Stena Line from Rosslare to Cherbourg: Huge Growth since Brexit
Note: I took this ferry in 2024 and the Vision was removed from this route in October 2024.
In today's ferry review, I'm taking Stena Line from Rosslare in Ireland to Cherbourg in France as a solo passenger with one car, staying in a four berth cabin with a window).
This complete ferry review looks at everything from check-in, Rosslare Terminal, boarding (embarkation), a full cabin tour, a look at the decks (inside and out) and assesses the quality of the Stena Vision in comparison with its big competitor to Cherbourg, Irish Ferries.

I experienced this carry on tirade on my last flight from Miami. The agents pushed and pushed passengers to check their carry ons. The result? A lot of empty overspend on the flight. I can travel for two weeks with standard carry on luggage without needing to do a laundry. I also appreciate getting out of an airport so much faster.

The journey is slow because the tracks are not straight in some places. The track goes around the side of mountains rather than through them via a tunnel. It's the same story going north from Sydney to Taree etc. You need straight tracks for fast speeds. As the train nears Sydney, it needs to avoid suburban Sydney trains . So, it will be kept waiting to avoid suburban trains. All signals are controlled from Sydney. Sydney controllers don't care if the Canberra train is running late into Sydney.

I have seen the air staff take up 3 bins. This means a paying customer automatically does not have space above their seat. Why can’t Air Canada, WestJet etc provide a closet at the front or back of the plane to store staff cabin baggage. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve boarded early only to find bins already full. Why paying customers treated so badly is beyond me.

Hullo’s Nanaimo terminal is difficult to find-the signage is all private (DoT) and hard to see amongst at the other crap on the Nanaimo waterfront. But the worst is even mildly disabled people won’t like such a long walk, especially in the cold (which would cinch it for me-I couldn’t safely do it and so wouldn’t consider using Hullo).

@PlanetPatrick you mentioned at the beginning that the only ferry to Nanaimo was from Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay, but there's also Tsawassen to Duke Point. I'm not sure if translink goes to Horseshoe Bay, or if its a greyhound type situation as I've never made the trip, but the other option is to catch the Canada Line down to Bridgeport station and then transfer to a bus to Tsawassen (the express bus takes considerably shorter to get there). I have no idea if this is faster or easier for a pedestrian, but it does give the other option over Horseshoe Bay since bridge traffic and West Bound traffic on Highway 1can be egregious depending on the time of day.

This ferry is only 20 mins faster than BC Ferries though of course it goes to down town Vancouver which is an advantage for a lot of people. I really don't see the point of having different classes on a journey of such short duration. It makes no sense to me and I can't imagine that would be a deal breaker if someone wanted to get to down town Vancouver. "Oh, I can't get business class on that ferry, so I won't use it". I agree that on such a short journey there doesn't need to be restaurants or shops of any kind so that is sensible. A snack station is perfectly adequate for the journey, though BC Ferries seems to think they have to provide alcohol as well. It's not a cruise ship and I think when it's a car ferry, it should be alcohol free. I think the big disadvantage the Hullo ferry has is the distance to walk to the ferry from the terminal building and the fact that the weather is unpredictable in the winter. Someone who isn't able to walk very far or who has trouble walking is going to find it hard going on a wet windy and cold winter's day. It's so exposed there, it would be horrendous I should think. That's also the advantage of the BC ferry for foot passengers being under cover. That would be enough for me personally, not to use it as I have mobility issues.

    • @PlanetPatrick
      @PlanetPatrick 6 дней назад

I have heard from a couple of viewers who have mobility issues and would agree with you that the walk from the terminal is just too much. I've not paid for the "premium" option and I'm not sure there's enough difference between classes to warrant the upgrade. I've reviewed quite a few ferries at this point and only Stena's onboard lounge is worth the upgrade (it has a full buffet, coffee station and soft drinks). For 1h15m, I'd agree it's not worth it on Hullo!

