Great interview, I'm hoping that there are more to come! I really like when Culpfiction said he wanted to make a map that fits the post apocalyptic theme of Stormgate that's less cuddly than the other maps. I'm loving everything about Ruination! Keep up the great work, Beo!
Oh I am absolutely into this being a regular series. Now my initial thoughts before watching the video : I really like the Ruination map and would love if going forward Stormgate had a good mix of traditional sc2 like maps, and more ruination like maps. See when I look at this map - I see a sprawling city in the middle that the player armies contest. Of course a lot of that is my imagination - but it is very distinct from the viewer perspective. And I would LOVE maps going forward leaned even harder into that. Warcraft 3 had plenty of maps that visually told some story, they had themed mobs, even obstacles - this is great. And most importantly interestin to the viewer, because on a pro level ever millimeter of map placement can make a difference, but for viewers - every SC 2 map is the same with the exception of abyssal rift where bodies float upward (and it was very popular) I'd love to see more involved maps, with hostile mobs that serve as an obstacle to the player army, not just exist to be farmed. If there's mix of traditional and wild maps and a veto system on top everyone will hopefully be able to get what they consider best
I made a video a while back that made a case for a 9 map pool because of how it would enable weird maps in a competitive sense. I'm totally down for this - and one of the best parts of new RTS games is that the map meta hasn't settled down into the same thing all over again!

The Stormgate music is too loud and very distracting. This is interesting content and doesn't need any extra stuff to keep people around. Just saying for future reference. :)
New dead game
Loved to head Chris thoughts. I'm specially glad they insist on trying older ideas again (like Jagged Maw) now that unit and economy design were heavily changed since. It bodes well for their vision that they're not panicking and throwing out the baby with the bath water, and being open-minded with design.

Personally, I don't like the design in the creep camps. Why do the camps look like just pillars that give a bonus without any meaning? Why not make the treatment camp look like a medical center, a resource extraction camp like a kind of drilling machine? I think it would make the game much more attractive to regular players.
Probably because some of that is placeholder. We know they plan on taking another pass at creeps before release, and the campaign has a different asset for healing shrines

yeah, i think some of these tree backdoors, like the back path on ruination, would work better as destructible rocks attackable by any unit. I think you need something there to slow them down, but the current "bring my worker across the entire map" thing is not great to me.
I really really don't like creeps. Yes, I will appear in the comments section of every discussion about them to express my distaste.

I like the way this map feels but the back paths have never been used in my experience, also the healing flowers are broken on this map. They are untargetable.
That's definitely something that will get fixed - devs have it fixed but it's not worth a deploy on its own. Should be fine with 0.2.0 to my understanding

It sounded fine when I tested, and I unfortunately hadn't gone and recorded on multiple tracks so I couldn't balance it out better once the recording was done. I'll fix it for next time!

I'm going to say that I hard disagree that they should develop they should have developed Vangard/Infernal more before putting in Celestials or any other faction. In a game of this sort. The more you develop things, the harder it becomes to add/change anything else as the more of your design becomes dependent on the things that are already there. It's far better to get more things onto the table undeveloped so that you know what you have a better idea of what you are building towards than it is to build something, let it solidify and then try to fit something else to it, especially anything as drastically different than the celestials. Imagine trying to design a new faction for either Starcraft that is up to those games standards of balance in all three non-mirror matchups without being able to change anything about the other factions that would affect their other two non-mirror matchups negatively. Other RTS can get away with adding factions later because their factions aren't as asymmetric. As far as I'm concerned if they don't have a 4th faction soon (as in within the scope of the current roadmap), it is unlikely that it will ever have one without it being a disaster. And I do think they should have aimed to have 4 factions on the table as soon as possible even if unpolished. I prefer Stormgate (to the point where even if it dies I'm never going back to SC2) but I feel anyone who says that it presents itself like as a cheaper Starcraft clone and that's not an amazing pitch to those who either prefer some element of SC2 (whatever element that may be). Having an extra faction above Starcraft isn't entirely the same as saying you aren't a clone but it is a pretty good indication that you have an ambition to be more and if nothing else they'll have run out of Starcraft factions to claim/believe the new faction is just a rip-off of which will hopefully encourage them to take some time to try and figure out what it actually is. To give a contrasting point, I don't think it's necessary to have tier 3 for all factions immediately and even that it could be better to hold off on designing it. Every match has an early and most have a midgame and it's very important to start figuring out what the dynamics/balance of those is and fixing any problems before you build on them. Once you have something more solid you can implement your tier 3 specifically to even out issues with how the midgame shakes out. Of course if you do this and then add a new faction, then you have an entirely different early game/midgame to worry about and your lategame is no longer as open to mitigate and may even exasperate any problems

The creep camps on the edges tested the players causing fights all over the map. This type of map should be in the rotation absolutely but not the entire map pool.

