We harvested some blackthorn for sticks once. Had to lose some silver as a thank you to the Sidhe for taking it.

That is a lovely piece... I've made over 100 sticks now, and my favourites have all been the least work. Sometimes You just find a perfect blank, and all it needs is "polish" :)

Best way I found to avoid cracks is put liquid C.A. glue on the cuts. Also after cutting I clean the stick with brush and water, removing lichens, moss and algae, even bugs sometimes … Doing that you may discover some places where the bark is rotten, you will see them because when you leave the stick to dry a moment, those places with stay humid and soft -> scrape them off and apply c.a. glue … or if there are some existing small cracks or holes, do the same …

Try some beeswax and terps to make a paste. 80/20 beeswax/terps. Melt it all into a jar. 👍

Nice crop of stick blanks there JP! I've been thinking about trying wax on the ends. I've been using an old spray can of lacquer to seal which works fairly well. Take care mate!

Great upload. 👍. It catches the newbies out. I learned the hard way many years ago even though my grandad told me to seal them…I’ve cut over 300 this season and they’re all sealed and stored. 👍

Is Drax Irish in the book? They don't really mention it in the TV series but he obviously is if he's using the word Shillelagh!

Liquid C.A. Glue is very efficient to prevent cracking in the drying process, much more effective that wax. It has a high degree of capillarity and will go inside tiny cracks or depressions and stop them !

Monk seems like very physically strong according to those punches

What knives do you use to whittle down.. use an epoxy resin on mine usually 2 coats..Nice stick though

When cut smear wood glue on the cut off sides this will prevent cracks ,it’s a bow making technique.

shed may get too warm in summer. i tried attic and sticks split to hot in summer.if u put them tea light candles in small old fry pan that seals ends real well. i cut mine minimum 6 inch to a foot over lenth i want also so if any cracks come they dont reach the wood u wana use.

Nice stick JP! I've had an Etsy shop for several years now and find it a handy way to sell my sticks. I'm not very computer savvy so it was a good fit for me. Part of the reason I started doing RUclips videos was to increase my Etsy business. (It hasn't) The downside is the fees they charge.

Turned out great JP! Your recent videos on shillelaghs have inspired me to finally try one. I have a bit of oak that's been drying for a few years now. Coming along nicely. Definitely looks like winter has arrived. We're supposed to be getting 4-5 inches of snow tomorrow🤬 Time to get the shovel ready.

Are there any alternatives to synthetic varnish? Can i make a dip out of 60% turps 40% boiled linseed and leave it to soak for a good long while? Would that make the stick stronger and preserve its natural spring better than resorting to chemical sealants?
