People can be dogmatic and unwilling to consider that their beliefs could be wrong since it can be mentally difficult to accept that many of the decisions you made throughout your life are based on a false belief so you dismiss anything that can challenge it. It was also difficult to change my prespective from just looking at the raw dollar amount and instead think about value/dollar.

Personality is not a catch all term. Often these guys are more confident and funny and bold, even if they're not very considerate or thoughtful or apologetic. Let's not just simplify everything into "nice" and "asshole". Also, nobody needs surgery unless it's clinical like a cleft jaw. If you get a haircut that fits your face, perhaps contacts, work out, it adds so many points to attractiveness

This scarcity mindset is common for the working class of our parents’ generation… they’re traumatized in a way that’s foreign to us. There’s no argument we can make that would change their minds, so it’s best to not try to justify your purchases at all. Your best chance of changing your dad’s perspective is to treat him to something nice once you’re in a financially stable situation. Otherwise, just keep doing you. There are advantages to penny pinching, but as you pointed out- there is a point of diminishing returns that comes with it.

It’s good to spoil yourself sometimes but saving is also nice if you have plans.

My mom also instilled that on me. She would rather choose the cheapest options but lasting only 2 weeks. Rather than the expensive version which will last years

South Korea was a poor country from 1953 to 1979. I wonder if your father grew up when South Korea was poor, It would explain his attitude of mind. I heard people were starving to death in South Korea in the mid 50s. That level of poverty leaves long lasting painful memories that cause people to be hesitant to spend money that's sometimes impossible to undo.

High quality is nice, but at the end of the day, you get bored with it just like the cheaper stuff. It's best to spend your money on things that appreciate or holds its value.

I think your father taught you well.

My family bought a fixer upper house and didn’t want to spend alot of money on workers, so they’d hire one guy to do everything. In the end they probably could have spent $20,000-$40,000 on a group of workers but they prob spent $100,000+ for an unfinished house because he was the cheaper and worse option. They also always get crappy used vehicles that keep breaking down, instead of spend more on a new vehicle. Sometimes you need to pay more the first time so you don’t have to pay way more, in the long run, along with the stress of everything breaking and wasted time haha

Your father had that mindset probably because you guys grew up lower middle class. Speaking from experience, yes money can buy you more but if you don’t make a lot you have to pick things to spend less on to meet other goals
