Couple days days work and pretty hard to bend blackthorn over your knee but with a bit of patience it is manageable

I didn't know that you can just use a kettle as my grandsons age 6yr old and 10yr had a great time yesterday playing around my back garden an old walking stick the other had a brush shaft play fighting so I'm going to give it a try to make sticks for them my age 70yr I remember my grandfather Blue was born in Ireland and moved to Scotland always had his blackthorn walking stick with him

Yes steam is all you require, kettle pan of boiling water, takes a bit longer to heat up stick but works good enough, blackthorn is hardest to bend mind hazel real easy with steam from kettle 😁

I'm wondering how thick a stick could be before it is unable to be straightened by steam or hot air gun?

Suppose it would be down to personal preference depending on the individual’s ability?

The "boring" part that you cut out was the part that I was hoping to see. before and after doesn't do me a lot of good if I looked up your video in the hopes of learning how to do it but I appreciate the effort anyway.

Cheers Pretty hard to hold and cut while simultaneously filming, pretty sure most people knew how to use a handsaw so instead of struggling to film I just didn’t bother thanks though

Ahh I understand. Very fair. Question for you, would you attempt straightening on a stick that has already been finished in oil? I've made a rookie stick but it's got a curve that gets on my nerves. Or is this no longer possible after finishing?

@@KatoCoyoteCombatWorkshop maybe clean it off with a microfibre cloth with sum white spirits or a alcohol let try straighten it, that’s what I would attempt it mate

Liked and subscribed. Thanks for uploading; great to see these skills and crafts in practice. I collect Hazel sticks for my Dad who also makes them; with Antler on them. He uses a drain pipe and a wall paper steamer to straighten the sticks. Fascinating subject; all the best Mark. I’ve got a vid on my channel where I went out collecting Hazel for him. 👍

Thanks you much appreciated it! Always remember getting out with my dad collecting sticks, once I get the ability to use a steamer I will be investing in one! I’ll check your channel out 😁
