Grayling Fly Fishing Trip to the Lancashire Calder
A great day out fishing for grayling on the River Calder in Lancashire with a friend. The day was spent exploring the Ribble Trust day ticker beat of the River Calder where it joins the River Ribble. We'd not fished this beat before, so selected to fish down from its upper boundary to the junction with the Ribble. In the absence of rising fish, tight line nymphing proved to be the best approach and we caught several wonderful grayling.

What flyline do you use on that Vision rod please ?
I just use euro nymphing leader set-up (5m) which is attached to a standard airflow 3# floating line.
My grandfather lived in Burnley, he once worked for Frank Whittle when he was building early jet engines up there..... pretty sure he used to fish on the Calder. It used to get polluted from time to time in the old days, unfortunately. He liked dry fly fishing for Trout etc
It still holds some nice brown trout which are great to catch on small dry flies.
Lovely session! I had about 20 up to a pound and half in that same first spot on maggot and stick float last winter. I have been thinking about going back this winter with a nymphing set up so now I am inspired!
It's a good spot for nymphing, so you should catch a few grayling there. Tight lines
A fabulous river Ive never managed to cast a fly.( despite bidding hopefully for several years on the Wild Trout trust fundraiser.) Exciting to watch Here's to a rise to the dry in 2025..whereever..or the hope of it Simon Artley
Hopefully, my mate will invite me to fish there again during this years Mayfly season.
Hmm wonder if there might be salmon lies. Its just upstream of the once very productive Forge Pool below the Viaduct. Any thoughts on sea trout? Simon Artley
There are some good salmon lies there and should ok for sea trout
Hi, was this recent or before christmas?
It was before Christmas 🎣
@@hawker-overend5404 thanks... i fished the paas water, its a bit upstream from there. also fish the dee from time to time... great video!
@ thanks
Be careful on the squirmy on their I hooked a huge barbel on one on the Mitton beat, great place.
That would be good fun🎣
Wow! I actually didn't know there was barbel on the Mitton beat? I hooked into something big on a pellet once that I thought could have been a barbel but I never saw it.
@@johnmaskell5124 It's a good barbel river. A friend normally gets a few good ones each year.
Great session, lovely looking stream.
Yes - it’s a lovely place to fish🎣
@@hawker-overend5404 I have already been looking at the map 😅 I was going to fish today but my chosen river has risen a metre with snowmelt - so no 🎣

Nice fish , how big do they get to these days in the ribble,, i was in the Warrington stretch and had a few up to 2lb 5oz over a few seasons, they could be difficult to locate, ive herd of a 2lb 10 from the wood cutters stretch in early 2000nds, . Not fished further up much . Nice to see theres a few about lovely fish to catch.
Not sure, I haven’t fished the Ribble much over the last few years. I think there are probably a few to 3lbs on the Hodder

How do you find using a nymph rod as a fly rod? the first eye is further away - are there any other differences btw I fish borders mid wales lake vrnwy area severn river vyrnwy banw p.s just subbed
I find they are OK but you have to compensate for the extra softness in the rod. I've not fished those rivers yet but hope to have a trip there soon.
Never fished for Grayling but looks like it would be a lot of fun on light tackle
They are great sport.
@LetsGoFishin60 very good fun on light tackle, i use a #5 9ft rod for dries and wets and a 11ft #3 for nymphing.

Is the Grayling a course, or game fish ? I have eaten them in Sweden and wonder , in theory if they might be eaten here . Also can they be taken in winter , if they are big enough ?
Classed as a coarse fish as it's breeding season coincides with the coarse fish closed season, mid March to Mid June. They are increasingly fished for by fly fishermen during the autumn and winter. Not sure about eating them.
Although they are often caught during the trout season, they are the mainstay for fly fisherman during the closed trout season, (unless you are fishing for migratory game fish). I have never seen a rule on the many beats that I have fished, that suggests that you can kill and take them. Some fly only trout waters allow Grayling fishing using coarse fishing methods, outside of the trout season (now also available on some river Test beats) but again, no fish are to be killed and taken. So I would suggest that they are viewed and treated as a course species.
Classed as a corse fish wrt to fishing season. Some clubs allow grayling to be taken but most anglers return their catch.
Have you heard of any barbel being caught in that part of dee....
@@gazzwells986 I know a few anglers who have caught them from BoD down river. But now the weir has been removed at Overton this summer they will probable move further upriver now.
Nice video, I've fished around Llangollen on the Dee for the past 20 years and find it a very fickle river, I've had blue ribbon days and also many blank days . On the blue ribbon days I feel I've been lucky and the blank ones I've felt I don't know what I'm doing. It's the challenge of not knowing which way the next day will go that makes me keep going back. P.S. also love the Dee up near Bala
Great to hear you enjoyed it. I find It's usually hard work when the weather comes from the east or there has been a sudden drop in temperature.
Hey Andrew, cheers for these videos. Is there a map that shows the different pools on the Dee? I normally fish around the golf course but don't know where any of these pools are.

