Making Money Off of Junk Wood - Twent Buck is Twenty Bucks
I would recommend Black plastic to increase the temp during the day when the sun shines. Maybe making the tote more airtight would help to force the overheated air down through the wood. Also, if you had the bottom opening smaller it would be more pressurized depending on the size of the intake of the fan. Just my 2 cents :)
Thanks, good input
Five percent difference in four weeks seems legit for a process that takes months and sometimes years.
Maybe I was on track then?!
One thing that I can see in your IBC is you have a center row of wood that blocks airflow through it. If you stack wood really tight like that it wont dry as well no matter how hot it gets, its the air moving through a pile that dries it out. Just my two cents, its worked for me for many years. Best of luck with the solar kiln. I stack my green wood in a ##### pattern so air can easily go through it. Once it is dry I stack it tight to save space.
Nice
Admitting that a design doesn't work is tough, but super helpful to see what doesn't work! Thanks for trying this design out for us!
I’m going to keep at it
It would probably dry faster with just the solar fans blowing on the wood.
It just may
Cool design. I have always found that the wood on top of a pile outside tends to be a little bit drier (the pieces that get better sun exposure). Interested to check out pieces that maybe only had just the end grain on one end but you may have done this by digging into the pile a bit (37-38% versus 30%) but it's hard to tell as a viewer the way the video is edited/shot. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for the comment
Too bad you were also sucking the moisture out of the ground
This was probably a flaw I didn’t take into consideration
So basically the same.
Sort of
If I took 5% of your pay you wouldn't agree it's the same. Does it warrant him making an abundance of solar kilns just like this prototype? Nope. But the wood in the kiln did read as dryer and it gives promise to work out the flaws.
@@caldonnox lol
If I'm seeing this wrong, I apologise.. But from what I do see - A glaringly obvious design fault that I can see immediately(IMHO), is your air Inlet is at the top, and your outlet is also at the top. I would have had my Inlet as far down the bottom as I could get it, and opposite to the outlet. [Edit after watching the start of the video again: it appears to me like there is only one vent, meaning there isn't really an Inlet or an outlet. This is even worse than I had thought. It appears to be more like a sauna can a kiln. The fan should be attached to a cowl and plastic fitted so it is positively either pushing air out or sucking air in; with the other air Inlet/outlet right at the bottom of the wood pile]. also surely the wood from the bottom of both stacks would (I imagine) read differently from the wood you've chosen from the top but that's just speculation - I have zero experience in this area. An afterthought: Also I imagine black plastic would heat up more than clear too.
Thanks . Looking at doing another design. Stay tuned!
Man you need to get you some detachable forks for that bucket on your tractor so you can move those stacks around lol
I actually do have forks. My 2025r cannot lift a full tote, half of one though!
Great educational video. I’m stacking my wood in an open field with lots of sunshine and a constant wind. It’s drying fast! On another note, how did you get ahold of the Eastonmade shirt? I want a couple!
Sounds like a great setup. I received the shirt at the international firewood expo in Ohio. Eastonmade had their equipment there on display.
@@offthetrailsoutdoors1169 That’s where I picked up my Ultra! I’ll have to call them. Thanks!
@@simplelifewithrobertpusate294 how’s the Ultra? Lives up to hype?
Congrats for your prototype!! I really enjoy that you are doing a low cost version of solar kiln (most RUclips channel show more expensive ones). I did one similar to yours, and I have some experience to share: be careful with moisture from the ground, I put some black plastic on my version. I also put black plastic in the front wall (the temperature increase a lot with more black surface), maybe your system is not enough to remove moisture, you can check pile the logs with some space between them) Greetings from Brazil!
Thanks for the comment. I appreciate your support! Cheers!
reviews on other splitters say when the fluid gets foamy, it doesnt run efficiently. is that the case with this one?
I have not had that happen. I only have a few hours , one month of ownership. Where are you seeing that at?
@@offthetrailsoutdoors1169 The clear pipe. the hydraulic fluid, doesnt always look like that?
Yes that’s the hydroponic fluid. Yeah I think it does

Do you have the trans in neutral & loader bucket off the ground so you can move the tractor backward using the backhoe Buck to push you to the rear when it’s time to move?
Yes , neutral and the bucket is not pushed into ground.
Nice, quick demo of back blade use. Looks like you had all the scarifier “teeth” raised up.
First I went through with the teeth down. Is just using the box to pull the dirt out .
Where do you stand with the current state of John Deere? I love there equipment and always heard great things about them....
Love it. I have had zero issues. I’ve been running my 2025r since October of 2020.
@@offthetrailsoutdoors1169 thanks for sharing!
Sure

