Riding Bean Is Stupid and I Love It
There are lots of retro anime that delve into deep philosophical questions, explore the meaning of life, or explore the human condition. Riding Bean is... not one of those. It is stupid in a good way, and I love it for that.

Was I Wrong About the Escaflowne Movie?
Просмотров 2,1 тыс.6 месяцев назад
After reading through the comments on my previous video, "So, I Finally Watched the Vision of Escaflowne", I decided to re-visit the Escaflowne film with a different perspective. Also, I am aware that the movie is just titled "Escaflowne." In this video I refer to it as "Escaflowne: the movie" and "The Vision of Escaflowne movie." That's just the way it is folks.
Gunbuster is Rad!

I'm just a man, standing in front of an internet, asking it to bring back the word "rad." Also, I talk about why I love Gunbuster. Is it cheesy? Yes! But considering it was partially inspired by Top Gun, it is the best kind of cheesy.

Macross II: Lovers Again - Not Really A Review, I Just Love It
Просмотров 4 тыс.Год назад
As the title says, this isn't so much a review as it is me proclaiming that I enjoy this OVA. There is no deep discussion of the Macross lore, and I oversimplify the story elements to an almost embarrassing degree. That isn't the point - the point is, this OVA deserves a little more love than it gets. Or so say I, the one drinking the nostalgia Kool-Aid.
So, I Finally Watched: The Vision of Escaflowne

After over 20 years of ignoring this show, I finally decided to give it a try. They say you never get a second chance at a first impression. That may be true, but this show is proof that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover... or rather, an anime by its Fox Kids-ness.

I love that you watched the original series from Fox, gave yourself time to digest and think about it, Then you watched the movie. I agree the movie is different from the series but it is also still very good. I also like that you took the criticism from the comments into account and decided to do this video. Good on you man. Made a fan outta me with this one.👍

I discovered Escaflowne through the movie first. Without having context of the series, I absolutely enjoyed the movie. The story, the characters, the animation, and the music! Only after having watched the movie, naturally, I went and watched the series. I can see why folks who have watched the series first would have treated the movie as such. The series was fantastic...not perfect as it has its flaws. The movie is just the same. It was fantastic...not perfect as it, too, has its flaws. Treat them separate and you'll enjoy both. Great review!

One of my more favorite movies to rewatch every now and then. If youre a fan of the series, both mediums have been out long enough to appreciate both. The effort put in both projects are undeniable. I just wanted to say that its funny how you featured him rolling a ridiculous distance, i thought i was the only one who noticed. Haha! But also, im obviously biased but i hope you didnt watch the movie in dub. I appreciate a good dub but subs i feel like will always be traditionally better.

Macross II may not have featured Kawamori's mecha designs (although I think the Valk II was designed by the same guy who designed the Zeta Gundam IIRC), it did feature Mikimoto's character designs. I have this OVA series on Japanese laserdisc with its glorious artwork. It's way better than Macross 7. I was literally ROFLing at the sight of people piloting Valkyries via guitar strings.

Dammit. who cares. Like you said, it is all for good fun. All that canon crap is irrelevant. I started my journey with ROBOTECH! Then Souther Cross was kind of a mess and I still love that one too. Finally. The New Generation closed the whole saga (as far as the American Series concern) All of the sudden I've learned about MACROSS! which was more interesting, then Do You Remember Love and all of the rest after that. So what if any of these shows failed when it came to its story, production or even music. We can't change any of that. Just keep going on and enjoy them in our personal way. Whatever makes us happy

To me the movie is a refelction of what Escaflowne would have been if it was "more mature" just an edgy mess that completely misses the entire point of Escaflowne and takes away everything that made it good because blood, violence, and cool boys are "better".

