I'd only do that with a cheap steel shaft. Wouldn't subject my expensive shafts to that kind of torque
Can use an iron also
I would not use my driver to do such a thing, attaching a heavy towel like that swinging so much will put too much pressure and force on the shaft that was not meant to have and snap it
I haven’t had it happen yet. Most people don’t apply that much force anyway. And if you don’t like it.. use a broomstick or something that you feel won’t break. It’s simple loading mechanics.
@@coltonkalkanisgolf If you do it every day..... at some point sooner than later it will snap. Don't use your main driver LMAO
Don’t believe a towel would affect your driver shaft
@@dougdean8996 Try it then. Use your most expensive driver. Swing it at FULL SPEED 100 times every day with a towel wrapped around it. See what happens
@ I’m 69 so that number of aggressive swings might not sit well with meLOL
If you stay in shape, you don’t ever have to get into shape
Hey preach brother. But 99% of people don’t lol.
These sound great and simple. Ive tried speed training in the past and swing outta my shoes brought in bad habits. ie. early extension, very armsie act. What can I/we do to make sure we aunt developing bad habits?
To be honest when gaining speed you have to let go of ‘mechanics’ and creating ‘bad habits’ they need to be considered at separate sessions. Just making sure your mechanics don’t get out of wack to much. Consult with your coach to ensure your on the right path.
You're advocating 400 all out swings per week?! That's insanity and recipe for injury
was 2 sets of 50 twice a week .. not sure your math is mathing
@@jacktaylor9782 Ah yes you're right, but still 200 swings is a lot on the body. Most speed protocols are around 20-30 swings a workout for a reason. No wonder too many guys are coming up to him having tweaked something
Guys are coming to me tweaked something PRIOR to working with me. Also the speed stick is a lot more wear and tear on the body. 20-30 swings ain’t enough. And by getting in shape and being strong enough FIRST which is what I promote 200 is enough and no one is hurt with this method.
Do you recommend using a speed radar during each of the sessions?
Yes 100%
Your not Bryson
Wow neither are you. Good on ya.
So to summarise, the average is the minimum? 🤔
If you look at it that way. But we wana carry it minimum that far.
If you look at it that way. But we wana carry it minimum that far.
@@coltonkalkanisgolf Strokes gained model says 10 yards is worth roughly 0.5 shots per round, if skill remains equal in all other elements. Take a tour pro averaging 285 carry with effective handicap of say, +7. At equivalent skill level, someone hitting it 250 would be about a +5 handicap.
Not sure where to start. 59, plenty fit, in gym 4/5 days per week for years and keep up with most 20 somethings. Play to a 3 hdc, and know that more distance is key for me. Not short, +250 ave but tough to score on longer courses constantly hitting 3, 4, 5 and 6 irons to greens. Tried speed training last off season but each time I worked for wk or two, had to spend another week or two to stop tipping the club head over the top. Had a coach that has since relocated. I will definitely work at it again this off season but hope to have more success this year. Any suggestions?
Yes I designed a program specifically for instances like you. Message me on Instagram. But the start for you is to have an offf season dedicated to gaining 10-15 mph minimum. Then hone in mechanics.
I use the stack system. I went from 102mph to 111mph. At the end of each session I hit 10-20 balls with my driver into my sim. Kinda trying to use the speed AND hit balls at the same time. I speed train Monday, fitness/workout Tuesday and take Wednesday off. Thursday speed, Friday fitness and weekend off.
Here in Australia we don't have an off season as we can play year round, especially here on the Sunshine Coast in QLD😀
That’s sick! Still take a few months to really hone in what I chatted about.

What do you wana see next ?
@@coltonkalkanisgolfgood question. Do a series where you play a full round with guests with different handicap levels and talk them through course management to caddy them, seeing if your course management strategy helps them go low.
Been working on playing the cut off the tee myself. These are almost the exact adjustments I made as well. Solid lesson on fundamentals.
Dude absolutely keep grinding. What you wana see next. ?
@ I’d like to see advanced shot making content. A lot of channels cater to newer players, which is great! But not much help for a player like me who’s a single digit trying to get to scratch.
Great lesson bud, keep these videos coming out like your channel
Thanks brother will do!
What do you want me to cover next?
@ for me I would like to see something from 100 yards and in or on the side of fundamentals as such as transition in the downswing weight pressure etc, but anything you put out will help I am sure , I am a 14 handicap trying to get down to single numbers
@@coltonkalkanisgolfI would suggest a “series” of videos around a theme.
I disagree
That’s fine tell tiger don’t tell me lol
Putter is the most important 😉just simple maths really
Nice video… what swing speed should we target to achieve this?
Carry? 105mph + with a Center punch. 🤜
Awesome, thanks
You say hit 260....referring to carry or total distance?
carry!
