    They are both not fully immersed in Japanese culture and speak and interact mostly in english as their friends circle is mostly non japanese. Sharla's japanese is very good but not as good as one would expect after 15 years in Japan. Her accent is still very strong.

    The other day I was just talking about what they were talking about at the end of this video, in terms of losing your personality when you speak your target language, which is exactly what i DON'T do. Aside from following different customs and learning polite set phrases and changing my approach a little, i always make sure to never ever "lose my personality" when speaking Japanese. Humor and wit are a huge proponent of my personality so i still make funny and silly jokes when speaking Japanese. Of course, however, you have to attain a certain level in the language you're learning to arrive at the point where you can start playing with the language and truly express who you are with it. I was saying how westerners that learn japanese tend to ditch their personality and go into this pseudo fake japanese way thats not even who they are. It's really important in my eyes to be able to express your thoughts and such no matter the mode of communication.

    A lot Japanese at Narcissistic . I’ll give piece of advice don’t be like typical Japanese don’t put yourself in a box . The Japanese education is a big impact very controlling secret communist Japanese education you don’t report the true crime status Bec Japanese just want to keep the image instead of correcting the wrong they rely hard to accept the truth that’s Japan

    I know this is 2 years old at this point but I'm pretty sure Chris won a competition for Japanese speaking when he was first in Japan.

    • @FireDarkNinja
      @FireDarkNinja Год назад

      @@LightningNavigator If you look up the pictures it doesn’t seem to suggest that this was the case, Chris has a weirdly massive amount of Japanese knowledge that he doesn’t use and likely is unconfident due to his lack of use. He does seem to know very specific words which usually wouldn’t be used such as when he’s talking about autumn leaves he uses a specific phrase that is something that even some Japanese people sometimes would forget to use or forget exists. There’s a few phrases like this such as tsuyu 梅雨 which means plum rain which is specifically referring to early summer rain, I guess it’s similar to complex vocabulary knowledge of English in a way. Either way I think he knows more than he puts on.

    • @thatsubarulife9817
      @thatsubarulife9817 Год назад

      I would say Chris has like a good N4 level of Japanese and definitely knows a few more difficult vocabulary that he has picked up from living in Japan for a long time but he is basic conversation at best. Sharla has fantastic Japanese (although she doesn't say much in this video).

    • @FireDarkNinja
      @FireDarkNinja Год назад

      @@thatsubarulife9817 Depends, he actually stopped studying so much in the past but N3 is probably where he finished at. You'd be surprised because you don't hear or see him talking Japanese much but he was very proficient so "basic at best" feels a bit demeaning. He did fail the N2 test but most definitely not N4, not that it matters to him as he thinks JPTL can become pretty circle jerky.

    Note #2: Japan is one of the oldest countries that exists today... Edward Deming from the US had a big effect on Japanese manufacturing - the Japanese "Deming Award" is named after him... (American companies ignored him) Item: check out the Japanese hippie poet Nanao Sakaki..."Memorandum", "Happy Lucky Idiot", "Break the Mirror"... he's good... >>> Hey... good candid review !

    Response to my opinion of Bill Wurz's "H of J"... good overview and and a starting place, but not the "whole story"... (That's an exercise left to the student...)... History text books are a difficult topic as you end up stepping on other people's toes... (i'm in the USA, and our political parties scream at each other on "how should American history should be taught"... (America still has an Ego problem ..."John Wayne nationalism", etc...) ....difficult thing... you need history that teaches the good, bad, and ugly if we're going to take democracy seriously, and learn from our mistakes... having a "Cosmic sense of humor" helps with serious stuff, and Bill Wurz plays with it...
