tread carefully Ashton we need you
Excellent work keep them coming, stay safe 🤔watch your footing.
Thank you, I will cheers Alan !
keep up the good work
Nice seeing you and wet dog again exploring our industrial past when we were great! Keep up the good work boys.
Be careful Aston it looks slippery poor you 🎉🎉😢😮😂
The old station building on the opposite side from Station House, is still complete. You need to go into the small industrial estate, called New Lodge Foundry. There are more modern industrial buildings, but you can clearly see the Station building made out of stone. Its now a powder coating buisness. If you went onto New Lodge Foundry, youd easily see it. Im sure the guys would let you have a look around.
@@JohnA27 might go back and see ! Thank you !
@exploringthepastandthepres9793 no problems pal, I know the area pretty well, so it's nice to see it getting up onto RUclips. Good job 👍
Im so glad you have done this area as its always had my interest, i would love to see the old Crossley mill tunnel and slope dug back out again.
@@octopus680 ah is that on the maps ?? Sounds interesting that tunnel ?😃
The "Stones" on the large scale plans are a line of marker stones to show the line of the north edge of the tunnel underneath. Presumably they didn't want either excessive loading or digging above the tunnel arch.
Often wondered why the little cafe at the bottom of Clifton Common was called "Pickle Bridge" now I know it was to do with the name of the railway line. Sadly it has closed down now but they had some great pictures inside of the bridge that stood just by the cafe.
No way I went to get a sandwich whilst I was exploring that line and the lady who was running told me she witnessed the viaduct being demolished the photos in the video was from the shop she let me use!
Always wondered about this building so it was a nice video to see and learn about it. Thank you and fantastically out together.
@@The_minas_the_man thank you ! Glad you liked it ! Done all the line down to Halifax if you havnt seen the episodes ! Thanks again !
Thanks so much ashton 😮😮
Thanks man appreciate it
Ive walked past ovenden station so many times and didnt realise how much is left in the debris. They should preserve the station before it fall to bits
Enjoyed that mate.... well done.... Glad people were helpful.... keep doing the cracking fading in picture features cheers
Thank you pal ! Yes very helpful ! All of them throughout !
That arch/hole in the wall by the road with pipes and a valve looks like it might have been space for an outside toilet maybe
Overden station used to be a scrap yard in the 80’s to the late 90’s, I spent many a day there pulling bits out of cars with may farther and then we paid for them in the old station house, Also used to explore the area with my friends, I now live up the road from the station in one of the Victorian houses that were built for the mill workers.
That railway van body is a standard 12ton ventilated body, probably for carrying fruit or general freight goods. The frame was angle iron with ply wood sides and doors
@@RaggyAl1971 thank you ! Explains it more !
Great series of videos
Thanks!
Great footage. I grew up around here and its fascinating to watch.
@@danielmanley6043 thanks man ! Glad it brings back memories ! I’ve done some More episodes from Halifax in series if you havnt seen 😃 also part 6 to holmfield soon to come
@@exploringthepastandthepres9793 I used to "play out" on "the track" in the eighties. From what I remember there is an old gravestone on the opposite side of the tunnel nearest Ovenden Station next to the track. I believe it is from somebody who died working on the railways from years ago, from what I can remember but it's a long time ago so I can't 100% recall. It will be on the farmer's land. Might be worth investigating if you've not already done so in Part 6. Looking forward to seeing it anyway 👍🏻
one manc did this 3 years ago.
@@Teddystream. he certainly did I’ve seen it Not sure if he went into the station building tho 🎈 🎈🎈
Incredible video!!! Always wanted to no how the station building looked inside
@@iangardner-xw9tg thank you! Yes ! It was good to be able to have a look and picture how would have been operating!
@ i live in rugby and all the great central walk here is very interesting
@ thank you ! I think I’ve done a tunnel near there Morcott ? May be a bit further out I want to get down your side and do some old lines
@@exploringthepastandthepres9793 yeah you should lots of old lines around here 3 disused lines in Rugby
you certainly are uncovering some gems Ashton
@@a11csc thanks man yeah ! Was fortunate to get a look - in 😃 ! It was a big gem this
I always really enjoy your videos. Thank you for all you great work.
@@urielp911 thank you 😀✅
As always an excellent history lesson with some great accurate research, good footage 👏👏👍
@@Tanks_at_22 thanks Alan !
Thanks again
Lived on Nettleton Road growing up and played on the track just off Jagger Lane for years, it looks like it has been built up a fair bit now and you could get under the bridge it was a fair way down to the bottom.