Liked the video! Buttt... Whats with the glasses? lol thanks guys
Glasses are a vibe bro
I don't know what the percentage of golfers is, who can carry a drive 260 yards + but I suspect that it's in the very low single figures.
So is the percentage of scratch golfers. Driving distance is the most correlated stat to handicap other than the amount of greens hit in regulation which is also strongly influenced by driving distance.
@@drakemiller7136 So this is relevant to a very small number.
It’s actually a bigger number than you think. Only about 4% drive over 300. 11% over 260.
Preach
@@coltonkalkanisgolf Any source for that data?
It’s actually no secret that the game favors longer tee shots. You can see how the professional game has evolved
Bang nailed it.
I know you guys are doing a get to scratch series but I want to how to go from a high single digit (7-9) to a low single digit (1-4)
Id like that as well. Not everyone is hitting 2 irons from bunkers 260 yards.
Facts. Focus on the burry to entry. Distance. Once you carry it 260. Then focus on ball striking and 1 shot shape. Then short game. You should get to lower single digit with driving and ball striking.
Great advice. Thank you!
Great insight on these wedges! Thanks for showing the fitting process 🏌♂️ How's the black finish holding up on these? I'd be keen to watch an on course review!
Yes they are awesome. They held all year. Very impressed.
Thanks for that feedback! They are on sale at the moment here in New Zealand and the black ones are available. 🎉
Be careful with that. Terrible for your kidneys
the idea of a 20hcp (or just finding somebody who averages 230 or less) playing off a longer drive to compare score is a great idea
it will be done.. i did it with a client of mine last week.. he was blown away.. .75-1 shot better on every hole
I have debated this with a friend of mine who consistently hits 300+y off the tee. It's easy to say that isn't necessary and kind of boring to basically tee off and have a partial wedge in on most holes. Especially when 250-75y (where I tend to hit) still makes most holes fairly short on approach. But if we're talking scoring, the extra bump in distance puts a wedge in his hands vs my 7i and stats don't lie - that wedge in is going to hunt pins more than my 7i. I don't think everybody needs 300y or more, but if somebody's hitting under 250y and having a long iron/fairway or something into a lot of greens that is going to be really hard to score nearly as well as an 8i in hand. Obviously control is important too - it's better to find fairways at 250 than woods at 290 - but all things considered longer tee shots help the overall score to a much bigger degree than most people think.
1000% and im not saying anything else needs to take a back seat but like you said... dispersion doesn't lie.. and hitting it longer allows you to be less accurate cause being closer to the hole means everything !
@@coltonkalkanisgolf I kind of hate playing golf from a 300y tee shot - rarely get to play iron shots which is my fav part of the game - but it IS easier to go low when you are usually inside 115y on every par 4. My personal distance is an average of 265. I'll poke one at/just over 300 once a round, and have a couple that don't quite get tagged and end up 239ish, but the vast majority are 250-80 and that's absolutely perfect for me (play from blue tees). The few times I'll blast one i get the reward of a tiny pitch in, but most of the time it's driver - 8i or something and that's so enjoyable.
Stop filming nothing!!!!!!! Can you just enjoy the fucking game?? Fucking dumb as fuck just like you douchenozzles
I weigh 140lbs soaking wet. We'll go with a generous 5'7". I can get about 250 on average. When the stars aligned I have rolled out to like 290 on some of my best ever did
well you gotta gain some weight brother.. and some speed ! gotta control what we can
It's almost impossible to play scratch golf on a championship golf course if you can't hit it 260 in the air. You can't even reach fairway at long events.
or most courses for that matter!!!
If ur hitting it 260 yards, maybe u can be scratch from the white tee boxes… no way you can be scratch from the tournament tees
i agree.. you would need way more in the tank
Are you talking about someone whose average score is level par, or someone with a scratch handicap? They are not the same thing
260+ is an indicator you have the CHS and golf skills for a solid strike most of the time. And since the driver is the hardest club in the bag to hit, that typically translates to solid strike in the irons for approach. But just because you’re 260+ doesn’t mean you’ll be scratch. What would be interesting to see is where players at 260+ off the tee who are 5 cap or worse lose the most strokes typically.
saying driver is the hardest club to hit isnt true.. less loft yes .. but its also the biggest..
@@coltonkalkanisgolf what’s harder than driver? least loft, at the end of the longest shaft, highest CHS, bulge and roll make need for precision higher than every club. Just because it’s bigger doesn’t mean you can miss the sweet spot by much and still expect a good shot. And mishits are punished more than with any other club. If you can control that club, it’s highly transferable to get on the sweet spot of your 8 iron.
Idk guys, I know old men who can’t hit it that far and shoot in the high 60s and low 70s constantly. I think that long game is more for your aspiring pro golfers imo! 🤷🏾♂️ Golf is won in the short game is what I was taught.