Watching this makes me want to break out my badass Vision of Escaflowne wallscroll I have put in storage. I watched it back in high school on FOX then finally got a nice DVD box set in college and got my good buddy into it as well. Good times. I really wish the kids that grew up on The Big Three (One Piece, Naruto, & Bleach) could take the time to go back and watch some of the anime that predates them by a bit that isn't Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, or Neon Genesis Evangelion. I'm also lumping Sailor Moon, Ghibili films, Dragon Ball, and Berserk in there as well. Here's a list of some of the stuff that I watched back in the day that might be worth a look. They're not all life-changing experiences but they're enjoyable nonetheless. I've tried to keep it to late 90s to mid 2000s. Also, there aren't any movies like Graveyard of the FIrelies, Armitage the 3rd, or Ninja Scroll. There are some OVAs though. It's really such a shame the movie's plot and pacing were done so dirty, because I far FAR prefer the designs of the movie vs the show (especially the character designs, I always hated how Allen and Folken looked in the series, Hitomi's hideous pink dress, etc). Everything is so artfully done from the backgrounds to the action scenes, I especially love the way they were able to convey moody lighting in the cel paintings. The balance between animating both intense gore and soft emotion is chef's kiss. Just sucks so bad that the pacing is DOGWATER. Great example: Hitomi has been on Gaea for basically about a day, she hasn't really been introduced to anyone other than Millerna. She meets Merle right after, who exposition dumps and Hitomi learns about Van for the first time. Then she gets kidnapped, Van goes from being indifferent to immediately springing into action. He even calls her by her name?? I guess we have to assume Millerna told him off screen in the few hours before the kidnapping? The after being saved from falling by Van, she's professing about how much she cares about him and doesn't want him to die??? Girl you just met and he literally threatened to kill you yesterday. Oh and special shoutout to the whiplash I felt when Van tells Hitomi that his brother literally murdered his whole family and is trying to conquer the land... and she's saying how they are so similar because she is depressed. Like, girl......... Contrast that to the excellent slow build up of their relationship over the series (which to be fair I have issues with, way too much faffing about with the Allen obsession love triangle, her and Van's romance should have really started developing after he saves her with CPR/she literally brings him back from the valley of death, instead of the second to last episode, ugh). I would've loved to see not a movie but an OVA series in the same style as the movie, with more of a mix of the movie and show. Keep the rebel pirate group, hot-headed Van, Folken as the main villain, but bring back Hitomi's clairvoyant powers and have the plot revolve around changing fate/destiny instead of whatever tf they were trying to do with the Escaflowne armor as a plot device. It would be interesting to have Hitomi's suicidality stem from her constantly having terrible visions, which makes her want to disappear (and also provides reason to why Folken takes her to Gaea). Aaanyways. Throwing this comment into the ether to whoever is still thinking about this show/movie from 20+ years ago. But it feels good to get that off my chest!

I finally got the chance to watch it recently in 2024 and yeah the first thing that came to my mind was 'this is pretty much a DnD session'. They have warrior guy, warrior/mage elf, mage, cleric, rogue, and dwarf fighter. They clearly power up through the episodes too especially Parn, without it really being shown on screen as if they gained levels. Magic has casting time for the most part, and they fight dragons goblins ogres etc... Not that this is a bad thing, modern fantasy anime are almost all isekais with ever more unhinged premises by comparion. Some of them are still good but most are 'wtf is going on here' or give the MC world ending powers by episode 3 which make everything happening later on irrelevant. I thought there was gonna be more episodes and char developpement tho. They speed from one location and to the next fight really fast. Which also sounds DnD like I guess.

If you are interested, ROLW Chronicles of the Heroic Knight might be what you are looking for in terms of more episodes and fleshing out some of the characters. The production quality of the show is not nearly as good as the ROLW OVA, but it does continue the story in a more "faithful" way to the source material (the RPG replays/light novels). Chronicles of the Heroic Knight takes place after episode 8 of the OVA and replaces episodes 9-13.

besides these points wich i agree with i could not ever watch it dubbed, much of the natural voice acting is lost and the drama falls flat on its face in how they deliver the lines...Sure there is millions of worse dubs but man it takes me out of the experience. Also i remember this movie was a big deal when it was on its way (got hyped via Newtype and other magazines leading up to the release) and i was pretty happy with the result mostly with the animation and new designs, but as a story the TV.series is the best. One issue with the original VHS or DVD release was it had some issues with dark scenes as most of the details got lost like in that first fight scene...I wonder if the new editions is better? I guess they are
