Universal ABC Battery Eliminator Model 2.5A-B80-C2 Review
For 1920's Radio Enthusiasts, having the ability to power those radios without having to use batteries is an important consideration. I thought it appropriate to do a review on this newly acquired Eliminator. After running it through it's paces, you will hear my thoughts on it, and hopefully have enough information to make a decision about whether it's the right fit for you.
NOTE: Antique Radio Archeology does is not affiliated with this company or product. This is just my honest opinion on what I have experienced while using this product.

1923 Chelsea Made Lloyd C Greene Concert Receiver Restoration
Просмотров 397День назад
Lloyd C. Greene's 1922 article went viral at the time, spawning a multitude of DIY radio people to order parts and kits to produce this incredible Regenerative Receiver. Since the Regen Patent's prevented Mr. Greene from selling a completed set, it didn't stop Chelsea Radio Company from capitalizing on their license. So in 1923 the Lloyd C. Greene Concert Receiver entered the retail world with ...
1924 Western Electric 540 A-W Speaker Restoration

In 1924 Western Electric introduced the "Hornless" 540 A-W loudspeaker. It was innovative and opened the door to a new radio experience. Many of these speakers today are lacking their cones and suppliers are scarce. Most are in bad to fair condition. We are going to restore the pedestal and base, and using a cone supplied by Buford Chidester, co-author of the book "Classic Cones" we will bring ...
Restore a 1920's Sun damaged Hard Rubber Radio Faceplate
Просмотров 235Месяц назад
Those brown hard rubber faceplates are NOT supposed to be brown! That's not "patina" that's UV light damage and removing it is not just a matter of a good cleaning. In this video I'll show you how I address the issue. There are other ways as well, like staining or painting them, but this is how I do it. It should also be said that you should keep your hard rubber faceplates out of direct sunlig...
1920s Faceplate and Dial Letter Restoration Process
Просмотров 355Месяц назад
I'm often asked how I clean up those faceplates and dials. While I typically include a segment showing the process in most of my videos, I decided to dedicate a video to just that process. So now, if asked, I can refer people to an entire video on it which gets into a little more detail. The lacquer stick I refer to is available on places like Amazon and E-Bay. You can also use a white letterin...
1923 Chelsea Model 113 Amplifier Reconstruction

This is a 1923 Chelsea Model 113 Amplifier. This amp is typically paired with the Model 112 tuner and was most likely a limited run prototype. This restoration is almost a complete build from scratch. With only 1 advertisement to go on, with a faceplate and cabinet, we had to reconstruct this radio using diagrams from the Model 107 radio which replaced this tuner/amplifier pair. Using a myriad ...
Three Different Slider-Coil Crystal Radio Restorations

If you ever try to buy a replacement Cat Whisker for a crystal radio, you will find they can be quite expensive. It's super easy to make your own, so in this video we will show you how. it's important to use spring steel as it's designed to be made into a spring. Also be aware it's hardened steel and as such, it should be handled with care. It can break, and it's sharp as a needle when handling...
1926 Gimbel Brothers Magnet ZR-66 Repair and Restoration

In 1926 Gimbel Brothers Department Stores offered a unique ornate TRF radio that was limited to 1000 units. It was believed to be produced by Chelsea Radio Company in Chelsea Massachusetts by a number of Radio Collectors mainly because the ZR-60 was produced by Chelsea, and likely the ZR-70. It may not be a Chelsea Radio product as we once believed. We will delve into that history, and then tak...
Chelsea Super-Five Radio Series - Part 5 - 1927 Console Version Restoration

The Chelsea Radio Company 1927 Console Version of the Super-Five was a metal chassis, metal face plate Super-Five that would have been used in a console that, in most cases, had a speaker and possibly a power supply. Isn't it true, though, that after similar "restoration" treatments in subsequent years, no faceplate will remain? How many of these treatments will the faceplate endure? You're removing original physical material from the object and changing its dimensions. Is this treatment "museum correct"? Probably not. Just my opinion.

My experience tells me to never use water based cleaning on old hard rubber... Use plain mineral spirits. Use #0000 steel wool. If really bad, start with 400 grit sandpaper. Finish with 1500 grit buffing pad...

    • @antiqueradioarcheology-wil8878
      @antiqueradioarcheology-wil8878 Месяц назад

@@RadioHist I've used that method as well. This needed much more aggressive treatment which involved hours of work. I have a hard rubber faceplate I did like this over a decade ago and it still looks like the day I did it. On plates with less UV damage I agree 100 percent with you and will definitely work with mineral spirits.

Thanks for doing this Greene radio. Info about him is much appreciated. His son (jr) from Chelmsford had an ad years ago asking if anyone had one of his radios. I didn't contact him then and have regretted not doing so ever since. This was probably at least forty years ago. I have gotten a couple of sets since that time. There was a connection with Chelsea and a Worcester department store - Culver-Stearns and it says on the panel that it was manufactured by them. I wonder what the business arrangement was. The other set I have is much more elaborate ie The 1924 Concert Selector. Merrill Bancroft, Townsend, MA

This was a labor of love to say the least. I found the research fascinating, and I really wish I could find his son, though he probably isn't alive. I'm sure he has grandchildren that are, but even finding one interested in radios is a challenge. I did gift a Chelsea Super-Five to the granddaughter of the founder of the Chelsea Radio Company, and I'm working on a set right now that is going to his Great Granddaughter who has taken an interest in that part of her family history as well. It helps that her husband is a HAM operator and experiencing the joy the radio I gifted her mother has brought that family. I will someday delve into the Concert Selector, which also fascinates me. But my biggest dream is to find the Chelsea produced version of this radio to help get the Chelsea Line of radios in my collection closer to completion. I actually have a second Lloyd C. Greene receiver along with the Amplifier. Maybe someone will come along willing to offer a trade.

I'd like to know what you recommend for the best gauge of the wire. Also you don't mention the crystal material. Do you have a source for the wire and crystal. This is interesting to me. I have built a crystal radio over 40 years ago and it used a commercial diode. it would be great to replace the diode with a detector I actually made. I'm a ham and 75. The crystal is Galena, the wire gauge was 36 which is too thin. It works well, but it's not easy to handle. It's like working with stronger strands of fiberglass, it penetrates the skin real easy. I prefer about 28 gauge.
