybench what's the rate for the full restoration?
Excellent work on your repair, but Krell build quality left when Dan Agostino was forced out it looks cheaply made to 90's Krell...smh.
I have the same amp. This thing sounds amazing. But I have a problem with it. I just replaced the outputs on the left channel which were dead. I checked everything around and everything is good. I managed to find original Hitachi outputs which are very expensive. I just tested it and they are still short. By testing it on the variac the DC comes out of the left channel. I also believe that the on/off switch is short because it is always powered.
Hello! Check all your diodes in the output stage. Also check your output drivers. Are you sure the old devices were shorted? And by the way, next time don’t go hunting for a specific transistor. Just get a modern equivalent from digikey or mouser. Regarding the switch, there should not be voltage going through the switch unless the separation capacitor across the switch is shorted. Or maybe the switch is stuck in the close position. If that was the case, you can probably take the switch apart, clean it and put it back together. Thank you for watching my video liking subscribing and commenting and let me know if you’re able to get it fixed. Did you connect the 0.1uF capacitors linking the anode to the first grid correctly (outer foil)? The yellow stripe on the original Pyramid capacitors does not indicate the outer foil.
Looks like a cheap computer case
Hello teammate! Thank you very much for watching liking commenting. I really appreciate it. If you haven’t please subscribe it would really help me. When it comes to Engineering, sometimes this things happen. To credit the Amplifier did sound beautiful and with the thermal paste, it should last a long time because the transistors will be able to dissipate heat properly. Teammate once again, thank you very much. I really appreciate it. 🙂🙏
Nice job. Where did you get the pot from? Thank you.
Hello teammate! Thank you for watching liking and commenting. I really appreciate it and if you haven’t please subscribe because it would really help me. That unit belongs to my friend Steve and he brought me the trim pot to replace. I will ask him if he remembers where he got it. Just so you know, the original trim pots can be rebuilt if a new one cannot be obtained but it is a little bit of a mission. Basically one can purchase tripods of the same value and replace the wipers as many of them are interchangeable. But like I said, it can be tricky as some of these trim pots are linear and some are logarithmic so everything must be matched. There’s actually four wipers on each of the units because the volume is changed at two different stages. And when you do fix it, just stop using that power switch because as I mentioned in the video, the tour applied ends up, ruining the structural integrity. Once again thank you very much! 🙂🙏
When I saw those nice beefy output transformers I figured this would turn out to be a good one. Were you using Nichicon capacitors for cathode bypass?
Yes, I was. First I use polar auto Capacitors. I put together adding up to 56 uf. I then change to one47 µF bipolar audio capacitor also from Nichicon which measured exactly 50.6 uf. That one made a dramatic difference. Thank you for watching liking and commenting. If you haven’t yet, please please please subscribe. Thank you once again ! 🙂🙏
Hello teammate! That’s right. The unit have really good transformers. Those were indeed Nichicon audio Capacitors. The green one is a bipolar audio capacitor. Hello team mate! Thank you so much! If you haven’t, please subscribe. I would really appreciate it. Yes, that was also the same value if I remember correctly. I use between 01 uf and .03 uf on larger amplifiers. I use failproof capacitors from WIMA that are guaranteed to never short. Once again, thank you very much.

Okay boss another question the .15 ohm 5 watt resistors in the output transistors on those big heat sinks. Have some way our of specs but a I can find are wirewound resistors now I have read that you shouldnt use wirewounds on common emitter amps. what are your thoughts, Mc2205
Hello teammate! Those are wirewound resistors. Is that your question? And are you sure that those are out of specs because I have never seen those get out of specs. Why won’t resistors are usually spot on? Make sure nothing is affecting your measurements. Good luck!
@@Tinybench I have one that tested over 9 0hms I know thats weird but the meter is accurate so I have no explanation.
@@shaknit 9 Ohms??? WTF!!!! Lift one leg off the PCB and then measure it. I really think something else is throwing off the measurements. By lifting one leg of the circuit. It will isolate the resistor, and I bet it will measure spot on. Teammate if you haven’t, please subscribe. I would really appreciate it. Thank you so much.
These are spectacular amplifier. Nice find!
Thank you very much teammate! It is spectacular indeed! 🙂🙏
This one of the best integrated tube amp ever. I hope you will enjoy. I have few eico, 2 HF-60 and the st-70 with the tuner and mpx. The last one is a bit noisy, too much front end gain, but I love it. Your (what I can see) mc250, is also my favourite solid state amplifier. The semi push pull and output transformer have a lot caractère and I that's what I like. I've rebuild and restored many amplifiers, juke-box, and what you said about the ground is very important, twisting heater wires closely together and putting those near the chassis really affect the hum as well. Nice restoration.