I’d love to see that honestly. And if they do they are playing the appropriate distance for them. And lastly there’s ALWAYS acception s to the rule. 😮
Short game is def still king but for success at goof courses with any sort of length you gotta be able to drive at least 260. I think that’s a fair statement.
@@dukane14 You’re most definitely right it is a fair statement but I have seen that with my own two eyes….most the guys on PGA level can drive that far but what separates them all is that short game 🤷🏾♂️
Yes, its possible to be scratch without hitting it far. But if your under 60 its a hell of a lot easier to speed train and get your clubhead speed up and hit it at least 275 than to improve so much at everything else to compensate. Also your wrong about PGA tour guys, short game has less impact on strokes gained and results than anything else. Statistically the biggest differentiator on tour is approach play.
@@drakemiller7136 👍🏾
According to PGA stats, the best putter on tour averages 27.67 putts and the 177th best on PGA tour averages 30.84. That's more than 3 shot difference.
Fast talking and thinking have to keep going back 😅
😂 oops.
Upright, like 79*, in armlock is my current go-to setup. Would love to try this with a LAB DF3.
That’s what I have. But the mezza. Not the df3. Will be experimenting this off-season.
What do you think of the ACCRA shaft in it?
Commenting for the algorithm. Hoping to see the channel grow. Keep it up.
Thanks brotha 🙌‼️
I can pump a 4i 225 yards, is that good?
I think that’s great. 🎉
i don’t see how this can possibly be true
Check stats.
@@coltonkalkanisgolf maybe for the pros but i feel like 3 putts for amatures are absolute killer and account for way more strokes than that . I agree driving off the tee is just as important
True…but the worst putters on tour have to be 10x better than average golfers. 😂
Rules still apply.
@@coltonkalkanisgolfI guess it would be relative. I’ve definitely taken 6 strokes with penalties to get on the green to then 1, 2, or 3 putt.
Canadian spotted “aboot”
Wait isn't that just milk and soda? 😭
Protein. Idk about ‘milk’
I gotta try this but i’d prlly die or sumn 😂
No you won’t lol
Nice video 😊
As someone who is a 27 handicap putting is far more important. Even if i could hit a drive 300 yds im still gonna score a bogey or double bogey. I could see how for the pros it becomes less and less important tho.
You statistically would be able to play ‘poorly’ and score better. So you are SOMEWHAT correct with this.
As someone who loses balls off the tee, i agree with this.
As you should! I know a guy ;)
At the tour level, where everyone is a much better than average putter, getting your tee ball 40-50 yards closer than the next guy has obvious advantages, especially when you consider tour average for approach shots from various distances. I think a lot of people that would advocate for putting being the more important skill are probably playing from the whites (mid tees) or even senior tees where a satisfactory drive is leaving them a short iron to the green. If they’re playing some of these long courses from the tips, they’d probably see the value of hitting a 325 yard drive vs 285. I’ll take an 8-iron into the green vs a 4 or 5-iron any day. That alone will probably save me more than a couple of putts or chip shots over a round. And if we’re talking dispersion, even at the amateur level from shorter tees, nothing crushes my scorecard faster than when I’m having a bad day with driver. I’ll take my worst day with putter long before I’ll consider taking my worst day with driver. I think the saying should be “drive for dough, putt to make sure you don’t lose that dough.” But I guess that’s not as catchy 😂
Putting hands down. Stats do lie. If driving is so great how come those long drive guys aren’t on tour?
Singular skill vs multiple skills. Not to mention, their accuracy requirements aren’t nearly as stringent as you’d see on a regular golf tour. Having closer approach shots betters your proximity to the hole on average, giving yourself better chances to hole putts and avoid missing greens. Granted, I think the discussion here is based on tour level or good amateur level play. At those levels, it’s not like we’re talking someone who is completely inept at one or the other. However, the driving distance from the #1 guy on the PGA vs the guy who is 170th in distance is 42 yards on average. While that #1 guy is hitting a 9-iron into the green, that 170th guy is probably hitting a 4-iron.
I can’t believe you just said STATS LIE 🤣
Case in point. So the #1 isn’t losing their card. While it’s tough to hit a green with a 4 iron.
@@coltonkalkanisgolf well I don’t use arcos. Do you?
220
I think it's a lot easier to be fine at putting than fine at driving. Even a mediocre putter will get the ball in the hole in 3-4 putts, while a mediocre driver of the ball will be constantly losing balls and getting in thick rough that they're probably not good enough to competently get out of. That's how I see it. Get your putting to an acceptable level, and that's something you can ride for a decent chunk of your golf progression, where you should focus on the rest of your game
You can choose to "see" it however you want.. but you cant argue with facts unfortunately.
If the point of golf is to play as little golf as possible, and putting puts an end to the shots played. Then putting matters more than driving.
Stats don’t lie. You’re missing the entire point.
@@coltonkalkanisgolf Then why’d you ❤️ my comment? 😎
