I’ve just had another thought (or question or suggestion). It’s a matter of personal taste, but I think next time I might try making this in two pieces (starting each piece at the bottom) and join together in the middle. That way, the motifs are facing upwards on both sides not downwards on one end 🤔
Your scarf is so beautiful with this stitch! Thank you for the tutorial. Several years ago I made a blanket from a pattern that had this stitch, but i could find no example, or how to do it, and i ended up using a crochet hook and it was very awkward. This looks a bit fiddly on the wrong side, but I'd like to try it!
Thanks. I'm interested that you have worked this stitch before. I can't say that I had ever seen it used before. Recently I saw someone else using it for an assigned pooling project and decided to try it for myself. I'm so happy with how it turned out.
What happens if you come across your color change on the “backside” of the scarf? Do you do the dip stitch the same way, do hey look the same on the front and back of the work?
On the backside you work it in reverse, ie purl the dips instead of knitting them. I hope that makes sense. They do not look the same front and back; there is definitely a Wrong Side.
Thank you @QuailsKnittingNest! Back to the question about when the flash of colour comes on the wrong side - you suggested doing the shell dip stitch by purling, but I’m interested to know how you managed to get yours all on the right side🤷🏻♀️. Also with my yarn, sometimes the colour section comes right on top of a shell already worked. I’m interested in why that didn’t happen to you. What I’ve ended up with is rows of garter stitches in the contrasting colour, which you’ve managed to avoid. It looks fine but I’m wondering how you manage to avoid doing any garter stitch in the contrast in colour. @@QuailsKnittingNest
www.youtube.com/@alexandra-pz6mv when working on the wrong side, when the color change happens, to work it purlwise: put the right needle in from back to front as many stitches down as you do on the RS, wrap the needle and pull the yarn through to the back (RS), lift and work the next stitch purlwise from the left needle. Repeat as needed. You will get some color on the WS, but the main design will be on the RS.
www.youtube.com/@alexandra-pz6mv As for the colors stacking up, that did happen to me in the beginning and occasionally throughout. I did two things to avoid this. First, I started the dip stitch either sooner or later than I would have, to avoid them overlapping; sometimes it appears like they ended up right next to each other. Second, I increased one stitch until I got to a number where the colors did not overlap too much.
@@QuailsKnittingNest Thank you so much for explaining this technique for the wrong side.. I've tried that now and it looks amazing! As good when it's done on the right side. Thank you!

That is a stunning project!!! Thanks so much for sharing.
You are welcome.😃
This was so interesting and looks like fun! Thank you for this very clear tutorial! Love your podcast - you both always have such amazing projects!
You're welcome. I'm glad it was clear.
Thanks for the detailed video!
You are welcome!
It looks as if you embroidered the star bursts on the gray yarn
It does! But so much easier than embroidery.