Hello team and thank you very much for watching my video liking, subscribing and commenting!!! I noticed that this units rely on the hardware to ground onto the unit. Overtime corrosion can occur, even though it is not visible. Cleaning under the hardware with a wire brush may help reduce noise. I am truly enjoying the Amplifier! This one has a special place in my heart !!! It’s hard to believe that he was literally a basket of metal parts!
@@TinybenchI would enjoy it too. These older eico unit have really good output transformer. You won't find such quality in modern équipement unless you pay multiple thousands. My HF-60 have peerless transformer and there's a good chance those in your unit are peerless too. Incredible. You can determine the foil side of the caps that are not marked with a oscilloscope. Just connect one side of cap to the positive of the oscillloscope, and hold the body of the cap in your hands, Do it with both side, the side with the most deflection is the foil side. I'm an older electronic technician and since 20 years, since consumer electronic isn't repairable anymore, I restore and rebuild vintage audio equipment.
8:50 - You are trying way too hard to "find something" here. The amplifier works and doesn't seem to have any significant issues. That's as good as it gets.
Hello teammate! Thank you very much for watching my video liking and commenting. Sorry I don’t understand what are you referring to. What is it that I am trying too hard to do in your opinion? What doesn’t seem to have any significant issues? Once again, thank you very much teammate!
@@Tinybench You're trying to describe the sound of the amplifier but that's something a working amp does not have. You probably need to do some ABX listening tests to understand this better.
@@marstedt I understand now! That was my personal subjective impression of how the amplifier sounds, and it should be taken with a grain of salt. Amplifier has a very distinctive sound to me and different properties. I was just trying to describe my subjective experience. Can you restore my Mac 2205 amp it's working so maybe wait till I have a problem where are you located so maybe drive it over to you it's a beast
Hello teammate! I am in Miami Florida. How about you? It’s never a good idea to wait until the unit goes bad due to the potential damaged involved. You could end up having to rebuild a burnt PCB, having to replace and match transistors, rectifiers, etc, and you could even damage a transformer which would be extremely difficult or even impossible to replace. It’s always better to practice preventive maintenance. There’s also quite a dramatic improvement in sound quality when these units are restored using certain capacitors. 🙂🙏
Excellent work on a legend of an amp
Thank you very much teammate! 🙂🙏
Very nice video! I own an Hf-81 and is sonic bliss. One question though, is it a reason why you removed the preamp tube shields? I see also that two of the 12ax7 have rubber rings and in the “original form” they don’t even have metallic shields. Thanks !
Hello teammate! Thank you for watching my video! I removed the shield temporarily while I was working on the unit. I put them back on after because they shield, electromagnetic noise. The rubber rings are for microphonic. They prevent vibrations from making the glass vibrate. I personally don’t like to use those unless necessary because they interfere with free convection, which is when hot air rises and draws cool air in. Like a hot air balloon, air in contact with the glass races and creates an earth flow that helps the tube dissipate heat. Therefore, I would only use it if I have a problem with microphonic in a tube. Microphonics is when mechanical vibrations of the tube can be heard coming out of the speakers. Please be on the lookout. I am in the process of editing and shortly posting a new basket case HF 81 video.🙂🙏
@@Tinybench thank you very much for the thorough answer! Looking forward to watching that next video :)
I wound up saving a couple McIntosh MC1502 amps from the curbside on their way to the dump. They were all hacked together like they'd been worked on by a complete novice much like the Marantz amps you worked on in this video. Almost every single tube was blown because the heater voltage was way too high. Someone had replaced the rectifier tube with a bridge rectifier without accounting for the extra power. It was expensive to replace them but worth it. After replacing most of the components they turned out to be some of the cleanest sounding amps I've ever heard.
Wait a minute teammate I am dumbfounded. Are you sure you got the right model number the MC 1502 is the new 150 W x 2 tube amplifier for Mcintosh which cost $11,000. Regardless of the model number, I don’t understand how someone can throw away a Macintosh Amplifier. I found a fisher, 500 C on a dumpster myself. I’ll dumpster dive any day for an amplifier lol. On a different note, when I see horrible work like that, I think that is not a matter of knowledge, but a matter of having the desire to do a good job. I consider myself a novice in the process of learning something new every day and the reason why I started working on my own equipment was because the professionals in my city, which is Miami are absolutely horrible butchers!