Let me know why this wouldn’t be good: A tier 3 upgrade that gives flame imps a small leap/dash that can close small gaps of running away enemies.
And/or an upgrade that gives 50% resource cost of an imp returned when exploded.
They already do that! When within leash range, they leap on top of units and explode (kinda like how shadowflyers work)

Though he's a scholar and a gentleman, Artosis's take on "no creeps" doesn't fit very much to the direction Frost Giant has taken. I believe it'd be a hard no for most SC fans to see heroes in 1v1 Stormgate games. I'm not a map designer and I don't claim to have a perfect grasp on intricate RTS mechanics but, instead of capturable points, Frost Giant can turn creep camps into neutral unit/mercenary stores, where you can buy certain neutral units (like V5 rocket, or similar mercenaries in Warcraft 3). That way, rather than one side having passive heal/speed/income bonus, they'd have alternate, map dependant units that they can use to flavor things up. An alternate thing would be adding some creep points that work like the Relics in Dawn of War 1, which allows you to reach the final tech of your faction. Integrating such points would force the players to defend/engage in mid-late game to access/deny higher tech to the enemy. In any case, I'm still having fun watching Stormgate matches and still hope that it will find its footing in the future.
I think the big thing we're missing is the nebulous future creep rework. There are a bunch of cool ideas (what if we had a temporary production-speed booster like a solar habitat that you take from a creep camp and have to escort back to your base to set up? etc) that are possible in the future but not implemented. I think their second pass will be a lot closer to what we're looking for
Dude, you are starting to sound delusional. I wanted this game to be good, it just isn't. You are clearly being paid by FrostGiant to shill, or you are completely delusional. We are not all wrong and you and Frost Giant are right. How is it possible to have so many issues after Beta and Early Access? How many things have Frost Giant completely ignored even after 3 early access patches?? You're insinuation that these games are interesting, the game player statistics don't lie - 67 players atm. Partings games were all crap in that tournament, which one were you watching?? You finally admit the early game is boring, how about the middle and the endgame?? Boring as hell. What do you think they can change at this stage to rescue this turd? Artosis is trying to come up with constructive possible changes, as he recognises the units and fundamentals are not possible to change. Everything has been half-baked or ignored. I saw another streamer say Frost Giant said they expected the early release to get panned. As he rightly then pointed out, why the hell would anyone release a game which they know is bad and which has piss poor balance from the outset? Its literal lunacy. Its dead dude, get over it...
Tbh I haven't seen either your or Artosis's videos but if I were to make a change, I would remove the respawning of the creeps. Of course you would make an exception for the siege camp (which you could just remove the control point for, because it doesn't make much sense having a control point to begin with). Essentially you would have still have the same early game, but in the mid-game you get to make the strategic decision of defending/taking these points from the enemy. The current system with control points just doesn't make much sense to me since you have no incentive to defend them, due to A) Already having a majority of the benefit gained from them and B) it inevitably being reverted to neutral anyways.
What if capture points were more powerful and taking them required buildings? Give the players something meaningful to fight over.

Infiltrate stealing money from effigies (and in general) feels really janky. Maybe it should steal a portion of the cost of the building if the building dies? That way it’s still flavourful but doesn’t cause as much frustration/power spike as stealing directly from the opponent’s bank?
I'm generally somewhat ok with stealing money from town halls - it makes sense there. But stealing from effigies and other minor buildings does feel weird. The shakedown is real
@@BeoMulf Maybe the justification is that the effigies have symbolic value as art, which depending on what the infernals think, might make them MORE valuable than an actual structure? XD
Man, this stuff really needed to be fleshed or privately. But also it's cool to hear about game design. As a spectator we need more content.
When this game makes no fun on plane green grass open maps. It will also make no fun on each other map. So you can continue talking on specifics like how one map is build, but in the end it will not solve the basic problems with Stormgate.

I think was was really highlighted from arty's stream was that the game isnt engaging, like its all very kite or don't kite for vast stretches of gameplay, there is no baneling power spike, there is no widow mine landing on a big group/oracle. There is no thing that you have to respond too, the only thing that was clear was that early teching on a small map means celes is OP. against vangaurd, infernal can get enough stuff to attack air early that it isnt really a problem, but vangaurd has a lot of anti air problems early. (which is why they changed the morph core) Long story short, the problem isnt map size creep camps or anything else, its just not that engaging to play, until you have 120 realistically 200+ army supply. Thats when you can actually get to the good units and see value for your decisions. Otherwise its just a build order loss or just a boring game of I run when chased, when he stops chase I shoot, when he chase I run.
something interesting, the vanguard is the only faction that can destroy theyr own building and get the 100% of the resource back, so it could be a good strategy to build sentrys at camps, capture them and destroys the trees that are in the way, and get the resource back

Going the right directtion with heavily nerfing Brute and feinds. That sht was ridiculously op. Now they need to nerf Vanguard.
My fav RTS to play is War3, but i dont like how creeps feel in Stormgate. Creeping is a chore and the respawning creeps adds to that. The impact is also too low to encourage creepjacking because it will only ever be a temporary buff, compared to the permamnency of hero levels and items in Warcraft 3. As for the map size, i agree it should be smaller and less complex to start out so we can figure out the meta and balance faster, but also just because max supply games every game means that the early game is inconsequential. We need there to be a threat of game over in early game and mid game or it's just boring to watch like many current SC2 matchups.
Well, good news on the maxed supply stuff - I'd say that that is maybe a third of the games I cast? Maybe even less
@BeoMulf That still feels way too often for how early and unbalanced the game is. I would love to see less worker harass and more skirmishes than in modern SC2 as well. I think the early game skirmishes are very interesting and more of it would be better.

Creeps are fine for 3v3 mode (which I'll never play). Keep my 1v1s creep free!