One of the slippiest runs I’ve fished in on the river and yes I did go in for a dip. Great video once again
@@paulrowlands8666 Agree it's probably one of the hardest places to wade.
Hi Andrew, as I've said before I love your chanel. Question for you, hopefully I've got this right. Dry fly fishing: from the hook back, fullers earth say back to surgeons knot, then Red silicone all the way back to fly line including 4-5 yards of fly line. Wet fly fishing: on a floating line, fullers earth on tippet and all tapered leader. Thanks for all you do and keep them coming.👍
Correct
That is some fishing in that first pool. You hardly moved !
There were quite a few fish there. I Did move upriver and caught another 10 rainbow but ran out of battery power to film them.

Nice session Andrew and that is a lovely beat to fish. I have had plenty of dryfly action on the Berwyn beat, but now I have to put my rods away for a couple of months after a hip operation. Tightlines.
Great to hear you enjoyed the video and have been having some good dry fly fishing on the Dee. I hope your operation goes well and it doesn't keep you away from the river too long. Tight lines, Andrew
Lovely, I’ve never tried wet flies only dry or nymphs might be worth a go
Definitely worth a go especially to cover areas that you can’t get to when nymphing🎣
Sea trout arrived a little early? and they appear to have come upstream quickly .
Very interesting outcome adapting this method and in the daytime. Possibly worth a serious try at Chirk Argoed and Newbridge downstream of you...Havent been out since end of May....bit of colour in the water?
Well done
Thanks 🍻
Good video. Interested that you said that you were fishing for sea trout and then caught several. What made you think that you would catch sea trout instead of brown trout?
I'd caught a sea trout there while fishing for salmon earlier.
How do I communicate with you?

Been looking through your website and it's massively informative, so thank you for taking the time for putting it together. I am planning on taking my son up to Llangollen on Friday afternoon fly fishing for 1st, he is the fisherman, me not. Is there beat you would recommend, ideally from the bank or very shallow wading in wellies for him. He will be fishing for trout. Thanks
The upper beat has a few pools that can be fished from the bank, Dee Farm, The run above the glide pool, Pipe pool, Horseshoe Falls pool. hop this helps, Andrew
Beautiful trout, wet fly team fishing seems to be a forgotten art. Nice one!

Nice video. How many casts would you give a spot before moving to the next?
I normally cover the water in front of me with 3 or 4 cast then take a couple of steps upriver and repeat, until I’ve fished the whole pool. Hope this helps, Andrew
Enjoyable video Andrew - thank you. Couple of questions - were you fishing from the bank and roughly what size tungsten beads were you using?
I was fishing about 3ft from the bank on the rock ledge. You normally need a point fly with a 4mm tungsten bead to get down in the fast water there. Then you can fish small size 16 flies on the droppers with 1,5 or 2mm beads. I hope this helps, Andrew
Good video thank you. I’m watching on a mobile phone and apart from the last fish can’t see the takes. Are you watching the end of the fly line or do you feel the takes?
Hi Kerry, It is hard to see on the video but the tip of the fly line moves during the take but you also feel it. I hope this helps, Andrew
Fun bit is working out which of at least four River Derwents this is. Not that difficult, but for the wider audience I think it would be a courtesy to give some indication.

did you put squirmy on point ? also is it at all possible to show your spots on a map? hopeing to get on the top part of dee by forestry carpark next week, have you fished this and any suggestions would be great. cheers
It was in the middle dropper because I find it works better there.
Usually, I fish at Llandderfel, near Bals, when the river is running off. Best fished when the Bala gauge is below 0.5m. Also, the Corwen beats above where the Alwen joins should fish OK when the Bala gauge is below 0.5m.
Beat Map link which has the country park pools on it I fished in the video www.llangollen-maelor-angling.com/pdf/Maelor%20Angling%20Trevor%20section.pdf
What level was the river at? I am really keen to get out on the Dee again but it seems to be continually flooded. Thanks
Hi Mark, the level was 0.85m on the Manley Hall gauge. Currently, it's 1.1m and dropping slowly at Manley Hall, which is still a little too high. When it gets to <0.9m you can fish a few spots on the Country park and also Duncan's Pool from the right bank. If we don't get much rain it should be fishable in those places by Tue. More rain is forecast for Wednesday, so likely to rise again. I hope this helps, Andrew
Sorry I should have said from the left bank
Thanks Andrew, that is very helpful. I always look at the the Corwen gauge. I'll start looking at Manley going forward. I think I'll try and get out on Tuesday. Fisheries are fine but you can't beat a day on the river. I have been considering the tributaries of the Dee that the Corwen club control but I don't know enough about them really. @@hawker-overend5404