Brilliant footage pal👍 love the old map pictures great channel keep safe mate looking forward to your next adventure 👍👍👍👍
@@jedibob173 thank you very much ! I’ve done the series from Halifax on the first 3 parts Then part 5 and 6 to come in the next coming weeks ! Thanks for watching 😀
It was never intended to be filled in, but due to the council's mess up with the road design and the inadvertent realignment of the road, it now became too close to the tunnel roof to be thought safe. So it was decided to fill in the southern end with a very weak sand/cement mixture, first tipped and bulldozed in, then near the top and not enough headroom for the bulldozer, it was blown in.
Well done mate .. keep the content coming !!! goodman
Good video 👍🏻 , luckily managed to take mi lad on the heritage railway on their xmas express they used to do , was brilliant for the kids … but someone was very eager to rip all the lines out asap after covid making it almost impossible to it ever coming back , as you saw nothing has been done since , pure sacrilige
Great video mate! I was in the other end recently, but I've always assumed this end was flooded, and it looked too boggy to even risk climbing down!
It was quite dry in either end ! Luckily it was a hot day ! So it was dry as a bone ! I’ve heard it can get bad up to like 12 feet in bad weather ! Dangerous but good tunnel this one !
another great vid boys
I was the engineer overseeing the filling of the sout end of the tunnel during the A629 improvements. This was necessary due to a colossal mistake of the council engineering department in try to design the road improvements "on the cheap" rather than employ a professional consultant, as used on the A58 ring road. It cost the rate payers untold extra costs on this and other consequences of this penny pinching exercise.
Thank you ! 😀 Good to know more in depth information I didn’t read about 😃
The air shafts were called the pepperpots. Belongs to the scouts on Mapperly plains. Pepperpot scouts next to Arnold Lane.
@@chester5194 thanks 😃
I used to play in this tunnel when i was 10 years old back in the 80's. There was a rope swing nearby and we called it pit swing. Great times
great vid Ashton
Thanks man !
Great video Ashley. I would have thought the stone building with metal case on top was a water tower.
@@davidbutterworth9609 Thank you ! 😀 explains it now ! M
Nice little explore, the viaducts are great, nice day for a walk too.
@@Tuberuser187 absolutely ! Can’t wait to do that prequels to this aswell !
What a lovely old train line , amazing history and engineering 👳🏿👳👳🏿 . I should take a walk along when springtime arrives . It looks like nature will thrive there .
Ashton this became a route on Train Sim World 3 last year Peak Forest route.
It's good those old mills are being used for something. Very interesting.
You should see the old lane mill that’s about 500 meters away. You go from dean clough with all its rejuvenation to seeing what it could have ended up as if it had been abandoned
I was living in Wyke when the end was bricked for a second time (I think) previously it was just left open at the far end and I think over the years some of the masonry had fallen off as it was evidently at the bottom. (assuming this wasn't left over from the demolition). I remember the huge black sleepers and barbed wire that blocked off the viaduct with the red and white "Trespassers Will Be Prosecuted" sign on it.
Enjoyed that mate. Im the lad you met outside the boxing gym, who was inspecting the old culvert. Im guessing where we were stood, where my van was parked, was the old track bed of this line? Either way i enjoyed it. I have recently done an inspection of the culverted river that runs beneath the North Bridge and Sainsbury's. Shame i hadnt met you before, you could have come and had a look at that one.
@@chrisanderson29192 nice to meet you man ! I remember ! That would have been brilliant !! Thanks for watching
Top video that buddy... Great mixing old and new.... gives you alot more understanding of the area.. well done Sir !! Keep the content coming
@@john-pu5uy thank you ! Part 2 is currently in the making 😃 glad you enjoyed it
there is another fully filled in tunnel on the line the Royal Geroge tunnel where layby is near the pub of the same name Royal Geroge
@@MichaelTinker-dt1rp Thank you ! Yes I’ve coverd this in part 2 ! I’ve done the whole line to stalybridge ! Check out the playlist called the the micklehurst loop line on my channel 😀
Another great video mate and some goood relics still lurking ,your picture fades are getting better by each video crack on
Great content as always . Walked this line yesterday from the meadowhall end with a view of completing it all . There is an old steelworks with a very distinctive footbridge still there about a mile up from meadowhall. Any history on this would be greatly appreciated . Again , keep up the good work !
Thank you ! Yes when we get there we will certainly document that ! 😃 Will research 😃!
The north end of lee bank tunnel is still there, it is fully bricked up. I visited it a few years back you can get to it from old lane by going down next to the rail bridge, it is very hard to get to due to the foliage and trees but when the porthole suddenly appears through the trees is worth the struggle getting to it
@@rickkey5463 thanks man ! I’ve been in Lee Bank about 4 or 5 times myself to show other explorers I’ve done a separate video on it if you search on the channel However guan reboot it in the next episode of this series ! 😃
Well done Ashton.🙂👍