Air Canada used to be ABYSMAL and sometimes I flew connecting through the states to avoid them. About 10 years ago, I had to go back to the UK and the best rate (Christmas time) was Air Canada by FAR so I thought "well, the flight is only so long, I'll tough it out." (I don't need leg room. A bit more ass room would be nice but I don't have the leg problem). My flight from Edmonton had been delayed but I had a connecting flight in Toronto and they worked so fast and so hard to get me on a flight that was leaving in about 45 minutes. They even portered me in a wheelchair so I could get to the gate faster. When I got to my final destination (Glasgow), I was very impressed. I had an equally good experience the following year. So I said "If I get one more flight through Air Canada without hitches, I will be forced to say good things about them." And I have really had no problems with them since.

I took the Hullo ferry to Vancouver for a Canucks game. I had to park so far away that I got a cab to the terminal. Meanwhile there was a giant parking lot adjacent to the terminal that was fenced off and completely empty. It’s a very long walk to the boat after leaving the terminal. For someone like me who has difficulty walking distances, it’s daunting. The trip is fine and it’s nice to be able to return to the island the same night after the game.

I am grateful to live in a hub city. Though there are negative comments about US-based airlines online, they are my first choice for traveling just to avoid Scare Canada (my name for the airline in your video). I have taken hundreds of flights using Delta, United and American and even some of my worst experiences with them were better than our two biggest carriers here in Canada; the second being Westjet. When I do have to fly East here here in Canada, the only other option is Porter and I will take that even if it means no direct route or the hour that I want just to avoid our other two carriers. Discount carriers--because this video is about not about those, I will keep those thoughts quiet on this post:)

Thanks for the video Patrick. Ever since I first flew AC in 1970 it's been a bland and/or workmanlike airline. Nothing really stands out. Perhaps AC's ad campaign of the 1990s "Flights so good you won't want to get off" is memorable ! Its 777-300ERs, when configured two-class, used to accommodate around 450 pax. However when AC added PE the seat count was slightly reduced. Nevertheless when flying within N America it's generally accepted that AC (on N American domestic routes) is a cut above its US rivals.

Snow! We are about to maybe have our first snow fall in nanaimo this year of 2025 and no snowfall of 2024 into 2025. Damp humid weather is to be expected. Damp not dry.

Thanks Patrick, although I haven't flown with AC for a good while, I've not seen a great review of the airline. The word Bland comes to mind. I hope they see this review. They can do better

I think they can too, there’s many fantastic Canadian companies in transport and I feel sure the distance to cover to make AC good is possible.

Thanks for sharing this! My wife and I and friends on Vancouver Island occasionally take a cruise out of the Canada Place cruise terminal. The Hullo Ferry would be very convenient if they allow the extra bags of luggage we always have when taking a trip. I'll be checking into this.

They do charge extra for bags beyond the basic allowance. It might still work for you cost-wise, but worth checking!

Not only SQ. Very many airlines offer better onboard products than AC.

I love the Hullo. The scenery is spectacular and it is downtown to downtown. Having gotten rid of my vehicle, it is so nice not to pay those fees, including gas.

That's insightful! I'd love to do the same thing (no vehicle).

The biggest problem with Hullo Ferries is that you can't contact them. No phone service, no online chat. You can send them an email and they will respond within 3 days. So if you're having trouble with the website, or want to inquire about sailing within the next 3 days, you're out of luck. It's very poor service and I have no idea why they can't at least staff a phone line.

I had no idea about that - thank you for sharing your experience and this issue.

I can't believe they have 3 "classes" of passengers for a 1:15 trip. "snack"? "Charging station"? "Wifi"? Sounds a bit presumptuous. I guess they have to justify the high cost. As a Senior, I get to walk on to BC ferry FOR FREE, with my bicycle, Tues - Thurs. I suspect Hullo doesn't have that.

That’s great with BC. I understand there’s a senior discount but not for free!

I love leaving Nanaimo on the Hullo, sadly I have to return to Nanaimo all too often.

For a visitor like me, I like to travel to the island, but I get your point.

If you become an Evo Car Share member, there are always findable Toyota Hybrid vehicles around downtown for short trips within the home zone (it’s slowly expanding outside of Vancouver, and there is Evo Return in Nanaimo, now). They’re a very handy tool for getting around relatively cheaply, running errands, etc.
