    Loved the tiny cats, Joy! The Farm & Fiber Knits magazine sounds very interesting. I hadn’t heard about it before. It’s exciting to see the designers who are participating - especially Alice Starmore! Her daughter Jade also designs knitwear but the garments tend to be theatrical costumes rather than wearable every day items. The article from Meg Swansen sounds familiar to me. Didn’t she write on that topic in Interweave or Vogue Knitting? Btw, I have the book Twisted-Stitch Knitting by Maria Erlbacher if you ever want to borrow it. The patterns are quite beautiful. Finally, I’m so happy that everyone seemed to enjoy our Knitting to Flatter class! It was a wonderful day!

    • @QuailsKnittingNest
      @QuailsKnittingNest 2 месяца назад

      Oh yes, the knits from Alice Starmore in this issue are quite theatrical! But there are some wearable mitts, scarves & hats. I don't remember if Meg wrote another article about the Twisted Knitting, but I had the book for awhile and then got rid of it because I decided I would never use it.

    Hi again! I'm watching as I knit on the first piece (the back) of a cotton summer tee top (Vincas from Berroco, with Estelle Young Touch Cotton DK -- discontinued -- deep stash!). I love your wee kitties (I have 3 cats -- 1 elder and two that are siblings, 1 year old) but haven't the patience to do the fiddly knitted kitties you've done,, Joy! As for the chicken -- I'm happy to admire from afar. NOT happening here! LOL! Again, the "fiddly factor" that I associate with ALL knitted toys has kicked in. Knitting is in itself my emotional support! RE: the 10-stitch hat. Hmmmm....I'm inclined to trust your review before I take the plunge and add it to my repertoire (mostly made from stash for charity). It seems to me there are other, better options for hats that I want to knit to give away! I was interested in your comments about Fiber Knits "magazine" as I have received information urging me to sign up. I'm Canadian so must consider that the cost in CAD is 30% higher. A $65 USD publication (or offering) would cost me $100 CAD -- and to receive only one REAL copy of it...and have the rest "dribbled out" (my perception) by e-mail?! Not happening at my end. Happy July 4 to you. Canada Day is July 1...so this is a very special week!

      @QuailsKnittingNest 2 месяца назад

      Hi Margaret. That Vincas top is a really cute design! I'm sure you will enjoy it. I don't normally go for fiddly things, but the mini cats grabbed me, lol, and they actually were not too fiddly to make. Have fun on Canada Day. :)

      Not sure exactly what you are asking. You can use the short row for the toe (I have another video demonstrating this). I would not use this short row combined with a gusset for the heel, as this short row method completes the heel turning with no gusset needed.

    I’m behind on watching your last 2 episodes! I wanted to comment on your double knitting issue with rowing out, Joy. I’ve had the same issue. It’s worse if using cotton yarn, of course. Better if I reduce needle size. Interestingly, I saw a friend yesterday who was working on her 1st double knit hat from a class she had just taken. It looked perfect. When I commented on how nice the stitches appeared, she said the instructor said to go back and tighten up the purl stitches after working 3 or 4 of them. I imagine that this could be very slow and tedious, but might be worth exploring? Let me know if you try it!

    • @QuailsKnittingNest
      @QuailsKnittingNest 2 месяца назад

      Interesting that you had the same issue. And Jackie told me she had problems with it, too. The interesting thing to me is that a few years ago when I did some more double knitting, it did not plague me at all. That fix of manually tightening up the stitches does sound tedious; I'm not likely to try it, but thanks for the suggestion!

    I think you found this bind off from me, Joy. I used it in a recent project which you commented on. I had never heard of it before either. The one thing that I found which made it a bit easier on my wrists was to use a short dpn for the right needle. It made me feel like I had less distance (and no cable!) to twist around. See if it makes a difference for you!

    LOL! So you've fallen for that chicken too, eh? I confess that a) I don't like finicky projects -- including toys -- and I don't enjoy making short rows -- so I'm just being entertained by all the chicken-makers out there, happy to watch from the sidelines. As for a summer top -- I made one last year, and had great intentions (patterns and stash yarns at the ready) but...my daughter approved the "Presto Vesto" from Amy Gunderson for Xmas 2024/Birthday -- January 2025 -- and it's *quite* the knit. That's my focus -- along with some socks and cross stitch and gardening -- for this year. It's still chilly here -- in the fifties and low sixties Fahrenheit (rough translation from 10 -14 Celsius) so I'm still enjoying wool socks and sweaters!

      Yes, this can be worked on a toe-up sock. In fact in the tutorial that is exactly what I am working on. For my husband, I start the heel at 9 inches from the toe tip (he wears a US men's size 12 shoe). It would depend on the length of your foot where you would start the heel. For myself I might start at 7 1/2 - 8 inches (I wear a US size 8 1/2 shoe).

      I am so amazed that your mission falls yarn and mohair go together so beautifully! I would not have tried to pair them. The nylon in the mohair yarn adds strength, but nylon is very soft, also. And, Joy, I think your purples are working up great! So clever to combine them, but also a lot of work to keep track of the repeats. I am swatching 2 linen and linen, rayon cotton yarns for summer tee shirts.

    So fun to see all of your new acquisitions, ladies! You got some real lovelies there. And the pictures from your lunch at Caleb’s made me so hungry that I immediately booked a reservation for tomorrow night for dinner. Thanks for reminding me about them. I haven’t been there in years!

    I saw Carlos knitting the first stitch when he was on the rows when knitting the 2 stitches together. You don’t knit the first stitch. Is there a difference in how it turns out your or his way?

      The difference is so subtle you probably wouldn't notice.

    Your counterpoint shawl is beautiful Janet, and your herringbone scarf, Joy! Love the colors. Those urth yarns! Also like the European sock yarns, they wear better. Great that you go as a group to the crawl! Those are so fun, better together.

    What a lovely segment -- and such fun you had on your Yarn Crawl day out! I too love the sturdier sock yarns (Opal, ONline Supersocke, Lana Grossa and the like). That Uneek Urth you got, Janet -- 100% Extra-fine Merino (the highest grade merino, I think) -- is there a shawl in your future? I've been sitting on a skein of that for a while...Thanks for the tour; it was delicious -- and just a teaser to get me ready for our own Rose City Fibre Festival in Camrose (Alberta) next weekend!

    I am jealous of all of the wonderful sock yarn you picked up on your last shopping trip. I have recently purchased West Yorkshire Spinners 4-ply and I've fallen in love with. Hopefully it feels as good on my feet as it does on my hands. Thank you for another wonderful episode!

    Love the way this looks but I remember doing this stitch many years ago in the round and hating it! If I made a mistake I couldn’t drop down to fix it and found that really frustrating. Your scarf is beautiful, though! Maybe you don’t make mistakes 😂. Or maybe it had something to do with it being in the round.

      I did make a few mistakes. I tinked back to fix them; did not even try to drop and ladder up.

    If i wanted to make it wider, say 9 inches, would i cast on an even amount or does it need to be in multiples of a certain # ? I found the pattern and downloaded it, and it calls for 30. Just not sure how many to add 🤔

    • @QuailsKnittingNest
      @QuailsKnittingNest 5 месяцев назад

      Yes, any even number of stitches. The pattern is a multiple of two.