Great experiment, but you didn't give the moisture any where to go. I'd cut an 8" flap in one of the gable ends and roll up the bottom of the opposite wall to get a cross current through the stack. Keep up the good work.
Thanks. Stayed tuned !
Love the box blade action and the dirt work. Great content and video!
Thank you. It’s a great piece of equipment
17:31 Did it spray hydraulic fluid here because of too much struggle?
One of the fittings came loose . Had to tighten
Not exactly the safest way to cut splits. I own one of the largest firewood companies in the South and have two Super Splitters (commercial grade kinetic versions of same style you have) and I'd never allow any of my employees to keep their hand in front of the ram as it's moving forward. While we run a significant volume (about 150 cords a week) and the chances are we'll have issues more often than you the main point is you will have issues eventually. Those splitters are notoriously dangerous and have a tendency to "kick" wood. When that happens you've got no idea what direction that piece of is going to go and where your hand will go if you happen to be holding onto it. We've be fortunate enough not to have anything more than a few bruises from flying wood but one of my fellow producers in TX has had several severed fingers. I've got a Bonfire sized Solo and we use pizza splits 8" cuts that work great. Not sure I'd use the smaller version except maybe for camping and smores but I might get one to give it a shot. Be safe.
Thanks for the comment. I just bought a Huskee 20 ton hydrolic . I agree, this isn’t the best splitter for smalls ! What’s the name of your company? Sounds like you’re doing really well, congratulations!
Other comments mentioned the cart from bxpanded. I got the cart also for my 260. Really enjoy being able to push the backhoe around in the shed out of the way. Also don’t have to worry about hydraulics sagging For hooking up I just wheel the backhoe over to the tractor way easier than backing the tractor up to the backhoe. Didn’t time myself but I’m sure it’s faster with the cart.
I may have to look into that. Where did you get it from? Cost?
@@offthetrailsoutdoors1169 I ordered mine through bxpanded’s website. Paid around $220 or so, that was 6 years ago. I had it in a few days, all I had to do was bolt on the caster wheels and she’s ready to go
Looking into this
Very nice 👍 keep cuttin'!
Thanks man! You as well

Brother, you should’ve considered a Super Split. 😀 At least you would’ve gained speed and efficiency,…especially since you got a new splitter without a log lift. Nevermind 😂, I saw that you have the DR splitter. That’s the sucky thing about shorts,…they don’t have a post date on them, lol.
Yes I have a RapidFire. I got this one for breaking down round that a knotty. Stay tuned for the long format video .
nice. why not black plastic no fan?
I just wanted to try some things. I have another design I want to try next!
What part of PA are you in? I’d like to start building one in 2 years in NEPA
Western PA
What’s it do keep the moister out?
Using the sun and air flow to take out the moisture faster!
I’ve always wanted to try this with black plastic and a very tall 8-inch duct on the top painted black. The superheated air should initiate convection with adjustable intake vents at the bottom, rather than relying on solar power.
I may try black plastic next time
How much was the property?

I noticed that your mower arms were hanging very low. They will raise and lower with the 3 point so you need to make sure you have your mower cut high set so that they won’t lower when you lower the 3 point and get damaged

What size drop did u buy
It’s a 2” and I think 2 5/16 “ ball heads
Like others have said, need air flow and a way for the condensation to escape.
I agree! Thanks
Your kiln will also trap any moisture eminating from the ground. Lay plastic on the ground, place the tote on the tarp, then apply the suggestions others have made about ventilation.

What’s brand & model is your moisture meter?

Thanks for sharing your experience. I do think your idea will work, but you need to let air exhaust. If you put some solar run fans as someone mentioned in comments or even cut an exhaust hole on each side to allow the air to escape with the moisture on the high part of the side panels. Maybe raise the bottom plastic at 6 inches- a foot. The heat will still remain to help the drying process. Good luck on working on this project. I appreciate your efforts and don’t want you to feel that I am criticizing your efforts. Have a great week.
Not upset by the comments at all. I appreciate them! I’ve got some things up my sleeve for part 2!
Airflow is very important. The humidity needs to be able to escape. Vents at the peak and or solar fans would help to evacuate the moisture.
You read my mind. Model 2.0 coming soon!
Was hoping it would work for ya but air flow is very important . Gota have air in and air out . Your set up is very similar to drying in a greenhouse only missing part is an exhaust fan add that and it will be a winner .
Thanks for the support. Stay tuned, already made some upgrades.
I wonder about just a clear roof, that way it gets hotter but still is wide open on the sides
I’ve got 2.0 coming this week ! :)
Maybe get one of those cheap remote thermometers to put in each tote to check the temp

Is that a bush hog squealer ?
Yeah it’s a brush hog
Very interesting to see how this works. I think you need to have a vent to let the moisture escape. The wood may start to mold without letting it escape. Maybe do as Allen family firewood suggested raise the bottom up to let some air escape. I just subbed to your channel.
Thank you so much. I’ll keep you posted
